Lurie doesn’t like “Dream Team” label

Andy Reid, Jeffery Lurie AP

When Vince Young used the words “Dream Team” to describe his new Philadelphia Eagles teammates, critics were quick to pounce. Now we can add Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie to the list of those who don’t like the label.

We’re about as far from a dream team as you can be,” Lurie told reporters today. “We’re a blue-collar, grind-it-out football team. Be aggressive, but be humble.”

Lurie has expressed satisfaction with the way his football people acted aggressively to spend in free agency, but he has also said the Eagles know they have to do more than spend in free agency.

On Tuesday, Lurie was quoted by the Bellingham Herald as saying, “We have a long way to go. As the Redskins have proven over the years, you don’t win by winning free agency. You win by having the best execution on the field.”

Taking a shot at an NFC East rival like that is uncharacteristic of Lurie — it sounds more like something Rob Ryan would say. Lurie said today that the Packers are the real dream team, because they won the Super Bowl.

One thing we know for sure about the 2011 season: If the Eagles’ season ends with anything other than Lurie hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy, it will be fans of other teams who gleefully bring up the “Dream Team” label.

Jeff can’t wait for this to blow over so they can go back to being the “Fat Green Team”. Or the “Jim Beam Team”. He hates high expectations.

I didn’t even notice Lurie’s “shot” at the Redskins until you mentioned it. The Redskins being terrible is a casual fact at this point

Yes, and we look forward to it. It’s inevitable.

If the Eagles opponents need to use quotes to fire themselves up before a game, then they don’t need to be playing them. I mean, honestly, it’s not like Lurie, Reid, or anyone else in the heirarchy came up with that name–it was a player who was marvelling at how fast the team was signing FAs.

I’m a Giants fan and I’m re-nicknaming them the “Super Bowl 46 Champions” team. I’m not even sure why the other 31 teams are playing the season – let’s just hand it over to Philly. Give Vick the league MVP and AP Offensive MVP and Asomugha the AP Defensive MVP award. I guess Vick should get the Super Bowl MVP, too, in retrospect.

And for the record, they beat the Jets in the Super Bowl, 24-21. Rookie kicker, Henery out of Nebraska, kicks the game-winning FG in the first-ever Super Bowl OT. Congrats, Philly. Now let’s all pretend we’re surprised when it happens…

Jeff Lurie has always been just a touch below Dan Snyder in regards to out-and-out scuzziness, so I find it terribly ironic that he would cite Snyder’s team as how not to do something after following their exact model this offseason. Here’s hoping you get the same results that Dan got, Jeff.

After being in the news for so long I would think football fans would actually realize where it came from: VY answering the question “what do you think of all these free agents”

He said Dream Team while laughing. What, should he have said “oh they’re ok but I’m their best decision so far”?

  36. miket0823 says: Aug 4, 2011 12:56 PM

This whole topic is an incredibly stupid twist of context. Vince Young was happy to get signed and play with Reid/Vick, felt excited about his new team, was asked a leading question, and used a commonplace phrase, dream team. Everyone harping on it is just trying to fuel an implosion. Yes, this is bound to appear aggressive. Since when is that a bad thing? The pick-ups are quality and structured with the cap in mind. Eagle players and coaches do not care about the soap opera crap, that’s what Lurie is saying. We are desperate to win a Super Bowl to shut everyone up, since that is our only current chip, and it’s on the franchise’s shoulders, not hoisted amid raining confetti. They may not win the Super Bowl, but they are clearly in better position to do so than they were the past few years. People said this after the TO signing, and the Eagles made the Super Bowl. This team is numb to caving under expectations that most other franchises never even create. Put up or shut up, we know.

  37. Deb says: Aug 4, 2011 12:58 PM

The Eagles made a couple of great free agent moves, they didn’t go out and buy a bunch of mismatched aging superstars for more than they were worth at that point in their careers. So I don’t get the comparisons to Snyder trying to buy a Super Bowl.

But that’s a terrible photo of Lurie … he looks 20 years older than he is.

