Lions land Nate Hughes on waivers

757591

The Lions added another body at receiver on Wednesday, claiming on waiver former Jaguars wideout Nate Hughes.

Hughes entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2008, and he was on the active roster in Jacksonville for eight games in 2009.

Hughes spent all of the 2010 season on injured reserve. He was waived by the Jags on August 1.

Unfortunately for Hughes, his biggest moment came when he dropped passes on consecutive plays in the end zone in a 31-17 loss to the Cardinals. One of the balls bounced off his facemask, Troy Williamson style.

Hughes was cut promptly after the game. (Ironically, we joked at the time that the Lions would be claiming him, given that they were claiming at the time pretty much every player who had been placed on waivers.) After clearing waivers, Hughes joined Jacksonville’s practice squad.

Later in the year, Hughes secured partial redemption via a 35-yard touchdown pass, which gave Jacksonville a 17-0 lead against Houston. The Jags held on to win the game, 23-18.

UPDATE: The Lions also claimed guard Greg Niland off waivers from the Cardinals.
