Kamerion Wimbley cashes in

Though the Raiders weren’t able to keep their highest-profile free agent, they ensured that this year’s franchise player won’t be following Nnamdi Asomugha out of town in 2012.

Jason LaCanfora of NFL Network reports that the Raiders have agreed to terms on a five-year contract with linebacker Kamerion Wimbley.  He’ll earn $48 million, with $29 million guaranteed.

Earlier this year, Wimbley signed a one-year, $11.3 million franchise tender, which means that he has, as a practical matter, signed a four-year extension with $36.7 million in new money and $17.7 million in new guarantees.

But, yeah, $48 million and $29 million guaranteed sounds a heck of a lot better.

A first-round pick of the Browns in 2006, Wimbley arrived in Oakland via trade during the 2010 offseason.  The Raiders gave up a third-round pick in the 2010 draft to get him.

Per NFL.com’s player page, Wimbley had 9.0 sacks last season.  He has 35.5 for his five-year career.

This may seem like a bit too much money, but it was a great trade last year. He had a very solid year last season, and is coming into the prime of his career.

  4. majorseahawk says: Aug 1, 2011 8:11 PM

They are doing this because they are scrambling to not lose Zach Miller. Cmon Hawks! Get it done, it would be a huge steal.

  5. yelix says: Aug 1, 2011 8:12 PM

Went to the same high school as me, though not at the same time. He’s probably a good guy, but as a Chiefs fan, I’m always suspicious of a Raider.

this signing solidifies a solid front 7 for the raiders

  7. raider13pdx says: Aug 1, 2011 8:13 PM

He deserves every cent. He’s a beast. Clevland never utilized him correctly, and had him playing out of position. He flourished in Oaklands scheme. He’s going to wreck havoc these next 5 years. Now sign Zach Miller Al now that you are under the cap. And hurry before the Seachickens snake him.

  8. snnyjcbs says: Aug 1, 2011 8:17 PM

The Raiders made the decision that Nnamdi would not be coming back with a few games left last year after he refused to take a shot for a minor injury to help the Team in the Playoff push. The Raiders did not make any offer to retain Nnamdi prior to him signing with Philly.

Funny how all these other Fans always talk down Raider players and when one comes available they (*&^ all over themselves hoping to land them. They had the Al Davis “reach”, and who people were calling a “Bust” during his first couple years into the second coming. lol

  9. 808raiderinparadise says: Aug 1, 2011 8:20 PM

He is enetering his prime, he can rush the passer violently and has pure strength and athleticism for the run D. Overpaid? Sure but not by that much, plenty of teams wanted him after he was used correctly in OAK.

When did anyone talk bad about Nnamdi the last 5 years ???? he’s pretty much agreed apon the best or 2nd best corner in the league.

Why would the Seachickens spend big money on a tight end don’t they still have Carlson who played pretty well and was a first round pick like 2 years ago. And more than why would they spend money on another pass catcher when they dont have a QB to throw it.

  14. raiduhdude says: Aug 1, 2011 8:34 PM

Well so long miller, thanks Al you useless prick. Wimbley better lead the league in everything.

  15. dannymac17 says: Aug 1, 2011 8:39 PM

Wimbley has played for the Browns and the Raiders, two of the WORST franchises for the past decade. I doubt he cares about winning, otherwise he would have tested the market. By then, he and everyone knew, no-one would give up the farm and a lot of cap space. Made sense for the Raiders. Commitment to Excrement.

  18. woods546 says: Aug 1, 2011 8:51 PM

@raiduhdude- They had to sign Wimbley long-term to lower his would-be 11.3 mil cap number. Creating cap space is needed to secure Miller. That is, if it’s not too late. I’m really, really hoping it’s not too late.

  19. allforfunnplay says: Aug 1, 2011 8:51 PM

People criticize the Raiders for overpaying for Free Agents. But if you think about it they have no choice but to overpay. Any Free Agent has the decision to play for a sane and possibly winning team or the Raiders. Money is the only reason choose to play for the Raiders. So in order to acquire Free Agents or hold on to their Players that may become Free Agents, the Raiders have no choice but to overpay until (IF) they start winning again.

