Derrick Mason is headed to the Jets

Derrick Mason AP

Derrick Mason is headed to the New York Jets, a decision that will disappoint two other AFC squads.

“Jet fuel is full time to fly!!!!!” Mason wrote on Twitter, announcing the move.

The 37-year-old veteran had other options.  Tennessee gave him a chance to play for his hometown team in Nashville. The Ravens offered familiarity.

Instead, Mason will head to New York, where he’ll presumably play the slot between Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress.  Mason is old in the tooth, but we though it was crucial to close this deal considering the Jets really have no clue how Burress will fare.

It would be fitting if the Ravens replaced Mason with deposed Jet Jerricho Cotchery.

Good. You can do a hell of a lot worse in the slot than Mason, whether he’s 37 or not.

At first I didnt really understand this, most teams want to get younger and faster at wr. But the more I considered it, the more sense it makes. The Jets have a move the chains offense and another vetran who can make a big 3rd and 6 catch is really what this team needs. Great signing.

Mixed feelings as a Ravens fan.

Unlike Heap, who came to us after the Cards offered him what they did and gave us a chance to match, Mason turned down more money from us so he could work in a new system with a worse QB. Bitter much? Also, the Cardinals are no Jets — they’re classy and low-key.

Thanks for all your work Derrick but there is no way you will be in the Ravens Ring of Honor now, and probably rightfully so.

This is a good pick up for the Jets, it will come down to how much he has left in his tank. IMO he will do good this year, not great considering the Jets are a ground and pound team. Interesting how they signed a bunch of big name receivers when they hardly throw the ball? Did Mark’s game improve that much?

  20. Arun Krishnan says: Aug 6, 2011 4:30 PM

After losing Cotchery, they had to get him. He’s getting older, but should be effective as a slot receiver and he has shown that he’s a good red zone WR even if he’s going to struggle against man coverage.

Then again, as long as Plax is healthy, Mason is the 3rd wideout and Keller is a threat as well. Only the Eagles and the Packers have the corner depth to play man against him.

  29. mswravens says: Aug 6, 2011 4:45 PM

I don’t think this is that big of a deal as far as the Ravens. D Mace is a solid possession receiver, but we don’t need that with Q being a superior possession receiver. There are others available if need be. But I’m not buying all the “in Oz we trust” talk in Bmore. He has totally bungled this off-season. Not landing a WR like Holmes, or even Floyd, who can legitimately stretch the field…while letting your two main outlets (Heap & Mason) go…what are you thinking? Our receiving corps consists of Q and a bunch of 1st & 2nd year no names (including at TE). So we gonna run the ball more? Great. Who the hell is our back-up to Rice, who ain’t exactly a tank who can carry the ball 350 times. We don’t have one! Oh yeah…Jalen Parmalee is it?

Ozzie tried to play the system again, and he got burned. Believe me, I hope all these rooks & 2nd year players make him the genius & me the turd…but I’m not expecting a whole lot from the Ravens this year…hate to have to say it…

DMace is a nice pick-up for the Jets. I expect he’s gonna get frustrated with Sanchez…and his role…and that he still won’t have a SB ring…but he always goes all out. I’ll give him that.

————————————————————-Danchez had nothing to do with winning the playoff games.

The indy game was one of the worst performances by a QB in a playoff game ever. Sanchez was overthrowing every WR. After he missed two open WR’s for TDS and then threw an INT at the end of the 1sy half the Jets had to stop throwing the ball entirely. If not for Edwards to great catches of the 3 passes Sanchez threw on the winning FG drive the Jets would not have won.

In NE playoff again Danchez was baled out by great WR play. Statistically his numbers in this game looked good but again he was wildly inaccurate. 4 great catches on overthrown crossing routes by Edwards and Holmes saved him. A great catch by Edwards before the Tomlinson TD continued the drive. A great catch on a poor pass for the 1st TD by Tomlinson. A great run by Edwards got the 2nd TD after a 4 yard slant and an amazing catch by Holmes on the third TD on actual rare well thrown ball by Sanchez.

Sanchez is horribly inaccurate, lacks vision of the field, has happy feet in the pocket, does not understand what the defense is doing and is all around a terrible QB.

What benefits Sanchez is he is the most protected QB in the NFL. He is not put into obvious passing situations much. Teams generally play 8-9 men int he box daring him to throw and he cannot beat them. In 3rd and 5 situations or close game sin the 4th quarter his passer rating plummets to the worst in the league because defense play him more honestly.

Just imagine how bad Sanchez would be if he was on a normal team having to pass to win games. It is likely he would be out of the NFL by now.

Sanchez may be a nice guy. But he is terrible QB. Next year the Jets will likely be looking to draft his replacement.

No they wouldn’t. What team would ever want a QB that has thrown 29TD 33INT in his career so far? His inabilities as a QB is masked by one of the best defenses in the NFL….

  34. depotnator says: Aug 6, 2011 4:54 PM

“It would be fitting if the Ravens replaced Mason with deposed Jet Jerricho Cotchery”

Cotchery asked for his release back in February. He wasn’t deposed – the Jets granted him the release he asked for. He didn’t want to play the #3 role in his contract year, nor would he renegotiate for a lessor role.

  35. BTC says: Aug 6, 2011 4:57 PM

Now I’m hearing the Ravens didn’t even make him an offer. Maybe he didn’t spurn us — maybe we didn’t even want him back! That actually puts a hilarious spin on it.

