Vick talks contract, Rob Ryan, DeSean Jackson

Michael Vick AP

Eagles quarterback Mike Vick joined Mike Missanelli of 97.5 the Fanatic in Philly on Friday, and Vick talked about a couple of items of particular concern to Eagles fans.

He said he welcomes the hype and the attention that comes from adding a bunch of players, in part because “teams are always gonna try to get me.”  But as it relates to the comments of Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who said the Cowboys will “beat [the] ass” of the “all-hype team,” Vick said “I was mad about that,” adding that the comments in his view were “inappropriate.”

“We don’t talk,” Vick said.  “We got about our business the right way.  And, you know, maybe we’ll make him eat his words.”  (Some would say that Ryan eats pretty much everything else.)

Vick also predicted that receiver DeSean Jackson will “make the right decision” when it comes to showing up by August 9 in order to get a year of credit toward free agency.  (Then again, Vick said he called Jackson Thursday, but DeSean didn’t “make the right decision” to call back.)  Vick also strongly implied that he has been advising Jackson to return to camp.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Vick reluctantly confirmed something we reported late last week — that the Eagles already are talking to Vick about a long-term contract.  “I wanna be here,” Vick said.  “I wanna play for Andy [Reid] through the rest of my career.”

Overall, Vick sounds loose and confident and ready to have another good season.  If talks go well, it’ll be the first of many more.

The Vick deal has to happen in order to get comfortably under the cap to be able to extend Jackson’s deal. Hopefully Desean will realize that and show up to camp because the Eagles made it clear that they don’t negotiate with players during a holdout

Cue the hundred or more comments from rival fans, flocking to another Eagles thread with false bravado and insults towards the city of Philadelphia (not to mention extremely classy wishes that players get season-ending injuries).

You might get called haters, but everyone in Philly knows it’s not hate that motivates you to do these things. It’s fear.

  5. cokewithrealsugar says: Aug 5, 2011 4:56 PM

Extending Vick’s deal seems like a precursor to Desean getting his contract extended. Provided that Desean shows up to camp. The salary cap would be in much better shape with Vick restructuring.

We as in “we, except VY and D-Jack”. Vick’s trying to take the high road but he already fails to understand the Ryans. Ugh.

I’m most looking forward to Rob Ryan getting Brooking super-juiced up for the Eagles games, that should give some great footage.

Not from Vick. VY has always had a big mouth, but since he made that comment luckily someone realized they need to keep him quiet.

Vick has actually been a pretty humble person since he’s been on the Eagles.

  14. woodyg says: Aug 5, 2011 5:12 PM

Don’t expect Vick to carry over his 2010 numbers to 2011 …… His performance in 2011 will more closely match his career numbers ……. His career QB Rating is a paltry 80.2 ….. The Feagles will hardly be a “Dream Team” with a QB at 80.2 …… There’s also much doubt as to Vick’s ability to stay uninjuried …… He’s only played in all 16 once in his 8 years …… I can see the Feagles trying to secure a wildcard with V. Young at the helm or maybe even that Kafka kid …….

The Feagle Fans don’t know it yet but it could be a long & unsuccessful season without some luck on their side …….

Quick Question ……. How does one determine that this is an Eagles thread?? …….

Not a Cowboy fan, not a Ryan Bros fan, etc.

I’m a huge Vick fan and love how he’s stayed humble, has consistently been involved with the humane society since his arrest and fall from grace, and how he played the game amazingly last year.

That being said, he had to understand that adding the talent they just did instantly put a target on their backs, especially from rivals in their division. And please don’t act, also, like the Eagles don’t talk as well. Maybe Vick doesn’t, but Desean Jackson talks enough for the entire team. His on field celebrations are also going to get him killed someday. He’s a great talent, and he is fun to watch, but when you act like that and talk like that, it’s hard to take anybody seriously from the same team when they say they don’t talk. Also, hard to take his request for a new contract seriously when the idiot went out this summer and posted pics of his 25K receipt on twitter after partying.

  19. donlou52 says: Aug 5, 2011 5:16 PM

@FillyFan9988….and your city is a baseball city until Andy Reid is gone.

As a Dallas fan, I of course hate Vick. But someone up above said it right in that Vick has been very humble and very classy since his return. VY, on the other hand, is already causing nonsense. You guys are the new circus in the NFC east…big hype, big expectations. Just like Dallas was for a long time. Enjoy the hype, but keep the reciept.

