Rob Ryan: My family talks, but we back it up

The Brothers Ryan Football AP

With his vow to “whip the ass” of “the all-hype team,” Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has threatened to top his brother, Jets head coach Rex Ryan, as the NFL’s brashest coach. But Rob says his family has proven that it can do more than just talk.

Rob Ryan told NFL Network’s Albert Breer that he, his brother, and their dad, former NFL coach Buddy Ryan, can talk tough because they are tough.

“You can’t talk noise if you don’t have the players to back it up,” Ryan said. “We always walk the walk. Anybody that knows a Ryan knows they walk the walk. We don’t talk the talk, we walk it. Our guys are gonna be good, and we know it. So that ain’t talkin’. That’s just the [bleepin’] way it is.”

Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said Ryan is bringing exactly the kind of attitude the team needs, and comments like the “all-hype team” dig at the Eagles are just part of his personality.

“I laughed. I thought it was in good fun. It was competitive, and that doesn’t bother me a bit,” Jones said. “That’s part of what you get, when you get Rob. He’s got that type of personality. First of all, he’s a brilliant football guy, but he’s also very competitive, he’s gregarious and that’s good. That’s what you’re going to get, and it’s what we wanted.”

So far, the Cowboys’ fans seem to agree that Ryan was a good addition to the coaching staff. Just as long as his defense backs up his talk.

That is true when your family lives in the fantasy world known as Ryan-ville.

You know, where the Jets have won the superbowl 3 times now in the last three years concluding with a blow-out of Green Bay last year.

  6. wydok says: Aug 5, 2011 1:28 PM

Except the only one of you that won a Super Bowl was your dad, and that was only when he was the DC for Chicago.

The only problem is that while Rex has backed up his talk by having two successful seasons, Rob really hasn’t tasted real success in the NFL.

  11. mvp43 says: Aug 5, 2011 1:30 PM

    Umm,

Don’t you need to actually win something first in order to walk the walk?

    just wondering…

“We don’t talk the talk, we walk it. Our guys are gonna be good, and we know it…”

Uh, that’s talk. There is no “walk” until season starts. But it’s probably good for the brand and getting butts in stadium seats.

  13. scoops1 says: Aug 5, 2011 1:30 PM

Sorry but your bro couldn’t back up the talk the last 2 years and he will be 0-3 after this season

  15. kellyb9 says: Aug 5, 2011 1:30 PM

When? When have they ever backed up anything they’ve said? Yeah, so Rex beat the Patriots once in an important game. They’ve never won the division, they’ve never won the AFC Championship, and they’ve never won the Super Bowl. And Rob… well Rob’s just riding on Rex’s coat tails.

  21. eaglesfootballfan says: Aug 5, 2011 1:32 PM

  32. t16rich says: Aug 5, 2011 1:35 PM

Should say “my family talks. Rex backs it up.” What has Rob Ryan ever done in this league to say he backs up his talk? Nothing. His defenses finished 3rd or 4th in the AFC North. Time to shut up until you prove it Rob.

  33. scorpiodsu says: Aug 5, 2011 1:35 PM

It’s funny that he refers to the Eagles as the “all hype team” given the team that he’s working for. They are the definition of “all hype”. At least Rex has had some success and Buddy was a good defensive mind but he didn’t win any playoff games when he was doing all the talking. So he can define “walking the walk” as merely by winning a regular season matchup. You haven’t really “walked the walk” until you’ve done something worthwhile. Until then, you just think you “walked the walk”. I can’t wait until we kick their asses twice this year.

  34. qdog112 says: Aug 5, 2011 1:35 PM

  37. wryly1 says: Aug 5, 2011 1:36 PM

Um, Rob – you’re the only coach in your family who HASDN’T ‘backed it up’. Your defenses in Oakland and Cleveland sucked. Nor is there any tangible reason your Cowboy’s defense will be significantly improved this season. You won’t have to tell us when you get it done because we’ll be watching.

  38. bolt4life says: Aug 5, 2011 1:37 PM

The only problem is that while Rex has backed up his talk by having two successful seasons, Rob really hasn’t tasted real success in the NFL.

    ————————————————–

    2 successful seasons?

Coaches who have won the Super Bowl don’t talk smack and say they are going to win the Super Bowl.

Coaches who have NOT won the Super Bowl REALLY don’t talk smack and say they are going to win the Super Bowl.

