Bill Parcells, two different QBs in two different Super Bowl wins. He also got to the Super Bowl with Drew Bledsoe.

Dick Vermeil won a Super Bowl with Kurt Warner and got to a second one with Ron Jaworski.

Bud Grant also made it to a Super Bowl with Joe Kapp and three others with Fran Tarkenton.

BTW, Tom Landry only won a title with Staubach.

He won the 1958 NFL Championship over the Giants with Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts (i.e. The Greatest Game Ever Played), as well as the 1959 Championship.

He then went on to win Super Bowl III with Joe Namath and the Jets, over the Baltimore Colts, his former team, coached by his successor, Don Shula.

terrible analysis by the author of the post to NOT realize that the SB-winning Pats teams from 2001 on were built with a number of inexpensive vet FAs (all “much closer to the end of their careers than the beginning”) to compliment their drafted players…

this has always been BB’s MO, not something taken from the page of his AFC East rivals…

andre carter is solid player and a class act. that said i doubt he makes the team, but makes for a great situational pass rushing end. we in washington wish him the best, maybe now he will get a chance at a ring because he is the caliber guy that deserves it

Belichick’s approach to build through the draft hasn’t changed

What’s changed is a dramatically shortened offseason where inexperienced rookies haven’t had the benefit of OTAs, training camp or pre-season games to top it off

In short, any team depending on rookies to start is at a major disadvantage.

Solution? Hire cheap, short-timer veterans to provide quality depth at affordable prices.

In the Patriots case they’re already a young defense, having gone 14-2 in a rebuilding year last year, so the older vets are an asset and all are low risk high reward players.

It’s clear what Belichick has on his mind. He is Hell-bent on beefing up that pass rush, one of the key elements in stalling their playoff drives the past few seasons. By carefully adding some key role players, I think they’ll see results in that area. If the offense continues to click and score in the Red Zone at a high rate, the team will be right there at season’s end. Of course, injuries are the great equalizer and I think the Pats are just as vulnerable as most teams. But I see what the HC and GM are doing and think it’s the right way to go. If the Pats’ pass rush suddenly comes alive, they will be much tougher to beat.

I see the AFC coming down to the Patriots, Steelers, Ravens and Jets. As usual, the team peaking at the end of the year will be tough to beat.

Guys, really. The Pats do this every year. You’ve got 90 spots now to fill a camp roster with. They bring in veterans to see what they have left in the tank, and see what they can offer to an otherwise young roster.

Tory Holt? John Lynch? Joey Galloway?

With the exception of stone hands Galloway none of those guys hurt the team by working out with the Pats.

every coach ever winning a SB is always in the hunt for the next one; as is every coach not winning a SB. Futile or not, that’s why the games are played. And that’s why Belichick is rounding out a team with all these FAs, to complement the 60% young draftees on his team. Most of these FAs now in Pat-land will not be there at the beginning of the season. I look for that D-line and secondary to be scarey and negate the fact he doesn’t have the right caliber of LBs.

2001 team was built upon the backs of close to retirement free agents at discount prices. BB had only been coach for a couple of years, so he was working with Pete Carrol’s left overs in many areas.

2003 still had many older FAs including those from 2001 in addition to the recent draft picks of BB.

2004 was more of a team built through the draft.

I see what the Patriots doing this year as very similar to 2001, not 2007.

I would rather see this route than signing big name, high priced FAs. That has never worked for them in the past when it comes to defense…see Adalius Thomas and Rosie Colvin (though in fairness Colvin was limited due to the major injury he suffered).

When was the las time Philly, Jets, Washington were in the Seper Bowl, much less win it?

The points about the Patiots mixing it up with draft picks (lots of them) and second tier free agents is true.

Belechick typcically does not put up with slackers. I wonder if this current move has anything to do with Fat Albert H. being out for two consecutive practices, and out for more practices than he has attended.

Time to get over the “cheating” folks. Every team does it. If you don’t think so stick to fantasy football.

Parcells jumped from team to team. He couldn’t stay anywhere long enough to finish the job. Belichick has been with the Patriots for the long haul.

Belichick also had a bad situation in Cleveland. Modell was moving the team…everyone knew it. No team has success when the Orginazation is unstable.

This is just another attempt to find someone to bolster their league worst 3rd down defense. It has zero to do with their base D.

Andre Carter will be brought in on rush downs and will likely be relatively effective at it.

And I kind of agree with the notion that the Patriots have given up on building through the draft. They simply aren’t investing high picks into OLB/DE and DE/DT types. They desperately need a young Ty Warren and they simply don’t have him.

Strange comment about scuttling the whole “build through the draft” mentality considering that the Patriots annually maneuver the draft to stockpile picks in the first two rounds.

Also a strange omission to fail to recognize that the Patriots dynasty was built by complementing the draft by signing second tier free agents such as Mike Vrabel, Antowain Smith, Roman Phifer, Ottis Smith, Bryan Cox, Joe Andruzzi….The list goes on and on. And that’s not even counting the “big” name acquisitions they made over the years such as Rosevelt Colvin, Rodney Harrison, Corey Dillon, and Randy Moss.

It’s got to be sickening for Belichick to read that the approach he’s used successfully for over a decade is somehow now being dismissed as “taking a page from their rivals in the AFC East”.
Let’s give credit where credit is due. The Patriots didn’t take a page from anyone. They’re the ones who WROTE THE DAMN BOOK!
