Casey Matthews looks like Philly’s starting middle linebacker

Casey Matthews AP

Casey Matthews was a well-known draft prospect because of his brother Clay, but he didn’t get taken until the fourth round because his pro ceiling was viewed as limited.

The Oregon product is quickly exceeding expectations.

Matthews was named the starting middle linebacker on the first official Eagles depth chart Monday.  That designation confirms what has been seen in practice. Matthews has been with the “ones” in every Eagles package.

We don’t put a lot of stock in early depth charts because they tend to put rookies and free agents lower than they should be. (For instance, Jason Babin is listed as a backup in Philly.)

Naming Matthews the starter right now sends a message.  They want him to fulfill the promise that Stewart Bradley could not the last few years. Jamar Chaney and Moise Fokou flank Matthews on the weak and strong side respectively.

If this guy works like Clay, the Eagles will have a great draft steal on their hands.

Roids and HGH just like his brother.

The lack of quality players at *any* LB position will be their downfall.

  4. ICDogg says: Aug 8, 2011 9:11 AM

Actually Chaney (with an “a”) is now on the strong side and Fokou on the weak side, not the other way around.

this guy is a beast, literally he might not be build like clay but he has techniques like clay and hits like the eagles demand…..i bet goodell starts fining him for “big hits “..!

Stewart Bradley really wasn’t a bad LBer. Now his health was always an issue, but he wasn’t bad.

I think most Eagles fans would prefer he were there starting, over a 4th round rookie.

  10. drmonkeyarmy says: Aug 8, 2011 9:26 AM

    Larryfitzmvp,
Bradley was decent. His real strength wasn’t in his play rather that he understood McDermott’s defense and was able to get guys in the proper position. When he wasn’t out there, his replacement played much better as an individual but guys were out of position more frequently. I think that ceases to be a problem this season with a simplified defense.

  11. hunternuts says: Aug 8, 2011 9:31 AM

I don’t have a good feeling about the decision to go with CM in the middle, behind a line that will be attacking and not protecting the MLB. I also don’t see Lloyd being the backup to start the season.

A classic move by the front office will be to pick up a waived veteran MLB at cut down time and cut Lloyd the day after he makes the “final cut”.

Then that veteran will learn behind CM for a few weeks while the team sees if CM can do the job.

Let’s hope this doesn’t become this year’s AR achilles heal… like punt returner, etc…

It must be great to have a famous brother.

  14. tjacks7 says: Aug 8, 2011 9:39 AM

    Heh, heh, you said Fokou.

  16. birdobeamen says: Aug 8, 2011 9:40 AM

Considering the Iggs have enough quality DB’s to play in the DIME about 90 percent of the time, does it really matter who the linebackers are?

  17. gulaid26 says: Aug 8, 2011 9:44 AM

He can’t be any worse than what they were rolling with last year. After all these moves the eagles have made, their LBs are still awful. They can’t hide that.

  18. paulsmith107 says: Aug 8, 2011 9:47 AM

Bahahahahaha just goes to show how lame the linebacker corps is in Philly no LB’s no safeties only one reliable guy on the d line and the guy who gotta make that work had more talent on the o line and couldn’t get them to block for the better qb on the team so they shipped him off ha ha ha fly eagirls fly

  19. bleedblue18 says: Aug 8, 2011 9:52 AM

I saw him play in college and he is ok. Starter at MLB his rook season in the NFL I don’t know about that good. Just tells me the depth at MLB for the Eagles is a little suspect right now.

I’m sorry that the Eagles can’t draft LBs. Really, I am. It’s not like they haven’t tried. As for Casey Mathews… small and slow is not a good combination for a LB.

  21. edukator4 says: Aug 8, 2011 9:55 AM

yes birdobeaman it does matter who the lbs are. if you expect to see the eagles in consistent dime defenses then you better enjoy watching teams run on them all day, especially outside where your corners who usually dont enjoy tackling will be the first wave of defenders expected to bring down the rbs

  22. 7to10for6allday says: Aug 8, 2011 9:55 AM

Nobody has proclaimed anything about any dream team. That was something stupid that VY said. And like most of you haters on here, you just ate it up like the puppets that you are. Lol maybe it’s your way of expressing your frustrations about your teams lack of free agency. Keep hatin bc the eagles are gonna be real good. I love it, haters keep hatin and the eagles are your puppet master. Lmao

Actually yes, if you plan to defend against the run at all.

  24. relly142 says: Aug 8, 2011 10:02 AM

Mark my words, eagles fans and all the sad eagle haters are going to be surprised by the Eagles LB corps. All you haters don’t know a thing about these guys other than they aren’t big names and they are young. Fokou is not a bad LB and I think his skill set is really good on the weak side. Chaney looked really good last year, although that was in the middle. And Matthews is the type of player that will constantly be around the ball, he’s obviously a hard worker and hard work will always beat talent. Cowboys, giants and redskins fans are going to hate this kid. Trust me.

