Mathis_Evan

The Philadelphia Eagles have announced yet another free agent signing.

Former Bengals guard Evan Mathis has signed with Philadelphia.

Mathis played in 12 games for the Bengals last year, with no starts. In 2009 he started seven games in Cincinnati. Overall he’s started 22 games in seven NFL seasons.

After being a four-year starter at Alabama, Mathis was a third round draft choice of the Panthers in 2005.

    Good move by the Eagles

  2. bobbyhoying says: Jul 31, 2011 7:33 AM

One might guesss the Eagles will have some early season growing pains and then be very good down the stretch when they gel. This team might have 50% new players by time the season begins.

OMG they’re trying to buy a championship!!!

Solid. It’ll be hilarious if they get plax too….., lol at giants and cowboys fans. Redskins don’t count.

A veteran of seven NFL seasons, the 6-5, 302-pound Mathis has played in 58 career games (22 starts) for the Cincinnati Bengals (2008-10), Miami Dolphins (2008), and Carolina Panthers (2005-07).

A third round draft choice of the Panthers in 2005, the 29-year-old played collegiately at Alabama, where he notched a streak of 47 consecutive starts in four seasons.

    The Eagles DREAM-TEAM . . .
is becoming the NFC’s Nightmare !

You know what, if this were the Skins all we’d hear is same old Skins trying to buy a Championship, or Snyder this and that, talk about double standards. As for teams in the NFC having nightmare’s in the words of the famous tenis player “you can’t be serious” !! The Eagles just look like desperado’s.

Maybe the Skins don’t count but we can always knock out your punk ‘dog loving’ QB again, and help our fellow division rivals, then what VY lol !!!!

The Eagles have to be over the cap by now — I’m waiting for the big fire sale next week when they have to release a dozen marquis players to keep all these new acquisitions. They will have stars at every starting position but are likely going to have to sacrifice depth and back all these players up (other than at QB) with league minimum guys. A rash of injuries and they could be in bigger trouble than most teams.

    Don’t know about that ..

Here in Philly,,all the sports headlines have been going to the Phillies and Flyers.

the Eagles don’t like to take a back-seat,,in this
    media-driven sports city.

with the Phillies going for another Championship , the Eagles have said .. “enough is enough” !

    Go for it !

but,,with all the cap-credits Banner has accumulated,
the Eagles definitely can look at their roster, and upgrade where available.

there is just a ton of availability in F.A.’s this year.

the Eagle FO has just been very good at cap-management.

Howie is on a search-and-destroy mission.

  13. deenice810 says: Jul 31, 2011 8:28 AM

Looks like the Eagles are really going for it. Super Bowl or bust.
That’s a lot pressure on Big Red.

  14. The Shoeman says: Jul 31, 2011 8:28 AM

    Eagles Cap . . .

    Current Projected Cap Room

    $8,744,934

they cleared $1.9 mil after yesterdays trade.
without the signing of Cullen Jenkins.

  15. ICDogg says: Jul 31, 2011 8:30 AM

Funny thing is, not only are the Eagles not over the cap, they haven’t really had to make any cap moves, other than unloading Bunkley who would have gotten dumped anyway.

They haven’t renegotiated Vick’s franchise deal which will lower their cap hit for this season. They haven’t used either of the special cap exemptions for this season. And they haven’t renegotiated any other contracts for cap flexibility.

They could make more moves if they want to, and likely will, and there won’t be a fire sale.

  16. dennisund says: Jul 31, 2011 8:33 AM

How exactly does a team attempt to buy a championship when there’s a salary cap? Everyone spends the same! The Eagles perennially have lots of cap room left and use some of it to re-sign their own players. Now that there’s a salary minimum, they will obviously spend a little more.

  17. lennydpocketqb says: Jul 31, 2011 8:36 AM

Did they have only 10 players on the roster when the lockout began?

  18. jw731 says: Jul 31, 2011 8:39 AM

“The Eagles have to be over the cap by now”
    ————————————————
Wrong . Before this signing they were 8.7 million under the cap.

  19. 7to10for6allday says: Jul 31, 2011 8:43 AM

Yea philtvc. Lol just like you knocked him out in DC when we raped y’all. You know your team blows when that’s all you got to look forward to, sucka!