    ———————————————

And now, instead of just throwing some Raider bashing down so you can use your tired line at the end, some rational thought.

Wimbley couldn’t test the market. He was signed to the Browns, traded to the Raiders, franchise-tagged for THIS year, and signed essentially to a new contract. He hasn’t been allowed to test the market yet.

And, if you’re about to say he could wait until next year, who in their right mind would turn down $29 million guaranteed, knowing something catastrophic could happen this year, like a career-ending injury? It was a no-brainer for him.

Sorry, no tired catch-phrase to end my point.

  23. allforfunnplay says: Aug 1, 2011 9:18 PM

    @albigverg

well, no one else here has mentioned the fact that the Raiders have no choice but to overspend for Free AGents so at least I added to the conversation.

he doesnt have to sign that franchise tag is the point smart guy. coulda forced a trade, why would you wanna play for the terrible raiders who’s only highlight since 02 was an 8 win season?

he doesnt care about winning, nor does he think the raiders will just up and win the division to get him a ring.

  25. borisbulldog says: Aug 1, 2011 9:25 PM

Shame the Browns didn’t fire Mangina 1 year earlier, then Wimbley could have been the 43 rush end they need now!

So your solution is that he “forces a trade”? Outstanding. It worked out for Carson Palmer…wait, he’s sitting at home right now. And if you think the Bengals are going to refuse to be forced into making a move, maybe you haven’t met Al Davis.

  27. randysavage4ever says: Aug 1, 2011 9:34 PM

    @raiduhdude…

WTF did you just say about Al?

Al Davis invented the Raiders, he is the team, and the team is him…

say that when we tailgate this year and get tossed over the bridge like jay did mobb deep…

if you don’t get down with Al ryde or die then go be a fan of the 0 superbowl win Chargers, or 1 superbowl win chiefs, or the 2 salary cap proven cheating broncos…

we dont need cancers like you calling Al Davis, I won’t even repeat because your a joke.

For the rest of Raider Nation on PFT, very solid as usual, proud to be a part of the REAL Raider Nation…

not the ones who are gonna diss the owner and man who invented everything there is about being a Raider.

And Asomugha is an East Coast sellout for the cash, dont get it twisted Revis is better, and Asomugha will go down the month of October along with Vick, and the “dream team”

Philly took Asomugha cool, we’re ok with that, because we played Philly in a Superbowl and won, and thats more important then an overrated corner who wants to be Denzel Washington and start acting…thats laughable

1 Friday Night Lights appearence and now he wants an Oscar? ha

  28. Chairman Al says: Aug 1, 2011 9:35 PM

Sorry, I typed rather quickly, I may not have been clear in my last point. The Bengals didn’t budge when Carson Wanted a trade, and he was much more of a key member of the team. The Raiders and Al Davis are even less likely to budge if anyone would try a stunt like that.

It’s obvious all you Raider haters don’t even watch this team play. Wimbley was a damn animal for us this year. He had 9 sacks! In a league where pass rush and sacks are so highly regarded you want to say he is overrate or sucks? He had more sacks then Mario Williams, Julius Peppers, Ray Edwards, etc.

This Raider team was 2nd in sacks in the league last year. This front 7, D-Line is only going to be better.

Just keep on hating. You wish you had Wimbley on your team.

    ————–

Not true. The Raiders have a choice. It’s kind of the chicken-egg thing. The Raiders have been horrible in part BECAUSE they keep overpaying free agents. Like you said, money is the only reason a free agent will choose to play for the Raiders, so they end up signing guys who’s only motivation is money. But those are the exact type of players a good team wants to avoid – you’ll never win with a locker room full of guys who only care about the money.

The Raiders’ other option is to draft well, and stop overpaying for mediocre talent which ends up preventing them from building a solid roster top-to-bottom. It wasn’t long ago that the Chargers were in the same place. Nobody really wanted to play for them, and guys like David Boston would get huge checks and never live up to it. Losing seasons every year.

