Eagles have a good problem with Asante Samuel

Asante Samuel, Derek Hagan AP

The Giants seem to have a problem on their hands with Osi Umenyiora, even if the team has most of the leverage in the situation.

In Philadelphia, the uncertainty surrounding Asante Samuel doesn’t seem as dire.  The Eagles are clearly open to trading Samuel, but they should be able to fit his $5.9 million salary under the cap.

Then again, Samuel doesn’t seem pleased with the situation.

“I want to be where I’m wanted,” Samuel said via the Philadelphia Inquirer. “If they’re tired of my big playmaking ability, they can ship me out.”

Team President Joe Banner joined PFT Live Monday to give his stance on the matter. Unless the team can get a quality pick for Samuel, we don’t see why they have to move him.

  6. 07vrod says: Aug 2, 2011 12:03 PM

With all the 3 WR sets that teams run, why not keep 3 quality DB’s…with Asante’s ball stalking ability, I think he would make a great nickle back and have a shnit load of int’s this year. Mr. Samuel, you ARE wanted in Philly!

  7. medtxpack says: Aug 2, 2011 12:04 PM

i guess that picture is the only one they good find of him actually making a play that he 100% was in on. i still think hes slightly over-rated. the eagles keeping him will only make him better being around Nmadi, but he needs an attitude adjustment. and one things for sure, he cant cover Jermichael Finley, in fact no one on the Eagles can…

  8. ijr213 says: Aug 2, 2011 12:05 PM

Simple solution, convert one of these players into a FS. I would think that Nnamdi would be the easiest selection as he is the least durable of the crew, is an absolute hawk, and would be the best fit out there. With Quintin Mikell leaving via FA, they have a void there.

  9. nineroutsider says: Aug 2, 2011 12:08 PM

Samuel will start anyway, DRC will play nickel. I don’t understand why this is a story. 3 corners is what you want these days facing teams like the Packers, Colts, and Pats.

The Eagles seem solid up front and in the defensive backfield, but who are their backers? I could see them struggling with the ground game this year.

  10. mikea311 says: Aug 2, 2011 12:09 PM

  11. CKL says: Aug 2, 2011 12:10 PM

Hey Asante, I thought you were finally happy now that you “G[ot] Rich to This”.
Guys leave for the $$ all the time, just like he did with the Pats. It’s their right as a FA and I don’t begrudge that one bit. What I hate is when they lie and say it’s so they can have a chance to win a championship.

  12. scudbot says: Aug 2, 2011 12:12 PM

And exactly who is going to replace him, and for how much? If they let him get away, I’d like to hear an end to the smug talk about how smart the Eagles front office is.

  13. dgreenfi says: Aug 2, 2011 12:16 PM

Eagles will trade Joselio Hanson, not Asante.

  14. lionpride10 says: Aug 2, 2011 12:22 PM

  16. patswhatsup says: Aug 2, 2011 12:25 PM

I think they should turn asante into the roamer personally. Put him in on the slot guy, let him jump those routes if necessary. He would have backup so being more aggressive would be a good thing. I could see a record season for interceptions if the cut him loose like that.

I’m a pats fan, and I miss asante personally.

  17. CKL says: Aug 2, 2011 12:26 PM

HAHHAHA, love you too Eagles fans. :) You that in love with Asante that I can’t take a smack at him? And that is who the smack was at, not your team. You know, because how dumb is it that a guy who already had 2 rings would expect anyone to buy the lameness of leaving to win rings.

  18. jstiffler21550 says: Aug 2, 2011 12:27 PM

You know what happens when you have two or three shutdown corners? One of them gets picked on. Just ask Deangelo Hall what happened when he was opposite of Nnamdi. Some one will lose their ” shutdown” status just wait and see.

  19. patswhatsup says: Aug 2, 2011 12:28 PM

    @lionpride10

I do think it would be fun to see him play in Detroit. I would like to see him go up against cutler, rogers, and helllllllooooo McNabb! Hahaha!

    Lions are on the rise

  20. laeaglefan says: Aug 2, 2011 12:29 PM

The Eagles could have the best defensive backfield in NFL history, but teams will be able to run up and down the field on them. They key to making the whole thing work is a very good defensive line.

  21. ksteff51 says: Aug 2, 2011 12:29 PM

As an eagles fan, I think they should move Samuels to one of the safety positions. We need more depth there and his playmaking ability.

  22. ICDogg says: Aug 2, 2011 12:30 PM

They have 3 of the best CB’s in the league, and have to figure out what to do. These guys are all used to playing full time, and deservedly so.

None of them is really a candidate for safety (plus they already have a free safety they like).

I think they would have to design a base nickel defense that allows for two press corners and an off corner. And exactly how that works, takes a better defensive mind than me.

  24. virger says: Aug 2, 2011 12:36 PM

Green Bay showed how important it is to have 3 solid CB’s on their run last year, Woodson, Williams, Shields. Don’t know why they would dump Asante unless they got an unreal offer.

