Steelers wideout Emmanuel Sanders out three weeks

Super Bowl XLV Getty Images

A popular breakout pick for 2011, Steelers wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders will miss most of August.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Sanders will be out three weeks following complications after two foot surgeries this offseason.  Sanders sat out the start of training camp, but it was believed to be precautionary.

Instead, we’ve learned Sanders didn’t recover as expected from surgery on his heel.  Sanders took an injection in his left foot that took bone marrow from his heel to speed healing process.  That doesn’t sound good.

Pittsburgh’s interest in Plaxico Burress makes more sense now.  Hines Ward isn’t yet back on the field and Sanders had surgery on each of his feet during the offseason.  (One in February, one in April.)

Still, the Steelers have decent depth with Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown able to take starter snaps for now.  When everyone is healthy, Sanders was expected to challenge Ward for No. 2 duties behind Wallace.

Wonder how ready he’ll be for the start of the season then if he will miss most of training camp.

Limas Sweed this is your last chance to earn a roster spot. Also keep and eye out on rookie free agent Terrence McCrae out of Ohio#11. 6-3 194 and runs a 4.4. If given the opportunity I think he will turn some heads.

LOL… it made sense then, too. Anyway, you can add Limas Sweed to the mix. His chances are dwindling but the jury is still out.

Sanders can’t put weight on the foot yet, but the good news is that his big toe now acts as an opposable thumb, and has what looks like it may become an eye growing in the middle of it.

Steelers have enough depth to tide them over.
They started last year without Roethlisberger for 4 games and went 3-1/

Either braylon edwards or limas sweed breakout year!

  20. ed1952 says: Aug 2, 2011 12:19 PM

Moss? There’s a reason why no team offered him a contract. Sanders will be back before the season even starts…and if not we have plenty of depth.

  21. 3octaveFart says: Aug 2, 2011 12:24 PM

    Moss? No way.
    The Steelers wouldn’t have him.

Besides, didn’t he just retire quit?

  22. dickroy says: Aug 2, 2011 12:34 PM

I must admit I have just about given up on Limas sweed. I think unless he really comes out and shows he can play and stay healthy he should be gone very early in the cuts. We do have depth at wide receiver.
As for Moss, he is only good when he wants to be, not when the team needs him to be. We will be fine. Sanders should be back anyway.

  23. Deb says: Aug 2, 2011 12:48 PM

Moss? So at the crucial moment against the Ravens he can decide he just doesn’t feel like completeing the play? What he did to the Vikings last year was inexcusable. No team should ever trust him again … and it appears no team will.

Sweed is a terrific route-runner, which is the more difficult part of receiving. If he can overcome his mental blocks, he’d be a great receiver. If not, let’s hope three weeks means three weeks and not six or eight.

    Randy: “Yo”

Mike Tomlin: “Wanna get that ring before you check out?”

    Randy: “Damn Straight”

Mike Tomlin:”Get up here and join our men on this mission Randy, we have some work to accomplish”.

Randy: “Coming up 79 Coach, see ya this afternoon”.

Mike Tomlin: “The NY Foot Fetish guy said Revis will own you”

    Randy: “See you before lunch”

    Mike: “What number you want”

Randy: “Don’t mattter, see you before lunch”

  30. steelcitystud says: Aug 2, 2011 1:31 PM

We don’t need Braylon….we have Limas. He’s cheaper and can drop the ball just as quickly!

  31. dickroy says: Aug 2, 2011 1:31 PM

Mike Tomlin: “Good Randy, we sure need another playmaker”.

Randy: “No prob man. I’ll give you every other down:.

Moss and Ben’s style of play don’t matchup. I can see it now…”Ben, breaks free from a sack, buys some extra time, looking deep for Moss as he’s jogging the end of his route”.
