Redskins’ popularity wanes as losing continues

NFL Owners Meet To Discuss Status Of Contract Negotiations Getty Images

Washington Redskins fans are showing their displeasure with the team’s losing ways by staying home.

Last month the Redskins admitted that demand for tickets was down, and with training camp now open, far fewer fans than usual are showing up to watch practice.

The Associated Press reported that Monday’s practice may have had the lowest attendance ever in the 10 years the team has been training at its facility in Ashburn, Virginia. Tight end Chris Cooley, who’s in his eighth training camp with the team, said the number of fans in camp isn’t even close to what it used to be.

It is probably a fifth of what I’ve seen on a normal day,” Cooley said.

Part of the issue may not be specific to the Redskins: The lockout may have turned off fans, or just made it harder for them to plan ahead for a trip to training camp. But some of it is specific to the Redskins, and particularly owner Dan Snyder. Longtime Redskins fan Justin Caballero told the Associated Press Snyder is the reason fans are turned off.

“I know some who have gotten rid of their tickets,” Caballero said. “The owner — that’s the biggest one I get, they don’t like the owner. And they don’t want to give him no more money.”

The Redskins claim their fan support is still strong.

“The Redskins are just as popular. We remain a global franchise,” spokesman Tony Wyllie said. “TV ratings were up 12 percent last year, merchandise sales were up, and we are on target to extend our sellout streak. Everyone is affected by what has happened recently, but we still remain popular as one of the most storied franchises in the NFL.”

But Cooley acknowledged that the fans are turned off by the Redskins’ lack of success.

“It’s frustrating to hear a negative side of the fan towards this team,” Cooley said. “I’ve been fortunate that I’ve always had so many people support me, but it’s hard to listen to the radio and have anyone dog us. No one likes that. It all comes down to winning.”

Or maybe it’s the fact that the last 2+ weeks in this area have been extremely hot…who wants to sit out in that crap to watch guys stretch?

NFL organizations win from the top down. No two ways about it.

Perennial contenders like Pitts, Balt, Indy, NE, etc. are almost always drafting last – yet still find a way to ‘re-load’ and have the coaches and systems to keep it rolling.

Yes, they also have outstanding QB’s, but the teams that are always drafting in the top 10 – have had an even greater opportunity to find and develop great players – but they don’t.

Washington is simply a FUBAR organization, beginning with the owner – that keeps compounding it’s mistakes by throwing millions at over-the-hill, ‘name’ players and coaches – instead of having the ability to develop their own.

Love the roster. Love the new lower key approach to free agency overdrive. Agree that The Owner is the focus of a general bad vibe, esp. b/c the FedEx Field game day experience is so poor compared to what Ted Leonsis does for DC hockey fans. FedEx food service is bored, slow and food overpriced. Not a water fountain in the whole place. Bad place to take kids b/c the language from the fans gets pretty salty and mean. Still, love the team and the roster and the actual games are still fun to watch.

Been to camp 3 times. Less and less people. Get rid of the owner, and start winning games. If we win games, shows will stop dogging on us and we will start being thought of as competition. We need to perform Inception on Danny’s brain so we can get him the hell out of Washington..

The skins are still popular, Dan Snyder is not. Additionally, it’s hot as balls here in NOVA. Summers around here are no joke and this was the hottest July in recorded history for the area. People think we’re full of it…How can DC be that hot in the mid-Atlantic?

The place is built on a freaking swamp, you can squeeze water out of the damn air.

PLUS, most of us are just waiting for Rex Grossman to ride in and sweep us off our feet.

  29. eaglesfootballfan says: Aug 2, 2011 11:49 AM

  37. routerunner says: Aug 2, 2011 11:55 AM

lack of success and a dink for an owner are the only reasons. it’s not the heat (it’s always hot there this time of year) and it’s not the lockout (fans are back in full force).

  38. Stupid Raiders Fan says: Aug 2, 2011 11:55 AM

Stadium is not that old but it’s pretty bad for NFL standards. Plus it’s a b___ to get to from anywhere in DC. The Roster has about 6 really good players and then a bunch of turkeys.

Oh and the owner is suing a columnist for making him look bad.

    No wonder.

  39. tundey says: Aug 2, 2011 11:56 AM

Oh also if you wanna know how popular the Redskins remain, just pay attention as all these companies jostle to be associated with the team. The WashingtonPost has 90% of their sports reporters covering the team, all the local tv network affiliates have Redskin-themed shows (that presumably get lots of viewership since they keep creating more and more of them).