  36. jets74 says: Aug 6, 2011 4:57 PM

    @zinn22

you must not watch too much Jets football. Sanchez is extremely elusive in the pocket (check out the play he made on Jericho’s great catch last year in order to get him the ball) . He makes throws when games are on the line (see our victories vs. Houston, Detroit, and Cleveland). Maybe the wideout’s make nice catches, but if he as inaccurate as your saying, there is know way they even have a chance to catch those balls. And lets not forget, he is 24 and has played a whopping total of 2 years. And in those 2 years, i have seen 2 AFC championship games and our quaterback post a 95 QB rating, 9-3 td:int ratio, and 4 road playoff victories (one of which was vs NE which is just almost just as big as winning the whole thing). Is he a great QB in this league yet? No. But he is far, far from terrible.

  38. flagstaffphotos says: Aug 6, 2011 5:03 PM

@tucknrolle – you haven’t been watching Ochocinco. He can’t get open – he got his stats last year in garbage time during huge blowout losses when other teams put in their 2nd and 3rd stringers – and he was STILL not half the receiver T.O. was. I don’t think the guy has any tread left on the tires – he was completely unable to get separation against the Ravens, so I think Revis and Cromartie will eat him alive.

So many of you people are clueless about the jets and its so obvious by the comments and then the thumbs up they get too lol. Leave Sanchez alone, hes done more or as good than any qb i can think of recently after his first two years. Hes won a ton of playoff games and he still gets NO credit. You people expect him to be like Manning or Brady or something its comical, hes had two effin seasons people! Relax. For you guys on here that still make the foot jokes. You are losers and obviously are too dumb to think of anything else to say by now. Its not funny at all, really! A 37 year old receiver who is washed up, a 34 year old convict who gets hurt, and a pothead who have a QB that has a hotdog hanging out of his mouth throwing them the football. If not for a running game they would be crap, which they are banking on shonne green to be the next Bo Jackson this year. Makes me sick. The All-hype team is done, I see 9-7,8-8 on horizon. Jets fans and their like wish they had the history that the Dolphins have. Try this on for size fool: 5 Super Bowl appeareances…3 back to back to back…2 Super Bowl victories back to back ohhh and throw in a perfect season. In fact they only lost 5 games in 3 years from 71-73. Before you talk about easy schedule…they beat everybody for 3 years straight. They were 37-5 in 3 years. They beat great Steelers teams, Raiders and Chiefs. Unmatched by any team in NFL history. 22 playoff appearances, 13 division titles and the 2nd winningest team since the NFL creation of 1970 with 399-271 with a winning % of .595.
The Joke Jest have won NO Super Bowls since the NFL was created. Have won the division 2 times have not appeared in ANY Super Bowls and have finished above .500 only 13 times since 1970 merger. That’s 28 losing seasons out of 41.They have one of the worst winning % ever with a record of 292-360 for a measly .448 winning %. You were the doormat for the NFL in the 70′s, 80′s, 90′s and 2000′s.
We know the Dolphins are in a rough patch right now. We also never said the Dolphins were the best and were going to win it all as the sad and sorry Jest fans do. You and your loser coach need to learn some humility.
So yes my SAD Jest fan go hide back under that rock. When you get a REAL NFL team then tell us how wonderful you are.
As to the state of Todays NY Jerks…oops I mean J.E.T.S……you have a loud mouth loser pervert coach, a noodle armed child molesting QB and a convicted idiot at WR who shot HIMSELF!! 3 Peat baby….your fool for a coach has guaranteed another Super Bowl victory. Your team is a total joke.

    @72 perfection

Dude, no one cares about the Dolphins. Not even people in Miami. That’s why Dolphins management started selling Jets stuff in the team store. It’s the only way to keep the lights on.

Plax and Mason are well past their prime, and Dirty just isn’t a starting caliber QB. Another year, another embarrassed Jets head coach who can’t live up to his braggadocio.

Going to be an interesting season…..can you feel the passion, love em or hate em, Rex did his job and made the Jets relevant.

If the Jets are trying to get older and slower at Wide Out they are doing an excellent job. Love my former Spartans Plax and Mason but loved them more 8 years ago.

After all, we could’ve learned so much from Tice, Childress, and Frazier.

I doubt he survives the last cut. Wasn’t he ready to retire two years ago?

A player who frequently puts foot in mouth. That’s a Rex Ryan player.

Why so angry 72perfection? We Jets fans think Phins fans are great.Whenever we play down there you guys are nice enough to let us take over the stadium.

Mixed feelings as a Ravens fan.

Unlike Heap, who came to us after the Cards offered him what they did and gave us a chance to match, Mason turned down more money from us so he could work in a new system with a worse QB. Bitter much?

I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if it came out that his wife wanted to live in NY now. That was the reason he picked Balt. over NE back in 06, his wife wanted to live in Balt. Of course that could be code for “the Pats weren’t willing to pay me what Balt was” but it’s still funny.

I am not sure if it’s the cap that’s the reason behind the Jets getting older @ WR or what but it will be interesting to see what Cotchery and Edwards do on their new teams vs. what Mason and Burress do for the NYJ. Not sure I would want my young QB having to adjust to two new WRs, (one of which hasn’t caught a pass in live action in almost 3 years) in a shortened offseason.

One thing I AM glad of is that the Pats don’t have the all-shrimpboat corps of CBs they did the last time they played Plax. They’ve upgraded a TON over that crew.