  20. 7to10for6allday says: Jul 31, 2011 8:45 AM

Oh phitvc, VY would be way better than what y’all got. Skins got a bunch of high school qb’s, punka$$!

To all eiggle fans before you act like the eiggles are gonna steal Hank Basket I mean Plaxico off the Giants, Hank Basket I mean Plaxico’s meeting with the GIANTS was more like an exit interview ! The GIANTS want nothing to do with him !

Synonyms for Eagles free agents !
Vince Young is like getting Mcnabb back
Plaxico will be like gettingHank Basket back at this point in Plaxico’s career !
Justin Babin is just like gettin Justin Babin Back!
    Cromartie stinks !
    Jenkins Stinks !
One good signing and thats #21 and remember he made his career on those horrific AFC west quarterbacks !
Mathis = any back up lineman in the NFL !

  22. 7to10for6allday says: Jul 31, 2011 8:49 AM

The reason why the redskins “were trying to buy a ring” was bc Snyder was throwing money at over the hill players. We got solid players that can play and we got them for less than market value. They took less to play for us. Nnamdi, cullers and babin could’ve took more money elsewhere and DRC is still in his rookie contact. Keep hatin if you want, thanks in advance for the wins you’re giving us this year! Good luck in the Andrew luck sweepstakes lmao!

  23. blockingsled says: Jul 31, 2011 8:53 AM

Nope, Eagles are still well under the cap by my estimation. Plus, if they redo Vick’s deal and move Asante Samuel, they’ll free up a ton more money.

  24. barnold1993 says: Jul 31, 2011 9:16 AM

After trading bunkley(10.5) and releasing Weaver(5.8) we have 35 Mil in space left and if we trade Samuels(7.8 mil) Or release Cb-Joseloio Hanson(8.5 mil) thats even more cap space.

  25. melonnhead says: Jul 31, 2011 9:19 AM

Solid. It’ll be hilarious if they get plax too….., lol at giants and cowboys fans.

    —————————————————————–

It’ll be hilarious when Andy Reid gets fired because the Eagles underachieve AGAIN after Lurie poured gobs of money into player acquisition. Don’t think that tendering 9 figures worth of player contracts in a matter of a few days puts the onus anywhere but on Reid’s shoulders. Don’t forget that this guy got routinely outcoached by Wade Phillips.

  26. melonnhead says: Jul 31, 2011 9:22 AM

A rash of injuries and they could be in bigger trouble than most teams.

    —————————————————————

A rash of injuries? One or two key injuries would sink them. This is one of the most shallow teams in the NFL. The only place they have quality depth is at cornerback, and that’s only if they keep Samuel.

  27. melonnhead says: Jul 31, 2011 9:31 AM

My sources say Plax signed with the Jets

  28. quizguy66 says: Jul 31, 2011 9:38 AM

This one’s on Marvin – they basically drove this dude out of town. Ridiculous. Good signing by the Eagles.

If you haters knew anything, then you would know the Eagles had a lot of money under the cap going into this season. They also let go all their free agents as well as trading Kolb and Bunkley to open up more money. This crap that they are trying to “Buy” a Superbowl is childish and just shows how ignorant and stupid you people are that complain. Get a life and if you were smart you would realize the Eagles have a lot of players on their roster that they drafted. They are just using what free agency is meant for and that’s to plug holes. So maybe you should be spending more time complaining your teams are sitting around with their dicks in the dirt.

  30. eaglesbest says: Jul 31, 2011 9:52 AM

Listen to all you skins, cowboys, and giants fans crying. Get over it! Eagles were best in the division last year and even better this year. And VY at backup is better then John Beck as starter.

  31. er0ck5 says: Jul 31, 2011 9:58 AM

Some of these comments..let’s not include Evan Mathis as another great addition. Bit player. As to the questions of how do the Eagles have all this money – they had a lot of cap space going in, they have signed these guys at below market value, haven’t been resigning their own players, cut Broderick Bunkley who was due $5 mil. If they can work out a long term deal with Vick, that will give them even more cap room because now he counts for $10 million with the franchise tag.

  32. engwrite says: Jul 31, 2011 10:04 AM

So, all these comments about the cap and paper champs, and comparisons to Snyder come because of a news release about signing a veteran lineman who’s started 22 games in 7 years, none last year. You guys think the Eagles broke the bank to get him? And you think the guys they signed are over paid (Nnami left money on the table and no one wanted Vince Young) and over the hill a la Snyder? You guys are smart.

