Cowboys add Abram Elam to safety mix

Carolina Panthers v Cleveland Browns Getty Images

The Cowboys finalized a long-rumored agreement with safety Abram Elam on Wednesday night, according to Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com.

Elam got an identical contract to Gerald Sensabaugh, who just re-signed with the team: One year, $2.5 million.  The two veterans will battle for playing time, with Elam possibly having the edge because he played for Rob Ryan last year in Cleveland.

We criticized the Cowboys for keeping Terence Newman, but the Cowboys were wise not to give Michael Huff $8 million-per-year when comparable players were out there for cheap.

Umm no they won’t. They’ll both start, barring injury or somebody else stepping way up in preseason.

they wont be battling for playing time, Elam will play FS, Sensabaugh will play SS.

Nice move, the guy isn’t great, he’s an average FS, but still a huge upgrade over Alan Ball, and he knows Ryans defense, so he will be well equipped to make the calls in the secondary.

    Thank god! Finally, something positive.

I ain’t saying the guy is All-Pro, but he has to be better than what we got right now.

ELAM?! ARE YOU KIDDING?! this is going to put them over the top to beat the eagles

Salary cap is a b*tch, eh Jerry?

  7. themanchine says: Aug 4, 2011 10:11 AM

They should’ve signed a CB, Carlos Rogers?, and moved Newman to FS

  8. pjcgoodfella says: Aug 4, 2011 10:12 AM

    @Smellssmalicious

I understand your frustration but who said anything about this putting them over the top to beat the Eagles? Cowboys don’t need any one guy to put them over the top, they need the guys they have to perform to their abilities and they have the talent to beat ANYBODY.

Browns D coordinator, and a Browns Saftey. Looks like they are ready to copy the success the Browns had last year. Good call Al Davi… I mean Jerry Jones.

Don’t get too smug, they came within 3 points of doing just that with Jon Kitna at QB, Alan Ball at S and without Dez Bryant and Marcus Spears last year.

Speaking of Al Davis, do you think the Eagles are trying to replicate the Raiders’ 2010 success by bringing Asomugha in?

I like this signing, in spite of the fact that he was originally a Cowboy.

For a team with barely any wiggle room, this is a great move at a bargain price for one year.

I’m just glad they left Michael Huff alone.

Can’t really compare Asomugha to the likes of this Elam kid. Plus Eagle didn’t hire A raiders coach. And Asomugha was one of the few bright spots of the Raiders, Elam? I think of a kicker when I hear that name, not a game changer DB.
So enjoy fighting over space with the Redskins in the NFC East basement all year.

We will take what we get, I really wanted Dashon Goldson at FS though. Elam was originally a Cboy, then a Jet, followed Mangini to Cleveland and now has follow Rob Ryan back down to Dallas. So it does speak to the fact that his coaches value him, and take him with them.

I think you missed the point on his post there, buddy. One player does not a defense make.

Your article this week says the ‘Boys are around $3.7 million over the salary cap.

This puts them roughly $5 million over (assuming he’s bumping someone else out of the top 51 who was earning something near the veteran minimum, and assuming that your numbers were right).

They’ve got some work to do by tomorrow.

I would love to know who your team is and what have they done Lately, We didnt need a bunch of headliners, We needed role players and thats what he is. You must be sniffing glue if you think we are going to be fighting for last place!!!!!!

Eagles won the division w/o Asomugha or any of our amazing free agent class. So keep that skins rivalry strong cause you two will fight to stay out of last place all year. Cowgirls suck !

Typical. Cowboys fans getting excited about signing two guys (Sensabaugh) that no other team showed interest in.

  21. paulsmith107 says: Aug 4, 2011 12:19 PM

I can’t wait for all these paper champ eagles fans to see what happens to paper champs nothing they got all these new guys who still can’t practice an offensive line coach turned defensive coordinator and a qb who gets hurt a bunch and had a career year you idiot eagle fans do know why it’s called a career year right cause chances are it won’t be repeated as his regression in the last half of the year showed but never fear you have Vince young as your backup and Andy Reid who is the worst in game adjustment coach in football ha ha ha good luck idiots

Wow, YOu guys sure did win it last year Huh?!?! And all it took was for Romo to get hurt for you all to do it!!!!! But it’s nice that you guys feel so good about being the offseason champs. Took that from the Skins Huh?!!? Thats really good for you all. But the games are played on Sundays, And like Rob Said ” we are going to kick their asses!!”

    @paulsmith

Andy Reid has proven he can win games with the equipment manager at QB.

And I don’t know who your team is, but unless Vince Lombardi is your coach, you’d probably be lucky to have Andy as your HC.

  24. solomon151 says: Aug 4, 2011 1:20 PM

On Tuesday, Lurie was quoted by the Bellingham Herald as saying, “We have a long way to go. As the Redskins have proven over the years, you don’t win by winning free agency. You win by having the best execution on the field.”

And for you fake ass eagles fan that dont know who Lurie is, He’s your owner DUmb asses!!!!!!

Andy Reid has proven he hasn’t figured out fundamental clock management. There’s also that “Father of the Year” trophy that he’ll never get.
