Rob Ryan assumes blame for performance of Dallas defense in scrimmage

AP

New Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has promised to “beat [the] asses” of the “all-hype team” in Philly.  Along the way, the Cowboys defense apparently has gotten its ass beaten by the offense of another “all-hype team.”

Specifically, the Dallas “D” was shredded by the offense in a Blue-White intrasquad scrimmage at the Alamodome in San Antontio, the site of the team’s training camp.

We don’t like giving up points,” Ryan said, according to Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.  “Sometimes it happens.  That is the way it is.  But put it on me.  I dusted off a couple of calls we hadn’t worked on.  Put it me its my fault.  The players will be fine.”

Quarterback Tony Romo completed 14 of 20 passes for 150 yards against the starting defense, with touchdown passes to receiver Dez Bryant, tight end Jason Witten, and running back Lonyae Miller.

Per Williams, the performance included wide-open receivers, multiple time outs in a goal-line situation due to miscommunication, and no pressure on Romo.

Maybe it just means that the offense is really, really good.

  1. All the Cowboy fans have to look at is the Raiders “D” under Ryan to know what to expect.

Just don’t be surprised if there is no “D” in “Big D”.

  2. The steelers defense is the best in the league so we dont have to worry about these types of problems. Our evidence is in our greatness and our 6 rings. 6.

  3. Maybe it means its just a scrimmage.

Because I’m not about to believe that offense is really really good.

  4. When will the Ryans learn to keep their mouths shut (this applies to predictions as well as consumption of food)

  5. @6ringsofsteel, your stupid steeler postings have inspired me to get the username 7ringsofsteel to deny you in case the steelers win again

  6. Hate to be the one to break this to you 6ringofsteel, BUT your best in the league “D” got smoked in the Super Bowl. So, Yes, you do have to worry about those types of problems

  7. “Maybe it just means that the offense is really, really good.”

    ahhhhhhhhhhhhh hahahahahahahahaha
    hahahahahaha hahahahahahaha hahahhahaha hahahaha

Sorry about that, I simply couldn’t control my… AHHHHHHH HAHAHAHA HAHAHA HAHAHAH HAHAHAH HAHAHA HAHAHAHA HAHAAHA!!!!!

  8. It’s funny to me that Rob Ryan has been talking so much smack already. Is he the only one that doesn’t realize he was fired by the Browns…lol. At least do something in your career before you open your yap!

  9. Yeah looks like fatso is going to eat a lot of crow this year. Why would you have been the DC on losing team. Raiders and Browns and soon as you left the Raiders the finished 5-0 in their division. Sounds like he is trying to be like Rex with no resume. Oh well Cowgirls may be able to get Pee Wee Herman to motivate them. Robby boy just needs to STHU.

  10. why do players love playing for these fatty-boombalatis. seriously, how can world class athletes have so much respect for two fat obnoxious slobs that consistantly make asses of themselves

  11. No reason to think a new defense will be shutting down in only two weeks of practice. Just like new players need time to adjust so do offensives and defensive sides of the ball.

  12. So much for Ryan’s “we walk the walk”, he’s no different than his ole’ man and Rex, all they know how to do is “talk the talk”. After one week of training camp, every other teams defense is light years ahead of the offense, but not in dallas, LMAO
p.s……..we can only wish that the media would ignore Ryan until he actually “walks the walk” for at least an entire year.

  13. @6ringofsteel: You sir, are a tool. It’s d-bag’s like you that makes me feel REAL good that my Packers beat your Steelers in the past Super Bowl. You think that 6 championships is a lot? Well buddy, the Pack has 13. We have you more than doubled-up. Stick THAT in your Roethlisburger sandwich! (I thought I’d stoop to d-bag level, as I’m sure it’s the only thing you know)

    I agree.
    That’s right.
It was the Stealers D that helped them beat the Packers in the recent SB.
And it was a defender who forced a fumble against a RB to help them win.
And that same defender draped a title belt over the shoulder of Rapestbooger while he held up the Lombardi trophy.
    Yup.
I remember that game all too well.
    LOL

  15. @ “6ringofsteel”

