Raiders replace Zach Miller with Kevin Boss

Philadelphia Eagles vs New York Giants Getty Images

It didn’t take long for the Raiders to replace Zach Miller.

The team signed Kevin Boss, the next best free agent tight end available this offseason.  Adam Schefter reports Boss will get $16 million over four seasons.

Boss isn’t as good a receiver as Miller, but he’s a superior blocker.  Boss was a favorite of Eli Manning, who won’t be pleased when he hears this news.

The Raiders were over the salary cap before this deal, which is another reminder that money can always be pushed around.  Richard Seymour and Stanford Routt both restructured deals to open up cap room.

Oakland’s offensive line is a cause for concern. If Boss is a better blocker than Miller, who was very capable, that’s a big win. He may not be as good as Miller, but for considerably less money than Miller cost, it was the best option the Raiders had after Miller walked. Good move to not let Boss slip away too.

big loss to the giants… this was eli’s safety valve and his excellent blocking helped their running game tremendously. Their offense may see a decline this season. Glad the birds wont have to cover Boss this year…

Man id be so pissed right now if i was a giants fan. They have done NOTHING this offseason and now they lose the only good TE they had in Boss. They are probably at some point gonna lose Osi too and were over the cap as of a few days ago as Reese said on his wfan interview. Surprising to see this happen especially from the Giants.

Good luck Boss-man. Blows to see you go, but you did always want to be closer to home. you’ll be missed.

i also think its safe to say that for at least this upcoming season, the giants can pretty much get rid of any plays that involve throwing the ball to the TE…..unless of course bear pascoe is a LOT better than we know about. beckum could catch but he cant block. cant wait to see how the giants straighten this mess out.

  24. nittanylion0 says: Aug 5, 2011 12:00 PM

I’ll miss Boss, but I can’t fault the Giants for letting him walk, especially since he got 4/$16M from the free-spending Raiders. Boss makes great catches in traffic, but notoriously drops most of the easy passes that go right in his breadbasket. It’s almost like he needs an element of danger on every target to make the catch. Which is bad, because he’s injury prone and has a history of concussions. Also, he’s not a natural blocker, so that part of his game comes up short. That package is not worth that type of commitment. This will be a rough transition for the G-men at TE. I hope Travis Beckum is up to the task.

How can Raiders fans criticize the Giants for their Salary Cap? (The Giants weren’t over, as per yesterday’s PFT’s article regarding the amount of cap space teams had).

The Raiders were the highest in the league OVER the cap as of yesterday (something like $17 mil over).

That’s a lot of cash for so much mediocrity.

I am happy for Miller, and seahawks fans, they got what they wanted, and it looks like we got what we wanted for a whole lot less…….plus i’lll take boss’s 15 yrd avg per catch, vs miller 10.

Wow. But then again u deserve everything that’s happened this offseason for firing the guy the players played their @$$ off for (cable) then letting Nnamdi and Miller walk. Never thought I’d say this but Oakland is pushing Denver HARD for 4th in that division.

  45. jbl429 says: Aug 5, 2011 12:22 PM

That’s a shame. He wasn’t a game changer for the Giants, but mainly because Gillbride has no idea how to use a TE. He’ll probably be much better off in Oakland, at least from a stats perspective. Even though Eli didn’t target him much, he was a big target and a reliable one. Also a great team player as he always took a beating (probably more than anyone else on offense), and would quietly get back up and get back to the huddle. Never heard a complaint about him.

I’ll never forget his catch & run in the Superbowl. Besides the Manning to Tyree play, and Plax’s touchdown, it’s the other play (on offense) I always think about when I think of that Superbowl.

  50. snnyjcbs says: Aug 5, 2011 12:34 PM

Boss 16 TD’s in 3 years, Miller 12 TD’s in 4 years. Boss better blocker then Miller all while playing in an offence that did not use the TE as the main receiver like Oakland had to do.

My take, Boss ran Shockey out of Town and Oakland will not miss a beat at the TE position, will not miss a beat.

  51. raider13pdx says: Aug 5, 2011 12:38 PM

Why don’t all the Raiders haters look up Zach Millers injury proned track record. Concussion after after concussion, busted foot, etc. He’s lost what speed he had after the foot injury and nurses it while he plays. Boss should put up the same numbers or more as Campbells safety valve. And remember Zach was an alternate pro bowler so give me a break. Any TE in Oaklands system should have Zachs numbers when the receiving core struggles as bad as they do. Except Jacoby Ford of course.

