Larry Fitzgerald Sr. says that Larry Jr. “always wanted to be a Viking”

Larry Fitzgerald AP

Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald is entering the final year of his contract, and the Cardinals having no way to keep him from leaving after the season, since the contract prevents the team from using the franchise tag on the 2004 first-rounder.  As a result, Cardinals G.M. Rod Graves recently told PFT Live that the franchise’s top priority at this point will be to sign Fitzgerald to a long-term extension before the regular season starts.

Some believe that Fitzgerald’s top alternative will be to return home to Minnesota and play for the Vikings.  One person with unique access to Fitzgerald’s thought processes has provided some insight into that theory.

Appearing on ESPN Radio Los Angeles with Max Kellerman and Marcellus Wiley, Larry Fitzgerald Sr. had this to say when asked about the possibility, via SportsRadioInterviews.com:  “No.  The Vikings are clearing cap space I have heard that but Larry has to make that decision.  This is his life and he has always wanted to be a Viking because he is a Viking. He was a ball boy and that type of thing.  He loves playing in Arizona, he’s valued in that community, and he’s a Cardinal.”

So what would it take for Larry Jr. to be a Viking?  “[T]he Cardinals would have to fall on their face,” Larry Sr. said.

One of the hosts then said that connecting the dots takes Larry Jr. back to Minnesota.  “Well yeah he always wanted to be a Viking growing up.  He got drafted by a Viking.  Dennis Green left Minnesota and went to Arizona.”

Moving forward, the Cardinals should make their best offer to Fitzgerald sooner rather than later, especially with more than $14 million in cap room as of Thursday.  If they can’t work it out with Larry Jr., then they should trade him to Minnesota now and get something in return.

We know it sounds far-fetched, but when Larry Sr. points out that the “Vikings are clearing cap space,” it sounds like something could possibly happen before 2012.

Thats cute. Give me a break. These are grown men and the Cardinals drafted and have taken care of Fitzgerald his entire career. They have made it clear he is their franchise player. No shot he bolts for the Vikings simply because he liked them growing up.

Also, Cardinals had good offseason and Vikings franchise is in absolute shambles right now. Just another reason he’s staying in Arizona.

I’m a huge Jets fan but you better believe if the Patriots drafted me, took care of me, and made me their franchise player there is no shot I’d be leaving simply b/c I liked the Jets growing up. Same goes for any franchise.

Larry Fitzgerald + Donovan McNabb, Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, & Visanthe Shiancoe/Kyle Rudolph

    or

Larry Fitzgerald + Kevin Kolb, Beanie Wells/Ryan Williams, Andre Roberts, Early Doucet, & Todd Heap

Yeah, I’d have to think really hard about the Vikings being an improvement if I was Fitz (sarcasm)

Really? Put Arizona in the NFC North and they wouldn’t win 5 games. MN will finish 10-6. We’ll hafta see if thats good enought for the playoffs or not. But Chicago has a season pattern of good, bad, good, bad. So this year would be a bad’s turn. GB the defending Champs will be tough and Lions are on the come up. So The purple will have a tough road, but we have a last place sced, which should help. Go Purple!

  18. trollhammer20 says: Aug 5, 2011 8:45 AM

On the rare occasions I see someone with a Cardinal jersey on (I live in New Mexico; they are the closest team but they hardly have any fans here), it’s a Larry Fitzgerald jersey.

The sole exception is a guy I used to work with who went to high school with Alan Branch. I’m thinking he has a Seahawks jersey now.

Fitzgerald IS the franchise in Arizona. If he leaves, Kolb’s chances of success plummet, the Cardinal offense will be mediocre, and the stadium will start to look more like Sun Devil Stadium in 2003, when they were getting 20-30,000 people a game.

  26. andyreidisfat says: Aug 5, 2011 9:13 AM

This wouldn’t be so shocking… the trade i mean. If the Cards couldn’t get a deal done before the season if i am them i am thinking about i too. But the Vikings would have to major pony up for that trade. Were talkin Harvin a first and most likely a major defensive piece perhaps the white line backer and maybe even a second round pick as well but i bet they would take a 2013 2nd.

Is that worth it to the Vikings. Or lets get really crazy since were just making stuff up on this NEWS site. How bout Fitz for Peterson and then thrown in berrian and one of the two top running backs on AZ. Now there is an interesting trade. If i am the Vikings i would do that in a second. I don’t know if AZ is willing to do that.

The Vikings would lose the NFL’s best rusher but its not that hard to find production at that position and lets say they get Williams and he gives you a 1000 yrds and 10 td’s thats not bad and you have 1a or 1b as far a WR goes.

For Arizona yeah they lose the games best WR but they do gain the games best runner and can move more in the direction of being the power run team they want to be anyway. In fact the more i think about it thats a really good trade going both ways. Though i think AZ would want to have Harvin as the WR coming back for that to work.

Someone mentioned Jackson and Samuel for Fitz. Now that would be a GREAT deal going both ways. That IMO would make the Cards the best team in the West and the Eagles about the same but better in the Red zone. That being said i like the idea of the kings of Corner and i love DeSean (and i paid 250 for his jersey ) so i wouldn’t want to do that.

