The Bears should still be looking for offensive line help

Chicago Bears Training Camp Getty Images

The Bears poked around the offensive line free agent market over the last week without acquiring any tackles.

They have moved J’Marcus Webb to left tackle and rookie Gabe Carimi has reportedly looked like he belongs at right tackle.  They are also trying to replace Olin Kreutz at center, where they say new pickup Chris Spencer will have to earn a starting job.

Yes, the Bears offensive line remains a big concern.

Yes, it sounds like they are still looking for help.

“I think we would all like to have a couple more veteran linemen,” Martz said Tuesday, before noting that every team might feel the same way.

Not every team has as many questions as the Bears.  Chicago seems unlikely to add a starter at this point, but they should keep an eye for possible options to improve their depth.

Perhaps Mike Tice count entice his old buddy Bryant McKinnie to stay in the NFC North.

Cutler took 9 sacks in a game, and they still don’t have the o-line solved?

  2. thephantomstranger says: Aug 2, 2011 5:55 PM

I don’t see how the Bears can feel confident in their offense with so many changes on the O-line. I don’t think signing Mount McKinnie is the answer. Sounds like a 7-9 season to me.

    Collective groan from Bears nation.

    welcome to Chicago McKinnie

  7. jerryangelomakesmewanttojumpoffabridge says: Aug 2, 2011 6:05 PM

I’d take McKinnie if the price is right…
The only good news about the Bears Oline is that they appear to have several guys that can play multiple spots on the line–making depth at each spot less important. Even so, there Oline is going to be unproven and likely make many of the same mistakes as last year…

    Possible line up?
    LT Webb/Mckinnie
    LG Carimi/Williams
    C Garza/Spencer
    RG Williams/Garza
    RT McKinnie/Webb

mike tice? keep him away from overweight, out-of-shape offensive linemen!! cripes, he already killed one.

For being in the NFCCG they sure are a mess. I think the Bears can still be in that 9-11 win area based on starters but where is the depth and it seems like they are doing a poor job of cultivating young talent.

In comparison raves are coming out of GB about Cobb and the rookie TE’s. Also Newhouse has looked so good at LT that Sherrod will probably start at LG.. meanwhile the Bears continue to shop at goodwill looking for able bodies.

  14. terrellblowens says: Aug 2, 2011 6:16 PM

Eagles and Bears could get in a bidding war over an average tackle, since RT is the only real need for the Eagles’ offense

  15. lrt79 says: Aug 2, 2011 6:19 PM

One major problem needed to be addressed. Just one. And they addressed it with a rookie, a bum from Seattle, and by ditching the best player on the offensive line.

The Bears defense has gotten mightier, so they’ll be bailing out the offense again. As the NFCCG and 06 SB proved, a team needs more than a mighty defense to win it all.

The Bears’ offensive line looks great to us.

LOL…i love all these idiotic Lions fans and fans from around the league that continue to give the Bears no respect! Keep it up…keep underestimating them right to the Super Bowl! Even with a below average line last year they still managed to make it to the NFC Championship game…can’t wait for all the “Its luck”…”they have an easy schedule” excuses coming up this season when they’re good again! Ha…lions fans actually pretending there team will be good…lolololololololololol

I think they should be able to sign McKinnie. I don’t think he wants to be owned by Julius Peppers again.

If you want some OL help, we would gladly take a 7th round pick in 2020 for Winston Justice.

  31. originalsmasher says: Aug 2, 2011 8:09 PM

The Bears need to stop hanging around the Cubs.
And it does not matter about the O-line. In fact, pick your fantasy line..Cutler is still a bum! Nothing is going to change that.

Hey Bears fans, we should take it easy on the Lions fans for talking so much garbage in the preseason.

This is the only time of the year when they get the chance to do so. When you’re the Lions, 0-0 is as good as it gets.

“HEY, I HAVE AN IDEA! LET’S TRADE GREG OLSON!” -Former Bears Offensive Coordinator Mike Martz

  37. toonsterwu says: Aug 2, 2011 8:40 PM

I don’t anticipate the Bears going after McKinnie unless the price is cheap. They reportedly didn’t push hard for Jammal Brown – only wanting him if he was cheap. Their OT plan seems to be to hope that Webb/Carimi work. Tice deserves some leeway with Webb, considering his solid coaching job last year.

The backup tackles would be something like Omiyale (if Webb falters), and maybe a Chris Williams. Omiyale, Williams, Spencer, Garza and three youngsters that Tice likes a bit (Louis, Asiata, Williams) will battle inside. My hunch is that they would pursue someone inside if the price was right. My guess is that they’ll wait and see how the Center situation works out first. Spencer may get first crack, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they shifted Roberto Garza inside. If there’s struggles, wouldn’t surprise me if they went out searching for another interior piece.

Provided Martz has a balanced game plan, I think Tice can coach up the OL guys enough to be an effective unit.

I’m not a fan of a team because Jay Cutler is a joke? Seriously? Cutler was overrated in college, he was overrated in Denver, and he is overrated in Chicago.

Your team will go nowhere with him. The only reason he is even still there is because your idiotic management gave up a king’s ransom for him.

Stop being bitter because your team doesn’t have good management like Philly or NE.

Bottom line is, the best Bears QB right now is the Head Coach of the SF 49’ers.
