Eagles sign Ryan Harris

Harris_Ryan

The Philadelphia Eagles still aren’t done making moves.

Free agent offensive tackle Ryan Harris, formerly of the Broncos, has signed with the Eagles.

Although Harris isn’t the kind of big-name signing that has earned the Eagles the “Dream Team” (or “all-hype team“) label, he’s a solid addition to the offensive line. His signing in Philadelphia will be disappointing to the Broncos, who were hoping to re-sign him.

Harris has played his entire four-year career with the Broncos, starting 34 games in the last three years.

UPDATE:  A league source tells PFT that it’s a one-year deal for the veteran minimum, plus a $50,000 bonus.

This is getting ridiculous. I was really hoping the Vikings would sign Harris. From now on, the Eagles should be referred to as the Soon-to-be Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles.

  12. buckbrennan says: Aug 2, 2011 6:59 PM

Green Bay won it all last year its true, however the last 5 years the winner of the superbowl has gone on to either miss the playoffs the following year or lose in the divisional round of the playoffs and now they have a target on them just as big as the eagles so it wont be as easy for them

  13. phillyfan4ever says: Aug 2, 2011 6:59 PM

Smartest Team this offseason, they had a plan and are executing it flawlessly, i’m sorry if everyone thinks their “buying” a superbowl but they havn’t played 1 game yet so Chill OUT!

  14. nfl25 says: Aug 2, 2011 7:00 PM

The eagles have not over paid for one player. They found good pickups that didn’t costs a lot. They never overspend on anyone and they never give up picks. That is why they are able to do this.

No matter how many fans said they were idiots when Roy was available, they passed. They didn’t trade a 1st 3rd and 5th round pick for Roy Williams and give him a ton of money. If you have a good head coach, never overpay and always find ways to get more draft picks, you will always be in a good position.

  15. onebadace says: Aug 2, 2011 7:00 PM

Yes, except as a starter, Vince Young has an admirable record. Hence a solid backup plan if Vick goes down.

Great player when he’s healthy, Denver’s running game improved quite dramatically once he got back on the field just after mid-season last year. But the biggest phrase in there is “when healthy” he’s had trouble staying on the field, playing only 18 of 32 games.

I really would like to see the Eagles cap numbers, one would think based on the franchise contract to Vick and the big contract to Nnamdi that they must be getting close to the limit.

  21. melonnhead says: Aug 2, 2011 7:05 PM

  22. jacksaysfu says: Aug 2, 2011 7:06 PM

Don’t know much about him, but he’s gotta be an upgrade over Justice and Dunlap.

  23. nfldaddy says: Aug 2, 2011 7:07 PM

First of all, you peeps need to stop with the Packers nonsense. Why does everyone forget that they couldn’t even win their division against the weak ass Bears? Yeah I know, I know….They have Jermichael Finley and Ryan Grant back. Great. I put them behind the Eagles, Saints, and Falcons in the NFC (in no particular order).

Secondly, Vince Young will be a stud for the Eagles. How quickly you all forget that Andy Reid turned AJ Feeley into a winner, then suckered Miami with a 2nd round pick. You really think the Eagles are gonna let Vince go after next year? Here is the deal…Vick gets hurt, Young is a stud, the Eagles franchise him next year and trade him to another sucker team for a high value pick.

The Iggles are doing this year the exact opposite of what they have done so far in the Andy Reid era. Sign 30somethings to lang big $$ deals. They need to win it this year and seem to be poised to do just that. They have probably structered most of their contracts to take the big hits in 2013 when a new TV contract is negotiated and the cap should rise dramatically. I, being a Cowboy fan< despise Philly, but they have to be the SB favorites.

Does anyone really think Mark Sanchez is better then Vince Young because I dont. Mark Sanchez has lead the Jets to 2 straight AFC title Games. So even if Vick did get hurt I dont see any reason why Vince Young couldnt step in and do just as good a job or better then Mark Sanchez has done with the Jets.

    NOPE!

-Ronnie Brown and VY signed one year deals.

-”Jenkins’ contract could essentially turn into a one-year, $4 million deal if the Eagles decide to let him go after the 2011 season.” (Not sure but I believe Babin’s deal is similar).

-DRC is still playing under his rookie contract

-The only big money deal went to Nnamdi, and they got him at a good price.

  31. jordan52187 says: Aug 2, 2011 7:16 PM

considering while signing all these players to 1 year deals or 5 year deals that can still turn in to 1 year deals i think the eagles front office are pretty smart about it. no one is past their prime, except maybe ronnie brown but its nit like hes expected to start. on top of all that they have still managed to get about 4 drafts picks for the 2012 draft as well. i think banner roseman and reid are doing a pretty good job this offseason

not when he is the best cb in the league. i’m sure if your team had signed him for that much you would not have had a problem.