  27. madpunter88 says: Aug 5, 2011 9:17 AM

I read once where Larry Fitzgerald said he still watches the Vikings every weekend, roots for them to win, and calls them his favorite team.

I have never heard of a professional athlete admitting that he roots for another team. I actually find it fascinating and endearing. The fact that he has maintained his love of the sport as a fan on top of being a star in the league is impressive.

I don’t care for the Vikings but I hope he ends up there just to fulfill his dream.

    _____________________

This is pretty damn dumb if you ask me. Offensive Linemen touch the ball 0 percent of the game, so it makes no sense to sign a star LT right? Fitz breaks the game open for the Vikings. He opens things up for the running game and AD, he gives Percy, Shank and Rudy more room to work the middle. He provides big plays at crucial times which put points on the board and can alter momentum.

Play makers are what separate the good and the mediocre in the NFL.

Their General Manager has survived an embalming. Their players crap marble. Their QB is ALL THAT and 3 Cheddar Brats.

Anyone leaving or being asked to leave that organization, well, they just have fallen from Holiness, I guess. “We wish them best of luck, and all that, but of course they’re leaving Paradise, so their success in life is now ended.”

It’d be great if he came back. I remember hearing he was a ball boy and his dad did/does cover local sports here. Just be neat if he came back and truly and completely did fulfil his childhood dream.

By the way, the $25M is on TOP of the $75M plus Zygi would have to give him to get him to play for the viklings.

  76. thephantomstranger says: Aug 5, 2011 4:01 PM

Carl, you just can’t deal with the fact that there are so many NFL players whose fondest desire has always been to play for the Vikings. Favre and Longwell come to mind, too. Couldn’t wait to get out of GB.

  77. rabidmike says: Aug 5, 2011 5:15 PM

5 years $70 million, $40 million guaranteed. Simple math people, look at the Cards cap space. Assuming, Fitz wants to do another contract (maybe with Minnesota) before his career ends.

  78. favreblows says: Aug 5, 2011 5:50 PM

    @ Phantom–

Longwell wasn’t offered a contract by the Pack, and Favre was told he could come back if he wanted to be Rodgers’ backup. Either way…..they were both sitting at home with the Purple and Watching the Pack win yet another world championship last year. The Packers decided to move on from both of them. Looks like it clearly was the right call too.

  79. red26 says: Aug 5, 2011 7:29 PM

The Vikes have as much chance of getting Fitzy as they do getting Tom Brady and Harris from the Steelers. There is a better chance of Adrian Peterson becoming a Cardinal than Fitzy a Vike.
I can’t blame you for dreaming but Fitzy IS the Cards. Dan Marino was a Ball Boy for the Steelers, how did that work out? Oh ya, he was a Dolphin.
He will retire and enter the HOF as a Cardinal.
Sr. and Jr. Live in MN in a compound. The whole Family does, “GREAT” people. Sr. writes for the Vikes. This talk sells papers and Radio ads. Don’t be dumb people. That is all it is, talk! Than again every time CNN reports the Dow will be down tomorrow, it crashes because were are idiots that believe that stuff.

Las Vegas has Minn O/U at 6.5. I think thats about right in that division. Lions vastly improved, Bears and Packers last year NFC finalists, and queens decimated by free agency.

Decimated? Oh no, T-Jack left us what are we gonna do???? He was terrible. Sidney has only done it for one year. That career year he had, the QB throwing it ALSO had a career year. So not that dissapointed Sid wasn’t re-signed. He will not duplicate nor improve on that one year with T-Jack or any other QB throwing it to him. Ray Edwards had a great run during the last part of 09. But has done nothing otherwise before AND after. So please, do tell. How we are “decimated” I would really love to know what players that we didn’t re-sign are better than average. Please enlighten us with your wisdom

So Vegas is the all knowing Oracle?? I’m not a huge D Mac fan but he can’t be worse than Favre last year. With all the stuff that went wrong last year I am suprised we squeezed out 6 wins. But that said, Leslie is a players coach, and they will respond a heck of alot better to him that the dictator that Chilly was. Sounds like the players will have more input and the scheme will be adjusted to fit the players. Instead of forcing players to fit the scheme. The D will be more aggressive as they were after Chilly got canned. And the boring dink n dunk Bevell offense is history too (have fun Seattle). It will be a heavy dose of AP and that is never a bad thing. 10 wins is well within reach. We’ll see. That’s why they play the games

False. This is a hackneyed, 100% false and completely outdated platitude. Anyone who knows how to read a wikipedia article knows that there is more to the Rams and Raiders leaving L.A. than poor fan support. Anyone who says otherwise is speaking out of Ignorance. There are at least twice as many people in the L.A. area than there are in the entire state of Minnesota, I’d say there are enough fans among the over 10,000,000 people here to support an NFL team easily.