  25. melonnhead says: Aug 8, 2011 10:08 AM

6’1″, 231, 4.78 40, only 13 bench press reps. Meh. Small, slow and weak. Cowboys kicker David Buehler had better measurables (4.57 40, 25 reps).

  26. eaglesowngiants says: Aug 8, 2011 10:09 AM

It makes no difference whos playing linebacker for this team…. their offense is going to put up a ridiculous amount of points game in and game out…. they will lock down on the outside and dare teams to run the ball. Other teams will not be able to stay with mike vick and the rest of the eagles offense by running the ball….. see ya in indy

  27. shamburg says: Aug 8, 2011 10:09 AM

Well since YOU haven’t heard of our LBs, they must really suck, huh?

Chaney stepped in at MIKE last year with Bradley hurt and showed everyone how disposable Bradley was. Fokou finished the last 2 seasons starting at SAM and did a decent job. Casey to me is the obvious question mark, being a rookie and having a short camp, but the team and beat reporters are saying he’s outperformed all expectations, so we’ll see.

  33. birdobeamen says: Aug 8, 2011 10:14 AM

The Eagles LB’s are going to be the most suprising aspect of this years teams.

Fools that haven’t followed the Eagles are going to be shocked. Those that HAVE watched the Eagles tho (rival fans included — the non-hating knowledgeable ones) already know that both Chaney and Fokou are players….Casey’s gonna have to prove himself.

  34. 7to10for6allday says: Aug 8, 2011 10:19 AM

Yes I’m saying VY is a nobody. He’s childish and needs to grow up. That’s why he’s a back up and nobody wanted him. Or maybe he knows that Reid might get him his new big contract like he did for kolb.

  35. laeaglefan says: Aug 8, 2011 10:20 AM

Bradley was a disappointment last year, but he was coming off of a serious injury. The Eagles obviously didn’t think he’d ever live up to his early potential. But look for him to make the Pro Bowl this year as a Cardinal.

  36. ticalcaldwell says: Aug 8, 2011 10:21 AM

I think everyone thinks the same thing ( If he is 1/10 of Clay, he will start in the NFL). I just picture Clay’s dad during the Super Bowl, saying “now is the time” and then Clay causes the fumble right after…sorry, one of the best all time SB moments ever…

  37. renaissanceman87 says: Aug 8, 2011 10:27 AM

    @Shamburg
Casey put on 15 lbs in the offseason? I guarantee you that no more than 5 of those lbs were muscle, the rest is fat. It’s not like those 15 lbs are going to make him significantly stronger or explosive.

  38. blackheld says: Aug 8, 2011 10:28 AM

It’s funny. For all the signings the Eagles made, Detroit, who needed linebackers badly, went out and quietly signed two starters…no fanfare…and got Steven Tulloch and Justin Durant and plugged them into the starting defense.

It might be nice to have Vince Young and Ronnie Brown and all those defensive linemen, but a rookie MLB is like a knife to the heart of a defense. Figure seven points a game the kid will cost the Eagles.

Maybe they can move Samuel to MLB. Or…not.

  40. nothingman20 says: Aug 8, 2011 10:35 AM

    @blackheld

“Figure seven points a game the kid will cost the Eagles.”

There are literally no players in the NFL that statistically will result in 7 points per game.

You could replace the best player in the league with the worst at their position and it would not have a 7 point per game impact.

    Stop saying dumb things.

  41. fightingorange says: Aug 8, 2011 10:36 AM

Holy crap, Eagles fans are truly delusional! Criticize one element of the team, and they reply with visions of grandeur. They Eagles have a weakness at LB, get over it! As for the Eagles having an unmatched offense that will compensate for their D, I’ll see it when I believe it. Despite Vick’s success last year, he’s still a career 55% accurate QB. Plus, he’s one scramble away from getting hurt. I think the Eagles will definitely have the ability to put some points up, but I’m not sure they are destined for Indy. In the meantime Eagles fans, calm down.

  42. birdobeamen says: Aug 8, 2011 10:38 AM

  43. pftlhp says: Aug 8, 2011 10:38 AM

If the big free agency moves the Eagles made is the “yin,” this move falls under the “yang.” In order to pull off those moves they were going to have to depend on less expensive veteran or rookie players in certain spots. Did they peg Matthews as the starting MLB on draft day? Doubtful. But maybe they like what they see.

Declaring how he’ll do this season, good or bad, is a bit premature, isn’t it? We’ll see how he responds to the opportunity.