  36. The Shoeman says: Aug 2, 2011 7:17 PM

    per ESPN/NFL:

it appears players are willing to take less in order to sign with the Eagles,

who are loading up for a Super Bowl run.
    ******************************************************************

Which seems to be the case …
It looks now, any available F.A.’s first choice is Philly.

It’s a surprising signing because Harris is only 25 years old, well regarded as a top right tackle and likely thought he’d get a long-term deal once the market opened. But this week’s market clearly isn’t last week’s market, and it appears players are willing to take less in order to sign with the Eagles, who are loading up for a Super Bowl run.

  37. macjacmccoy says: Aug 2, 2011 7:19 PM

atwater thats the the thing Vicks cap hit $15m but if the Eagles extend him that could be cut in half. Going into this offseason the Eagles were at the top of league in cap space and if you look at the deals they made they werent for that much of a cap hit.

You take 15 away from Kolb give 12 to Asomugha n 2.5 to DMC so they break even there. You take 4 from Bunkley and give that to Jenkins they break even there. 1m to Brown 5 to Babin 4 to Young but then you take away all the money they saved by letting their entire free agency class walk.

The difference between the cap hit they took from the players they brought in and the players they let go isnt that much. Add in the fact that they had so much cap space to begin with and thats why the Eagles have been able to make all the moves that they’ve made and still come in under the cap with room left to get Desean’s deal done by also extending Vick.

  40. hebro42 says: Aug 2, 2011 7:21 PM

First of all, The Panthers essentially gave Charles Johnson more money than all of the Eagles’ signings combined. None of these have been “break-the-bank” moves.

Secondly, Though I have my problems with Vince Young, he is 30-17 as a starter so on average he goes 10-6 for a season (purely based on math). While I would expect him to win 10 games, he has a better chance of winning than losing so a 6-10 prediction is purely based on someone being a hater.

They arnt buying a superbowl more than any other team. Especially considering teams must spend atleast 95% of the cap under new CBA. So I would say it’s more that the Eagles are appealing to players more than other teams. Sure they’re getting high profiled players, but it’s all at a manageable limit that they can work with further down the road.

Its hilarious how people are saying the eagles are trying to buy a superbowl…EVERYONE HAS THE SAME CAP!! Its not our fault that the Giants were like 11 million over the cap and Dallas was like 16million over. The Eagles FO knew there was going to be a lockout and that this would be an offseason like no other. They had needs and went out and filled them…they didnt overpay anybody…players want to come here.

And for the Jets fans…all I heard for a week was how SICK Revis and Nnamdi were going to be.

Every fan of every other team would love if there team had the ability to do what the eagles are doing.

Before the two signings today (Brown and Harris) the Eagles were 4.5M under the cap. This includes the extra 3M “cap relief” added for this year.

The Eagles will probably re-do Vick’s franchise tag to a longer deal. This will give them more room to do an extension for Desean Jackson.

It is every team’s intent to win the SB, but some teams attempt it by signing as many high-profile FA players out there (such as Washington). How did it turn out for the 4skins?

You don’t win anything in FA except the title of “dream team”. There are no SB champs on paper. The press has bought it, the Fans have bought it. The anal-ysts have bought it. Can the Eagles bring it? If they can’t, they are just as bad as the 4ksins – trying to win it all by signing big-name guys and making a huge splash and spending lots of cash in FA.

The Eagles have made their moves, now can they win it all? Time will tell, but the history has shown (and I can recall many Eagle fans saying the same thing about the Cowboys) that you cannot buy a championship. You have to earn it.

If the Eagles earn it, I will be the first to congratulate them, but I am saying it right here and right now, it takes a perfect storm, and in the words of Dennis Green – “if you want to crown them, then crown their asses.”

When December, January or February comes around, I could be saying (also in the words of Dennis Green) “they are who we thought they were”

    Which will it be?

Melonhead when was the last the Cowboys won a playoff game again?

    ————————————————————–

After the 2009 season. 34-14 against the Eagles. Desean Jackson had 3 catches for 14 yards.

  80. melonnhead says: Aug 2, 2011 8:31 PM

Yeah you know, Nhamdi never played against anyone named Vincent Jackson, Malcom Floyd, Antonio Gates, Brandon Marshall, Dwayne Bowe, or any of the other countless receivers in the AFC AND the NFC that are better than those guys you just named.