People talk bad about AJ Smith’s “attitude” but he came in and, starting with Eli Manning in ’04 and continuing to VJ in ’10, he’s let it be known that the franchise would not be held hostage, hijacked, or pushed around. They’ve given huge contracts to Rivers, Gates, Dielman, Jammer, Phillips, and now Weddle, to name a few, so it’s not a matter of being cheap. You draft well, show that you’ll pay market-price to resign your own talent, and fill the minor holes with FA who just want to win. Eventually, you’re a contender, and free agents will want to play for you, even if the GM is a big meanie. But Al hasn’t drafted well, and spends his money on guys like Javon Walker, Tommy Kelly, Gibril Wilson, DeAngelo Hall, etc.

  37. stevincinci says: Aug 1, 2011 10:19 PM

Not that good in Cleveland. Apparently all it takes is the right coach to bring your abilities out of you.

Why is Undead Al constantly inflating the value of his own players? He is constantly raising the house in a bidding war against his own imagination.

Does anyone think any team in their right mind would’ve paid Stanford Routt(ed) $10 million per? How about John Henderson’s contract? I mean, Jeesus Louisus!

I understand why he might be motivated to overpay; he’s done such a poor job in so many drafts that when he does hit paydirt with one of his own, he’s in full on panic mode to keep him.

It must be great though, to be an agent if the player you represent is a Raider. That’s a heckuva fat commission!

  40. sharkcatcher says: Aug 1, 2011 10:36 PM

LOL Raider fans are quick to remember 2 games in 2010 rather than the 13-14 before that since they were beaten by the Bucs.

You guys LOVE to talk about history, just not that part right? I understand.

Talking about cant wait to beat us again. That’s funny, you still finished 3rd. That’s also a fact.

  42. orthodoxdj says: Aug 1, 2011 11:18 PM

    Let’s talk recent history.

    The Raiders swept their division.

Sweeping the division means they beat the best defense in the league twice (Chargers).

59-14 over Denver in Denver (it wasn’t worse because the Raiders let the clock run out).

With nothing to play for, Oakland schooled KC in KC, last game of the year. Way to represent for your fans, KC.

I’m of the opinion that Cable was indeed the problem. Hue Jackson is the reason the Raiders got better. People want to play for him and he knows what he’s talking about.

I’ll talk about older history if you want. Yeah, from 2003 to 2009 my team SUCKED. This is 2011. If a string of bad years means a team sucks no matter what, then pretty much every team sucks. It happens. What’s cool is when things turn around (and they will turn around) and you’re able to enjoy it deeply because during those losing years you still watched the games, still wore the gear, and still kept up hope.

You’d better hope your team is better at football than you are at talking smack.

  43. bwisnasky says: Aug 1, 2011 11:46 PM

Does anyone think any team in their right mind would’ve paid Stanford Routt(ed) $10 million per?

    ————————————–

I think paying 10 mil a year for a guy that has a lower percentage of passes completed against him than any other cornerback in the league makes sense… not to mention one that stays pretty healthy. Check Stats, Inc. if you don’t believe me… and he was thrown at 3 times as much as Aso and Revis…. Raiders will be fine without Aso. I harbor no ill will toward him.. but his loss isn’t going to be as great as everyone likes to believe it is….

  44. cbass59 says: Aug 1, 2011 11:55 PM

With no secondary they need to keep overpay everyone they have who is decent (even Cleveland mistakes).

When will Raider fans realize they have no chance with their current ownership? I know you can’t change it but just like WASH, CIN and CLE, you’ll never win because of who owns your team. Yes, Davis has won one and got robbed of a potential one (tuck rule) but it’s over guys. Face facts. Forcing Jamarcus Russell on the coaches is just the tip of the iceberg.

  45. ballsecurity says: Aug 1, 2011 11:58 PM

    __________

what does the 1980 Superbowl have to do with this year?

well, it has to do with the face that the Eagles have never won a superbowl period, and thats because of us, and thats all that matters, rings. And the Raiders denied 1 for philly and in dramatic fashion. See football is not about this year or the next, its about the rings, and you have none so shut up.

#2) Last time we played Jamarcus Russell was our QB and we still beat you. Zach Miller ran over Asante Samuel and we sacked McNabb 6 times. We only needed 13 points by Jamarus Russell to beat you, that was in 2009.

You wanna bet? , bet your life on it.