I was eleven when the Rams and Raiders left So-Cal, and you can believe there are an entire generation of football fans here in L.A. just like me that have grown up without a team and have been dying for one for. Don’t blame the fans in L.A. for welcoming any franchise that is willing to come to a market that is hungry for a team, blame the ownership of your team and the voters of your state for not doing enough to keep your team, should it come to that.

    @ Fertacrit—

Wow…..you redefine the term, “stupid homer”.

    Here are some facts son:

    Sidney Rice is good.
    Ray Edwards is good.
Favre got killed last year because his OL sucked.
Donovan McNabb got benched in favor of Rex Grossman (that means he sucks too).

Reality my boy….you need a really good dose of it.

I don’t think he’s coming to MN. unless there is a severe falling out with the Cards. He himself said he enjoys it there. He said its difficult to go anywhere down there without getting a crowd around him. He said he likes coming home to mpls and no one recognizes him. he said he really appreciates his privacy when he comes home. these were his words in an interview i read about two weeks ago.

Of course there’s always a chance. but i think he stays with the cards

You do know that Fitz worked out with Kolb this off season too right? He has an offseason workout camp every year. (fun fact, the year Sidney Rice excelled in the NFL (09) was also the only year he worked out with Fitz at his camp. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/jim_trotter/07/16/wrs/index.html

There I fixed it for you, at least according to a poll done by SI with NFL players (least desirable team).

And judging by the free agents signed by Minnesota over the years your statement couldn’t be further from the truth.

What was said last yera by packer fans?

Sidney Rice sucks, one year wonder.
Ray Edwards sucks, how is that sack recoed working for you?
Favre sucks, hes too old and slow, that line is great and he can’t run.
Donavan McNabb to Washington is a great move.

Funny how all the Packers are great until they leave then they are “scraps for the Vikes.
It’s also funny how these players on the Vikes suck, until they leave, then they are good.

Packer fan mentality- it’s like arguing with a 3 year old.
Favre blows, you are the king of the idiots.

    Paul Hargis–

Glad to see you are back to talking football. After you made fun of the death of Max McGee, I figured you next were going to make light of 9/11 victims. Maybe you are growing as a person?

I don’t know why you are attributing those comments to me. Personally, I have known Sidney is a good WR ever since his breakout year. Ray Edwards is also a high quality end. Favre would have been much better last year if he would have had ANY protection. And I don’t know how you can be excited about an old QB who was benched in favor of Rex Grossman last year. Fact of the matter is this: The Vikes still have about 5-6 studs on their team…..Allen, Greenway, Winfield, Peterson, Harvin…… Their problem is they have so many totally crappy players….especially on OL and their secondary. That is why they suck. But you will never see me claiming the previously mentioned players are anything less than spectacular.

One other point about Favre…..Rodgers was clearly the better QB over the past three years. Favre had one good year…..Rodgers had three good years. And the truth of the matter is Thompson and McCarthy were sick of him and knew what they had in Rodgers. When Favre tried to come back….they didn’t want him. They told him he would not come back as the starter…..and knew with Brett’s ego, he would never then come back. In idiot (Paul Hargis) language…..they told him to go to hell. And how right were they moron?? World Champions again baby!! How sweet it is.

  91. paulharghis says: Aug 6, 2011 5:35 PM

Youblow says: BLah bla blah, Packers world champs , blah blah lah, Hargis is a idiot.

    STFU!

    Your whole fanbase is hypocritical.
You specifically were just called out for calling Joes”scraps” when it looked like he was a Viking, but now he is a packer he’s the best at his position.

Please come up with a post that does not have to include my name(to generate hits) and get some new material. Quit using mine also, I saw you felt the need to educate people on a post……I’d be happy to write for you.

I don’t care what you say, that Mcgee posting was hilarious. What was that old fool doing up there anyway?

You actually had a partially decent post, but a majority of it, in regards to the Vikings, you don’t believe. Quit trying to win a popularity contest on here, ok?

    Paul Hargis–

You just cannot stop showing off your ignorance and lack of basic human compassion. FYI—you idiot—Max McGee was suffering from advanced Alzheimer’s disease when he passed away. Yes, he was old, but he was no fool. He was the victim of a tragic disease that crippled his memory and eventually his basic congitive function. In some ways his death may have been a blessing for him and his family. For you though, it is a sick joke that somehow, amazingly is pleasing to you.

    Pretty sad.

Not my fault that you have a PC sense of humor.

Here’s a little secret. That post was meant to elicit just this type of response.

Yeah, I’m placing the blame on SOMEBODY.
Evidently this guy was so far gone mentally that he could hide his own easter eggs. How did someone let him on a ladder, let alone up on the roof?
Are you actually comparing a national tragedy to a guy falling off a roof? Seriously?!
I’m pretty sure I’ve schooled you enough times on here, that you would get the hint that football is not your forte. Yet you continue to obsess over a total stranger that is obviously your better.

Sorry, a guy with the screen name of favreblows is not going to be my moral compass.

It’s too bad you have no sense of humor, that isn’t my problem.
It’s time for you to move on. Your lame attempt at smearing me is making you look like a pathetic POS. Packer fans are not even defending your idiocy, shouldn’t that be telling you something?
