Shaun Ellis works out for the Patriots

Shaun Ellis AP

We wrote Wednesday how longtime Jet Shaun Ellis was in limbo, hoping the Jets would improve their one-year offer for the veteran’s minimum salary.  To conclude the post, we half joked: “This is usually the time when the Patriots would become interested.”

Well, the Patriots are now interested.

Ellis worked out for the Patriots Thursday, according to Mike Rodrak of ESPNBoston.com. That doesn’t mean a deal is imminent; the Patriots also worked out Raheem Brock, Quentin Moses, and Matt Roth in recent days. No one has signed.

Still, Ellis fits the Belichick M.O. perfectly.  He’s a veteran of 3-4 defenses and is hungry for a title.  Signing him would tweak the Jets.  Belichick also loves to sign guys who play well against the Pats, and Ellis destroyed New England last January.

The Pats and Belichick always seem to be playing chess while everyone else in the AFC East is still trying to play checkers.

Wouldn’t be surprised if wily Bill pulled this off.

Be careful hooded one, this looks a lot like the scam the NY Yankees pulled on the Red Sox by sending double agent Ramiro Mendoza to them and messing up their bullpen!

Ellis is also the guy I believe the Jets picked with the compensation pick they got from the Pats when BB resigned from the Jets HC job to take the Pats HC job. The circle would be complete

Belichick won titles early in his time in New England, because he signed veterans for small money. Players like Roman Phifer, Bryan Cox, Henry Thomas, Bobby Hamilton, and Anthony Pleasant.

Shaun Ellis fits that mold exactly. He reminds me alot of Bobby Hamilton. Any time you can sign a proven veteran with tread left on his tires at a low price, you are ahead of the game. If you can pilfer him from your biggest rival, even better

    Make the deal, Bill.

This would piss me off bad. I love how all the pats fans are all saying sign him. You all want any jet player you can get even a lifelong jet like ellis.

I’m kind of confused here. Are they Pats going to play a 4-3 or 3-4? If they play a 4-3 would Ellis be a 3rd DT?

To quote another newly acquired DL by the Pats,

    “Hell yeah!”

Jets, make Ellis an offer!!! Hes the longest tenured Jet and makes big plays in the playoffs. This was obviously going to happen if you didnt make him a real offer.

First Jericho and now this??? Mike, Rex, are you trying to piss off your whole fan base or what?

Braylon for 3.5 would have been better than Plax for 3.0.

    Please stop making dumb moves!!

As a Patriots fan I couldn’t stand this guy when he played for the Jets. Why? Because he was a disruptive force and a thorn in the Patriots side. I would love to see him in a Patriots Uniform. MAD RESPECT!!

This would be a tragedy. Green Bay should get in the race here. If he’s looking for slightly better than league vet minimum, he shouldn’t cost a lot against the cap. I like this guy.

Not quite – San Fran used the Patriots pick Julian Peterson.

The Jets did trade up with San Francisco to grab Ellis – which they couldn’t have done without the Patriots pick – so it’s not quite false but not quite true

But not as bad as the staged scam that Theo Epstein pulled on the Yankees when he spooked them into overpaying Jose Contreras. All the Yankees ended up with was Esteban Loaiza a year later.

Yeah because there is a long list of former Jets players that have come to New England in the last 10 years. Pats fans saw a terrible NE defense last year, and Ellis provides an upgrade. Dont be pissed that New England (and their fans) want him, be pissed that your Jets dont want him. Hahaha, Pats fans want any Jets player, please, get over yourself. I think you are confusing things, you are thinking of Shawn Crable, Larry Izzo, Ty Law, Matt Chatham, Kevin O’Connell, Damian Woody, you know, former Pats that ended up in NY… Not to mention the interest the Jets had in Moss and Adalius Thomas. Just because the Pats were able to snatch up Woodhead, dont be bitter. After the Pats trim the fat, the Jets swoop in and pick it up and think it will mean SB.

Now we get to hear how Belichick is a genius and can magically make shaun ellis 25 years old.

Pats fan: “Jack Smith of the Jets sucks!”

Media: “And the jets cut Jack Smith today.”

Pats fan: “Haha! And now they’ve lost Jack Smith! He was really good!”

Let’s see ……. the Jet’s division rival is New England …… and they play New England twice a year …….. that’s two potential wins against two potential Patriot’s losses ……. and that’s not counting a likely playoff match-ups.

Tell me again why the Jet’s aren’t keeping this guy???

Oh yeah, they aren’t that bright. Gotcha.

Yeah, I mean, it’s not like the Jets would steal a Super Bowl head coach, like a Bill Parcells, or his best rusher, like a Curtis Martin, or steal an assistant coach to make him their Head Coach, TWICE, like a Bellichick or a Mangini.

    I totally get your point.