  38. jmat40 says: Aug 4, 2011 12:59 PM

Wait now…are you saying that adding free agents is inherently arrogant? What a load of nonsense. I guess they should have said “Sorry, Nnamdi. We’d like you here as much as you’d like to be here, but we don’t want to look like we’re trying too hard.”

Lurie and the Eagles are getting killed for this and didn’t even have anything to do with the hype. The media set up a straw man and the public is more than happy to knock it down. Aside from VY’s offhand remark taken wildly out of context, find me a quote by an Eagles player or FO member that’s anything but reasonable and humble. Just one. I’ll wait.

F*ck all of you eagles haters! As far as the blue collar/hard working comment, isn’t it ok that DeSean is holding out? Wouldn’t you be? The kid clearly deserves more money. We’ll work out a deal soon and he’ll be working hard like every year. And since Young has been with Philly he hasn’t done anything to show that he’s not a hard worker, blaming staff was what he did in Tennessee, not Philly you dumbass. Don’t talk sh*t just because you’re team sucked in FA compared to the eagles. And how do you know Young ‘meant’ what he said when he said dream team!? He was just excited and responding to a question in a positive way, f*ck that label though let the playing talk for the team once season starts. The birds are gonna be dirty this year, they’re going to win it all, you haters just watch! New talent, new coaching staff, refreshed defense, they’re gonna be unstoppable. Anyone who hates is just jealous, end of story!

  52. donovanmcflabb says: Aug 4, 2011 1:58 PM

Boy there’s a lot of haters out there. What have the Eagles FO really done besides sign a ton of new talent (at very reasonable terms) to the team. Why not load up with fresh talent and shake things up? If each player pans out, then keep him. If not, then cut him. What should teams be doing right now? Sitting on their hands while there’s an ass-load of players available who are willing to sign low contracts?

I’m a life-long Eagles fan and I LOVE what they’ve done. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn’t, but they haven’t risked a whole lot (even Asomougha took less to play in Philly) while other teams have accomplished little or nothing this offseason. If nothing else, Banner & Co. have done their best to ensure that the coaching staff has the tools it needs to win.

You also hear the excuses at the end of the year or the “but, but, but …” comments or “the best team doesn’t always win”. Last year it was how Vick was the final piece of the puzzle and then lose in the wildcard round. That being said, this is a welcome change. Usually, the media telling us about how the cowboys, who haven’t won a playoff game in forever, are going to win the division. Too bad championships aren’t won on paper.

The only thing left is to start playing the games. Once the wins and stats start accumalating the haters will taper off or at least start with … WAAAHHH they only are dominating there division b/c they signed so and so in FA… just like your team should have done but didnt. Start workin on the excuses why the Eagles win more games this year than last and how they bought there way to the top of the division.. oh wait… we DID already win the division last year and still got better… i would hate if the Eagles where on my teams schedule too. And on a side note Jim Johnson is one the better DC ive ever seen and im sure hes smiling down from heaven thinkin of all the blitz packages he could put together with theses DBs we got now, if Castillo is a quarter of the DC JJ was then Im sure we are gonna do very well.

  60. jsrdc says: Aug 4, 2011 2:34 PM

Lurie is quickly seeing how a quote from a head case second string QB (who was disowned by his former team, coach, and city) is quickly putting the unwanted pressure and expectations on the team. They should have put a gag order on VY as soon as he got to Philly. OF COURSE the press is going to run with this. That is typical of the controversy these leeches love to focus on.

FMwarner, How is VY calling the Eagles a “dream Team” taken out of context? I think it is pretty cut and dry what he said and why he said it. The press is running with it, for sure, but that is what they do. Just like the “America’s team” designation for the Cowboys, the press is ridiculous with titles, but you Eagle fans had no hesitation on beating that dead horse title well beyond reason. Now you know what it is like to have a title associated with your team, and all the pressure and expectations that come along with it. You get to bear that type of weight for the season, which is great, because the rest of the teams in the league get to fly under the radar (especially in the NFC East) since the Eagles are the “Dream Team”.

Birdobeamen, I will note you ensuring on a SB win. A pretty ignorant call given the fact that this year is going to put on display injuries more numerous than you have likely ever seen, and having a healthy team is key to success in this league. Overzealous Birds fans counting their chickens before they hatch. Priceless. What will be even more priceless is the look on Eagle fan’s faces when they don’t win the SB this year. Don’t say I didn’t warn you, and you better man up when it doesn’t happen.

