Rex Ryan wants Braylon Edwards, at the right price

The New York Jets haven’t closed the door on bringing back free agent wide receiver Braylon Edwards. They’ve just closed the door on paying him big money.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan said today that the Jets would gladly sign Edwards if Edwards were willing to play for the kind of contract the Jets are willing to offer.

“If Braylon wants to come back for what we want to pay, come on back, Braylon,” Ryan said.

Ryan didn’t say what the Jets want to pay, but it’s safe to say that the Jets and Edwards have a sharp difference of opinion on how much Edwards is worth.

Considering that we’ve heard very little about any interest in Edwards from other teams, it’s probably also safe to say that the Jets’ valuation of Edwards is closer to his real market value than Edwards would like to think.

Yeah, but are the Jets offering a new set of flatware?

  2. jbl429 says: Aug 3, 2011 3:20 PM

Poor Braylon, he’s gonna have to settle for $1MM. So sad.

I’m kinda surprised the Giants haven’t shown some interest. With Steve Smith still unsigned (and likely to start on the PUP list), and Plax not signing with them, they do have some room for him.

  3. touchdownroddywhite says: Aug 3, 2011 3:20 PM

That would be a great deal for the Jets, and would surely make Sanchez happy since he already stated he wants to keep his WR’s

  4. wyldsoul says: Aug 3, 2011 3:21 PM

The jets offered Braylon a hot dog (courtesy of Mark Sanchez), a can of stickum and a public defender.

  5. shaggytoodle says: Aug 3, 2011 3:21 PM

That could mean trouble for the Jets, because Ryan has a way of overpaying for things.

  24. semperfi24 says: Aug 3, 2011 3:35 PM

The translation is, we didnt want to pay you very much when free agency started, and no one else did either. then you had this stupid, I say again, stupid incident at a restaurant, and now there are even less teams interested in your services. So if you want to play, and since you arent getting paid by anyone, you might as well not get paid by the team you have been with for 2 years….

Will Braylon cave and come crawling back to Rex, or will he stick to his guns (or forks and knives) and try to sign somewhere else to prove a point?

  25. baldy55 says: Aug 3, 2011 3:36 PM

I’ll take Edwards back in a heartbeat. Kid played his a$$ off for us last year. Now is he a ding dong every now and then? Yes. But for a 1 or 2 year deal… DO IT!!!!

  33. ampats says: Aug 3, 2011 3:45 PM

Ron Borges ( one of the biggest A—— in Boston Sports) reported last week on 98.5 that Santonio Holmes told the NYJ before he signed his contract that the only way he would re-sign would be a guarantee that the Jets would not bring back Edwards. Supposedly, Holmes has no use for Edwards.

Any comments from Gang Green faithful about this report?

  34. blahblahblah333 says: Aug 3, 2011 3:46 PM

Bring Edwards back. Then you could have “Tone” supplyin the pot, Plax teaching the rooks how to properly carry handguns, and Bray can bring the entourage to help protect them all…wait some of the entourage just got arrested. my bad.

  35. RexCanCoach says: Aug 3, 2011 3:47 PM

No team is going to give Edwards a long term deal, he is just too volatile and his game has flaws.

Braylon, go back to NYJ and take the $1.5 mil for 1 yr. at least you know their system.

  36. marcus158 says: Aug 3, 2011 3:49 PM

Bad things happen to the Jets when Ryan opens his gob about F/A’s he wants.

    – He wanted Heap. Heap gives him the finger and goes to Arizona instead.
    – He wanted Asomungha. Asomungha gives him the finger too and goes to Philidelphia instead.
    – He wants Edwards back. Who wants to bet the Edwards gives him the finger and joins someone else?

  37. buckbrennan says: Aug 3, 2011 3:54 PM

I love how people talk about his drops when last year he had less drops than Wes Welker, Reggie Wayne, Tony Gonzalez, Andre Johnson…I could continue but I don’t think I need to..Oh and he had less drops than Santonio Holmes…but you guys are right he has the worst hands ever…

  38. andyreidisfat says: Aug 3, 2011 3:55 PM

Here’s something i don’t get. The jets have WR last year. All three are free agents this year. 2 of them have all kinds of a history of off the field One with the law and one with the cheeba the other one is a good person who is generally not in trouble.

The pot smoking WR is short and fast with good hands and runs ok routes. He has made one huge play in his career yet has never put up really great numbers in fact how many times has he caught for over a thousand yrds ?? maybe 1 time. How may times has he caught ten touchdowns in a season?? i don’t even think he did. The other trouble maker is a big tall kid who has some deep speed. His hands are not the best but he has produced. though not by much he out produced the other trouble maker last season and in seasons past the guy has had up 17 TD’s in a season and well over 1300 yrds and is fully able to do that again. The third WR the good one. Is never going to be a big time WR but he does a lil bit of everything. He pro bowl type specil teams guy a great 3rd down WR he’s always willing to do what the team needs of him and rarely complains.

Now if i told you the jets signed only one of these guys list them in order you think they were most likely signed.

    mine would be
    1. B. Smith
    2. B edwards
    3S. Holmes

But it is really the opposite. The jets gave 50 mil over 5 years to guy who is not really a true number one. He definetly was the most overhyped free agent this year. IAnd its not like they can say oh well Edwards has the off the field stuff. Holmes is one joint away from being suspened for a whole season. It probably would have made more sense to sign Edwards and Brad smith for half the money they paid Holmes they maybe they could have put that extra money into a pass rusher like Osi or another player.