I now see how hard it is to break the losing cycle…all those years that I laughed at Saints, Falcons, and Patroits fans I now know the feeling and I hate it.

Every team goes through cycles, but they shouldn’t last a decade…

  46. skinsfan1981 says: Aug 2, 2011 12:02 PM

Yeah, it took 12 years for Danny to wake up and realize he cant buy championships (like the Eagles are now trying to do). This team has been gutted, dropped 3 years in overall age, and now has an infusion of youth and speed at some important skills positions. Not enough to get us out of 4th in the division this year but it’s a solid start from where we were 18 months ago with cerrato and zorn. Let’s hope that continues.

  47. grandpoopah says: Aug 2, 2011 12:02 PM

  49. stinkfist5 says: Aug 2, 2011 12:03 PM

I’m a Ravens fan, and I do not pay attention to the Skins at all. But it is a total shame that this area has to deal with two of the richest, yet worst owners in all of sports. Ted Leonsis/Steve Bisciotti need to buy the O’s and Skins, doubt that is possible though.

  51. trickbunny says: Aug 2, 2011 12:04 PM

With Dan Snyder, I wouldn’t be surprised if you had to pay tolls on the way to practice, pay to park at practice (more $$$ depending on the size of vehicle), pay to walk to the practice field from your car, pay to stand behind a fence and watch, pay $9 for a 10 oz bottle of water, pay to get back in your car, and pay double tolls on the road out of practice.

  52. httr73 says: Aug 2, 2011 12:05 PM

The Skins are an easy target and deservedly so. However, I do feel change is coming. Not because I’m drinking to kool-aid but because things are different. In the past we would draft high profile players at exactly the point point where their productivity was starting to fade. The big names would bring big hype and with that, big expectations. This year we bring in a number of younger guys who appear on their way up (Josh Wilson, etc…). Most of the “experts” think we did some good things this offseason but say there is no way we will be very successful with our current QB situation. I agree. However, if we come out of this season having improved in a number of areas but loose a number of games due to poor QB play, then I can’t help but to be excited given that the top 3 QBs in next year’s draft are all better than any QB taken this year.

  53. iminyrhead says: Aug 2, 2011 12:10 PM

I have been a Redskins fan for 30yrs. After the initial “honeymoon” period where Dan Snyder generated excitement by going after EVERY big free agent and making EVERY soon to be Hall of Famer even richer with his generous contracts (Dieon, Bruce Smith).

Dan Snyder treats this team as if it were a box of trading cards … Cut your losses Snyder and sell the team. One Jery Jones is enough, we dont need a “wanna be” JJ ……

  54. p01ntman says: Aug 2, 2011 12:11 PM

@iminyrhead: If you’ve been a fan f0r 30 years, you ought to know by now that Snyder will never sell the team. Why? Because as much as he is an owner, he’s also a fan. That’s the good and bad thing about him. It’s good because it makes him open up his wallet and sign FAs…even overpay to get the ones he wants. Bad thing because most of the FAs he’s seduced by are worthless. At least most *have been* worthless.

No, I’d say it is specific to the Redskins.

I live in MD and I have several friends who grew up loving the skins but have switched to different teams. After the long 10+ years of losing, I know several people who have dropped the skins for the Ravens. One guy I know dropped them and now lives for the steelers. I asked him why, he said he is sick of Snyder’s losing ways.

There are a lot of options around here to go watch games. Skins & Ravens in MD, Philly is 2 1/2 hours away, NYG/NYJ is four, Pittsburg is 5. Lots of fans of all those teams in my town. When you have those options and your team is a perennial loser for over a decade, that is what turns your fans off.

The local fan base out here in DC are morons. Any other city the fans would be long gone with an owner like this, but DC fans confuse “loyalty” with “stupidity”. I’ve lived all over the US, and I’ve never seen more delusional fans. Every year Skins fans think they are turning the corner. Every year they are going to content. They refuse to accept the truth…that this team will suck for as long as Snyder owns it, and he’ll own it for another 40 years. Gt that through your skulls Skins fans, you won’t sniff another championship for 4 decades, at least. This isn’t your old Joe Gibbs Skins, not anymore.

2nd year of a rebuild? Hardly. Shanahan has NEVER built a successful team. He won 2 super bowls with a pre-built team, and that’s great…Reeves couldn’t do that. But he needed to go to a team ready to win, because he proved in Denver he is clueless how to build his own. And if he does suck enough this year to get Luck, he’ll ruin him. Name me a QB Shanny developed. Ever. He went through enough in enver you should be able to name a really good one. Nope, didn’t think so.