  20. ICDogg says: Aug 5, 2011 5:17 PM

    As a Packer fan,

I’d like to thank the Eagles and their fans from the bottom of my heart. See, you’ve taken that big target that comes from actually winning a Superbowl off my team’s back and put it squarely on your back. Oh, and you’ve given the Packers some extra motivation to repeat. Word is that the Packers are sick of hearing all the Eagle hype already….

Call me a “hater” if you will (Eagles fans seem to have such a big persecution complex….) – but its the truth – you are now the hunted and not the hunter. Good luck with that. Every week is now the superbowl for your opponents.

  22. packersareandwillalwaysbebetterthanthebears says: Aug 5, 2011 5:19 PM

Although Michael Vick had a great overall season last year, I’d be worried if I was an Eagles fan.

In the 13 games he did play, he was great but looking closer is where it gets bad. In his first 7 games he was amazing, not throwing one pick and the Eagles were 5-2, but in his last 6, he threw at least one interception a game the Eagles were only 3-3. What’s worse is that in his last 3 games he failed to get over a 60% completion percentage in each game and the Eagles were 1-2.

Even though he was still okay in those games and not absolutely horrible, he wasn’t close to what he needs to be for the Eagles to win in the playoffs. Alas, his average performances could have been due to other things, but it also could have been caused by teams being able to scheme against him right.

  23. section731 says: Aug 5, 2011 5:21 PM

I say keep Vick on one year deals. I don’t trust that he won’t start leaving the DVDs in his car like he did to Jim Mora if he gets comfortable. If you noticed last year when all of the hype started about him being back – his play dipped – he held the ball longer and couldn’t find the open man. I think he stopped studying. He doesn’t have the discipline to do it without a big carrot or stick out there.

  24. philly4lyfe says: Aug 5, 2011 5:24 PM

We are going to make that 60 point loss we handed them a few years back look like a day at the beach compared to this year.

” You might get called haters, but everyone in Philly knows it’s not hate that motivates you to do these things. It’s fear. ”

The Feagles have been in the NFL for 78 years & these are the numbers …… Can’t see anything to fear here …..

    Regular Season Record (all-time) : 509-541-26
Playoff Record (all-time) : 19-20 (Last appearance after 2010 season)
Super Bowls Won: 0 out of 2 appearances

  26. sieg1234 says: Aug 5, 2011 5:25 PM

How can one say we don’t talk, meaning the Eagles, when that’s all they do? The Eagles are one of the most underachieving teams in the last 10 years easily, all this talent (especially defensively) and what do they have to show? A 1-3 record in the NFC Champ game (when the NFC was a joke might I add)? A 0-1 record in the SB? They are the Colts of the NFC, a great regular season team, wins a few games in the playoffs, but should be competing more often given their talent. This year will not be any different. The self proclaimed “Dream Team” (yeah they don’t talk) is an absolute joke. Samuel is already disgruntled. DRC is a headcase, has no football IQ, and while a spectacular athlete there is no telling how he will play. Vick will NOT repeat last yrs numbers in no way. Vince Young is about as bad of a QB as I’ve ever seen. Nnamdi has regressed each of the last 3 years, and while still great it’s ridiculous to hand him that contract at age 30. The DL did get much, much, much better and that should be their strong point without a doubt. Oh, and Desean Jackson sucks.

“We don’t talk,” Vick said. ”

So where did the Dream Team comment come from, genius?

First never end a sentence with a sarcastic “genius” when your saying something that is factually incorrect.

See your making it seem as if Vince Young was at the podium all by him self saying “yo this is the greatest team ever, We the dream team. We ain’t gonna lose a game”

The TRUTH (as not reported by this site, though it would be nice if they did) is that a reporter asked what its like to be in Philly now and what Vince thought of all the signings in one day. Now I will agree that Vince made a mistake by saying what he said next, but if you look at the VIDEO clearly Vince was making a joke. He laughs smiles then says “yeah its a dream team” thats what you hear in the media (and on this site even though the people here know the truth. But hey why mess with a fake narrative for the truth ) because what happened next was Vince making it clear what he just said was a joke got more serious and discussed the new players and how hard they would have to work and how happy he was to be here. In fact it was one of the better interviews VY has done. I think he gets he has a shot to remake himself here and really learn to play QB in the NFL.