Damn u never give up do you. It’s annoying that on every story u somehow remind everybody that YOU have 6 rings. And OUR rings, OUR defense, OUR greatness. It’s NOT yours. It’s THEIR rings, THEIR defense, THEIR greatness. So calm down buddy and maybe for once you can contribute a legitimate comment for the story that was written. GO CHARGERS!! 0 rings (big deal)

  16. Glad to see our Offense hasn’t lost a step but with no apparent pressure I don’t know if our Line did well or if the defense lacked the coverage. I think it’ll be our offense that wins us games and our defense probably letting us down. Sure would’ve been nice to get Asomugha and cut Newman. I’m predicting as of now another missed playoff season and a near top ten pick in the draft assuming we stay healthy. By the way its been little over a week of practices and there is still a month to go to get this going. It’s all practice until Sept. 8th. Thats where we’ll see if he’s walking the walk.

  17. Well, personally I find it kind of refreshing to hear someone say “It is my fault, put it all on me.”
    No excuses or deflecting blame.
It’s early in the pre-season and teams are going to struggle a bit after this horrendous off season.
Can’t we at least wait until the first pre-season game to declare which team is going to be a disaster?

I guess you haven’t figured it out yet, but 6ringofsteel is not Steelers fan, but rather some deranged, attention seeking troll.

  20. As long as you aren’t allowed to blitz and pressure Romo, what’d’ya really expect? I have a feeling other defenses will actually be allowed to touch him.

  21. Ryan needs to learn that old saying about walking softly and carrying a big stick. I am all For Coach Marahmallow being out of there but this guy…just shut up and do your talking on the field. I don’t want to hear about past glory or who is going to whip who. Just coach!

  22. Romo, Witten, Bryant, Austin, Felix Jones, and the UP and coming Lonyae Miller (remember that name) are going to regularly shred your defenses as well. Can’t speak for the defense, but Dallas will surely be top 5 in offense.

  23. @seabreezes51: “Dude should stick to bowling and white russians”

    ===========

    Sweet!

I saw Ryan at the grocery the other day. He was wearing a bathrobe, and wrote a .69 cent check for a carton of Half-and-Half.

  24. Keep in mind folks, Ratlif and Mike Jenkins and Newman did not play. It’s just a situational practice scrimmage you idiots.

  25. How magnanimous.

And after failing this year, next year he can talk the exact same crap and borrow his brother’s tried and true failure BS line of “And this time I mean it!!!”

and then “We’ll get ’em next year”

and then “This time I REALLY REALLY mean we are soon to be champs”

and then “Write it down. We will win the Super Bowl”

and then ….. well, they’ll think of something.

Way to walk the walk bros.

  26. Watch out there, Jabba Robba. We’re holding you and your mouth accountable. Remember what you said just a couple days ago about “walking the walk.”

  27. Why is a scrimmage like this a big deal? Just another chance to hate on Dallas? I just don’t see why a scrimmage performance after about 2 weeks of work is news. How are other teams scrimmages going?

  28. So your telling me players learning a new scheme in a short amount of time are making mistakes. What a shocker. For those of you thinking the offense isn’t any good, it was one of the top ten scoring offenses in the league last year, just sayin’.

  29. Or it means its the first week of camp and no one, ,,, no one is up to speed. Someone at PFT, please act or write like you’ve “been there”.
    Geeeeeezzze

I’m sure they share credit for their accomplishments with you- ROFL.

  31. This is what is called the tip of the ice berg!!!!.I knew the secondary was awful from last year and they did nothing to make it better .Thought they would`ve gotten some free agents this offseason, but being over the cap prevented it from happening…..So what would you like with your crow Rob? a soda nad some fries?

  32. Get used to hearing that a lot this season ye few remaining Cowboys fans.

    —————————————————————–

What, that the offense is going to make defenses look like schoolkids? haha come on it’s a scrimmage and there aren’t going to be many offenses that are better than the Cowboys’ O when the bullets start flying for real. Had a bad year injury-wise but it was still the 7th ranked offense last year, duuuuuh.

  33. Remind me again what is the highest ranked defense Rob Ryan has been a coordinator of?

    —————————————————————

2006 Raiders, #3 defense. You fanboys are cracking me up assinging any importance at all to an controlled intrasquad scrimmage where probably a dozen starters played very little or sat out completely. I guess that late game against the Eagles last year counts after all.