I think Casey Mathews will do decent, however during all those FA’s you signed, you didn’t think to pick up a starting LB? IMO the Eagles can start Mathews but they are going to need a Vet LB otherwise RB’s and Tight End’s are going to eat you alive. Why throw the ball to recievers if people can just dump it off to get by your Rookie and no name LB’s?

I would know this because the Chargers have had mediocre LB’s and that’s how teams always beat us… in the Running game, with there TE’s and short dump offs.

Chaney was the Eagles best linebacker last year playing the MLB position; and has now been moved to SAM( not weak side like you said) since he has the speed to cover the TE. Fokou will be fine at the WIL, probably better than the stiffs they’ve had there the last few years. And, sure, Matthews is a rookie, but I’m not betting against any member of that family turning out to be a terrific MLB, history is definitely on their side.

  57. philly2boston says: Aug 8, 2011 11:27 AM

There is conventional wisdom in what Philly is doing. in Juan Castillo’s 1st year as DC (not so conventional) he has promised a read and react defense with the emphasis on attacking the ball. if you have quality dbs and supposedly upgraded a previously substandard pass rush, the LBs need only be quick and athletic. after seeing the post concussed Stewart Bradley JC knew he needed to go with some youth. he’s absolutely done that with Fokou being the eldest at 23(?). I Suspect there will be some drawbacks far outweighed by upside. At least they have plenty of time to mesh as a unit while the onus is on other areas of the defense.

Sure the kicker has better numbers, but considering the kid Casey was injured in the LAST game of the year for Oregon, the Eagles were able to overlook the combine and go off his body of work as a player. Anyone who thinks Casey is going to just allow teams to run over him are crazy. If you think Reid would seriously allow his dreams of winning it all rest on the shoulders of a kid who can’t possibly handle the pressure, you must be crazy. IF he is that bad, we’ll have a new MLB before week 1, rest assured.

The Browns passed on Clay Matthews, (dad was a browns iron man for 17 years). I was upset to say the least. They needed a LB bad, so this year we pass on Casey in the 4th rd. Pisses me off. I Hope Casey does well in Philly.

Mark my words: It is Matthew’s brain that earned him this spot so quick, and that will likely make him a good player in the NFL. Obviously the Eagles don’t value speed that much at MLB (see: Stewart Bradley), so other than size, Casey really isn’t lacking much for what they want.

Patterson is gone, their Linebackers suck and their corners are horrible on run D.

It’s not hard to see how the Eagles will lose

Teddy Bruschi and Mike Vrabel had wonderful NFL careers and I wonder how they did at the combine. This is football and not Mr. Olympia. How did Gholston worked out for the Jets? I wished my Raiders picked up Casey Matthews. Dude can flat out play. IMO, the best indicator of talent is see how often the player is around the ball. Casey was around the ball a lot.

Lovin all this Eagles hate right now. In fact, I’m pretty sure most of the hate on this site is directed at the Eagles

Fans of other teams are obviously scared shtless right now. Do you all understand how unbelievably dangerous Michael Vick will be this year? I suggest you read this article, here

    http://tinyurl.com/43ps4to

He’s apparently having an ridiculous training camp, and is steadily improving in what was admittingly his greatest weakness, picking up blitzes.

I’d be foolish to proclaim the Eagles are guaranteed to win the Super Bowl, but the odds are pretty god damn close. 8/1 odds in fact.

CAN’T WAIT!!!!!!!! Won’t see em during the season, so hope they can hold up and get back to the playoffs. Remember, teams in the NFC in the recent history are doomed to disappoint the following year.
    ===========================

Why won’t you see em in the season? Different TV coverage? Ever hear of a Sports Bar?

  71. calloustongue says: Aug 8, 2011 12:59 PM

“If Casey is 1/10 the player Clay is…blah blah blah..”

That’s exactly what he is. There’s a reason TT moved up in the first to get Clay and let Casey go by 4 picks in a row where he could have taken him.

Doesn’t have great speed, can’t get off blocks, can’t hold the point of attack, and can’t rush the QB.

He’s got the Matthews name and that’s it. Remember this is a 4th round rookie starting at MLB for a team with Super Bowl aspirations. Forget his last name and look at the tape, he is no Clay.

People the Eagles are much improved on D im not saying there gone to win it but they are in the mix! There D was awlful last year and they almost beat the Pack in the playoffs. The only team i worry about in the division is the Giants. And this melonnhead guy or vox who ever you are Dallas was one of the favs to win last year and you finished with 6 wins! So please shut up till you win a game this year!

How quickly we forget. Quite a few of you need to go back to the tape of the BCS Championship Game and watch his strip of Cam Newton that gave Oregon a shot at winning the title.

