Braylon Edwards: I’m a 49er

Braylon Edwards AP

Braylon Edwards says he’s going to San Francisco to join the 49ers.

Edwards wrote on Twitter Thursday that the deal is done.

“It’s official #Team17 we have moved to the bay. I’m a proud member of the San Fransisco 49ers,” Edwards wrote.

Edwards is a talented but troubled player whose off-field issues never seem to end. Just today he had a P.R. firm release a statement on his behalf, denying reports that he was involved in a bar fight that saw two people get stabbed and two of Edwards’ cousins get arrested. Edwards is already on probation because of a drunk driving conviction.

In 2010 Edwards caught 53 passes for 904 yards and seven touchdowns. In San Francisco he’ll immediately become the team’s No. 1 receiver — if he can stay away from off-field trouble.

UPDATE: Adam Schefter reports that Edwards agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million contract, or $483,000 more than Plaxico Burress got for his one-year deal with the Jets.

not the kind of impact move we need to make the jump to the next level, but still a move in the right direction.

    Shoulda went Cotchery.

  7. deanvernonwormer says: Aug 4, 2011 7:21 PM

Braylon was a good Jet and I’m sorry to see him go. Edwards and Cotchery for Burress and Mason is definitely a DOWNGRADE. The Jets are worse today then they were following the AFC Championship game (that they threw away).

  13. semperfi24 says: Aug 4, 2011 7:23 PM

Lets recap the last week for the Jets. Nnamdi gave them the finger. Edwards gave them the finger. They gave the finger to Cotchery. They gave the finger to Ellis, who appears to be in New England today giving them the finger right back. I fail to see how the Jets think they are better than last year, or the year before….is it possible, that they peaked already? Buffalo went to 4 SB’s, but never won. Philly went to 4 straight NFCCG’s, only won 1, and lost the SB. The Jets have been to back to back AFCCG’s, failed to win both, and seem to be going backwards….

  14. ed1311 says: Aug 4, 2011 7:23 PM

He got paid less than sims-walker got paid at rams, glad to hear that actually .. the wr-diva-era of NFL is going to end soon!

  15. packersareandwillalwaysbebetterthanthebears says: Aug 4, 2011 7:24 PM

So a receiver who wasn’t wasn’t wanted by his team because he was a diva is pairing up with another receiver who dropped in the draft because he was called a diva…. This will be interesting.

Hopefully he is out of cousins

  23. kingdm8 says: Aug 4, 2011 7:26 PM

As a Cards fan, I was hoping we could get him in to pair with Fitzgerald. I think those two big targets would have been nice for Kolb in year one, with Chansi Stuckey playing in the slot. Now I guess our focus goes to Malcolm Floyd.

As far as Edwards being SF’s #1 WR, I’m sure Michael Crabtree would probably disagree with that. Having those two huge egos on the offense might end up biting Harbaugh in the tail. With Fitzgerald there wouldn’t have been the clash of “diva” attitudes. With Crabtree it could be a problem.

  24. hasselbeck8 says: Aug 4, 2011 7:28 PM

    “RT @fauxjohnmadden

    Hmm….

    Anyone have a guess? Because I don’t.

  26. canetic says: Aug 4, 2011 7:30 PM

  31. nyjetsman says: Aug 4, 2011 7:36 PM

He isnt worth the 3.5 million that he was demanding. I think 2 at most. Very incosistent…christ I even watched a ball bounce off his head. Sometimes his head was there and others I do believe it wqas at another game. We havent signed Mason yet which may mean we are making a run at Floyd. This could get very interesting. The Jets are not a worse team without braylon and jericho and Buress is a gamble give it time. Derrick Mason or Malcolm Floyd are huge upgrades. I as a Jet fan loved Braylon it is now his time to go. We need a RING not a DIVA.

  32. tiffpats4eva says: Aug 4, 2011 7:37 PM

  39. jaybird70 says: Aug 4, 2011 7:45 PM

  40. lasher1650 says: Aug 4, 2011 7:47 PM

Crabtree and Edwards – nice pair of WR’s, too bad they don’t have anyone that can get them the ball.

  41. sfwillis52 says: Aug 4, 2011 7:47 PM

I’d rather have Floyd or Cothery, but I love the moves the Niners are making within the last 36 hours. Rodgers, Goodwin, Witner, and now Edwards. I know Edwards can’t catch, and I know people don’t think Alex Smith can throw him the deep ball. Neither of those really matter with this pickup. Edwards will stretch the field, like we tried to do with Ginn last year. This will open up the running game and the short passes at least. My opinion of the Niners front office has taken a 180 within the last 2 days. Lets go San Fran!!!

  42. time2speakup says: Aug 4, 2011 7:48 PM

This should be an interesting season for Niner Fans the world over. Coming outta the gate, our first 2-3 opponents will have no tape to study – and thus, no idea what to expect from this offense – or the D and Special Teams also for that matter (because Ooops, Ol Predictible Singletary flew the coop). While they’re figuring that out, its pick your poison time – who do you defend – Gore outta the backfield, Davis and Walker at tight end, Braylon Edwards????

