Joey Harrington is retired from the NFL and enjoying life back home in Oregon by doing things like going out for a pleasant bike ride. But he had a ride on Sunday night that wasn’t so pleasant.
Harrington has been hospitalized since Sunday night with a broken collarbone, a punctured lung and a laceration on his head after an SUV hit his bike. He is expected to be released today.
The driver of the SUV, Derek Johnston, got a ticket for following too closely.
Harrington was the third pick of the 2002 NFL draft and started for the Lions from 2002 to 2005. He was the Dolphins’ starter for most of 2006 and the Falcons’ starter for most of 2007. He spent 2008 on the Saints but never got in a game and has been out of the NFL since.

Get well soon Joey!
hope he recovers well and has no problems from healing.
that sucks. but as an amateur bike racer i know people who have had similar injuries….extremely painful but heals quickly.
I think this goes down as a sack.
that is hilarious
When I first heard of this it was phrased, “former NFL QB hit riding bike.” I was hoping it would be Jamarcus Russell, but I quickly realized he wouldn’t be doing anything considered to be exercise.
Get better, Joey. I always thought you could have been more if you’d gotten better development.

C’mon now, Russell couldn’t even hit a stationary bike, much less a riding one.
That sucks mightily, but this is a blog about pro football players, of which Joey Harrington is not one.
The driver only got a ticket for following too close? Really?
get well soon joey.
By the picture i hope you and your brother get the cornelia marie back into the money making business.
As has been stated, this is probably the first time Joey’s been hit from behind where Jeff Backus wasn’t blamed.
Seriously, my hopes and prayers go out to him for a quick recovery.
That is really going to affect his piano playing.
Was the driver Matt Millen?
Harrington said it still didn’t hurt nearly as much as playing for the Lions.
Damn I was going to draft him first in my fantasy league. Guess I’ll just go with Akili Smith.

Ya Think!!!!!!!!!!!
In Oregon you must maintain a distance of at least 1/4″ between your vehicle and the head, collar bone, and lungs of the cyclist in front of you.
This guy has always had a knack for getting hit.
On a more serious note, best wishes Joey Ballgame
Would you say that he has a “BUST”-ed collarbone?
….sorry….
In France it is a felony for driving within one meter of a cyclist. In the US you get a pat on the back for hitting and almost killing a cyclist.
If he’d have spent as much time learning to read NFL defenses as he did playing piano and having pleasant bike rides, he might’ve been worth something after the Lions drafted him.
lawsuit.
Great guy. Met him a few years back, was more than happy to take a few minutes to talk and sign an autograph. Get well soon!
Oh lord, not another run-a-way SUV. We need to pass a law bout SUV’s running around without a driver. Those SUV’s, u cant stop’em, u can only hope to contain them. They are always running over people on sidewalks, now there after has-been QB’s. When will this SUV terror stop.
Darn! I had July 31st in the “Joey Harrington Death Pool”…
Get well soon!!!!
Guy got a ticket for following too close when first attendees to the accident scene observed the SUV “right on top of” Harrington.
When he was with the Lions, he got clobbered so often that it seems like getting smacked by an SUV would be nothing.
I’m guessing the driver was Dre Bly, who then blamed Harrington for getting hit.
Seriously, I was bicycling in Thailand when I got hit by a truck. When I saw that it was a Toyota, naturally I thought of Johnny Yune. “Once I got hit by a Toyota. Oh what a feeling.”
