The highest remaining player on our Top 80 free agents list continues to wait for a new contract. It looks like tight end Zach Miller will get that contract to stay in Oakland.
“People close to the situation paint a picture of Miller being told by the Raiders to be patient, wait for the Raiders to tie up other loose ends and free up the necessary salary cap room so that they can give him the kind of contract he deserves,” Steve Corkran of the Oakland Tribune writes.
The Raiders were expected to spend big to keep Miller all along, but we remain surprised one of the most complete players at his position in all of football hasn’t received more offers elsewhere. At least that we know about.
“Zach is still a free agent, and I’ve talked to him several times, and hopefully that situation will be resolved soon,” coach Hue Jackson said.
Corkran writes Miller will be back with the Raiders, likely by Thursday, barring a “last-minute jaw dropping offer” from another team and a change of heart from Oakland.
Al Davis has spent plenty to retain his key guys since the end of last season. Miller has probably been the organization’s most consistent player since 2007, so the only surprise here is that it has taken so long to get his deal.