This team isn’t rebuilding, they are still tearing down. Enjoy.

Dan Snyder’s arrogance and greed have compromised the team’s on-field performance and set it back several seasons. He’s priced out the blue-collar, true fans for the wine-and-cheese crowd. He’s put making money the number-one goal over winning. He’s made the game-day experience a poor one. Most importantly, he’s thumbed his nose up at the fans and done such customer-unfriendly things as sue grandmothers, put up restrictions on where one can walk to get to the stadium, and charge outrageous prices, In the process, he’s opened a HUGE chasm between the organization and the very thing that made it the envy of many other teams in the league — THE FANS! No one wants to see the Skins return to Super Bowl glory more than I do. But, just his very presence reminds me of what he and his flunkee, Vinny Cerrato, did to the Skins to put them in this current mess. When I see him on camera, I see a less-than-sincere person, especially when he talks about how he “feels sorry for the fans.” He’s destroyed my football team and I can no longer support it financially when I’m basically putting money into his pocket.

Wow! Nice original comeback! There was that one championship in 1960, prior to them calling it the Super Bowl. So I guess that makes it ONE, uno, 1. Or do you prescribe to some self-imposed expiration date of relevance that negates that from counting, which your franchise would surely be approaching as well?

It’s a shame you haven’t felt the excitement about an upcoming in such a long time, as Eagles fans have for the last 12 years straight.

  78. skinsdiehard says: Aug 2, 2011 12:55 PM

So many of the folks on here are reliving things from 2000. The only mistake Snyder made was hiring Vinny Cerrato. Now that he is past him, the team is getting better. Snyder never operated like a GM if you do your homework. Also, before Snyder, the Skins had no chance to attract free agents (check the 90’s). I would rather be an attractive spot for free agents than not. Not all of the FA were over-the-hill….Marcus Washington, Shawn Springs, Laveraneus Coles, London Fletcher, Philip Daniels, Cornelius Griffin, Ryan Clark, Randy Thomas, Andre Carter, Randle El, Santana Moss, Jammal Brown, DeAngelo Hall… All of these players and more played well.

  80. polishrod says: Aug 2, 2011 12:56 PM

The best part about the NFL is that every year there are about 10-20 teams that can realistically win it all.

The Redskins keep ending up in the bottom half of the league because they don’t perform from start to finish, just in spurts.

To me, that says they have the talent and players but are most likely failing between the head coach and “head” front-office decision maker. Cerrato and Snyder really F*ed up the Skins for years, mostly because they were egotistical and refused to admit their mistakes.

Guys like Belicheck (Randy Moss) and Reid (TO) are successful because they know when they’ve made mistakes and when it’s time to move on.

  81. megadethgod says: Aug 2, 2011 12:57 PM

I havent seen any big name free agents sign with the team this year. I also see that that got rid of two major distractions in Mcnabb and Haynesworth. Lastly they had more draft choices then they have had in more than 20 years.
As a long time fan I too am sick of the loosing, but I am optimistic.

  82. Deb says: Aug 2, 2011 12:58 PM

Redskins fans had high expectations of Shanahan and were encouraged when Snyder promised to let him run the team without interference. No one expected last season’s drama and dysfunction. You can’t blame the fans for being fed up.

REDSKINS: The last of the original NFL teams to have a black player. Now they are blessed with the first coach to lose his mind while on active duty. Shanahan and his son really deserve each and Snyder deserves them both.

The NFL is a QB league and the Skins don’t have anything close to a starter on past evidence. They are comfortably the worst team in their division.

Can you blame fans for seeing a dreadful losing season ahead of them?

I’m a Dallas fan (living in the DC area). A lot of my friends are Skins fans, and while we joke and kid about whose team sucks more, in reality I feel sorry for Skins fans having to endure miserableness and mediocrity in their team.

While I think Snyder genuinely wants to win, I think he is going about it in all the wrong ways. I cannot think of anything he has done to legitimately interest fans, and bring them closer to the team they love. Instead, I can think of several things he has done that have accomplished quite the opposite:

-suing ~125 season ticket holders who literally were unemployed, forcing several to go bankrupt.
Yet, at the same time, they were toting 200,000 people waiting for season tickets.

-artificially inflating demand, and therefore ticket prices by in actuality selling unsold season tickets to secondary markets (stub hub type places).

    – banning all signs at fedex field bc you know they are going to make fun of you

    – alienate all of the neighbors around the stadium, preventing them from even driving home during game times bc it alters “stadium traffic”.