So all the Raider Haters STFU! Worry about your own teams and know a little about players before you think you know what you’re talking about. Zach Miller isn’t and never will be a Tony Gonzalez, or Antonio Gates. Especially in Seattle.

I remember watching the draft, where Campbell’s rights were traded to Oakland & the “experts” were praising it like Campbell was some kind of steal for the Raiders. They acted like he wasn’t a major bust for the Redskins.

Without a quality QB it doesn’t matter who they have on offense. Campbell wasn’t good in Washington & he isn’t good for Oakland.

Why is something so obvious to everybody else not so obvious to the people running the team?

  61. wcman says: Aug 5, 2011 12:58 PM

LOL the Raider haters crack me up. Boss is almost a carbon copy of Miller in size, can catch the ball and get down field, is a better blocker and is going to cost about 3 mill less per season…but it’s a terrible deal for the Raiders? Get real. The Raiders actually come out of this better than if they had signed Miller due to the difference in money alone. Boss doesn’t have as many catches as Miller did, but averaged more per catch, had more TD’s and wasn’t a featured component like Miller was in Oakland. I know it’s hard haters, but you are going to have to accept that the Raiders just made a great move. Deal with it.

You do realize that they could have restructered contracts last week like other teams (Cardinals) to get under the cap. However, the players who restructered weren’t able to practice until yesterday after the new CBA was signed. That’s why 25 Cardinals practiced for the first time yesterday afternoon.

The old guy is losing it and ocassionally makes some bad decisions.. but he hasn’t lost it all.

Actually, Boss was an alternate probowler himself in 2008….. People think that Miller is a better receiver because they see more coverage of the East Coast bias teams… but they don’t realize that just like Boss, he’s injury prone to a point, and does drop some easily catchable balls…. I agree with the above.. the Raiders won’t skip a beat at the TE position.. if anything, they got a better blocker to help shore up the shaky offensive line…

Truthfully? Because he’s 30 years old.. always misses at least 2 to 3 games a year.. and last year, while the Raiders still had a chance at the playoffs, he decided to sit and not play instead of taking a shot and trying to tough it out and play.. that didn’t sit well with the old man…. Also, if you check Stats LLC, Routt actually had a better denied percentage than both Aso and Revis, and he was thrown at 3 times as much as those 2….

It’s funny how each player was great to their respective teams one day, and as soon as they leave they became bums. Yes, the Raiders WILL miss Zach Miller, but Boss has very similar production and cost a lot less money. And yes the Giants WILL miss Kevin Boss, but their passing game is miles ahead of the Raiders (and among the best in the NFL), and they have some good young TE’s to help fill the void. Boss will immediately become a higher priority in the Raiders’ offense, and Zach Miller will become a lot less of one in Seattle, but both will be solid contributors to their respective teams. Overall, I wish each of them well with their new teams.

In the end, the NFL is a business, and everyone involved did what they needed to do to get what or who they felt they deserved or needed.

Nnamdi is a great player, but the Eagles way overpaid him. Al overpaid when he was in his prime. I really thought that fact would keep Nnamdi loyal but for all the niceties thrown his way he’s plain money hungry. He doesn’t make the int’s he should ( don’t fall for the lack of throws debate) He misses plenty. I also noticed an increase in interference penalties and grabbing. He is slowing down now for sure. A great capable player but never was a game changer. After watching Haynes in his prime and Lester Hayes even Woodson he isn’t superstar caliber. Don’t see it happening in Philly either…………

It amazes me how people can just type post like, “Raiders should of kept Nnamdi…Raiders should kept Miller”…without thinking. I’m sure these people know the GAME of football like; what’s a first down; what’s an interception; how many points is a touchdown (please don’t say 7pts)? But apparently, these people don’t know the BUSINESS of football. I’ll leave it at that…

If he was as good as he thinks he would still be in NJ
He gets hurt alot and his catches are not what they once were

Its the Giants they know what they are doing look at the Eli deal they won it all the Chargers won nothing

Osi is another story he does not stay healthy and if you start redoing contracts with two years left where does it end
They will let him sit and watch and sooner or latter they will get what they want for him
Again this is the Giants they know how to manage a team and the CAP

Seeing Boss in action this season will be the only way to get over the loss of Zach. While its still gut wrenching, remember its a business and since Nnamdi was handed his hat stay focused on whos playin now for the team. Hold your head up!

