Jets sign David Harris, $29.5 million guaranteed

David Harris AP

Jets linebacker David Harris has signed a contract extension that gives him the biggest guarantee for an inside linebacker in NFL history.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that Harris signed a four-year, $36 million deal, with $29.5 million of that guaranteed.

Harris signing an extension to stay with the Jets had been expected, although the guaranteed money is an eye-opener.

The 27-year-old Harris was the Jets’ second-round draft pick in 2007 and has emerged as one of their defensive leaders. He started all 16 games each of the last two years.

He’s high character, never in trouble, and has been extremely consistent since he came in the league. The Jets must be 99% sure Harris will not do anything stupid with that guarantee.

  10. jpmelon says: Aug 2, 2011 6:53 PM

I guess it makes sense since he’s played in a superbowl and a pro-bowler…..oh wait, he hasn’t accomplished anything? I guess it doesn’t make sense.

  17. waldoampere says: Aug 2, 2011 6:59 PM

Good. He’s the most underrated LB in the league and, outside of Revis, the most important Jets player on defense. He’s a Curtis Martin type guy in that he’s soft spoken and doesn’t command (or get) attention which is unusual because he’s in NY. If you watch him play consistently it’s apparent that he makes the Jets defense go.

  21. bukes111 says: Aug 2, 2011 7:06 PM

They were destined to overpay for him after they franchised him. The great part of the deal is that franchise tender offer had a cap figure of 10 MM while the cap number of the first year of the new contract is 4.6 MM.

  22. winninitall says: Aug 2, 2011 7:08 PM

This is a true NFL player and David Harris deserves this contract. He was D rookie of the year and had played out his rookie contract. When others held out and complain last year David Harris sat back and took the word of the organization that they will take cAre of him. He is a no namer to some because he shuts up and goes to work. The main reason behind the high gurentee is because it reduces the salary cap. Maybe Osi/ Samuel could be on there way.

  23. jetsarestacked says: Aug 2, 2011 7:10 PM

most underrated middle linebacker in the NFL behind bart scott. all you haters dont know squat.

  24. brooklyntay says: Aug 2, 2011 7:10 PM

There is always plenty of jet hate on this site but harris is worth what he was paid. He is the 5th 0r 6th best ILB in the game. He tackles and plays the run great and he is decent in zone coverage and is a pretty good pass rusher for a ILB in a 3-4 and blows up guards in the run game. With that being said the gtd money was a little high but he is a top 6 ILB in the league so the contract as a whole was fair.

  25. nfldaddy says: Aug 2, 2011 7:11 PM

@jmad….Yeah because the Jets are champions. They aren’t even the champions of their own city. Same old Jets…

Harris is so important to the jets D so glad they did this move. With this the jets are setup for the next 3-4 years. They now have Harris Revis Cromartie Holmes Mangold Ferguson Greene and Sanchez all locked up for the next few years. All good young solid core players. Tannenbaum is the man and the he has said hes not done making moves yet this offseason. We love you Mr T. Guys the jets are going nowhere anytime soon. Sorry!

  52. green41563 says: Aug 2, 2011 8:13 PM

See, this is where the quality of Tannenbaum as a GM comes shining through, even if the people here are a little too dim or ravenously biased to appreciate it.

In the last 10 days, the Jets have handed out three contracts of $8M or more per season: Santonio Holmes; Harris; and Cromartie. Now here’s the thing about those contracts: overpaid, underpaid, or what have you, all three players are only 27 years old, and all three contracts are relatively SHORT. Cromartie and Harris got 4-year deals, whereas Santonio got a 5-year deal. Thus, all three deals will expire when the players are about 31-32 and just as their skills are likely to diminish. That way, the Jets will have the kind of flexibility to maneuver that you don’t get when you’re stuck with long, lucrative contracts for players who are no longer worth the contract price because they’ve gone downhill.

For example, when you take Nnamdi Asomugha, a 30-year-old corner, and give him a 5-year deal, you’re really screwing yourself long term because in two years, you’re going to be stuck with a huge cap number for a guy who is no longer worth the contract price. And you won’t be able to get rid of him without a major cap hit.

  53. hoite says: Aug 2, 2011 8:16 PM

I hope the Jets fall flat on their face this year. Rex needs to shut his mouth and quit trying to buy a super bowl championship.

