Cardinals send Tim Hightower to Redskins for Vonnie Holliday and a pick

Hightower_Tim

The Arizona Cardinals and Washington Redskins have completed a trade.

Arizona is sending running back Tim Hightower to Washington for defensive end Vonnie Holliday and a conditional late-round draft pick, ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting.

The 25-year-old Hightower started 13 games for the Cardinals last year and had 153 carries for 736 yards and five touchdowns. He’ll have a good chance of starting in Washington, and his presence could make the Redskins less interested in Ahmad Bradshaw.

The 35-year-old Holliday played in 15 games for the Redskins last year, starting two and recording 2.5 sacks.

Another great Move by the CARDINALS, he is slow but had a great impact in that super bowl year. The new RB that was drafted will better suit the cards offence. Very explosive

Is that the same Holliday that played with my great-grandfather?

Funny thing, he’s was worth more than “No-Arm-Band” McNabb and “It’s all on me, I’m not going to be a bust” or “I don’t even like black women” Haynesworth.

  3. bucks12965 says: Jul 31, 2011 6:15 PM

Why’d the skins bother drafting 2 rbs?

  4. dmitchell624 says: Jul 31, 2011 6:15 PM

Tough Break Tim…….you are going to what’s known as the NFC’s Career wasteland………..

But look at it this way, you gave Vonnie Holliday a get out of jail free card! Enjoy the Shanahan’s!

  5. alphaq2 says: Jul 31, 2011 6:21 PM

Good move for the skins. The skins refuse to overpay and its refreshig. I’ll take hightower for an ancient vonnie holliday everyday of the week. We needed experience at running back and he’s still young. Its better than paying to much for bradshaw. Now address the O-line please.

  6. eaglesfootballfan says: Jul 31, 2011 6:22 PM

This is a bad move for the Cardinals. A 35 year old journeyman DE for an upcoming 25 year old running back.

  7. seandm69 says: Jul 31, 2011 6:23 PM

Wow! The Bidwills and Graves are gutting the payroll. Being a cards fan, i am starting to wonder if we are looking at the beginning of another long rebuilding campaign. I was never a fan of hightower, but to trade him for someone that has long been washed up is ridiculous.

For the worst team in the cfl…
what a bunch of losers. Not exactly the players I mean they suck, but the coaches and F.O. are clueless losers, worse than the Raiders and are on par with Mike Brown’s bengals…
Man, I would hate to be a racistskin fan. They really should just concede this season and hope they get the #1 pick in 2012. There is not a chance in HELL for this team to do anything worth cheering for.

Cardinals are very active this year. What’s gotten into their front office? They finally wake up?

  18. eagleseagleseagles says: Jul 31, 2011 6:34 PM

Hightower’s doesn’t seem to be an off-tackle running back that Shanahan’s system needs. My bet is that he will struggle or Shanahan’s changing his scheme.

  19. atomicpunk says: Jul 31, 2011 6:34 PM

  20. clw1906 says: Jul 31, 2011 6:35 PM

Aram obviously you haven’t seen V Holiday play. Basically that was a salary dump move. The cards are getting a DT from the #31 ranked d last season and were horrible against the run! LMAO

  21. weneedlinemen42 says: Jul 31, 2011 6:35 PM

I’ve been trying to look for the good in the Redskins activity during free agency, but there is just no excuse for this.

We drafted two new running backs and if we wanted a veteran, there are plenty of unsigned backs out there who are better than Tim Hightower. Why are we trading for him?

Even though Holiday was 192 years old, he was our most effective defensive end at times last year. That pick better be very late and the condition better be that he scores the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl.

I suppose one possible explanation is the Vonnie Holiday was the ‘Skins union rep. Last year the front office engineered a trade to essentially get out of paying a draft pick. Swapping players with the Rams before cutting both players. Things might get interesting if Holiday and Hightower both get cut.

  22. dlr4skins says: Jul 31, 2011 6:46 PM

    what’s up with mad5555????????????

I can only assume he’s so angry because the 5’s stand for almosts and not real Super Bowls like the rest of the division.

mad5555 why not just shut the lips until you actually win something. Then you can run your mouth AND throw batteries at Santa.

Go to your stadium’s jail you douche.

  23. larryfitzgerald4mvp says: Jul 31, 2011 6:47 PM

This is a perfect example of the average fan’s stupidity. Everyone comes on here to bash the cardinals, why? They just got defensive depth and a pick for what might have been their 3rd rb.

  24. stylinandprofilin says: Jul 31, 2011 6:48 PM

Wow. I can’t believe the stupidity of some of the comments before me. How can u say this is not a good deal for the skins? They get rid of a 38 year old DE for an experienced but young up and coming running back. Washington continues to bring in young, less expensive talent. Great job shanny. You can see a big difference from the Cerrato/Snyder era. We are signing players who are going into their prime instead of those who are going into retirement. Now we MUST address the offensive line pleaseeeee.

  25. joegibbsisking says: Jul 31, 2011 6:50 PM

People log on to get football news. You clearly know dick about football. Chill out on the Racistskins crap

  26. prior0knowledge says: Jul 31, 2011 6:53 PM

holliday was almost done, hightower is mid career. simple math. hightower > holliday. shanny going back to where he is comfortable: good running game. i think he did holliday a favor because shanny was likely to cut holliday later. now holliday is going someplace where he is needed.