The guy is a joke. If he is “successful”, then Andy Reid is king of fairy dream “successful” land.

  40. eaglebobby says: Aug 5, 2011 1:39 PM

Yeah, they can back it up–I still remember when Buddy circled Soldier Field with the team buses in ’88 with the Eagles–then they lost to the Bears in the Fog Bowl.

  41. jpb12 says: Aug 5, 2011 1:39 PM

This guy is perfect for Dallas. Not shy. All mouth. Gut to back it up.

Not sure what he means by walking the walk. I guess he was the head water boy in New England for one of those super bowls. Not sure when he’s ‘won’ otherwise. Maybe we need to redefine winning… as meaning pretty good?

  42. nyjalleffingday says: Aug 5, 2011 1:39 PM

I’m not even sure why he’s saying this. Buddy was only a good coordinator, and Rob isn’t even that. The only one to taste HC success is Rex.

    Rex Ryan is best Ryan!

  43. tdprog1 says: Aug 5, 2011 1:40 PM

  45. mempusa says: Aug 5, 2011 1:42 PM

  46. mksnpcola says: Aug 5, 2011 1:43 PM

As someone said above, best assistant coaching family tree.

  50. bleedgreen says: Aug 5, 2011 1:45 PM

Why did no one point out to Rob that his defense has never finished above 20th in the NFL? He gets a LOT of credit for being in the bottom half of his profession his entire career.

  51. upperdecker19 says: Aug 5, 2011 1:46 PM

By “back it up”, he means “back into the buffet line”.

  52. hobartbaker says: Aug 5, 2011 1:46 PM

Rhinocerous Rob and Tyrannasaurus Rex aren’t talking out of their asses.

Even if it looks, sounds, and smells like it.

  53. fwippel says: Aug 5, 2011 1:48 PM

Buddy Ryan backed up it? With what? His only real success backing up his talk was in Chicago as D-coordinator under Ditka.

Elsewhere, Buddy didn’t do all that much. He didn’t win a playoff game in Philadelphia, and in fact, lost playoff games he should have won. His only ‘success’ as D-coordinator in Houston was attempting to punch out Kevin Gilbride, conveniently forgetting his defense’s meltdown in the playoffs against the Chiefs and Joe Montana.

Then he lands the Arizona job, which promptly led to the end of his coaching career. Sounds more like a downhill slide than a success story.

Sure, lots of good coaches never win Super Bowls. Only a few of them act like the south end of a north bound moose in the process, and Buddy Ryan and his sons are at the head of that class.

  54. faderoute says: Aug 5, 2011 1:49 PM

Please. He wouldn’t even call the Eagles out by name. There were were people who thought he was talking about the Jets.

If you’re gonna trash talk at least have the balls to direct it at somebody specifically.

  55. rc33 says: Aug 5, 2011 1:49 PM

I don’t really care that the Ryan’s run smack. Whatever. They can do what they want, it’s their reputation when they end up not getting the job done.
But what’s with the “but we back it up” stuff?

“We”…as in neither of you fat asses…back up anything. Your players do.
Backing it up implies that you personally are doing something about it.
Instructing doesn’t count, shouldn’t count and never will count towards “backing it up.”

  56. jacksaysfu says: Aug 5, 2011 1:49 PM

His Defenses have always been average. You Cowgirls will be lucky to finish ahead of the Skins. Look at Clev.D last year, AVERAGE AT BEST. 80. bozosforall says: Aug 5, 2011 2:44 PM

Let’s set the record straight, particularly for the ignorant Pats fans here who hide behind Belichick’s three tainted Spygate Super Bowl rings to take potshots at the Ryans.

Buddy has won TWO Super Bowl rings, one as a DC for the Bears and the second as the DC for the Jets in Super Bowl III.

Rex has won ONE Super Bowl ring as the DL coach for the Baltimore Ravens in 2001.

Rob has won TWO Super Bowl rings, both as the LB coach for the Pats (though I guess those don’t count either since they are as tainted as Belichick’s rings). LOL

Take away the tainted rings and the Ryans have three SB rings versus two for Belichick. Add them back in and it’s a 5-5 tie.

And the record is now set straight.