So, all the guys you had last year plus Lonyae Miller are going to make you a top 5 offense? Wow, Lonyae Miller must be some kind of stud!

  36. Wait….. Without either starting corner playing/practicing, the defense wasn’t very good…….. Imagine that.

  37. The Cowboys Defense was without their starting corners, nose tackle, and one of their middle linebackers.

It wasn’t much of a scrimmage. The offense continually started at the 25 yard line with a two-minute drill.

The defense was letting up because tackling was not allowed. So their pursuit wasn’t really all there.

These are facts. The fact that this is an article is a complete joke.

Only problem with this statement is that it typically takes longer for offenses to get on the same page. The Cowboys best CB is Newman, and he’s old and seriously banged up…just like last year. The Cowboys ignored players like Joseph to focus solely on Asomugha, and when they failed to get him did nothing to improve their CB situation. They also needed two new starting safeties, and brought in Sensabaugh (not all that good, but they needed someone and didn’t have much cap room to work with) and Elam (don’t know enough about him really). As it stands, unless there’s a major improvement very soon, the Cowboys secondary is just not that good. That explains the uncovered receivers. Aside from Ratliff and Ware, where is the power in this supposedly loaded defense?

LMAO. Well played!, I don’t think you’ll have to worry about that 7th. ring ianytime soon. The Stealers are one (alleged rape) or DUI away from implosion. Pig Ben looks like he packed on about 40lbs. in the off season making him even more immobile if that’s possible. Can’t wait to see his bloated carcasss being carted off the field by week 3 .

  40. Here’s a little info from the Cowboys’ website dersribing the situation for the scrimmage:

•Garrett planned more of a situational practice than a scrimmage. The first units faced off in the red zone, starting around the 25-yard line, followed by the second units. No tackling. The offense and defense each were given timeouts, and Rob Ryan’s group called several in a row inside the 10 during one series. Some were attributed to pre-snap miscommunication. “It becomes a chess game,” Garrett said. “Do we change the look up on offense? Do they change the look up on defense? When you have those extra timeouts you can do that and that’s what we would do in a real-life situation.”

I wouldn’t put much stock in an exhibition where there is no tackling. It’s step above flag football, but not much.

    _________________________
Yes, and the situation is game simulation. I guess the absence of Mike Jenkins explains the lack of penalties in the scrimmage. As for Newman not playing, get used to that. He’s old and always seems to be banged up lately. Either he won’t be playing a number of games, or he’ll be playing at a reduced effectiveness. So, you can use that excuse when the real losses start piling up again. Btw, I seem to remember the exact same situation and comments being made about it last year. How many times did people say, “oh, it’s just the preseason. they’ll make a deep run in the playoffs and could be the first team to play in a SB they’re hosting.”? Why? Simple, because the media makes money pumping up a team with a proud history and little else.

  42. Only problem with this statement is that it typically takes longer for offenses to get on the same page. The Cowboys best CB is Newman, and he’s old and seriously banged up…just like last year. —————————————————————–

Ehh BS, it’s not like you can only talk to one guy at a time. The Cowboys WERE NOT seriously pursuing Aso, because they didn’t pursue any other cornerbacks, either. There were plenty left after Aso as well.

  43. How asre going to kick the dream teams a$$ if you get burned by your own team which you would know most there plays because your on the coaching staff haha typical Ryan talk the talk but don’t walkthe walk

  44. Thought they would`ve gotten some free agents this offseason, but being over the cap prevented it from happening

    ————————————————————–

Ya, they only signed seven free agents. Doug Free, Kyle Kosier, Jason Hatcher, Abe Elam, Gerald Sensabaugh, Kenyon Coleman and Marcus Spears.

  45. Man what a joke of a team this is going to be. Rob Ryan as DC. Jason Garrett, LOL, as Head Coach. Boy I can’t wait to see a wasted year that leads to everybody being fired, and a long rebuilding process started, with no salary cap room. You Cowgirl fans are in for a long road of misery.

  46. if romo did that with bryant and the ufa RB….and witten is a beast …what could VICK do with Jmac, djaxx avant cooper mccoy brown clay harbor …ooo scary…..this is why you stay quiet like andy reid and bill bellichick and sting like a bee…

  47. Fired by the Browns.

#3 Defense in Oakland in 1996, when the Raiders went 4-12 and opposing teams new they only needed 2 touchdowns to win.