    —————————————–

In Wishful-Thinking Land the Giants have 3 good CBs, but back here on Planet Reality they have 1 good CB (Webster), 1 decent QB (Thomas) and a rookie who is unproven (Prince).

The idea of comparning Nnamdi, Asante and DRC to those 3 is just ridiculous. The Eagles CBs probably have about 12 Pro Bowl appearances and the Giants have, ummmm, zero.

Nnamdi was a safety in college and played there most of his life, I think that makes him eligible to play safety.

  29. dclogicatlast says: Aug 2, 2011 12:50 PM

Green Bay played their top 3 corners in 90% of the snaps during the playoffs. Why is playing 3 corners so hard to imagine? Let Nnamdi shut down his side, Asante the right side, and let DRC play the slot.

    ———————————–

Well, he definitely was the best ballhawk, but now with QBs having nowhere good to throw the ball it could end up being Nnamdi or even Nate Allen.

Asante had 35-36 balls thrown his way last year and Nnamdi had 31. These two couldn’t even qualify for DB stats last year because they didn’t hit the minimum threshold as #1 CBs.

On top of that, DRC is the youngest and probably the most physically gifted. He could end up being the stud in 2-3 years

    ——————————–

Wow, talk about sour grapes. Do you have any stats or something besides your “gut feeling” to back that up???

Asante is NOT the best cover guy in the league, but nobody makes big plays like he does. Its all about what your defense wants and Billy B wants a shut-down defense with no name defenders.

Reid and Co have been professing turnovers and big plays on defense since Wes Hopking roamed the Vet.

Honestly, its like comparing the Tampa-2 to a zone blitz scheme. They just dont need the same players.

  40. gmen0820 says: Aug 2, 2011 1:06 PM

Talk about no idea about schemes. Samuels is an off zone corner. The eagles signed to press man corners (DRC and Aso) so they can play press man. Juan Castillo wants to bring heat with his DL and have man coverage. Samuels no longer is a fit. He is an off zone corner like I said.

Whoever thinks that Samuels starts opposite Nnamdi, let me ask you: how did the last, 60 million dollar, off zone corner do opposite Nnamdi? Oh that’s right, he got cut mid way through the season (DeAngelo Hall).

  41. melonvoxveritas says: Aug 2, 2011 1:09 PM

  44. hairpie says: Aug 2, 2011 1:17 PM

Sameuls legacy will forever be the guy that choked and dropped an easy interception in the Sb with the Pats. He’s simply NOT a big play guy, unless he means allowing other teams big plays in the playoffs. no one gets picked on more when it matters most.

Move Asante to Safety? As an Eagles fan it’s embrassing hearing other Eagles fans say that. Safety is the last line of defense and responsible with run defense as well. Asante can’t tackle. Deion makes Asante look Busch League. Apparently many don’t understand the responsiblility of a Safety in the NFL :(

Fellow Eagles Fan: Stop you embrassing comments

  47. snakeplizkn says: Aug 2, 2011 1:27 PM

    [yawn]

Complete non-story. Asante made it clear in the same interview that he wants to stay in Philly, they just stuck a mic in his face on day 1 and he wondered aloud how he will fit in.

Funny to see all the haters try to latch onto this though.

Asante will be traded if it makes sense, if not he will probably keep his spot with Cromartie playing nickel.

  48. andyreidisfat says: Aug 2, 2011 1:28 PM

IMO the Eagles have the top two corners in the league (i put Revis and nnamdi in the same spot at one because they tackle) and they have a up and coming future top 5 CB. It would seem to me that for this season you would keep Samuel only i would do what the PAckers do with Woodson with Nnamdi. I would have Nnamdi play the slot almost as a linebacker, he could cover tight ends and rush QB.

Playing that corner/backer role is what won Woodson DPOy because Woodson can’t cover on the outside anymore.

The only way i would trade Assante is for a starting RT and 2-3 round pick. It might even have to be a 2nd.

  49. kpow55 says: Aug 2, 2011 1:32 PM

Not saying DRC would be a good safety but the Cards did consider playing him there when they drafted him…. if anyone switches positions, it would be him as he’s the slower and stockier of the bunch.

Not happening though, 3 quality DBs is not a problem, keep all, start Asante, use DRC in nickel, etc… then if one goes down you’re covered.

If an AFC contender loses a DB, there is some significant trade value.

  50. We'reFineThere says: Aug 2, 2011 1:34 PM

    ^ not really his legacy…

Hmm… Asante has the most interceptions in the past 5 years, leads active players postseason inteceptions with 7 (9 is the alltime record), holds the alltime record for most postseason pick-6’s with 4 and also the postseason interception return yard record.

The salty Pats fan above remembers the Giants drop, but seems to forget he had an interception in the SB against the Eagles a game in which they won by 3.