I am not a Raiders fan, but I like the Boss pick-up. The 16mil thing I was talking about was directly from a Adam Schefter Tweet two days ago. I do not care to look into player salaries, I just saw that and my eyes buldged. Im glad that isnt the case because although he is good, I dont think he is 16mil good.

Hated hated to see Miller go to the Emerald City but I think Boss will be a more than capable replacement. Miller was a pass catching machine no doubt but don’t sleep on Boss. Or should I say, please opposing defenses, don’t worry ’bout Boss cause he’s only in to block (which he is good at). *wink wink*

Great value pick up. And if you don’t think so, you’re just a Hater. Which is fine cause I love all the Raider Haters. Makes it so much sweeter when they beat your team. Especially the DisChargers, Donkeys and Quiefs.

Win, lose, or tie…Raiders ’til I die!

Glad to see Boss on board, but it hardly makes up for he long long list of stupid moves by Al this year and over the past few years. Letting two Pro Bowl players get away is NOT the way to build a winning team….and hearing Hue Jackson call Al “Coach Davis” and talk about winning Super Bowls scares the crap out of me because this sounds like Joe Bugel all over again.

@crise4og: Love the post. Im an Eagles fan and we are getting a lot of haters this year too. Real football fans respect the passion by other teams fans (outside of their division).

don’t forget Metallica a band that would perform for free before games at the Oak town Colosseum.

and before anyone says “use to” the only reason they don’t do it anymore is because the county passed a law prohibiting it.

The term Raider Nation was to unite the Raider fans in southern CA with the northern CA fans, most fans don’t even live in Oakland.

@jacksaysfu says: I’m an Eagles fan and I’m thrilled we got Asomugha but I’m curious, why didn’t OAK try harder to keep him? Can a Raiders fan let me know? PS good job getting Boss.
    ##############################
Harder then what? He was paid a kings ransom the past 2 years. He signed the richest contract in NFL history in 2009. He made about 14M the past two seasons (more than he is making with the Eagles). He was scheduled to make over 16.8M this season or the average of the 6 highest paid QB’s in the NFL whichever was greater it would have been more than 16.8 for sure. The cap is what 120M? He signed a discounted salary to play with the Eagles. I don’t blame him. He wants to win a title like Woodson but don’t blame the Raiders for using some common sense, for a change, and not paying a 30 year old DB Tom Brady money. He was bar far my favorite Raider. He’s great but he doesn’t effect the game like Brady, Manning, Brees, Rivers, Rogers so why pay him like he does.

  86. xivraider says: Aug 5, 2011 7:29 PM

    @JackSaysFU

He’s a great CB he just didn’t want to be in Oakland anymore he’s no charles woodson that’ll bring swagger & hype before every play( I still miss C.Woodson)but he’ll keep his side on lock about the INT’s he’s just not a gambler he’s a very technical player who doesn’t bait much he might not get many pics but he won’t get beat(by 5 yards & stumbling)as often as a gambler will plus the the raiders play Man2Man there’s not as many opportunities for INT’s

the big boss man comes to the dark side!
Boss is 1000000 times better than miller

  89. marcsasharc says: Aug 9, 2011 12:32 AM

i love how delusional raider fans are. i really do. Asomugha was never overpaid by Al Davis. ever. and if you think so, clearly you dont know the game of football or check any cornerback statistics worth mentioning. its funny too because every time ive argued how amazing Asomugha was/is, ive gotten lame stats in response. check REAL STATS that actually say something about a CBs worth. not INTs and tackles, idiots.

Miller and Boss are not the same. sure Boss is effective but he isnt nearly as good a receiver as Miller. not now, not never.

its mind boggling how most raider fans drink from the the kool aid. you lost 2 of your top 5 players, havent added any players to suggest the team got better, yet i hear not just playoff talk but deep in the playoffs talk?

    haha get a life.

  90. marcsasharc says: Aug 9, 2011 12:50 AM

the most catches Boss ever had in 1 season was 42. that comes out to less than 3 catches a game with a superior QB than what Oakland has.

in fact, Zach Miller’s worst year was better than Boss’ best year.

it isnt that Boss sucks, hes just not as quality of a player. and before somebody uses blocking as an argument, millers blocking was not an issue and the raiders run game as a whole wasnt either. non issue.

  91. ch8878 says: Aug 9, 2011 8:09 PM

Great move best move by the Raiders in a long time, you lose a 1 year wonder ( Miller ) with a Super Bowl Champ ( Boss ) who can catch and is maybe the best blocking tight end in the league great move !!
