DeMarcus Ware restructures deal to create cap room

AP

As of Thursday, the Cowboys were more than $6.6 million over the 2011 salary cap.  They’ve likely trimmed a large amount of that deficit via a restructuring of the contract of Pro Bowl linebacker DeMarcus Ware.

“The process is already finished,” Ware told Rainer Sabin of the Dallas Morning News on Thursday.  “I don’t want to get into any numbers or anything like that.  It’s done.  I did whatever I needed to do to help the team.”

For Ware, helping the team likely meant taking right now a huge chunk of 2011 salary that would have been paid out in 17 game checks.  So it’s not really much of a sacrifice.

Sabin speculates that the Cowboys may have saved up to $5.4 million in 2011 cap dollars via the maneuver, which would push that money into future years.

  1. Overspending on overrated…………redoing contracts to push money into future years to get under the cap or to overspend on more overrated……………Dallas is on their way to a Redskins-like 10 run of mediocrity.

Don’t be mad that the Redskins took Carlos Rogers two slots before Demarcus Ware went in the 2005 draft. Be mad that he was a complete bust for the Redskins and is a 49er now. Way to go, Joe Gibbs!

  3. Now we need to cut brooking and two of the kickers… Trim some fat! And D-Ware is not over rated. Top LB in the league

Quick, name a player that has more sacks the DeMarcus since he was drafted.

Umm…you can’t. Because he has more than anybody. At any position.

As long as Ware stays healthy he is a future HOFer. Guaranteed.

    Overated my @$$

  5. In regards to paintan8’s comments….He has to be an Eagles fan….with an idiotic statement like that He only wishes to have a player such as Ware’s ability…..

You are a complete tool !!!!!

  6. Coming from an Eagles fan – Nice to see there is still some players out there that are not selfish and want to help the team win. D ware is one helluva player. wish eagles cold find a line back half as good as him.

  7. In spite of all of the garbage that Cowboys-haters spew……D-Ware is the ultimate team guy and is the most valuable player on the Cowboys in terms of performance and leadership.

Anyone who suggests he’s overrated isn’t worth replying to……..

  8. @paintan8 look at the roster, 90% of the players the Cowboys have paid for are guys we drafted and developed. That is how a team is built. Don’t compare the Cowboys to the Redskins who just overpaid to sign one our own players in Stephen Bowen. Get a clue

Demarcus Ware is overrated? Put down the crack pipe and go watch baseball.

  10. He also gave back Lockout Fund Money To Less Fortunate Players that’s 60k who else did that?

  11. My comments were not about Ware. I know he is not overrated. My comments referred to their entire roster, their salary cap situation and the fact that this process of reworking contracts to push money into future years never works and puts a team in salary cap hell. Should have been more clear on that. Negative comments deserved.

  12. If you notice, I never mentioned Ware in my initial post. He deserves every dollar he got. I suggest you look at the rest of their roster and count how may players are grossly overpaid. It’s more than half their roster easily.

  13. oh so the entire roster is overrated, their salary cap situation is overrated and restructuring contracts is overrated? Your comments are overrated. Good luck with Donovan Mcnabb. I mean that Beck guy.

  14. Ware’s a stud..and a good guy…Everyone who watches football realizes that. But it’s funny to watch cowgirl fans get all up in arms about a stupid comment….Why bother? You should be laughing, and i’m an Eagles fan as well…….

  15. I’m tired of all this crap about players been viewed as saints because they restructure to help their teams with the cap. I’m not singling out Ware. But the day ONE of these guys actually give back the first NICKEL of actual money THEN they can talk about doing something selfless “for the team”

  16. As an Eagles fan, anyone who says D-Ware is overrated needs to start actually becoming a fan of football. Dude’s a beast, and far and away the best player on that team.

Of course, Ware restructuring his contract isn’t about the ‘Boys making FA moves — it’s about the ‘Boys getting under the salary cap so the league doesn’t start voiding contracts.

  17. With regards to jw731 ‘s comments….All i can and will say is your comment is that from a typical ” pigeon ” fan !!!! Enjoy your ” Dream Team ” this year when you go 11-5 in the regular season and once again come up short….41 years and counting….This is Fat Andy’s last and final shot !!!!!! What a fat bag of wind !!!!!

  18. 3rd place??? Look, it doesn’t matter what FA’s we didnt sign, and what other teams did. I’m hearing it all over the place that the Cowboys did nothing to improve. We got rid of the dead weight. Those guys contributed nothing. Our key acquisition was replacing Phillips with Jason Garrett. We were 5-3 with him as HC, should’ve been 6-2 and lost the other 2 games by 1 and 3 pts. Won @NYG, @PHI, @IND. There’s no reason to not win the division with the talent we have. Bring on the haterz …