  51. janvanflac says: Aug 2, 2011 1:41 PM

You are delusional. Both of them sucked last year.

  52. oldbyrd says: Aug 2, 2011 1:45 PM

  53. theashleyguy says: Aug 2, 2011 1:50 PM

I’d love to see the Seahawks trade for Asante. SI just rated them as having done the third best job in the League in Free Agency. They have shored up everything except cornerback (and possibly QB). They are still $21 million under the cap so they can pay him a fortune. And you would have a couple of Pro Bowlers playing cornerback.

  54. jordan52187 says: Aug 2, 2011 1:50 PM

enough of the talk of moving one of the three to safety, eagles picked safeties in the 2nd round back to back years, they are staying with those guys. they will be either keeping all 3 cbs or trading samuel

Because they’re worth talking about. What do the cowboys have going for them? Miles Austin, and DWare are your big time players. Now for the Eagles : Vick, Jackson, Maclin, McCoy, Cole, Babin, Jenkins, DRC, Nnamdi (haha), Samuel just to name a few. The Eagles are an exciting team to read about. The cowboys put all their focus on signing Nnamdi and how did that work out for you?

  56. theashleyguy says: Aug 2, 2011 1:54 PM

Wow are you serious? DRC is by far the fastest out of the 3 (not saying he’s anywhere near the best though). And he’s probably the leanest also, so I don’t know where your getting slow and stocky, you need to watch more DRC tape. None of these corners will be moved to safety! The Eagles have taken 2 safeties the past 2 drafts, and both in the second round! They put high value on these guys and they’re going to play. To those who say they wont start Jaiquann Jarett because he’s a rookie, well you probably said the same thing last year with Nate Allen and Kurt Coleman.

  58. dafixisin says: Aug 2, 2011 2:03 PM

I think Hoodie should consider a reunion with Asante in New England. I think the Pats have one more significant move left in the tank. I’m sure Peyton Manning would just LOVE this.

Lofa Tatutpu: why not? He seems to have that NE Patriots type of makeup at LB. Didn’t his pops play for the Pats? Lofa is like the Polynesian Tedy Bruschi.

  59. sasquash20 says: Aug 2, 2011 2:05 PM

The Eagles DL will be much improved with the additions of Babin, Jenkins, and most importantly coach Washburn. The pressure they will generate will be up 15 – 20 percent at least. That means a ball hawk like Samuel should thrive. DRC is questionable player at best. Hes targeted more then both Samuel, and Asomugha. Samuel was targeted 3.2 times a game last season(and picked the ball off about once every 5-6 passes), Asomugha only 2 times a game. You can’t teach ball hawking skills like that. If they move Samuel they have no chance at winning anything. DMC isn’t the answer! Also I think the Eagles should cut V.Young right now. That dream team statement will hurt us more then anything he does on the field helps us.

I think that the Eagles offense will be explosive enough that most teams will find themselves in a shootout and that is reason enough to keep all 3 all pro corners. I agree that we may be weak or untested at LB but with the Dline upgrades i cant imagine teams are gonna run the ball with ease. Eagles D will be in the top 3 this yr and the O will put up more pts this yr than last. I cant wait for the season to start so the stats and wins start talking for themselves, and all the cowgirls, potatoeskins and giant fans will only have there SB wins from the 80s and 90s to defend themselves. He has knee issues and has gained a few lbs….. maybe he’s got great vertical speed in his practice tapes from 2008 but recently he’s torched more often than not and has been iffy keeping up with cuts, hitches…. basic coverage in general.

Not saying he WOULD make a good safety, just saying it was considered until they realized, he’s not the biggest playbook/smarts guy.

Now that he’s slowing and lacks the smarts to compensate (e.g Woodson, Sanders, etc…) he’s a shell.

Basically he’s depth for 2 better players paired with a #2 pick for an unproven QB.

Cheese curds kind of are on the food pyramid. I believe they would fall into the dairy section.

The Eagles have two very good CBs and one grossly overrated CB (DRC). The Packers have six legitimate receiving threats – Jennings, Jones, Nelson, Driver, Cobb… oh, and that freak of nature Jermichael Finley. On top of that they have by far the best QB in the NFC throwing them the ball… Not to mention the running game that they torched you with in the playoffs last year.

Sorry, the Eagles made a lot of flashy moves, but they still haven’t closed the gap.

i guess that picture is the only one they good find of him actually making a play that he 100% was in on. i still think hes slightly over-rated. the eagles keeping him will only make him better being around Nmadi, but he needs an attitude adjustment. and one things for sure, he cant cover Jermichael Finley, in fact no one on the Eagles can…

dude you clearly dont watch this guy play. this guy is already around the ball and is always trying to make plays. he is 100% every play and sometimes that can lead to problems because hes always going for the ball when he shouldnt be. but he always plays 100% for sure.
