Browns lose punter Reggie Hodges for season

AP

The Browns thought enough of punter Reggie Hodges last year that they signed him to an extension through 2012.

Now they are stuck looking for a punter once again because of an injury Hodges suffered Tuesday at training camp.  Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reports Hodges will miss the 2011 season after tearing his Achilles tendon in practice.

It’s a significant loss for Cleveland’s special teams.  Hodges was in the top ten last year in net punting average.

  1. Gotta feel bad for Hodges.

He’s been a journeyman. He finally finds his niche with the Browns and this happens. Good luck Mr. Hodges.

  2. Poor guy.

This injury to him as well as others like the Bengals linebacker will just give Desean Jackson more ammunition in his holdout and probably make him more likely to continue to hold out.

Hate seeing injuries like this to players even within the same the division. I don’t mind seeing a guy get knocked out of a game as long as it isn’t serious or someone on my team but you can’t help but to feel for these guys sometimes.

  3. The way things are going, the most significant thing we’ll hear concerning the Cleveland Browns is “and with the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns pick…”

Face it fellow Browns fans, this is going to be a horrible year.

  4. I was just thinking today that there was no way that the Giants would end up keeping two punters this season (Weatherford and Dodge), but maybe now its not such a crazy idea anymore.

Ok enough is enough from Philly fans. You guys have done what I thought was impossible, you have replaced Steeler fans for the destinction of, lets turn every PFT post into a forum to discuss my team.

I am trying to figure out how you related the injury to the Browns punter to the holdout of the Eagles Wide Reciever.

One plays offense, the other special teams.
one is hurt, the other holding out for a contract
one plays in the AFC, the other in the NFC
One plays in the conference’s north division, the other in it’s conferences east division.

Congrats Eagles and their fans, you have in less than a week replaced the Jets as the most hated team/fan base in the NFL.

Sure and why not keep 3 long snappers while you’re at it?

Yes, it is a crazy idea to keep 2 punters. Unless you are the Giants, then you should keep 0 punters and have one of your best tacklers punt.

Dear lord, the steelers have guys on here who just post “6 rings, deal with it” to every post. And somehow this guy made Philly fans hated because he surmised that DeSean would use injuries as leverage to holdout?

I’m pretty sure throwing snowballs at Santa and cheering for Irvin’s injury would cast a much worse light then a few days of free agent braggin.

I think it’s been appropriately labeled Rosterbation already

  8. Damn. Already? Wow. Sorry, Browns fans. Hate to see that happen to any team.

In B4 the “blame the lockout” birds…

First off I am a skins fan. This story directly relates to the Desean holdout as the worry of injury tied together with his low salary and not much time left on his contract is the reason he is holding out in the first place.

As much as it sucks for Hodges, he just signed a contract extension so he has guaranteed money for at least this season. He has security which is exactly why Desean is holding out.

I didn’t trying to make this about philly but let’s be real, there are a good number of fans who don’t have a clue who this guy is and the Desean holdout is one of the big stories at the moment.

I feel bad for Hodges, I really do but seriously dude he is just a punter. His misfortune as well as the bengals LB injury immediately made me think of the Michael Irvin piece on NFL network where he was campaigning for DJ to get a new contract and arguing why he deserves it.

It just never ends… Significant preseason injuries “in training camp” for the Browns just never ends…

    I just shake my head.

True, but if our punter is the only guy that goes down I’ll take it. That being said, I feel horrible for Hodges. He had an awesome year for the Browns last season.

  11. I’m sure we aren’t the only ones that deal with this, I’m sure it’s not the case, it can’t be the case, but why the hell does it ALWAYS happen to us?!?!?!

This is such garbage. The punter?!?!?! WHY?!?!?!

The best part of the whole thing is that the Eagles will be right there with the whole package within reach and Vick will do what Vick does…force a bad throw or scramble and take another hit that he won’t recover from for a couple of weeks.
If the Eagles had Rodgers, Ryan, Brees, Manning or Brady, they’d be completely untouchable. With this ex-con, they’ll be lucky to make the second round of the playoffs. Happens every year when he gets pasted, and what’s not too surprising, he never learns.

  13. If any good can be said about this it is good that it happened at the beginning of training camp. Achilles is a 10-11 month injury, and had this happened at any point during the season it would have been difficult at best to attempt a comeback before the beginning of the 2012 season.

Rest up & get well, Reggie Hodges.
