Good god people. Stick to what you know, please! The ambulance was there, as it always is. It's dedicated to the scene and takes nothing away from the community at large. It was less than 150 yards away. Patterson was removed from the scene within 15 minutes of the seizure. In that time, he was evaluated, treated with an IV, oxygen and possible meds, secured to a long spine board and moved. I have little doubt that many of you could tie your shoes in that time. That includes the so-called "professionals" who write for this site and went with the 15 minutes thing that came from a comment and no facts from the scene.

Lurie has given out over $100 million in contracts to free agents in the last week or so. Gotta make up for it somewhere, I guess.

The fact that you're using this story to troll the Eagles further proves you're a degenerate scumbag, Vox.

I too was wondering as they spent a good ten minutes discussing this guy’s medical status and whatnot. The Eagle’s trainer was up there having a press conference about it. Seemed like the trainer was being a bit of a blowhard for the media.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The trainer needs to get his 15 minutes of "Dream Team" fame. After all, ESPN is there full time, hell, you'd think Favre WAS there the way ESPN is fawning over Philly!

Best of Luck Mike Patterson, get well first, make decisions later.

Sal is also wrong about surgery or radiation. no one has said anything about course of treatment.
Maybe you should do some research your self instead of listening to Sal and others. They have an ambulance on sight every day they also have a guy by the name of DR NG on sight everyday he is an ER Doctor with all the medications on sight for seizures and other such things that would be available at the hospital.

Reason it took 15 minutes for him to LEAVE and not for the ambulance to get their is bc he was seizuring for 4 minutes then they stablized him and put him in a body brace before loading him in the ambulance.

Stop getting you info 2nd hand and go to the source.

This is a great site, but please...cut the holier than thou crap.

First of all, you have sources, right? How hard would it be to find out whether or not Burkholder was authorized.

You can basically make any accusation by placing a question mark at the end of it, or by prefacing the opposite with the phrase "we hope that...".

Secondly, if you were so concerned about Patterson's privacy, you wouldn't have given his condition even wider play by publishing it yourself. You would have taken the high road instead, and decided not to touch the story.

Agreeing with tradeassociation

@jo3jo:

The issue is that an NFL practice facility is a place where severe injuries have a much greater chance of occurring than, say, a software company or a law office. Then again, I would much rather have emergency resources and personnel dedicated to helping and saving “average joes” out there than celebrities. I am absolutely opposed to an ambulance being present at every NFL practice if it means one less ambulance being available to help victims of car crashes and fires.

Fine, severe injuries happen at NFL practices. But what about life treatening injuries where time is a factor. You are going to have more of those at car crashes and fires then at a football practice. Those are not more likily at an NFL practice.

I for one cant believe so many people think an ambulance is going to be at their home within 15 minutes. Then at the same time do not see that having an ambulance at every NFL practice is going to make the response time longer for everyone else.

Do more life threatening injuries happen at construction sites or football practices? Do we want an ambulace at every construction site?

The celebrity or athelete does not deserve more care then the average Joe. But it is also true though that they do not deserve less care.

The "why wasn't the ambulance there" is a knee jerk reaction. Lok at the full picture of the event and extrapolate what you want out. This event was due to a brain defect. Its not even football related. How many people had convulsions that day and were not on a practice field? Should they have had an ambulance waiting too?

Guy is lucky to be alive. Hopefully surgery goes well and he lives a long life.
If my recollection is correct, OSHA requires work sites (usually rural) to be within 15 minutes of a rescue unit or that worksite must have a trained first aid worker there.

Our State transportation dept used to require us to have a trained first aid person until OSHA changed the law. 15 minutes in a rural location is pretty standard.

I was at camp last Saturday and an ambulance was present that day. Not sure why it took 15 minutes (if it really did), but I would imagine that all teams must have an ambulance present. With all of the injuries that happen in football, it would be silly not to have one nearby.

When a million people have you in their thoughts in a positive way, you get the best quality doctor that specializes in AVMs and you follow the treatment to the letter of the care plan...then we can all breathe a sigh of relief that Mike Patterson the man will live a long and healthy life. If he happens to be Mike Patterson the Eagle Player, back in the lineup...all the better, but your your sir, take care of yourself and be with fmily and heal. We love you for all you have done for our team and for the hopes of everything you may have left in the tank. All the best!

@jo3jo:

The issue is that an NFL practice facility is a place where severe injuries have a much greater chance of occurring than, say, a software company or a law office. Then again, I would much rather have emergency resources and personnel dedicated to helping and saving "average joes" out there than celebrities. I am absolutely opposed to an ambulance being present at every NFL practice if it means one less ambulance being available to help victims of car crashes and fires.

Get well soon Mike. It was nice seeing you in green and silver.

The Eagles have been using that training facility for pre season for a while now. On top of having the normal training/medical staff on site they also have an ER Dr. present at the all practices. The problem is not the Eagles did or did not have the option of having an ambulance present it is a rural area that the college is at where they train.

So you're semi-critical of of the team for disclosing Patterson's condition, but you were semi-critical of the team for NOT disclosing Maclin's? So which one is it?

Or did you not realize HIPAA laws existed until 30 people mentioned it in the comments of the Maclin story yesterday?

The Eagles are like the Kremlin in terms of info, so if this got out it's because Patterson told them they might as well just reveal the condition instead of having everyone in the media speculate about why his 2011 season is over. The Eagles have an ER doc at every practice; if the ambulance had left for the hospital sooner( because it was there sooner), it wouldn't have changed anything in this case.

It would be nice to have an ambulance follow me around everywhere I go just in case I get into an accident...... but the reality is that it's not practical. During the course of an NFL football season, how many practices are held, and how many times is someone rushed away from practice in an ambulance with something that is critical ?

My guess is that there are at least 3 to 4 thousand practices a year league wide, and a true medical emergency probably only arrises only once every few years. Additionally, teams have trained medical personnel (trainers) at every practice.

Having an ambulance at every game makes sense. Having one at every practice would be impractical, and a waste of valuable resourses.