That is why you know nothing! They are actually still under the cap and can still make a few more moves. Know what you are talking about before you assume.

Actually if u did any research before making uneducated statements, you would know the Eagles are still over $8 million under the cap. I love seeing you guys get so bent out of shape because unlike our division rivals, I.e. Cowboys and Redskins, we actually know how to manage our cap and spend money wisely

  36. cleverbob says: Jul 31, 2011 10:46 AM

I should have made it very clear that I was being sarcastic to point out how ridiculously everyone responds to every single roster move made by the Eagles. Some of the signings are huge, others are just typical transactions to fill out your roster. Trying to trash every single move is just sour grapes.

OMG they’re trying to buy a championship!!!

What does that mean in the NFL? How can you buy a championship when every team has the same ability to go out and buy? The Eagles and Patriots just proved that their FO knows how to get things done. Eagles have this money because they have a lot of explosive weapons still on their rookie contracts.

  41. 7to10for6allday says: Jul 31, 2011 2:33 PM

I love how retards rip the eagles for not having a SB. Even if they win back to back, people will find something else to rip about. let me ask this: how is that last SB win treating you now redskins, cowboys and giants?? Redskins have sucked a$$ since 91, cowboys have 1 playoff win in like 18 years and giant are 0-7 vs eagles Inc playoffs since theirs so dont sit there and flex when some of y’all aren’t even old enough to remember that SB. Lmao! Eagles have managed their cap nicely to add these players. So for all my eagle brethren, enjoy the 2011 season. I know I will.

  42. andyreidisfat says: Jul 31, 2011 2:49 PM

The big difference between the Redskins and the Eagles is, the Eagles are under paying for guys still in their prime. The Redskins over payed for old guys who didn’t even fit their system.

But the biggest difference is that the Eagles scout well and the Redskins don’t. The give smart contracts for them and the redskins don’t. The Eagles are one of the better drafting teams in the NFL (if you take first round away) and the Redskins arn’t. But mostly the Eagles know that no matter how much you spend or who you sign if you don’t have two QB’s that can play you can’t win. And no matter what the redskins just don’t get this. The skins even though they have had top picks over the last ten years have refused to spend a first on a QB. It is almost impossible to sign a great QB or even trade for one. And washington refuses to realize this.

the difference is the Redskins have constantly mortgaged the future to afford the present. they have drafted at a below average level and have OVERPAID for aging and/or declining veterans in free agency.

The Eagles draft very well and the core of the team is still built from the draft

on top of that they are getting smart players at good value. For instance they signed Nnamdi for a yearly average that is only slightly higher than what the Raiders gave Stanford Routt, the same as the Eagles signed Asante for several seasons ago and less than the Niners gave Clements several years ago.

Cullen Jenkins also got a very low deal and the Eagles insured the move by making it possible to cut him after 2011 and make the deal a one year 4 million dollar signing. SMART. Jason Babin’s deal didnt break the bank at all…..he is a better fit for the Eagles than Charles Johnson or Ray Edwards would have been at half the money. Plus Babin allows Brandon Graham to progress and take over in a year or two without having a ridiculously overpaid free agent signing then becoming a backup.

Johnnie Lee Higgins, Donald Lee and Evan Mathis were all smart, cheap signings that add depth at positions of need.

DRC is still on his rookie deal and his cap number is very low, plus Vince Young is a cheap high potential signing.

On top of that the Eagles go into the 2012 draft already with a extra 2nd and extra 5th round pick, where as the Redskins usually sell off all their picks and go into the draft very shorthanded. The Eagles have brought in a TON of talent, all at great prices and still have an eye on the future—-exactly OPPOSITE of Snyder. haha.

Plus we parted ways with always injured Stewart Bradley, overpaid Ernie Sims, WAY overpaid Brodrick Bunkley, declining Quintin Mikell, average player Omar Gaither and will likely move on from Daryl Tapp and Juqua Parker…….had we re-signed all those players it would have come close to the money we spent in FA!! so in reality we moved on from overpaid and/or declining players, brought in top notch players at great values and added valuable draft picks for 2012 to build the future.

yea, I guess to someone who is completely uninformed and is just a hater that sounds like Daniel Synder….haha. moron