  57. dsigrey says: Aug 2, 2011 8:26 PM

Way to Rex, load the top end of the team so you can’t afford second string players and are forced to cut the likes of Danny Woodhead. Hope none of those guys have injuries cause their backups wouldn’t make 25 of the other teams rosters. You better hope these guys perform for at least 3/4 of their contracts, cause find cap room to signing new guys is going to be tricky. Sure Holmes’s cap hit is light this year but everything goes up, cut him in three years and take that cap hit will hurt.

  58. aggressivexpansion says: Aug 2, 2011 8:27 PM

Whoever thinks the Jets overpaid.. you don’t know a thing about football. David Harris is one of the best ILBs in the NFL, look up the man’s stats and see for yourself, he is the second best player on the Jets defense behind Revis and was voted team MVP last season not to mention making the NFL all pro team in 2009. In signing Harris to this deal, they increase their cap space this season, his Franchise tag costed the jets 10 mil in cap space and he will be earning 6 this year under the new deal so the jets just acquired 4 million more dollars worth of cap space. Great deal for the Jets, and anyone who thinks otherwise is moronic.

Worth every single penny, everyone who is hating I guarantee you base all your top players on stats alone. Stats are only cool in madden guys. Seriously though he is great for our team, great against the run, great as a blitzer and he’s good in pass coverage. He’s never been in any trouble and just shows up to work everday and does nothing but be one of the most consistent and most important parts of one of the top defenses in the league. He was the team MVP last year. So everyone outside of #jetsnation thinks its stupid, I think i speak for Jets fans when i see we are estatic by the signing and we’re happy to keep such a great player and one of our guys.

First for the jets fans saying the Eagles haven’t won a superbowl. Umm yeah but they did win an NFL championship 8 year before you won the superbowl and was the ONLY team to beat Lambardi’s Packers in the playoffs. But yeah anyway.

David Harris is a GREAT linebacker and the only bad thing about this deal is Harris gets hurt. He will be a great player through out the deal and its really not that much money just a lot on GRT. He will still be paid less than some other guys at his position and some of which he is better than.

I think we will see more deals like this one in the future. Less years Less total money more GRT money.

I know just looking over the Eagles deals this year a lot of them are done this way. Really the only draw back is injury. But even with that with the deals being shorter deals it works well. Good job Jets on rewarding a good Lunch pail player who doesn’t get near enough credit. Maybe the Jets can do the smart thing now and re-sign Edwards because if you think Plax is going to put up numbers like his your crazy. And Holmes is by far and away the most overrated WR in th eleague. The guy will struggle to put 1000 yards up this season if he even does. Also take care of my boy Wilkerson up there he is a beast one of the players that made Temple even watchable.

  74. suorangefootball says: Aug 3, 2011 1:29 AM

All you has been high school players should step back and recognize the greatness of Davis Harris. Who is 2nd in the NFL over the last 4 years to Patrick Willis with 428 tackles. He had 127 tackles TWICE in his first 4 years. He also has 14.5 sacks which is high for a MLB and on top of that, he is a pure nasty on the field. 29.5 is a bargain and he is going to be a jet until he isn’t in the NFL. Oh and all of you idiots who buy into the notion the Jets buy their teams because they get a few high profile guys. 9 of 11 starters on offense are home grown. On Defense its 7 of 11. Thats 16 of 22 starters (over 70%!) home grown from the draft. Go look at the Bears and tell me what you see. There are less than 5 teams who have more home grown starters on their squad. I know the facts hurt but they are the facts. Still, until the Jets get home field through out and a dominate offense, they might stay in the top five without hitting # 1

“Harris is essentially the Ray Lewis of Rex Ryan’s defense, cleaning up ball carriers while fellow inside ‘backer Bart Scott splits double teams and blows up blocking schemes. Thus, Harris has 99 or more tackles in each of his first four seasons. Though they missed out on Nnamdi Asomugha, the Jets have done exceptionally well to lock up their young talent before the season. Harris, Santonio Holmes, and Antonio Cromartie are all 27 years old and now under control through at least their age-30 seasons.”

Not sure who wrote it but they hit the nail on the head. And I don’t think it was Rosenthal because I’m pretty sure he’s a slimy Patriots fan.
