Thank you!! I want the safest field … and as a fan of zone-blitzing schemes, I like the fast track turf provides. But there’s nothing quite like watching football players covered in mud. I may be the only fan who was overjoyed during that 3-0 Pittsburgh/Miami mud bowl a couple of years ago.

To address your point about Woodson- artificial turf technology has advanced almost as rapidly as the internet or cell phones.

The turf Woodson got hurt on in 1995 bears as much resemblance to the turf of today as the StarTac phone of 1995 does to an Iphone 4.

The artificial surfaces used today are engineered to minimize impact on joints, play the same way wet or dry, and be impervious to temperature changes- in other words they don’t freeze and become hard like natural surfaces do.

The prevailing sentiment when Heinz Field was built was that natural grass was safer than turf- and at that point it was.

But I guarantee you that no new stadium will ever be built again with a natural grass field.

No, phil, those were just home-team examples. I wasn’t comparing Astro Turf to Field Turf. I was comparing turf to grass … which hasn’t changed in the last 40 years. I’d like to know whether today’s turf is safer than grass. (BTW, Rod Woodson wasn’t playing on the astroturf of the 70s in Detroit in 1995, genius.)

When Pittsburgh played at Three Rivers, it seemed we were always losing players to turf. Jack Lambert was forced to retired because of “turf toe.” Rod Woodson’s ACL tear came on the turf in Detroit. So they put in grass at Heinz Field and now everyone complains about those field conditions–although they’re not as bad as Chicago’s. So what’s more dangerous–turf or grass???

FieldTurf must have given Urlacher a sweet deal when they installed their product on Urlacher Field inside the Indoor Practice Facility at the University of New Mexico.

You can look it up.

The new turf fields drain the water and play the same way wet or dry.

They are more cushioned and don’t freeze in the winter becoming the equivalent of a macadam parking lot.

They are also much less expensive to maintain over time.

And somewhere has got somebody who knows somebody and then those nice fellas down at the park district whose job it is to take care of the grass (once a year whether it needs it or not apparently) well they know somebody too. And whatever would they do if theycouldn’t mow the grass…

Cleveland Municipal Stadium had the worst field ever-being a dual facility for BB and FB.
Players hated it but fans thought it was to our advantage and we (the fans) loved it.