    —————————————————————–

Countless? Hey, just because you have to take your shoes of to count past 10, don’t assume that everybody has to.

  81. melonnhead says: Aug 2, 2011 8:32 PM

But the Eagles can walk away after 1 year and only lose this years salary.

    ————————————————————–

    That’s true of any player.

  82. melonnhead says: Aug 2, 2011 8:34 PM

Eagles aren’t buying a championship (this isn’t baseball), they are just out managing everyone else in the NFL. Hate Philly all you want, but their front office is the best in the NFL.

    ————————————————————-

You don’t get trophies for that. Obviously.

  83. toonsterwu says: Aug 2, 2011 8:35 PM

This seems like an odd fit, in all honesty. The Eagles under Andy Reid have always liked the big, physical guys. Ryan Harris is a solid OT, but an undersized guy who is physically maxed out (not going to get bigger), and a better fit for a zone blocking scheme.

  84. vikescry1 says: Aug 2, 2011 8:43 PM

as a packers fan the eagles have gotten better thats for sure. but last time i checked what was the team that won the superbowl becuz they went crazy in free agency? and if you do beat the pack or just win the superbowl good for you, BUT UNTIL THEN IF YOU WANT TO BE THE MAN YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE MAN! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! NATURE BOY RICK FLAIR! WOOOO! we have our championship, and it’s not on paper….

  85. shanehockey28 says: Aug 2, 2011 8:45 PM

No doubt the Sheagles will be tough but i love all these Philly fans claiming they have it all won already especially saying they are going to kick the Cowboy’s rear.. The boys have beathen them 3 out of 4 the last few seasons including 3 in one season. Money cant buy everything, Vick was the same ol Vick by the end of last season. VY is a joke and quit on his own team. Go ahead Philly faithful think you have it all won before the season starts.

  86. shanehockey28 says: Aug 2, 2011 8:47 PM

Not to mention they have all of this money cause they refuse to keep and take care of their own players. Prior to this year their GM as a joke, a cheap *ss and now all of a sudden he is the best out there. Any team can go all in if they have the money.

  87. relly142 says: Aug 2, 2011 8:53 PM

Melon head…you would have loved Nnamdi on the cowboys at 17 Million a year. Dont hate that he’s on the eagles for 12 Million.

Cowboys Payroll at the end of last year $136 Million

    Eagles $80 Million

Result…Eagles last second loss to the eventual SB winner in the playoffs

Dallas – nothing to speak of really

My favorite line is “Cant coach em, Poach em” Yes because Andy Reid didnt change Mike Vicks whole career, thats right, he didnt have the best year of his career by far. Oh and the birds didnt coach up McNabb, Kolb, and Feeley and just flat out rob teams for draft picks.

Yes, Trent Cole wasnt a 6th round pick, oh and they didnt draft Lito sheppard (cowboy killa!), Sheldon Brown, Brian Westbrook and Michael Lewis in the same draft. They didnt make Trotter a pro bowler…there are countless other examples..Shady, DJax, maclin, Herremans, Jackson, Hanson, Mikell, Staley.

Come on man..dont be ignorant. The Cowboys have had some good picks as well…but they’ve also had some terrible ones too.

  88. relly142 says: Aug 2, 2011 8:57 PM

jsrdc…every team is going to spend the same amount of cash…well just about, I think the limit is 89% of the cap and 99% for the league combined. the only differenc eis the eagles dont have to cut half their team before they can start spending cash

It’s a surprising signing because Harris is only 25 years old, well regarded as a top right tackle

    ——————————————————————–

hahaha what? he’s only started 34 out of a possible 64 games! And he’s 26. Nice research!

One year contract for a player that made SI’s All-Pro team his last full year. Are you going to disappear and change names when THIS season’s over as well, Julian?

  90. gcsuk says: Aug 2, 2011 9:08 PM

Did any of you Philly fans (and that includes bandwagon jumpers) think that maybe it’s not the team the rest of us hate so much, but just the arrogant @sswipe fans? Granted there are a few objective and mature Philly fans that can talk football like an adult. But the bulk of what I read on these posts is below the maturity level of a Beavis and Butthead re-run. THAT’S why people will be happy if/when Philly crashes and burns.

Philly’s whole attitude (as a town) just makes me sick. I’m from Chicago, and watching the Broad Street bully Chris Pronger take game-winning pucks off the ice after Blackhawk wins in the Stanley Cup Finals just so the Hawks couldn’t have them was pathetic. ” Wah. We didn’t win so I’m gonna take the puck. Wah”

The whole attitude in the town makes me want to retch. You can keep all your scumbag players in every sport. Enjoy your off-season championship. And no, I am not jealous in the least, and I mean that.