Career Defensive Coordinator record of around 30-80.

If his last name wasn’t Ryan, he would be cleaning toilets for a living.

  48. Couple rules for adults to keep in mind before getting into heated debates with anonymous posters:

    1) If someone says “we” when talking about the team they root for, you might be arguing with a 12 year old.

    2) When someone posts a comment about their team when the article had nothing to do with their team, you might be arguing with a 12 year old.

    3) When someone types “duuuuuh” in their posts, you might be arguing with a 12 year old.

    4) When someone types “haha” and “duuuuuh” in the SAME post, you might be arguing with a retarded 12 year old.

    5) when someone spends the whole summer making stupid predictions about the season being cancelled and then changes their screen name rather than face the music so that they can post comments about their team on every article regardless of whether it is about their team or not, you are DEFINITELY arguing with a 12 year old.

Why do these people’s parents buy them computers?

  49. Any Rob Ryan fan who points out he coached the Raiders to the 3rd best defense (by yardage) in 2006 needs to then point out his other six defenses, from 2004 to 2010, excluding 2006 were 30th, 27th, 22nd, 27th, 31st and 22nd. On average, Ryan’s defenses have placed 22nd in points allowed and 23rd in yards allowed.

Ryan’s cred has come from his college coaching days and the halo effect from his time with the Cardinals (as secondary coach) and the Patriots (as linebacker coach). During those years, those “Ds” did well, and Ryan can take come credit, but certainly not all of it or even a lot of it.

On the whole, Ryan is vastly overrated as a “defensive genius” and has yet to prove himself capable of coaching a pro D to acceptable levels.

As for 6ringsofsteel, I am a Steeler fan and even I think you are a tool.

Ryan’s defense stopped the Patriots last year, he’s good, he just has average parts and no shut down DB…then again he didnt really have a shut down corner in Cleveland, either. He doesnt need to run his mouth as much as his brother.

  55. god that is hilarious…. less then a week after he started talking about whooping another teams ass and a few days after he was claiming that he didnt just talk the talk he walked the walk his unit falls flat on his face.

    ha

When someone makes a comment like this, it’s almost a certainty that he’s 12 years old.

  57. stairwayto7,

You are a dumb-ass – mark it down. Ryan has HIGH expectations. You don’t have a perfect D less than 2 weeks into a new training camp, and the Dallas O is loaded with talent. This D will get a lot of work, and by the time it is all said and done, and pre-season is over, this D will be performing well. This team will be very competitive this year, and will win between 9-12 games this year. Stairwayto7, YOU can mark THAT down. You are very likely either an Eagle or 4skin fan.

  58. nfldaddy,

“When is he going to assume blame for eating all of the cupcakes?”

If I remember correctly, you are an Eagles fan. Last time I checked, Reid hasn’t had lap band surgery, or has gone on any type of a diet to lessen his waistband. You are a hypocritical buffoon, and your posts are reeking of less than original hate for the Cowboys in general. Get a life.

  59. I think it’s time for us to start blaming the 3-4 scheme period… I hate it and think it’s garbage…

  60. @puregenius47

Regarding your questions about Lonyae Miller; 6′ and 230 with 4.4 speed and had 26 reps on the bench. He was former first rounder, Ryan Matthews’ back-up at Fresno State.

  61. This is just another article to prove that Dallas is America’s Team. That title is not about records, or Super Bowls, Dallas has that title because they are the most watched team in the NFL regardless of their record, they sale the most merchandise than any other team , and they are the most talked about in the media.(Check the internet for the facts to prove this if you don’t believe) This simply makes them America’s Team. Is there any other article on here about another teams scrimmage game? Who cares about a scrimmage after two weeks of learning a new defense. If the D would have been good then this article would have been about Romo not looking good.

And to all you hating Eagles fans, Your QB is Mike Vick. Great Athlete, but he will be hurt up and out of gas by the time you reach the playoffs.

  62. Yet Cowboys fans will still say Romo is the problem…haha.

Top 5 Offense shreds bottom tier Defense. Nothing new to see here… just the same ole’ Dallas team Jerry doesn’t know how to fix.. FOR THE PAST 3 YEARS!
