The Eagles can’t stop signing players

Minnesota Vikings v New Orleans Saints Getty Images

There will come a day this year when the Eagles don’t make a free agent signing.  This is not that day.

The Eagles agreed to terms with former Saints defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove, according to Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.  They also grabbed former Panthers and Jaguars defensive tackle Derek Landri, according to Aaron Wilson of Scout.com.

At this point, the Eagles are grabbing useful depth that will not even be guaranteed to make the roster.  Or they are just making moves out of habit, not wanting this insane run of pickups end.

do they plan to field of team of free agents? because at this pace, that’s all that will be left.

  4. ICDogg says: Aug 3, 2011 6:33 PM

The Eagles had only 2 DT’s practicing today after Laws had hip flexor, Patterson had seizure, and Abiamiri went down with some other injury. (not counting Jenkins who can’t practice until tomorrow afternoon)

Some of these players they are signing will have to be cut. There’s no way all of them, makes the team.

  9. brooks07 says: Aug 3, 2011 6:37 PM

  11. rabidmike says: Aug 3, 2011 6:38 PM

Got to love them. Gleefully, heading towards most annoying team in America. Too bad they have to play the season or the could have this thing wrapped up before the Pack make it to the White House.

  12. kscogg says: Aug 3, 2011 6:38 PM

yeah that dream team crap worked out pretty well for the Miami Heat didn’t it? sure hope the eagles put on some sort of pep rally and talk about winnin it all…….only to be stomped in the big one.

  14. majorseahawk says: Aug 3, 2011 6:39 PM

    ICDogg

Dream team, or team dreaming? How about actually winning it first. Having said that, the Eagles have been impressive picking up players. Hargrove is a solid pickup. Landri is a scrub. But until it translates to wins and a SB trophy, you are scaring nobody.

  16. melonnhead says: Aug 3, 2011 6:42 PM

If all this doesn’t end up with a Super Bowl trophy after this season the Eagles will have redefined the phrase “epic failure”. Andy Reid’s going to either drop 100 pounds or gain 100 pounds this season.

Can we please get a recap of what the Eagles team will look like once this whole free agency time period is over? I feel like I don’t even know who’s on or off the team anymore.

  19. 7to10for6allday says: Aug 3, 2011 6:51 PM

Lol keep hating haters. Yall just mad your team isn’t getting any talent. Tweet your GM and tell them to wake up before they get run over

  20. aclassyguyfromaclassytown says: Aug 3, 2011 6:52 PM

And can we stop with the Heat referances already? Basket ball is made up of 5 guys per team on the floor at one time, all of them having to play both offens and defense. The “Big 3″ in Miami help their own stupid free agent summit to decide where to all go play together. The Heat weren’t that good before they became what they are now. As for the Eagles, they signed a few big names to start, and then a bunch of decent players, but mostly as backups on one year deals. They were a good team last year, except on defense, and now that’s addressed, but still isn’t guaranteed to be great. The only people declaring the Eagles as the beszt team out there right now are Vince Young, who shouldn’t have opened his mouth about that in the first place, and the national media because they’re jealous of how many player the birds have signed.

  21. johnnyb14z3 says: Aug 3, 2011 6:53 PM

the eagles just look flat our desperate.

    just ask yourself:
    did the miami heat win?

    then think to yourself:
    will the eagles win?

    -_-

  22. n0hopeleft says: Aug 3, 2011 6:57 PM

Wow. The missing link. Now they are the official Superbowl champs of August on paper.

And also the official choke artists of the century.

The Eagles have officially become the most talked about team to never win a Superbowl.

    Your franchise is awesome.

  23. dragonfly99 says: Aug 3, 2011 6:59 PM

So much for the theory of developing your own players and coaching them up. This makes it a lot easier on Andy Reid and the eagle’s coaching staff. Maybe they can buy themselves a championship.

  25. phillychzstk2012 says: Aug 3, 2011 7:04 PM

Is it really a suprise that the Eagles actually may want to win?

The rosters are set to 90 players, why not load up on talent and then cut the players who just arent “good enough”. Sorry the Eagles have a strategy and would prefer to have competition in camp instead of handing players a spot. Make them work for it and prove themselves worthy.

Extremely intelligent if you ask me.

  26. NoPayneNoGain51 says: Aug 3, 2011 7:05 PM

Andy Reid will be fired after this season. Cowher will be the NEXT BIG PHILLY SIGNING.

  27. emoser says: Aug 3, 2011 7:09 PM

I’m so sick of all these “haven’t proven anything yet,” “doesn’t mean anything until you’re on the field,” etc comments. Yes. You’re right. And in other news, the sky is blue and the ocean is wet. But I don’t see any of these people predicting a Raiders superbowl victory on the grounds that nothing in the offseason matters.

  28. brooks07 says: Aug 3, 2011 7:11 PM

Are all these signings directly related to Andy Reid’s future in Philly? He’s been there forever. Always a bridesmaid in the playoffs. Is this his warning that if (when) they don’t win this year with this “dream team”, he’s outta there?