Leadership starts at the top, and while he has done an excellent job at raising the value of the Skins franchise, he has done a horrible job of remembering that the people who follow the team are the ones who ultimately determine the value of the team. Until he starts reaching out in earnest to the fans to determine what/how he can do things to improve their experiences, the way Ted Leonsis has done with the Caps/Wizards, this team will continue to gradually alienate its fans. Without public support, this team severely hampers any chance for long term success.

  94. jacksaysfu says: Aug 2, 2011 1:26 PM

Because skin fans know their team is trash. They talk superbowls? How many division titles do you have this MILLENIUM? Your team is irrelevent and has been for a LONG time. So hold on to those 20 .year old memories, cause it will be atleast another 20 before this joke of a squad even comes close. Enjoy ANOTHER last place finish!

“Why is it considerd excellent moves by Philadelphia to go out and try to buy a SB? But when Washington tried it,They were stupid moves?”

i’ll tell you why. Because one is adding pieces to an already good team to fill holes, while the other is giving ridiculous contracts to name free agents at positions where they weren’t needed, then having to cut them or trade them for a bag of footballs the next year.

Since Andy Reid has been coach of the Eagles, they have made the playoffs 9 out of 12 years, reached the NFCG 5 times, come within 3 points of a SB win. They have by and large drafted well especially in mid-t0-late rounds and have managed the salary cap brilliantly.

During that time, The Redskins have made the playoffs how many times? How many losing seasons have they had? How many times have they thrown silly money at FAs only to have to cut them or trade them for nothing the next year?

One of the best organizations in sports, vs. one of the worst.

  96. andyb053 says: Aug 2, 2011 1:35 PM

It’s ok, Skins fans. Andrew Luck and the other 4 picks they have in the first 4 rounds next year will help rebuild the team. It’s just not going to happen overnight.

  97. redskins1964 says: Aug 2, 2011 1:45 PM

So if Andy Reid why all I hear up there if the Eagles don’t win a SuperBowl he is gone why did they not give him a new contract yet I use to live in Philly and they talk about is getting him out of there because not winning the big game. The “Redskins” are living up to their namesakes. Native Americans had the whole continent to themselves for thousands of years and never developed anything: No math, no written language, no science, no advancement at all. They never even used the wheel. They never advanced their civilization and culture at all. They had all the resources to be great, but advanced nowhere.

The NFL Redskins are the same: Great fanbase, smart owner, plenty of money… In other words, they have all the resources to be great, but advanced nowhere.

But I will watch them and cry with them until they recover – if they ever do in my lifetime.

  100. Deb says: Aug 2, 2011 2:10 PM

    @Grulks …

Excellent post. Wasn’t aware of those issues–Snyder is an even worse owner than I thought. What makes it doubly sad is that Jack Kent Cooke was one of the best owners in the NFL. It’s a shame his son wasn’t able to keep the team in the family instead of losing out to Snyder.

  101. stocker1 says: Aug 2, 2011 2:12 PM

  102. sophiethegreatdane says: Aug 2, 2011 2:14 PM

The heat has nothing to do with it. It’s just as hot in Baltimore and Ravens fans are clamoring to attend a practice since they had to move training camp away from the usual practice location in Westminster. Last year, they drew 100,000+ plus fans in oppressive August heat.

Snyder is slowly killing the Redskins.

I love that they keep trotting out the tired old line about the “sellout streak”. It may be, technically, a sellout, but go to a Skins game and check out the empty seats.

Anyone wanna guess why the team ripped 10,000 seats out of the stadium this past off season? So much for that thirty year wait list for season tix.

  103. therealsmiley says: Aug 2, 2011 2:18 PM

I love when someone says they’re not a Redskin fan anymore…you were never a Redskin fan!! We don’t want bandwagon fans and we don’t care if you like the name or not! The team is not moving and Dan Snyder is not selling the team. He is first and foremost a Redskin fan, grew up one and always will be one. And…good teams come and go in the NFL…look how long it took the Patriots to be a really good team. Our storied franchise has been in pro football for almost 80 years and we’re not going anywhere. We’ll be back….Hail!

    @dirtydrynn27 …

I’m not a fan of any team in this division and have no ax to grind here. But the Eagles are making rational free agent moves toward building a championship team. Asomugha is young and at the top of his game, and they didn’t overpay for him. On the flip of that, Snyder paid big money to guys like Bruce Smith in the twilight of their careers.

Rather than fitting a missing piece to the puzzle, Snyder has persistently brought in a hodgepodge of name players and flung them together with no discernible strategy. It’s been frustrating to watch because the NFC East has traditionally been one of the most exciting divisions in football, and he’s nullified one of the fiercest competitors.