Nice factual and logical comeback kid.

I get it, I really do.

No I wouldn’t have. Seriously. That would have just been off-the-charts retarded.

As for Reid “changing Vick’s whole career”… great in the regular season, tanked in the playoffs. Same old Vick. He’s getting $15 million this season. Actually he’s getting $300,000 and his creditors are getting the rest but I digress.

    one more thing, nfldaddy…

“Stop it, seriously. Go play Madden 11 or something and dream about how your NFC East WR’s are going to be able to hang with Nnamdi one day.”

They don’t have to hang with Nnamdi. Nnamdi has to hang with them. Unless you’re playing him on offense in Madden, anyway.

  96. independenttrucks says: Aug 2, 2011 10:17 PM

@ melonnhead (who is really vox veritas)

If the Cowboys are really as good as your copy and paste Google research sessions would have us believe, why did you disappear after about week two of last season just to reappear with a new user name lately?

You have been responding to just about every other post on the Eagles threads that you are trolling but not the ones that call you out the new name bait-and-switch, so I’m really not expecting a reply, just pointing out how lame you are.

  97. terrellblowens says: Aug 2, 2011 10:20 PM

Everyone saying the Eagles are buying a championship is ignorant. They have just as much money to spend as anyone else They have not overpaid anyone. They are mostly to 1 year deals or long term deals with pretty much a team option. So they won’t be in “salary cap hell.” The Eagles are among the best at managing the cap. They also have a stable coach and a pretty balanced core of homegrown talent and players that were coached up to having success in Philly. Now they added some free agents to the team. I’m a little nervous that the high expectations for them are so high that anything other than a Super Bowl win will be seen as failure, but I like their aggressiveness. They have a very good chance at competing for the trophy this year.

One thing I will say is that the Asante Samuel for Patrick Willis rumors are absolute nonsense. There is no way the 49ers will trade probably the best LB in the game in his prime for a 30 year old corner. I love Asante but those who believe in this trade are grossly overestimating his trade value

  98. greengob1in says: Aug 2, 2011 10:39 PM

    @suckitphilly
My bad, i forgot the Eagles had to rest their starters when they played the Cowboys the 2nd time and then only lost by 1. The fact that you brought up that game is a fail cause it reminded me of how sad the Cowgirls were last season

  99. jsrdc says: Aug 2, 2011 10:45 PM

    chrisvegas,

Let me know when the Front Office can “outmanage” an effective way to a Lombardi Trophy. Then I will congratulate you. Until then, the Eagles have to EARN a SB victory by playing 16 regular season games, winning every playoff game, and then beating the AFC Champ for the honor. 1 in 32 teams do that.

Why is it that certain Eagle fans say it is only the Redskins or Cowboys that can attempt to “buy a championship” but also according to Eagle fans, the Front office is “outmanaging” the other teams? Just because you have more $ to spend doesn’t mean you are outmanaging anybody. Landing FA’s doesn’t mean S**T until you back it up with your play by winning games.

I will believe Philly will win the SB when I see it, and that means it has to translate on the field during the regular season, and in the SB. Prove it is the mantra, and that goes for any team looking to win it all, but since Philly is anointed as the “dream team”, all the pressure and expectations are squarely on their shoulders. Let’s see how they handle it.

  100. nfldaddy says: Aug 2, 2011 11:23 PM

Why would I care to engage in substantive conversation with you, Mr. Hyperbole? Why do you say that I’m a fraud, anyway? I have made no representations about myself.

You have clearly misrepresented yourself as a Cowboys fan who knows what he is talking about, therefore, you’re a fraud.

  101. packerbacker12 says: Aug 2, 2011 11:31 PM

“Yeah I know, I know….They have Jermichael Finley and Ryan Grant back. Great. I put them behind the Eagles, Saints, and Falcons in the NFC (in no particular order).”

It’s pretty hard saying a team isn’t that good when that same thing rolled through Philadelphia not once but twice last season and pounded Atlanta in the playoffs.

So basically your analogy is pretty much out the window.

  102. flyeaglesfly13 says: Aug 3, 2011 3:28 AM

Doesn’t matter if u love em or hate em, either way everyone wants to talk about em this year which means they’re obviously doin something right. And like McDonald’s, I’m lovin it

    @greengob1in

Apology accepted. I am sure you will think a bit harder before you type out your disinformation next time.

Here’s hoping the Eagles and ‘Boys meet in the playoffs again, and that the outcome is the same as the last time they met in the playoffs.