But of course the media makes it something its not. So in reality, the Eagles have been 99% humble and talking about getting work and hard work and how tough its going to be and even the owner of the team is saying the PAckers are the real dream team because they are the champs. But yet ONE guy makes ONE JOKE and thats meme the entire training camp.

So “genius” I know your not going to understand the truth because americans can only understand sound bites and slogans. + its been beat into your head on this site and others that the Eagles think they are the dream team. And even though its not true at all and in 5 seconds you could go on google and watch the video of VY yourself but you won’t. Your American. You have more important things to do like talking crap on the internet. And thats every americans god given right.

At this point that is the last time i will explain that. It would be nice to see the people that run this site to do the right thing. This is a widely read site and since they have been pushing the fake meme that they KNOW is fake. It would be nice if even in sports report something had even the smallest bit of integrity.

Well, Vick is the expert on what’s inappropriate, so we can defer to his long experience with the subject.

As for him having “another good season” – by that you mean, flaming out early in the playoffs after just barely managing to scrape out winning a division over three other teams that were massively hobbled? Only beating the Romo-less Cowboys by 3 points? Not making it as far as the Bears in the post-season?

I’d say that’s a plausible target for this year. Though I expect the Giants and Cowboys will have a lot more to say about it than they did last year.

    Another year slower, Vick…

    _________________________________________________
It came from Vince Young, Idiot Boy who, after being signed, responded to a reporter’s question and reflected his exuberance at being signed by the Eagles. It should be noted, this was only a day or so after his signing, therefore, Vince Young was not vetted (noun:
One who has had long experience in a given activity or capacity: old hand, VETERAN. Informal old-timer. See ability/inability, knowledge/ignorance.) as an Eagle and did not speak for the Eagles in that capacity but only expressed his OWN opinion as he saw it. Of course, the media and Cowboy fans saw fit to grasp this thin straw in order to make themselves feel a little better after losing the Nnamdi Asomugha tug of war.

Quit hanging from Ryan Grant’s dang a lang. We get ESPN here in Philly and heard the same stupid crap from Grant to champ.

How many teams have repeated as champs again? There have been MUCH BETTER teams than yours that have failed to do so. Hunter/hunted, whatever you want to call yourselves, you will NOT repeat. Even if you can beat the Eagles, which is unlikely, you aren’t going to repeat.

I am a Dallas Fan, and I have always said it is the 4skins that will be the bottom dwellers of the NFC East. Now, having said that, it doesn’t really matter how many NFC East Titles you have if you don’t win a SB. The Bills have 7 AFC East Titles – does that carry any weight? No, they are only credited for losing 4 SB’s in a row.

So, Have your Eagles win it and shut all of the critics and Non-Eagle fans up. If the Eagles don’t win it all, don’t be surprised to have the “dream team” title thrown in your face for years, just like the “America’s team” title (although that wasn’t quoted from a player on the Cowboys)

As a Dallas fan, I agree the Eagles should be good. How it translates is yet to be seen, but if you don’t win it all, it will be a huge disappointment, and probably more so than any other year given the talent on the team.

    ================================

wow man.. this is stupidity on a whole nother level..

you can scream all day about how the Eagles havent won a super bowl.. because its simply something no Eagles fan can dispute..

90 percent of Eagles fans are fed up with Andy Reid.. the guy has has 13 years to win it and he hasnt..

Reid, dispite his inability to Win when it truly matters still has the best winning percentage in the league last time i checked as a head coach, he is one of the greatest teachers of QBs the game has ever seen.. that being said it still means he is a loser

The Eagles as an organization top to bottom is futher from “garbage” than any other organization in the NFL.. Eagles fly for Leukimia has raised millions for children who are staring down the barrel of a gun at their own mortality… Jeffery Laurie has continued the great link between the community and the team that Leonard Towes started 30 years ago when most teams wouldnt even think of such a feat..

although it may be beyond someone like you NFLMASTER to see it, the fact that the Eagles signed a convicted felon like Mike Vick when NO ONE thought he could be ready to play or help their team out says a lot.. It wasnt as if Vick was still running a 4.3 forty and practicing against NFL players while he was locked up in federal prison with 30 teams knocking down the door to sign him…

They did the AMERICAN thing and gave someone a second chance, when NO ONE else was ready to, and they got rewarded for it when a year later he took over and almost beat the packers in 22 minutes on the field…

that says a lot about an organization.. that they are willing to give someone a second chance when no one else will..