  106. theravenlives2 says: Aug 2, 2011 2:34 PM

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++f++

So this is the new excuse de jour for the whine-and-cheeze Foreskins fans. I don’t know about all that stuff (see, I support a REAL team), but I do know one thing…..

On Saturday, in that same Mid-Atlantic heat, the Ravens will open up M&T for an inter-squad scrimmage, and they’ll have 40,000 fans there.

    Psst…hey Dan, it’s free!

  107. rubicon202 says: Aug 2, 2011 2:53 PM

  109. macjacmccoy says: Aug 2, 2011 3:49 PM

Its like they dont realize the only reason their sales attendance etc. went up last year was bc they traded for a division rivals 6 time probowl qb in Mcnabb. last year at this time Redskins fans were all claiming super bowl and went out and bought up tickets and merchandise and such. By the time they realized how horrible the team was it was to late they already bought what they bought.

Its just another example of Redskins propaganda just like their 100 year long waiting list or however long they claim it to be. They take 1 fact of a given situation and trumpet it and ignore everything else that makes it untrue.

  110. 1historian says: Aug 2, 2011 3:51 PM

The skins used to be a classy team and their battles with Dallas back in the 80s were epic. Unfortunately both of those teams are presently owned by ego-maniacs who don’t understand the three principles essential to every winning professional sports organization.

    1) Hire the right guy.
    2) Get the hell out of the way.
    3) Sign the checks.

  111. skinsrollyou says: Aug 2, 2011 4:01 PM

lack of success and a dink for an owner are the only reasons. it’s not the heat (it’s always hot there this time of year) and it’s not the lockout (fans are back in full force).

It always hot, THERE? as in, a place you are not at, or do not live at? what the fluck do you know about the heat here, right now. We break 100 degrees several times a week. When you walk outside, the heat sucks all the air out of you. What do you know you dumb dick?

  112. redskins1964 says: Aug 2, 2011 4:02 PM

One thing about Dan the redskins have not raised ticket prices in 6 years and don’t have to pay a PSL I have been to other stadium and the price was more. You have to know this area is one of the riches in the country so prices won’t be like some place were time are bad. things go in cycles all you fake just leave

  113. steelcity09 says: Aug 2, 2011 4:19 PM

The lockout did not cause fans to abandon this team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you seen thier free agent additions this year??

As a matter of fact, look at their personnel decisions from the past decade. Redskins better get some good scouts in their organization.

PS– I think Shanahan has lost his mind too. Maybe they can pick up some more below average WR’s and RB’s. Just laughable at this point.

I’ve been a Skins fan since ’82 in good and bad times, it’s called loyalty. I’ve been over to DC to watch games at Fed Ex and go to see United who have that moron Glazer as an owner, I support the team, not the owner or coach !!! We are in rebulding mode and will come good but I won’t be on here badmouthing fans from other teams that are struggling because as fans we all have to endure the ups and downs. BTW I have Navajo blood in my veins and don’t find the Redskin name at all insulting.

I agree that the fan experience at FedEx is pretty bad compared to other places I’ve seen games like the Linc. in Phily and the Ravens stadium(whatever it is currently called). The worst part is having to be surrounded by opposing teams fans(or empty seats). Remember MNF a couple years back when about 25,000 Steelers fans showed up? Its so embarrassing that thousands of seats were removed in the offseason. Last year I had extras for the Tampa game(yeah, the one were they couldn’t make the extra point to force OT) and literally could not give the tix away! Dan’s not going anywhere tho and neither are true Redskins fans.

  119. slickzmoney says: Aug 2, 2011 7:37 PM

One more thing- Dan Snyder gets alot of bad press but the hands down worst owner in the beltway area is the Orioles Peter Angelos. He has taken a proud franchise in a baseball town with a great new ballpark and turned it into a perennial joke. 14 straight losing seasons and counting with the place looking like a ghost town unless NY or Boston is in town bringing their fans with them. At least Dan is young and is trying.

    ++++++++++

I am not kidding when I say I love the roster. The O line is returning save for an upgrade at the weakest link. Continuity breeds chemistry breeds results. Rex Grossman will Unleash the Dragon. John “John Beck” Beck is a 4 year vet with two years in the system … and was forced into rookie service in Miami after they were already 0-4. Malcolm Kelly is finally healthy and hasn’t dropped one yet in camp. Shanahan RBs are like 8-track tapes. Just pop one in.