It has nothing to do with the Cowboys . Ass’t coaches, including coordinators, weren’t mandated to have media availability until 06 I think. After that I do remember his making a few comments @ Oak and his pressers in Cle were must see tv. They’re just not heavily televised teams that the media love like Dall is, so it’s not as known. This guy is an idiot. Can anyone site one example of anything any member of the Ryan family has guaranteed (regarding the NFL) that has come to fruition? I’m old enough to remember when your daddy coached my team (Eagles) and, though he built what may have been the most talented team in the NFL back then, he did not win even a single playoff game. And if the team’s talented and still can’t win, then who do you blame?

The ONLY thing the Ryan’s can guarantee is that they will run their mouths and have nothing ever to show for it.

  92. rickycubane says: Aug 5, 2011 3:13 PM

i like the Ryans .. in defense of Buddy he would have won a championship in philly if Norman Brayman wasnt the owner.. Buddy never called him by his name.. he hated him.. and in press confrences he would refer to Norman Brayman as “the guy in france” he had the best defense in the history of the NFL that never won a championship.. im not saying this as an Eagles fan but as an objective Football fan.. so because i first became an eagles fan when Buddy was the coach i will always have a special place in my heart for him i was only a little kid…

I like Rob and Rex and did wish they were coaching my teams in some capacity.. but not as head coaches.. and even tho Andy Ried seems he will never ever be able to get over the hump and win a title as much as i wish it was true.. i know he is a better teacher than Rex as a head coach.. Andy is the best QB coach in the history of the NFL.. he might not be able to ever be anything better than a good head coach who could never win the title just like Jeff Fisher types.. but im hoping he is the Cowher type

Unfortunately, the Jets have already won the Super bowl so Bob can’t claim it this year.

It’s a good think that being tough allows the talk and winning what they claim is not important!

It’s pretty sad, I only see you comment on post about the Patriots or a Jets post where you may see something from a Pats fan.
Again needlessly attacking but I never see comments from you anywhere els.

Just to play the devil’s advocate, for all of those saying that neither Rex nor Buddy have ever done anything:

Rex won a ring with Baltimore as a DL couch.
Rob won two with New England as the LB coach

I think that without a doubt, the two are brash loudmouths, but I also think that both the Jets and Cowboys needed some attitude in their clubs. the prior regime in each case was not getting the job done, and in both cases, an attitude adjustment was needed.

Are the over the top? I guess that depends on your personal preferences. I for one think it’s funny, sort of along the lines of Dennis Green’s outburst in Arizona; you just never know what the hell they will say next.

  105. j0esixpack says: Aug 5, 2011 4:21 PM

    Rob Ryan is right.

Rex Ryan talks like a guy who is all show and no go – promising he’d win the Super Bowl in 2010.

He backed it up, and proved he was all show and no go by failing to even make the Super Bowl, let alone win it.

The amount of simple-minded Eagle fans here trashing the Ryans is really hilarious.

They call them fat when they have a coach that is just as effing fat.

They want to talk about “backing it up” & trash others when no fans in the NFL talk more sh*t than Eagle fans.

When Buddy was their coach, he was beloved. Now they trash him also & Eagle fans claim to be sooo loyal.

The last Eagle championship was 51 years ago but they want to call others out on how many rings they have. Then when it swings back around to the Eagles having no SB rings, they tell other fans how their championships are in the past.

The Ryans may like to talk but people now lauding Reid wanted his head for the last few years. And Buddy was a MUCH BETTER father than Reid ever was, you don’t see the Ryan boys in jail for dealing drugs & hiding drugs in their a**es.

The Ryans do not employ ex-cons that are infamous for torturing bleeding crying animals in some of the most inhumane ways possible & that infected unsuspecting women with incurable diseases.

Eagle fans are too busy talking themselves to see what a mess their own house is. But want to give other people a hard time for talking as well.

The Eagles will fall on their face again this year & when the dust settles, will have cap issues much like the 49ers had in the 90’s. It’s gonna be soooo much fun to watch this franchise fall apart in a year or 2 based upon the silly moves they made this year & the way their fans will cry big alligator tears when it happens. It couldn’t happen to a nicer franchise, to a nicer city or to nicer fans.

that the lemmings rise to the bait every time rex or rob tosses one of these out….. always amazes me.

all the ryans talk is calculated to put the pressure on themselves and take it off the players. they take the bullets and allow the defense to learn their job and play with abandon.

it doesn’t make everything they say as they do this the truth. remember when buddy was going to go 8-0 in the nfc east his first year with the eagles? now buddy wasn’t a fool and didn’t really think the eagles were going to beat the giants redskins and cowboys twice each that year.

so, woof woof, rob. you ain’t shaking anyone up in philly. we already had the original, not the third in the line. and you wanted nnamdi so bad you could taste it (and make jerry’s eyes water).