  43. trollhammer20 says: Aug 4, 2011 7:52 PM

I think half their reason for signing Edwards is that they’re worried about Crabtree’s foot. Currently, he’s out of camp with an injury to the same foot that gave him problems in college. The rumor is he may start the year on the PUP list and miss at least the first six weeks of the year.

  44. majorseahawk says: Aug 4, 2011 7:53 PM

Haha, this is great! Now they have two WRs with brick hands. And this one can’t even stay out of trouble off the field. Yet another bad move by the 9ers, wow they really are trying to get Luck.

  45. shadowgm1 says: Aug 4, 2011 7:53 PM

Huh. Exactly where I thought he should have went in the 2005 draft, instead of them taking that waste of space Smith. Too bad he doesn’t have a decent QB to get the ball out to him.

  46. greymares says: Aug 4, 2011 7:53 PM

who cares? who did the EAGLES sign today?

  47. bearsrulepackdrool says: Aug 4, 2011 7:54 PM

Wow if Edwards is getting less money than Sims-Walker and only a little more than a former jailbird, T.O. has GOT TO BE shaking his head right now.

  48. cosmosis23 says: Aug 4, 2011 8:01 PM

I don’t get this one… for $483K the Jets passed on Braylon and got Plax?

People like to kill Braylon and I get why. But he caught the pass that set up the playoff win vs. the Colts in the last minute. He also had a huge play against the Texans to win a game in the last minute in the reg season. The guy can play.

  49. andyreidisfat says: Aug 4, 2011 8:07 PM

This is another team in the NFC west that doesn’t understand no matter how good your WR are you need a QB to throw it them. Crabtree when healthy is probably better than Edwards.

To jets fans…. If you don’t know that your team is worse than they were ending last season you are delusional. The Jets had two Wr last year and they WAY over paid for the WR who produced less. My guess is Edwards has better production than any WR the Jets have this season. I expect 1000 yrds and 8-10 td’s out of Edwards. And that could rise if Smith can finally play well under his first really good offensive coaches. I’d also guess te niners have a better chance of making playoffs this season. Though thats mostly because of who they play more than on who is the better team.

Don’t forget Alex Smith isn’t much different than “Sanchize” AS QB’s they are about the same.

  50. souldogdave says: Aug 4, 2011 8:08 PM

Just curious as to why, in your words, if a WR can’t catch, and a QB can’t get him the ball, why would a defense respect it and not stack the box? Makes zero sense.

Tarvares Jackson, Sidney Rice (who was less impressive without Favre than Josh Morgan)??? I don’t think you’re in any position to question another team’s signings! You were just a default playoff team last year and you’ve gotten worse. Please!

  63. juliusanonymous says: Aug 4, 2011 8:41 PM

The Seahawks should have been the biggest winners in free agency this offseason. Not because of anything the Seahawks did, but because of the various moves by San Fran and Arizona. I’m loving this move by San Fran almost as much as them sticking with Alex Smith. Heck, it’s almost as good as Arizona giving up DRC and a pick for Kolb. God it sure is good to be in the NFC West.

  64. marcsasharc says: Aug 4, 2011 8:44 PM

    majorseahawk-

i bet SF finishes with a better record than Seattle. id bet whatever youd like.

bad signing? Braylon isnt a top 10 WR but he is a playmaker and he makes the team better. Crabtree has brick hands? do you watch football?

he also has signed a 1 year deal. if he has a terrible year then he wont see any $ in next years market. so the 9ers signed a playmaker who has something to prove for only $3 mil and still leaves the team way under the cap. plus, this team isnt coached by an idiot anymore. harbaugh coaches just like his brother, and that is definitely working out in Baltimore.

again, how is this signing bad?

  65. goldrush36 says: Aug 4, 2011 8:52 PM

@babjesus69 I agree, and I am hoping Rogers does well enough at corner to re-sign and keep it together a few years so we can get Blackmon in the draft. Crabtree won’t be re-signing here even if by some miracle he makes it through his contract. The fact that he isn’t Harbaugh’s and Baalke’s pick will make it easier for them to part with him if need be.

  72. tatum064 says: Aug 4, 2011 9:29 PM

That was done more so that the Cardinals wouldnt get him, so kudos to S.F. – writing is obviously on the wall for both Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree. This could work, or it could blow up in their face. Alex Smith will be getting quite nervous with this volatile group set to explode on him if he just so much as overthrows them once.

  73. kevpft says: Aug 4, 2011 9:36 PM

Sounds like a pretty good move to me. If everyone lives up to potential – which is always an if – you have two very talented receivers, and energized new coach, and a couple of good QBs, especially the new guy. All in a division that is not out of reach for anyone.

What’s not to like about that? Worth a try.

Hey Braylen, just don’t try to eat a cheese burger or get your kid circumcised and you’ll be fine… Everything else is pretty much fair game.
