Getty ImagesWhen Ryan Williams was drafted high in the second round this season by Arizona, there was some thought that Beanie Wells could be the odd man out in the Cardinals backfield.
Instead, last year’s starter Tim Hightower was dealt to Washington. Coach Ken Whisenhunt has made it clear that Wells, not Williams, will be the team’s starter.
“I think he’s ready to take that role. We’ll see,” Whisenhunt said Wednesday via Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com. Earlier this week, the coach said, “This is what he wanted. Clearly he’s the guy.”
Matt Leinart was the guy at quarterback at this time last year too, so Wells has to prove he’s worthy of the new role. The most important thing he can do in camp is maintain his current health.
“You’re not going to get many chances in this game, especially in this business,” Wells said. “You get labeled. Quickly. As I know.”

Buy stock in Ryan Williams.
Buy stock in Beanie Wells.
Bet he’s the best back in the league this year.
“I think he’s ready to take that role. We’ll see,” Whisenhunt said
Doesn’t sound very confident to me.
Good lichen Beanie this will be your only yr starting because Williams will take it from u for sure by next yr
I’m shorting Beanie Wells.
He. Will be. A bust. Quickly. As I know.
Beanie will have 1500 yards this year with 14 touchdowns. This will be a huge year for him. Much improved team. Not so one dimensional anymore.
It will be one of those gigs where Wells will start the season, but Williams will end up taking the job eventually. See Ryan Grant and James Starks.
Wells is solid and will start this year but Williams will show a lot of promise as the backup and be starter by next season.
Wow, based on this article, I would rather take Hightower than Wells in this years fantasy draft
Beanie waited 2 years for this, and now the team thinks he’s ready.
I think he’ll be a very good back for the Cardinals.
Give him carries and he’ll produce.
First….Whisenunt has been proven over and over again to lie to his players and the media. He is a liar.
Two, Beanie Wells stinks and is injury prone.
Three, they drafted Ryan Williams for a reason…….the “we’ll see” quote says it all. If WIlliams picks up the playbook quick and has a great preseason he will start. Something tells me if Beanie sees hes getting outplayed, he will get injured. Lol.
Coaches always tell the truth to the media, right?