Fat jokes and foot jokes. HAHAHAHA you guys are all so funny and so original.

I love how most of the clowns on here were saying last year at this time on this site how the Jets were going 6-10 and 7-9. I read it over and over again. How’d that go? Now its Rex can’t win the super bowl. Where are the 6-10 predictions? How the hatred standards have been risen. Rex has walked the walk by getting this team into a consistent winner, which eventually will lead to a Super Bowl. You get to the playoffs enough it’ll happen. That’s what you want. Get caught up in his predictions if that helps fuel your hatred but that’s all for show, all about taking pressure off his team. No one talks about the players, because its all focused on Rex. Do you see the method to his madness now? Ahhh, the light bulb just went off on a few dozen pinheads.

“There isn’t any structure there that this court can depend upon. I’m saying this is a family in crisis. It sounds more or less like a drug emporium there, with the drugs all over the house, and you’re an addict” – Montgomery County Judge Steven O’Neill to Britt Reid, after noting that all manner of illegal and prescription drugs were found throughout Andy Reid’s house.

Buddy never called him by his name.. he hated him.. and in press confrences he would refer to Norman Brayman as “the guy in france” he had the best defense in the history of the NFL that never won a championship..

    ———————————————————————

Get real. The Eagles never even had better than the 8th ranked defense while Buddy Ryan was coach. He never even had the top defense in the division.

  117. macjacmccoy says: Aug 7, 2011 12:13 AM

Sorry Packers and Saints players you heard Rob Ryan his family always talks the talk and walks the walks and backs what they say up and thats just the way it is.

So I guess your teams didnt win the SuperBowl the last 2 years bc a Ryan claimed his team was going to win it and they always back up what they say and walk the walk bc they have the players to do it.

So the Jets had to have won the superbowl the last 2 years. We must have all just been confused then.

Whats this mean then? The Jets are gonna 3 peat this year? I mean Rex Ryan already claimed again this year that his team was gonna win the SuperBowl. So it must be a 3 peat then.

Wow they are a better dynasty then the Pats i took them 4 years to win 3 SuperBowls the Jets did it in 3.

    Amazing. J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS.

    @melonnhead,

Are you so thoroughly delusional/paranoid that you think anyone who criticizes the Jets/Ryans is an Eagles fan? I hate the Eagles as much, if not more. What makes the Ryans pervs is not what they do in their private lives, it’s the fact that anyone outside of their homes knows about it.

  119. bcgreg says: Aug 10, 2011 9:25 AM

Rob Ryan won rings as a coach for the Patriots in 2001 and 2003.
Rex Ryan won a ring in Baltimore in 2000.
Buddy also coached in the SB with the Jets in ’68 and the Vikings in ’76.

I’m no Ryan family fan, but you are incorrect.

Actually, the answer to your question rhymes with bive. (see my previous post–The Vikings lost in ’76, so the answer is not six).

You folks are confusing if the Ryans have had coaching success versus HEAD coaching success. These 3 men are talented football coaches. They’re a-holes. But, that doesn’t mean they don’t know their stuff.

You asked how many rings do the Ryans have not how many they have as head coaches. The answer is 5.

Typical lack of research by a Pats idiot. Buddy Ryan got a ring with the Bears in ’85 (the easiest one to remember of the SIX SB rings that the Ryans collectively possess).

Then again, my earlier post completely clarified this, yet hater Pats fans continue to ignorantly “thumbs down” the post, regardless of the fact that it was factually accurate. Hate on idiot Pats fans.

  123. bcgreg says: Aug 10, 2011 9:29 PM

    @ bozoforall

Buddy Ryan has 2 (one with the ’68 Jets and one with the ’85 Bears). He was also a coach on the ’76 Vikings, who lost the SB.

Rob Ryan has 2 rings from the Pats in 2001 and 2003

Rex has one from the 2000 Ravens

So, 2 for Buddy, 2 for Rob, one for Rex. That equals five, you mathematical genius.

Like with the Moss-Rice thread, why don’t you read someone else’s posts completely before you try to shoot them down. jjrs said the answer rhymes with bero.