  27. romosexualtendencies69 says: Jul 31, 2011 6:54 PM

Who knew Vonnie Holliday was still in the league?

Hightower will certainly join Shanahan’s rotation RB squad, devoid of any fantasy football usage.

More importantly though, when you join the Redskins, your career is at the end of the line.

    RIP Tim Hightower

  28. kane337 says: Jul 31, 2011 6:59 PM

This is just to diversion to make everyone think they are trying to improve the offense. Shanahan is going for the Andrew Luck sweepstakes.

  29. satanphoenix says: Jul 31, 2011 7:02 PM

Skins-Cards is week 2. You don’t think the ole Mastermind might just be doing this to pump ole Timmy for the hot poop on the Cards?

  30. eaglesdynasty says: Jul 31, 2011 7:10 PM

good move by the Redskins…..Roy Helu Jr. and Tim Hightower should give them a very effective 1-2 punch at HB. Plus Hightower is a terrific receiver out of the backfield and good pass blocker as well.

In reality the Cards probably didnt think they were going to keep Hightower on the 53 man roster anyway so while a 35 year old average DE/DT and a late pick may seem like minimal compensation the alternative was very likely just cutting him.

Another smart move for Washington….crazy what a REAL GM can do for a team, as long as Snyder doesnt get power hungry

  31. vtsquirm says: Jul 31, 2011 7:14 PM

Good move shanallen, now how about some o-line help?

  33. dct333 says: Jul 31, 2011 7:27 PM

I think this was a good trade by the Cards. We obviously drafted Williams for a reason and the Wells-Hightower combo didn’t work too great for us the last couple of years. Yes Hightower helped on our Superbowl quest, but he was more of the pass catcher/blocker while Edge carried the ball. I don’t ever think Hightower was the real answer at RB because we then went and drafted Wells after Edge left. Williams will hopefully be a much better back and fit our system. Maybe we will actually attempt to run the ball a few times a game too now…

Holliday may be old, but he is a vet who should add a bit of depth to our D-Line, plus we got a pick, and it should clear some money (although I doubt Hightower was making too much).

Overall, I am excited about the Cards moves this off season. Taking some risks for sure, but I think definite steps in the right direction.

  34. kmurph1226 says: Jul 31, 2011 7:30 PM

My problem with the Skins is that their going after 3rd and even 4th tier players and expecting to get huge productions out of them. Santana Moss was a good signing, as was Cofield and Wilson. But Gaffeny? Stallworth? Kellen Clemens? Plus they drafted 2 RBs and like 3 WRs. They also have Anthony Armstrong on the roster.

A couple of these players at WR will be wasted when you draft 3 guys plus pick up a couple in FA, not to mention the ones already on your team.

  35. darthhitman says: Jul 31, 2011 7:37 PM

Let’s be real here, with the signing of Heap etc. IF the Cards can land Braylon Edwards for a fair price, a FA period that started HORRIBLY for them could still be salvaged into something…and if they land Braylon should Kolb fail it wouldn’t be do to the org not putting talent around him as he would have more overall talent in Zona than he did in Philly…offensively speaking anyway

  36. birdmantd says: Jul 31, 2011 7:38 PM

C’mon Hightower! Move it, move it! And stop making those sound effect noises Jonesie!

  37. trollhammer20 says: Jul 31, 2011 7:42 PM

As a Seahawks fan, I approve of the ‘Nulls trading a 25 year old RB for a 35 year old DE and a conditional pick.

Hopefully, Hightower doesn’t reach whatever level of performance is necessary to meet those conditions. :D

  38. revengeofthefilthymcnasty says: Jul 31, 2011 7:45 PM

I like the move, Hightower is a great pass catching back. He’s a good pass blocker too, something Washington has missed since Portis is gone. I’m not sold on the way they seem to be avoiding the OLINE needs. It’s like they’re goin cheap on every offensive position, minus Cooley, Big Trent Williams, and Moss.

    @ Mad555

You’re an idiot. Washington is the only franchise to win the big game with a black quarterback. A BIG point of pride.

Is the name “Redskins” racist? Is that your issue?

I guess it depends on who you’re asking but if there was a team named the, “Honkies”, I’d pimp dat sh*t til they buried me in it.

    —————————————-
Torain is injury prone, they released Portis and Keiland Williams is not that talented. That’s why they drafted 2 RB’s. The trade for Hightower was unexpected but too good to pass up. It just means that Royster might go to the practice squad or Williams will be released. Hightower is an upgrade that you can’t pass up. Four RB’s on 53-man roster will be 1. Hightower, 2. Helu, 3. Torain and 4. Royster. Better than last year.

Easy now. Holliday was the most consistent defensive lineman – a relative term to be sure – from last season, and would’ve been an excellent mentor to Jenkins, Bowen, and any other young players in camp and on the roster. He was the player rep, so leadership was a factor here, too.

He would’ve made the roster. Jenkins, Cofield, Bryant, Carriker, and Bowen are going to make the roster, with Neild and Golston possibilities. Holiday would’ve made it. Maybe you could say he would have been a short term fix and occupied a spot that could’ve went to a younger player that may be a piece of the puzzle down the road.

I was of the opinion that we had plenty at HB, but with Keiland Williams working at fullback, Torain injury prone, and Helu and Royster rookies, a little competition from a young, experienced back isn’t too bad. Competition is key here. For far too long Redskins fans have known who was going to make the roster because there was no competition, save for a nominal undrafted rookie.