This is my belief why Namdi Asomuagh wanted to come to the Eagles.. he is fully involved in the community and giving back to ppl who are less fortunate or in dire need of support..

if I as a philadelphian seem filthy to you then thats your opinion, im proud of my city and my team.. i doubt you have done more than drive past us on 95 or land for a layover at the airport that is barely within the city’s limits..

Philadelphia is a beautiful city and it was the first capital of our country.. your ignorance probably doesnt allow you to even appreciate what philadelphia is actually about

Our fans dont bail, they are hyper critical and know their sports.. unfortunately because some drunk teenager dressed up like santa and got snowballs throw at him 35 years ago people keep saying how AWFUL we are.. but we dont kill Giants fans in parking lots and we care as much if not more than every other teams fans..

if im filthy.. then so be it.. im 28 and this is the greatest era of sports this city has ever seen.. everyday is christmas.. and im gonna sit back and enjoy the ride…

    GO PHILLY

I keep waiting for you to pull off a mask, start talking like someone whose first language is English, and explain that you’re doing an impression of a retarded NFL fan.

    Sadly, I don’t think that’s the case.

  57. kevpft says: Aug 5, 2011 6:08 PM

The season hasn’t even started yet, and I’m already ready to declare Eagles fans the most-talking-with-least-to-back-it-up champions of all time!

So much calling of other teams that have actually won Super Bowls at multiple points in history ‘losers’!

To help out, here are a few sample chants Eagles fans can try as the season begins:

“We’re gonna win the Super Bowl this year, and be the last team in our division to do it! And we’ll still be a few SB wins behind the other NFC East team with the next-fewest! Yay, Eagles!”

“We beat the Romo-less Cowboys by 3 points last year! We are the best!”

“We barely managed to scrape out a win of the division last year, thanks entirely to a Giants collapse for the ages! And then we crashed out of the playoffs! The Bears made it further than we did! Rah rah rah!”

And of course, this timeless gem:

“We are setting a great example for our kids by cheering like lovesick girls for a man who took pleasure in torturing and killing dogs! Woo!”

Don’t thank me, Eagles fans – thank your team. I couldn’t do it without them and their track record.

    @Laeaglefan,

“The Ryan brothers (Rex and Rob) seem to be getting even more attention than Daddy Buddy ever got. They’ll both end up with the same legacy as their Dad though….can’t win the big game.”

Well, we all know where Buddy Ryan was the head coach from 86-90, now don’t we?

I will never forget the punch that Buddy Ryan threw at Gilbride while on the sidelines when they were both coaching in Houston – that type of fight and feistiness IS evident in both Rex and Rob, and that is what is evident in both of their personalities. You gotta love that as either a Jets or Cowboys fan.

Rex has been to the AFC championship two years in a row. The Eagles haven’ t been able to say they did that, but winning it all is the goal, and the point. Now is the time. What have you got, Eagles?

    —————————————————————-

I love the use of the word “another”. It correctly implies that Super Bowls have been won while Jerry Jones was owner. Three of them, in fact.

Good luck winning *a* Super Bowl, Eagles. Something that the Eagles have never been able to do, no matter the owner. Not Jeff Lurie, not Norman Braman, not Leonard Tose, not Jerry Wolman.

    Another year slower, Vick…

I don’t know about that, zeus. I would say all of the wishes on the Mike Patterson thread were extremely classy and upstanding, even from opposing fans (of which I am one).

No sense in wishing for season-ending injuries. Better to beat (or lose to) a team at full strength. No honor in beating a depleted team.

    ————————-

No, you’re right, everyone commenting on Patterson’s thread was really respectful and great. That wasn’t what I was referencing.

I was referencing the recurring glee a lot of posters use when they say “Vick is just one knee-shot from [Insert my team's best Defensive Player] being out for the season” as if this wasn’t true of every player who takes the field.

You might stand a chance at a superbowl if you had a smart guy like Peyton Manning, a warrior like Big Ben who can stand up to a nasty ravens D, take a broken nose and keep on playing and finally winning the game. Bradys guts and precision or even Doug Williams who for years was beat down in Tampa and then finally showed everybody what a story of redemtion really is.

Coming back from killing dogs is not redemption. That chump is never gonna win a super bowl so get over yourselves cuz your trippin. If Vick was on another team that the egirls hate on you would get real and tell it like it is.