I think sometimes you need cap geeks guys to make the right choices. The jets got caught in hype over how important Holmes is from the fans when they probably could have signed players who were cheaper and have a hirer production ceiling than holmes does without the off field stuff. I love the Jets Team and even as an Eagles fan I love Rex Ryan, though his brother being on dallas isnt much fun ( i am a big buddy ball guy ) But it think they hinder their whole team by signing one player to a deal that was way to much. D Jackson is most likely going to get a deal close to what Holmes got. Is their anyone who can objectively say those two are equal in what they bring to a offense. I’m sorry jets fans but if your objective you have to admit while Holmes is a nice complmentary WR he is not dictation coverages, Jackson is.

I can;t say a bad signing like this will keep this team from winnign because they do have great game day coaching and a top 10 defense so they should be a contender again. I just can’t help but think what they are if they resign Edwards and smith on the cheap and then take a Malcom Floyd or heck even a Randy moss on the cheap to go a long with Plax and then sign a Rush backer or trade for Osi how much better they could have been.

  39. btowngetsdown says: Aug 3, 2011 3:56 PM

Jets should try to grab him for a one year deal for a couple $ million. It will allow him to rehab his image (recent fight may have helped the Jets), and maybe stay on with the Jets long term at the end of the year if Plax stinks, or move on to another team with all the off the field issues behind him.

  40. kolb2fitz says: Aug 3, 2011 3:58 PM

he’ll be in Arizona by the end of the week, and he’ll be celebrating a division title in 4 months.

Shocking the world all over again

  41. 7to10for6allday says: Aug 3, 2011 4:00 PM

Braylon is a bum. He had one good year in Cleveland and he wants to be a diva now. Shut up and play Braylon, you suck anyway.

  43. ripcurl2121 says: Aug 3, 2011 4:04 PM

thats because other teams actually, ya know wanted those guys too. no one else wants edwards

  44. RexCanCoach says: Aug 3, 2011 4:08 PM

that is the first I am hearing about it. not sure why S. Holmes would care, Holmes was going to hit paydirt either way and Edwards is no threat to him or his game…?

  45. bhenryman says: Aug 3, 2011 4:11 PM

I would love to get edwards back but not at the money he wants, i really want the jets to make a run a malcom floyd!!!

  46. biggerballz says: Aug 3, 2011 4:13 PM

he’s a POS and should be paid like a POS

  47. 808raiderinparadise says: Aug 3, 2011 4:18 PM

I would pay Braylon Edwards for a 1yr in OAK. Just as a deep threat alone and red zone target I think he could catch 8 TD’s and 700-850 yards.
Then again I don’t thinl his attitude would fit with OAK players right now. I guess he will remain a jet, unless the rams throw him a deal he likes.

  48. djvicdogg says: Aug 3, 2011 4:21 PM

Rex said he would let him back on the team for a foot massage and a fu—n snack!

  49. hobartbaker says: Aug 3, 2011 4:25 PM

Bray On wanted a longer term deal than the Jets were offering. Edwards wanted a one year deal at least. Being hired by the week as a temp was hard on his ego.

  50. nflofficeadmin says: Aug 3, 2011 4:33 PM

Do you really think Coughlin would consider this guy? Coughlin would rather swallow a jar of nails before bringing this guy into the locker room.

I was suprised when I heard that. Borges is one of the most disliked reporters in this market but usually his sources are well placed.

  52. prestigew0rldwide says: Aug 3, 2011 4:44 PM

@buckbrennan…. thank you, very well said. Braylon works very hard on the field, made a lot of great blocks last year and clutch catches. As much as everyone wants to pi$$ on his character, he is a professional on the field and thats what matters. You never mention plax or holmes as flawed characters yet they have had worse runin’s with the law.. Considering plax has been out of the game they are crazy not to try and get him back… if they had holmes in the slot with plax and edwards out wide.. could work well for them

  53. steelerkiller52 says: Aug 3, 2011 4:49 PM

Still need someone to get them the ball. 3200 yards, 17 TDs, 13INT’s, and a hook up with a 17yr old is not going to cut it. This guy didn’t take the Jets to the AFC title game 2 yrs in a row…Rex’s D did.

  54. nahcouldntbethat says: Aug 3, 2011 5:27 PM

If the Jets bring back Edwards over Cotchery it will send all the wrong messages to the locker room. With Santonio Holmes. Plaxico Burress and Braylon Edwards in the room the responsibility index will be zero. Good luck winning a Super Bowl with 3 WR’s who can’t stay out of trouble.

Cotchery is the guy who should be #3 on this team. He balances off the issues with #1 and #2 and he’s a really good receiver also.

Getting rid of guys who sacrifice for the team in favor of prima donnas who don’t know the meaning of the word sacrifice is asking for a 9-7 disaster and the beginning of the Sanchez bust watch.

  55. mezter says: Aug 3, 2011 5:40 PM

He’s visiting SF now. So we’ll see what happens. He may just need the right coaching, and Harbaugh may have what it takes to pull the best out of Braylon. Just my opinion.

  56. jetsarestacked says: Aug 3, 2011 6:23 PM

plex and braylon wide with tone in the slot? oh yeah, and dustin keller? that would be fun to watch, especially when the jets got in the red zone. they have to bring braylon back.

he was the best player on offense last year. he was a homerun threat, went in the middle and wasnt afraid to get popped, great run blocker, and he only had ONE drop.

holmes didn’t play the first four games last season. take another look at your stats and take that into account.also, he was clutch. if you watched any games you couldn’t doubt that. his ‘one big catch’ before the jets wasn’t one catch; it was typical.

  63. grumpy1209 says: Aug 4, 2011 6:33 AM

How dumb are some of you people, Jets trying to buy a SB. Every team out there is doing the same thing, the Jets are making better decision and signing better players. So tried of you Jets haters! We might not have made the SB as Rex has promised but we have shown we are a team to be reckoned with.

How do you “try to buy a superbowl” in the NFL? Doesn’t every team have the same cap amount?
