Overweight Deuce Lutui flunks Bengals physical, returns to Cardinals

On Friday the Bengals signed free agent guard Deuce Lutui, formerly of the Cardinals. But free agent signings don’t become official until players pass a physical, and in the case of Lutui, that didn’t happen.

Lutui failed his physical with the Bengals, and Adam Schefter reports that it’s because Lutui showed up overweight.

There’s no word on just how overweight Lutui was when he showed up for the physical. He’s officially listed at 338 pounds, but his weight has always been a problem: He once reported to the Cardinals at 396 pounds.

Considering that the Bengals drafted Andre Smith No. 6 overall shortly after he worked out looking like this, it’s hard to imagine just how overweight you have to be to fail a physical with the Bengals. Unless Lutui ate the doctor, I’m not sure what he did to fail the physical.

In any event, the Cardinals can live with Lutui’s morbid obesity. Shortly after Lutui failed to get cleared in Cincinnati, Arizona re-signed him. Lutui started all 48 games for the Cardinals over the last three seasons, and he’ll likely start again for them this year, no matter how much he weighs.

  1. The Bengals gave Deuce the deuces but if Deuce uses losts of laxatives, he’ll be dropping non-stop deuces and will lose weight

  2. Just kill me now. Mike Brown: Punching fans in the face since 1981. Hit me again Mike.

  3. You can’t make this stuff up. The Bengals are having the worst off season ever.

Mike Brown is sitting on close to $50 million and he isn’t spending a dime.

This is the worst…. Until next year.

  4. Double “4 bills” Deuce Lutui and Floyd “Pork Chop” Womack! This is why the Cardinals will always be my team.

  5. Too bad Las Vegas doesn’t have an NFL franchise. We could pay Deuce Lutui with Bellagio Buffets.

  6. The guy has obviously shown that he can play effectively at that weight.

Were the Bengals somehow unaware that he had a tendency to show up overweight?

Actually, it’s entirely possible they didn’t know, as their “scouting department” apparently consists of Mike Brown reading fantasy football player rankings on the toilet.

  7. What is with these players from Hawaii showing up to training camp overweight ? Vince Manuwai showed up at Jaguars camp overweight and out of shape and got cut. What do these guys eat during the offseason ? A lot of spam I guess

  8. As a Steeler fan, I obviously root against any good news for the Bengals, Browns and (especially) the Ravens.

But, seriously, I feel bad for loyal Bengals fans. Losing Palmer and Joseph, now this… it just keeps going on and on.

Everyone is Cincinnati knows the real problem. An owner who won’t hire a G.M., won’t pay for an indoor practice facility, won’t assemble and pay for a real scouting staff, and who won’t spend the $120 million that every other team is trying to stay under.

When the Bengals lose the Steelers benefit, but I really do feel bad for the loyal fans… I seriously hope, somehow, you guys can lose your owner.

  9. The funny thing is, Deuce will lose all of that weight in a few weeks and will be back to his playing weight around 340. It just shows a lack of off-season dedication when you show up to a physical 60-70 pounds overweight and that is why the Cards have had issues with him. John Lott will get his mind(and body) right and he’ll be solid this year but we’ll be back to the same old story next off-season

  10. The new Haynesworth, minus the law suits and beating the crap out of citizens part. GJ Duecer!

  11. they sign a guy that can’t pass a physical, they loose one of the top 3 corners in free agency, They resign a RB that beat the hell out of his “roommate”/boyfriend, they are 45 million under the cap and they are making Hamilton county spend $300,000 to put in a new video replay board for the stadium.

  12. Why hasn’t Andre Smith “flunk a test?”

Smith and Lutui would flunk their physicals just by taking their shirts off!!!

  13. The only way Mike Brown spends the 90% cap requirement is if he’s financially punished otherwise. If it means losing draft picks or something similar, he won’t care.

  14. I feel bad for Bengals fans as well. Still hoping Carson will just show up as the season opens to force Mike to pay what he owes him.

But in fairness to Andre Smith, if the other guys his size had worked out shirtless, they’d have looked just like that. All the linemen competing at the Combine next year need to make a memo to themselves: Wear shirt. 😉

  15. You guys are cold. Can’t you see this was his plan. Deuce has a twisted sense of humor. He just wanted to see who would pick him up then drop him after seeing him immediately compete in a white castle hamburger contest. Then back to az which after a few weeks with our strength and conditioning coach will be back to normal…. Hahahaha

Oh, of course. (me slapping my forehead) That is completely plausible. How could we all be so stupid?!?

He went through the process of negotiating and signing a contract, then gained a whole lot of weight really fast, flew to Cincy to take fail a physical, flew back to Arizona, negotiated and signed a contract (probably for less money), and now will go on a crash diet and exercise program all for a laugh.

Yes, now that you explain it, I am sure that is exactly what happened.

  17. Dear PFT,

As a lifelong Bengals fan I am abundantly aware of the woes of my team and their past seasons riddled with heartaches and lack of achievement. Thanks for another sarcastic laced reminder.

It may come as a surprise to you, but even the most casual of NFL fans are also aware of my team’s shortcomings. Therefore, I humbly submit to you the following idea: your repetitious belittlement of the Bengals and your regurgitation of embarrassing moments (see Andre Smith photo used for 2nd time in as many months) is a poor substitute for real sports journalism and is essentially laziness on your part to do a decent job reporting on an otherwise exciting and interesting sport.

If a sports writer’s words constituted a physique , you would be less fit than Andre Smith was at his worst blubbery moment.