In all seriousness, I can understand the boos for Santa Claus eventually getting forgotten, but the multitude of snowballs also getting thrown at Santa? well, that one is going to be a little harder to live down, and the boos for Santa will forever be connected. I mean, seriously – how low-class can you get? The funny thing was, as the story goes, a lot of the snowballs were coming from the upper deck – the fans were probably more accurate in their throws at Santa than was the Philly QB Norm Snead.

That was a display of disappointed, bitter fans whose team was 2-11 at the time, and they took it out on a helpless, scraggly Santa (who was an Eagle fan in the seats dressed as Santa). Frank Olivo was his name, and he was quickly asked to leave his seat in the stands and fill in because the hired Santa for halftime was AWOL. Too funny…..

Since you have only an argument with the metaphorical example, let’s go with the literal – the Eagles haven’t been able to say they LITERALLY did that for the NFC Championship either. There you go. Both the metaphorical AFC example, AND the literal NFC example are both covered there for you. And to avoid any further confusion or any further feeble attempts at you being a smart-ass, when I say covered, I don’t mean it literally, just metaphorically.

For those few Eagle fans here cracking on the Packers.

Yep – very good chance they don’t repeat – but here’s something for you – you have to win one first to have the chance to repeat. BTW – last NFC team to go to back to back Superbowls? Packers.

As to saying the Packers are a weak team and worrying about how the Packer FA’s are doing in camp? That “weak team” went into Philly in the play offs and beat you. Starks hadn’t even played football in almost 2 years and as a rookie (6th round pick) he carved up your D for 123 yards.

Sure we didn’t go out and grab a ton of FA’s – didn’t need to. We basically got a whole squad back from IR. Not counting our draft picks. Cobb and DJ have been beasts already in camp – Cobb – our #5 receiver catched EVERYTHING you throw at him. I don’t know but I’m doubting any team is deep enough to shut down the talent that GB’s running at wideout – top to bottom.

If anything Eagles should thank GB. If it wasn’t for Clay Matthews turning Kolb into a tent stake week 1 – there’s no way you make the playoffs, and there’s no way you get jack for him in a trade. Dude woulda been exposed for the mediocrity he is.

Let me quantify something for you since you have trouble with ridiculous generalizations and dramatic emotional opinions:

Desean Jackson is one of only 3 players in the history of the NFL to score 8 touchdowns in a single season that were greater than 50 yards.

Who is your best receiver again?

Are you insecure and sad about your team because they didn’t make any nice moves this off season? :(

Vince Young should know better than to open his mouth – when he does, it hasn’t worked out for him in the past. I can assure you the Eagles quickly shut him up once that title got out and was given fuel by the media. By the way, that same media is who has ran with the “America’s Team” designation as well for all these years, but that hasn’t stopped the Eagle fans (among other non-Cowboy fans) from beating that dead horse for decades.

Now you Eagle fans get to feel the pressure and expectations of that nomenclature, and whether you like it or note, you now own that badge. All your team has to do is win it all. But given their history, the odds are not in their favor.

NFL Films made that highlight video, sparky. They make highlight videos of every team after every season. That narrator was the unimitable John Facenda. To quote then-editor and current VP and editor-in-chief Bob Ryan (no relation to Buddy):

“I wanted to come up with a different twist on their team highlight film. I noticed then, and had noticed earlier, that wherever the Cowboys played, you saw people in the stands with Cowboys jerseys and hats and pennants. Plus, they were always the national game on television.”

And later, to the NFL Network on it’s “Top Ten Nicknames” show, which named “America’s Team” as the #1 nickname in the NFL:

“I saw all these fans in away stadiums. Hey, they’re the most popular team in the country. How can I use that? Why don’t we call them “America’s Team”?”

Running the mouth at the first sight of a microphone seems to be a Ryan family trait.

    ———————————————–

and as soon as they are proved wrong, suddenly they are no longer chatty and it gets forgotten.

Ryans don’t “talk the talk” they “walk the walk”?

Where are the Heisman trophies Rex promised everyone for the past two years?

What happened to Buddy’s Birds in the playoffs?

That is the pure definition of talking the talk.

man u commenters are so predictable. You guys read 1 qoute taken out of a long interview and instead of going and seeing if you understood it how he meant, you’d rather just get your pitch forks out and form a mob.

They invented this little word called “context” along time ago. Maybe you should look up what it means, then use it to try to figure out what a guy really meant when he said something before you make a snap judgement.