  29. iamthorny says: Aug 3, 2011 7:11 PM

Does anything scream “We can’t draft to save our lives” more than this?

Clearly, they’ve wrested this title away from the Redskins organization.

I guess Lurie didn’t have the heart to fire Andy Reid so he set him up with a paper champion to make that task more palatable.

  32. kingtrukr says: Aug 3, 2011 7:15 PM

Hey, I say more power to them. If they win, maybe my worthless non free agent signing Browns will get off their butts next year and do something. You guys will be cutting all pros while we’re signing UDFA’s from the U of Phoenix online college as starters. I’m sure the Browns are waiting in the wings to scoop up all of the garbage that Philly cuts this year. Any chance of accepting Heckert back in exchange for Reid? Yeah, I didn’t think so…

  33. cesquire says: Aug 3, 2011 7:17 PM

They have 17 defensive backs, 13 wide receivers, 5 tight ends, and 8 running backs on their roster right now. They can only have one practice a day in pads. How do they plan on evaluating all these guys?

  34. ICDogg says: Aug 3, 2011 7:17 PM

Most of the guys the Eagles signed – these included – are not major acquisitions. When I said “Super bowl” above I was being a little sarcastic.

Some of the names like Vince Young and Ronnie Brown are clearly backups who just happen to have famous names.

Asomugha, and Rodgers-Cromartie are solid acquisitions, though they probably have to deal Asante Samuel now. And I think Jenkins can be exactly what they need if he can stay healthy. Babin is a pretty good player but nothing all that special.

The Eagles obviously hated their defense last season, having gutted the coaching staff and half the starters. But the offense is pretty much the same as it has been but for an O-lineman or two.

  35. janvanflac says: Aug 3, 2011 7:17 PM

Their coach certainly isn’t buying into the hype, and neither are the players unless you take into consideration that many FAs are willing to take LESS MONEY to play for a winning organization. That’s right, Dallas fans, good players don’t care about the trophies collecting dust….they want to sign with a team they think can win, and won’t have a different head coach every year.

Will they win the SB this year? More likely than not they wont, but they are all but a lock to make the postseason (no matter who is at QB) which is definitely not the case for the other crappy teams in the NFC east.

  36. 3octaveFart says: Aug 3, 2011 7:18 PM

It is weird. Is picking up free agents (when you have the money) is illegal? Why is everyone complaining?

    Eagles can’t draft anything…

…but QBs. You’ve got to hand it to Reid. The guy can draft and coach QBs. They get lots of extra picks to blow it on too.

They have done pretty good with WRs too. Jackson, Maclin and Avant…all homegrown.

    FS and S…homegrown too.

    Right now our LBs…all homegrown.

We used free agency to get better CBs than the stud we had in Asante? Blame us for getting RDC on a trade and picking up the CB that everyone wanted?

Now we use free agency to rebuild the OL and DL. Why? We have a new OL Coach and DL Coach…surprise? No.

The Cowturd fans are also failing, we just acquired like 20 free agents, a quarter of them are probowlers, and we still have more cap space than the turds. LOL

Funny, I thought the term “epic failure” was already defined by a guy who disappeared for almost a year due to his ‘Boys messing the bed last year, only to reappear under a different name. And who seems to spend all of his extensive free time reading and posting on every Eagles thread and bringing them up on other teams threads (Tebow). I’d say they are entrenched in your head.

Cowboys are OVER the cap. If they don’t win the superbowl they have a bigger “epic failure” than the Eagles who are still under.

By the way the Cowboys tried to sign…
    Kedric Golston
    Abram Elam

    Go Eagles

  58. rodericksilva says: Aug 3, 2011 7:56 PM

With these two signings the Eagles (currently) have around 11 new players from other teams. Some might not make the cut.

The Saints have 12 new players from other teams..buying a Superbowl?

The Cards have 9 new players…buying a Superbowl?

    Broncos…8

    Bears…7

These teams trying to build a Dream Team? Where are they getting all their money?
Do they have a different cap?
    They can’t coach their players?
    They can’t draft?

  96. everybodyhitswoohoo says: Aug 3, 2011 9:26 PM

And also, I love that the people saying that they’re buying a championship are also saying they can’t draft.

News flash, nimrods. Every team is allotted the same amount of money to spend on their team. It would be impossible for the Eagles or any team to make a big splash in free agency if they didn’t already have quality guys signed for cheap that they got either through the draft (read: the entire offense other than Vick, Schmitt, and Peters; Cole; the linebackers and safeties) or through low-risk free agent signings that pay off (read: Vick; Weaver and then Schmitt).

For all of the things that the Eagles have been bad at for the last decade, managing their money is not one of them and has never been one of them. Look at this offseason. Jenkins and Babin can basically be cut at any point in their contracts with basically zero financial consequence, and just about every other person signed has been for a one-year deal at a below-market price. And even Asomugha signed for less than he made last year and for less than other teams offered him.

This offseason isn’t a matter of a team not drafting well. It’s a team that managed its money well for years continuing to manage its money well by spending it on players at deals below their projected value. Calling it anything else is misinformed at best and just plain wrong at worst.

