Pioli did not make all those picks by himself – he worked with Belichik. A fairer comparison is how the Pats have done since Pioli left and how K.C. has done since Pioli got there.

The Eagles signed players that took less than what they could have made elsewhere. They did not overpay anyone.

They were 40 million under the cap and very competitive. Now they are 5 million under and much better.

So, sorry, no overpriced FAs on the Eagles.

Nick Cesario oversaw last year’s Patriots draft while Pioli was making picks in KC, meaning McCourtey, Gronkowski, Spikes, Hernandez, Cunningham, etc. were all his selections.
Pretty successful first time around, I’d say.

His success was built on young low-ego talent. I’m not sure why Belicheat thinks THIS will work.

Should be a fun implosion to watch for fans of the other 31 teams though.

I’m just poking fun, all the reactionary comments the moment any “name” free agent signs a contract are amusing.

However, your comparison of the Eagles to the Skins isn’t very accurate. They have essentially done the same thing as the Patriots on the FA market (if you get to exclude Haynesworth I get to exclude Asomugah). They signed proven veterans for backup/rotation slots to what are essentially low risk, 1 year contracts. If they were overpaying there’s no way that they’d be nearly $5M under the cap. Does it guarantee a SB trophy? Absolutely not, but an exciting season and legitimate shot are much more likely after all their moves.

No receiver gets off the line after getting pancaked by a 300 pounder.

I will give you that the Branch situation was mismanaged by them, no doubt. They shouldn’t have let him seek trade partners and just said, “play it out”. I think they were surprised another team would give a #1 for him, honestly.

For Seymour, yes he was still a good player. Yes their D would have been better WITH him in 09. But the 09 team was a weak team overall mentally & physically. I don’t think they would have gone far in the playoffs either way. And Seymour was never going to be for the Pats again what he is now in Oak, which is a happy player making top money. He did nothing but bitch after they paid him all that money in 05, and was wanting another big deal. I would say it worked out OK for both teams.

@jjarvis: You’re wrong actually. Yes they took a risk on Albert Haynesworth, and so far he is looking great… but that doesn’t change the fact that the projected DE’s on the roster (Cunningham and Moore) have been anything but impressive in camp so far. So why not pick up Ellis, Anderson and Carter on the cheap to provide some competition and get the best out of your players?

Same thing I was thinking, I doubt all those guys make it through the cut.

This is akin to using goal line defense in early football video games and just bumrushing the O-Line on every play.

Old Bill has a new idea for a defense loaded with guys who can play both 3-4 and 4-3 and switch either way with a quick shift as late as possible to keep the O on skates??? Lots of bulk to get lot of pressure …

are all starters from the 08-10 drafts. and of course I don’t have to tell you about guys like Richard Seymour, Ty Warren, Vince Wilfork, Asante Samuel, plus all the high-quality backups we’ve drafted recently, too (Julian Edelman, Myron Pryor, etc)

Yeah, Bill just has no idea what to do with draft picks. Totally lost. Maybe he should take lessons from Fat Rex?

They used their draft picks on Hernadez, Gronkowski and McCourty who helped to get them to 14-2 last year instead of 10-6 or less, like many predicted. That’s a pretty good use of picks if you ask me.

IF your comment is literal, and if you are an Eagle fan, your comment is ridiculous, as this is night and day compared to what the Eagles are doing. The Pats aren’t spending any money to bring these guys in, and they aren’t signing high-profile players (except for Fat Albert, but he is only high-profile due to controversy, not his contract price). Going after all the big name FA’s, and then signing a multitude of other guys is what Philly did. NE is bringing in guys competing for the same positions on the D-line. Philly is doing what Snyder has tried to do – bring in a lot of guys that are high-profile and high paid because they have the $ to spend, and it is SB or bust for Philly (which it always has been, but it has never worked out). I don’t think it will work out this year either. Too much pressure on both Reid and the team, the spotlight will be bright and take its toll, and it takes a perfect storm to win it all – not just signing all the high-profile players because you have the $ to do so.