50+ yard TDs are a pretty good trick, if you’re only gonna have one.

    @Daddyblack

You’re right Daddyblack, the Eagles will probably score 60 points every week, it’ll be better than playing Madden! They are a team without flaws, probably the best team ever assembled in the modern era of football!!!!!

My point was that it’s far too early to speculate how a team is going to do this season. The Eagles have signed a lot of FA’s, but there’s no idea how that will translate on the field, however Eagle fans are clamoring that this is the best Eagle team ever, and they are unbeatable. Such talk is ridiculous.

As for McNabb, while I’m not expecting the Vikes to make the playoffs, I think they’ll finish at/near .500 ball, and he’ll have a solid year. Eagles fans seem to forget that without Donovan McNabb, they wouldn’t have had any of the past success they enjoyed.

Bottom line, a real and objective fan can see both sides of the football equation, and sadly there doesn’t seem to be one among the fans of the Eagles.

  78. fightingorange says: Aug 8, 2011 2:51 PM

    @Daddyblack

Oh, one more thing, if/when Michael Vick goes down with an injury, and the team is forced to rely on Vince Young, tell me how awful McNabb is. Vince is a baby, he’s too immature to handle the pressure of the NFL, and he’ll ultimately fall on his face. Good luck with that.

  79. fightingorange says: Aug 8, 2011 2:53 PM

Just for the record, I’m not an Eagle hater, and I think Casey Matthews could be a solid pro. But good lord, let’s have a small dose of reality! The Eagles aren’t going to steamroll through their schedule and finish 16-0! I can see them finishing 12-4, barring any injuries to Vick.

    melonnhead says: Aug 8, 2011 10:11 AM

Yeah who needs linebackers, the Eagles can just put 5 corners out there!

    ——————————-

And overrated Felix Jones will still be held to under 50 yards.

  81. zeussuperman says: Aug 8, 2011 5:31 PM

    melonnhead says: Aug 8, 2011 9:57 AM

Considering the Iggs have enough quality DB’s to play in the DIME about 90 percent of the time, does it really matter who the linebackers are?

    —————————————————————–

Actually yes, if you plan to defend against the run at all.

    ——————————————-

And this is where you prove that you’re a Cowboys homer who spends more time trolling Eagles posts than thinking about the Eagles style of play.

The Eagles can’t build a perfect team — but they have an offense that can score quickly, and often.

The Eagles are built to play with a lead. Running on a team who’s got three touchdowns on you is great and all, until your 60 minutes are up and they walk away with the W. Go on, try to pass to make up the TD difference. The Eagles are daring you.

Eagles fans. LOL. Every year, same story. Acting like their teams are invincible.

Im laughin at the idiots who think they’re gonna put up 50+ pts every game. Maclin and Jackson, one trick ponies, press them at the line, their 170 pound bodies ain’t goin nowhere. You think defensive coaches are that dumb?

    ————————–

The Redskins coaches sure seemed that dumb on MNF last year, when the Eagles did exactly that.

But thank you for finally admitting that yes, your team’s coaches are truly stupid.

    Haha!

  83. syndersupport says: Aug 8, 2011 7:17 PM

eagles hoping that their linemen and corners do enough to stop the run…

*M. Vick buised his ribs last year when he met Laron Landry….

I will admit… the skins look like garbage right now… but in the NFC East… seems like the Giants will be the team to beat.

  84. timasahh says: Aug 8, 2011 10:34 PM

    atthemurph:
Who is going to cover Jennings, Driver, Nelson, Jones and Finley? See ya in Indy?? More like see you in Green Bay and then you can go home.

    _______________________________

    Jennings – Asomugha
    Driver – Samuel
    Nelson – Rogers-Cromartie
    Jones – Hanson
    Finley – Pick a linebacker

Then there’s still two safeties up top if anyone needs help. The Pack has a lot of playmakers we know, but let’s face it, they made it last year largely without a solid running game. The Eagles’ defense is set to dominate the pass.

  85. 1bigtex says: Aug 9, 2011 9:04 AM

    @timasahh

Any team that tries to guard Finley with a LB will suffer and suffer greatly for their folly.

  86. briandoell says: Aug 10, 2011 3:54 PM

Well, I’m not an Eagles fan, but I’ve watched a lot of Matthews over the years in the Pac-10…Anyone who cites his so-called lack of speed and size as reasons he’s a bad choice simply haven’t seen the kid play. He’s always around the ball, and he basically blows up teams’ offensive schemes. He absolutely has the intangibles. Solid choice for the Eagles. It’s not the name or the bloodlines. This kid’s a football player, and though it might not be anyone’s preference to start a rookie in the middle, he’s a gutsy, instinctual player who’ll make a lot of plays.