Yeah because there aren’t teams that sign 10-15 free agents every year….

Who else is going to have “chemistry”? All the teams have started practicing at the same time, and all the teams have either added or removed 10-15 guys from their team due to free agency, trades, or injuries.

Is Aaron Rodgers going to struggle too because he has to reestablish “chemistry” with formerly injured players Ryan Grant and Jermichael Finley?

Stop with the chemistry nonsense. It’s a joke. You’re bitter and scared because 1.) Whoever your team is, they didn’t do 1/4 of what this team has done in the off season. 2.) You don’t want your team to have to face this team.

Yes. I’m the idiot, when everyone else in the world is saying that signing several bargain contracts in a capped league is means of “buying a championship”.

There’s no way you can field a playoff team, lose only two players of importance to free agency (a safety and a kicker, at that), and still have a ton of money to spend in free agency WITHOUT having a ton of players already on your roster that aren’t making much money. After we signed Asomugha, Jenkins, and Babin, we still had the 5th youngest team in the NFL. That would not be possible if we weren’t pulling in good players through the draft.

But sure. Tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about, when our #2 offense last year was made up of one offseason free agent acquisition, one trade, one emergency mid-season fullback FA signing, and 8 draft picks. Please.

The point is all the bs bout what your team did before cell phones is as relevant as boxing is today. Its NFL history in a faster league thats all about what have you done for me lately. The Birds are the dominant NFC East team of the last decade and are a perennial contender for the NFC Championship. We need pieces to get over that losing the big game mentality now we have mostly new players who didnt lose those NFC championship games.. it brings all whole new dynamic to the coaches and the players we gots are gonna be hungry to win it all and not upchuk when it matters.

Why would Rodgers have to “reestablish” chemistry with those guys? Chemistry is built over time. So what if those guys were injured? They were still Packers, still with their teammates most every day. Why would injury disrupt chemistry?

Funny how you say that chemistry is a joke but it was a lack of chemistry that doomed the Eagles with TO. Those that don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. That’s paraphrased, credit to George Santayana.

True, but not all teams dip into the free agency well as deeply as the Eagles have, and that’s what this is really all about. They’re replacing a lot of their crappy home grown guys with guys that other teams developed. I mean a LOT. They could see as many as 6 or 7 new starters on defense alone if they can improve that crappy LB corps. Jenkins, Babin, Asomugha will definitely start, Samuel might be traded or demoted to nickel to make room for DRC to start. That’s four without even looking at safety or LB.

As a Redskins fan, I can’t see anything wrong with what the Eagles are doing. They aren’t going down Cerrato-Snyder route of destroying a team through reliance on free agency.

They are not overspending. They are not mortgaging their future by signing huge backloaded deals. They are paying market and below market prices and filling needs in their roster. They aren’t trading away draft picks, they are accumulating more. If the Redskins front office had been as well run as the Eagles over the past decade, I’d be very happy.

Also, never really seen the need to rag on other franchises in the East. Obviously I cannot stand the Cowboys, but when they’re not playing the ‘Skins I want the Eagles and Giants to win. There is nothing worse than losing to an NFC East rival, but I see it as a fraternity. I hope the Eagles do win this year. The ‘Skins are in no position to compete, and if we can’t win it I think Philly fans deserve the break.

Although the fact that an SB win would push up the price on renewing all those 1-year deals and dent the desire of those players looking for their first ring would be quite useful as well.

All that said, it doesn’t matter who has the best roster in August. Injuries can completely derail the prospects of even the deepest of rosters.

So…let me get this right. All the haters would have us not go for the best available FA at the positions we need, and not look for the best backup FA talent we can find. Just sit on our hands and not address the obvious issues of our defense that were exposed all last season. You haters make me laugh…If Andy had talent at the positions he’s signing he would just coach them up but because that’s lacking and it was know by every good offense, how to score on my birds, Andy is making, what I think is a damn good attempt at fixing those holes now, while the offense is still young and explosive. The real funny thing is that if it were any of your teams, you’d feel the way I do.

How many years does vick have left? Or better yet how many years does he have left playing the way he does? There is no one waiting in the wings being groomed as the next franchise qb. McCoy is an average back, nothing more. Jackson and Maclin are a good pair but Jackson wants to get paid, is smallish and easily injured….sounds like a diva. Brent Celek in under used and the o-line is average on their best day. The only seemingly bright spot is the defense which you trashed your returning defensive unit and retooled through FA. True your corner situation is set but the LBs aside from Babin are a joke. I don’t think anyone will be scared of your safeties or free safeties. This is the last chance for Vick and Andy Reid. Enjoy it, drink on it, beat someone up over it or whatever you eagles fans do because beyond this year you’re on shaky ground.

Anyone comparing the Eagles front office to Dan Snyder and the Redskins, is an idiot. The Eagles have a very well-run organization that always succeeds in the draft, and this year they’ve decided to use the cap room in free agency. The Redskins however, can’t draft at all and just blindly throw money around everywhere. You don’t see the Eagles giving a defensive tackle who can’t pass a conditioning test a $100 million contract.