Yeah, you’ve sure approached free agency like a blue collar type. That’s like Dan Snyder claiming he overspends each season on players with a lot of heart.

This team will bleed rush yardage and slot receiver yardage like no other. Because the Jets can shut down the corners, have they been able to get over the hump the last two years? No, because they can’t stop the run. Reid will be run out of town if they don’t produce, and Vick’s potential is being neutered by the lack of a WR on roster. All they’ve done, aside from swindling the Cards out of DRC and signing Nnamdi, is sign injury risk after injury risk…and where’s the moolah for Miss DeSean?

Sorry to pee in the Kool-Aid party here, but it’s reality check time.

Exactly! The only people bringing up “Dream Team” are talking heads in the media and the fans that are so scared of the Eagles, they want to lay it on thick.

It’s okay to be scared of a team this stacked. We won’t win 16 games this season. We will, however, be in the playoffs.

Not even on the job for a month…does he forget that he is the BACK UP (Maybe not even that!)

    —————————————————————

Not only that, all he wants to BE is a backup! Beta emo pansies like Vince Young shouldn’t be allowed in the NFL.

    ——————————————

He wants to spend a year as a backup to learn from the best QB guru since Jim Walsh. He wants to be the understudy of a guy who everyone said was washed up – Vick – and turned in what was almost an MVP season last year.

That shows humility and wisdom. Two things no Cowgirls fan has ever displayed.

VY is going to make a damn fine 2nd round pick acquisition next offseason!

Yawn. As a Giants fan you hear this EVERY year from Eagles fans and players.

    ————————————

What was your excuse when we bumped you out of the playoffs two years ago? Or took four minutes to destroy your playoff hopes last year?

Sounded a lot like “but, but, but…”

    “Jim Walsh”, eh?

    You misspelled “Vince Young”.

Lurie is quickly seeing how a quote from a head case second string QB (who was disowned by his former team, coach, and city) is quickly putting the unwanted pressure and expectations on the team.

    —————————————————————–

To be fair, I don’t think anybody is putting on more pressure and expectations than Lurie. The pressure is squarely on Andy Reid’s head. Let’s be honest, Reid’s got his good points but his bad points like his game and clock management are bad points that no NFL head coach should have. Lurie has taken away all excuses and declared the Eagles “all in”. When the Eagles don’t win the Super Bowl, maybe he will do the first really impressive thing he’s ever done since he bought the Eagles… admit he was wrong about Andy Reid and end his underwhelming tenure.

I like what the Eagles are doing. They have signed some really high priced players and annointed themselves the “Dream Team” before the season even starts… Wow……

Do any of these players study history? Those who fail to study history or destined to repeat it. Do they not remember what happened to the last team that had a Championship party before the season started? A little humility goes a long way just ask LaChoke.

Following the Eagles Win-or-Lose is going to be fun.

    @ famucancer and fmwarner

What I am saying is that if you’re gonna sign these marquee guys, then don’t complain when people say that you’re putting together a “dream team” because just like with the Miami Heat, it is inevitable that that label will be applied. Lurie just sounds like a whiny bitch about it. Don’t complain about it. Be thankful that people are even talking about your team. Other than that, sign who you want. I don’t care. It does look good on paper.

I still stand by my 11-5, 2nd place in the NFC East prediction too.

    @ fmwarner

Didn’t Jason Babin call the Eagles the “Miami Heat of the NFL”? HELLO? HELLo? You still there, fmwarner. There’s the one you asked for. Way to follow your team.

Babin poured fuel on the fire. Lurie pours fuel by even mentioning it even if it’s to squash the dream team labels. There’s your FO member. Yes, he wasn’t bragging about being a dream team, but by complaining about it, he comes across whiny. As a smart business man, he has to know that the type of signings that he’s made is going to draw those type of labels in this current sports culture. Just own it and go with the flow. Don’t complain about it especially when two of your players are promoting it.

The last piece of the puzzle is Brett Favre.
