Tebow lands at No. 2 on Broncos depth chart

Tim Tebow AP

The good news for Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow is that he has beaten out Brady Quinn.  The bad news?  Kyle Orton apparently isn’t going anywhere.

The Broncos have released their initial depth chart of the 2011 season.  Per the Denver Post, Tebow appears as the No. 2 quarterback, behind Orton and ahead of Quinn.  (Presumably, Tebow responded by telling coach John Fox, “‘ppreciate that.”)

It was believed that the Broncos would trade Orton, and that Tebow and Quinn would battle it out for the starting job.  Some believed that Tebow would win the job.

Including Tebow.

“My dream, since I was a young boy, of being a starting quarterback in the NFL seemed to be coming true,” Tebow told Woody Paige of the Post last week.  “Then, I felt like it was grabbed back away. . . .”

Tebow later said his comments were “taken out of context,” athlete-speak for “how can I quickly and cleanly get myself out of this mess?”

He then had a chance to improve his stock during a weekend scrimmage, and he didn’t.

Given a feather-ruffling report from Peter King of NBC in January regarding Broncos football czar John Elway’s feelings about Tebow, maybe the guy who’ll be traded to Miami isn’t Orton, but Tebow.

The chances of Tim Tebow getting traded are about as likely as you writing a positive piece on Tebow.

That’s Not a Suprise because Orton is still a Bronco.

  6. rolltide510 says: Aug 8, 2011 5:20 PM

I seriously doubt Tebow actually beat out Quinn, they just want to keep selling #15 jerseys.

  7. captainwisdom8888 says: Aug 8, 2011 5:21 PM

Where he belongs. Tebow and his unorthodox style will simply have to earn the job the hard way. Jersey and memorabilia sales don’t catapult you into being the starter…

  8. atwatercrushesokoye says: Aug 8, 2011 5:22 PM

You’re going to start a Tebow to Miami rumor?…seriously?!

I’m not sure why this is even news worthy, it’s an initial depth chart in pre season, lots of things will change.

For example rookie TE Julius Thomas is absolutely killing it in camp and turning lots of heads, but in this depth chart he’s burried as 5th or 6th….as long as he keeps doing what he’s been doing he’ll be the starter against the Faiders on Sept 12th!

  9. jakek2 says: Aug 8, 2011 5:23 PM

this dude needs to check his ego at the door and learn to play TE. Has there been a more awkward QB to ever play? Tebow makes Bernie Kosar look like Peyton Manning.

Both Orton and Tebow will end up playing 8 games this year and then Denver will decide who to ship out. It’s already been written.

  13. screamingsheep69 says: Aug 8, 2011 5:26 PM

Why would you even want to start at QB for Foxball? Run, run, screen pass, punt.

  16. brdnc says: Aug 8, 2011 5:27 PM

Not sure how Elway feels, but I’ve watched John Fox coach the Panthers for the past 9 years, and anyone who thought Tebow was going to be the starting QB had no clue what Fox is about. Also, hate to say it, but unless Elway overrules Fox, get ready for the most boring offensive football imaginable – 2 runs and and then on 3rd down another run or once in a while a pass. Nobody in motion, nothing going on. For additional insight see Steve Smith’s recent remarks about how he always lined up in the exact same place. What a waste of a weapon!
Only hope for the Denver offense is that their running backs are not as good as Deangolo and Jon Stewart, but not sure it would change Fox’s strategy anyway.

  17. sterilizecromartie says: Aug 8, 2011 5:28 PM

Unfortunately for Denver fans, Ordinary Orton isn’t going anywhere. Denver starts the season at home vs Oakland, home vs. Cincy, and at Tennessee. They could actually start the season 3-0 with that schedule. And if they start 3-0 you might as well pencil Orton in as the starter for the entire season… or at least until Orton remembers how ordinary he is and they fall to 5-9. Then they will let Tebow start the final few games.

  18. souldogdave says: Aug 8, 2011 5:28 PM

The Raiders will put Tebow’s head on a stick.Elvis abused and confused him, he’s doomed.BRING IT ON MONDAY NIGHT!!

  19. hobartbaker says: Aug 8, 2011 5:29 PM

There are half a dozen QBs around the league who are #1 on their team’s list who would be #4 on the Bronco’s list. It would be nice if the Broncos could spread the wealth a bit.

  20. nationalmediacansuckit says: Aug 8, 2011 5:31 PM

Tebow was suppose to “save the Jaguars franchise” when they passed him in the draft. I seem to recall someone who runs this site saying after 2010 draft. I feel alot better with Gabbert so-called “saving the franchise” than this guy. Good luck Denver.

  21. goodguyjohn says: Aug 8, 2011 5:32 PM

Semantics aside…Who would you rather watch? Kyle Orton? Dude is BORING! Brady Quinn? Um no.

That Tim Tebowm, when on the field is one of the league’s most exciting players. He can literally pull wins out of his hat. Not many have that quality.

    Go TIMMAY!

  22. junobeach44 says: Aug 8, 2011 5:35 PM

  28. feldman9000 says: Aug 8, 2011 5:49 PM

I’ve said it since Fox came on board, no way in hell he starts Tebow. He hates developing QBs, no matter what Elway wants. He probably just convinced Elway that Orton looked better. Orton is a safe bet at QB, somebody who can hand the ball off and limit turnovers. It’s gonna be a long season in donkey town. Lot of boring football ahead.

  29. wussbasket says: Aug 8, 2011 5:51 PM

can the media get off Tebows nuts? he was great COLLEGE player, he wont and hasnt done anything in the NFL as a player. His throwing motion is just ugly and hes lucky he has Ryan Clady protecting his blind side, DE will take the ball right out of his hand every time without Clady

  30. atwatercrushesokoye says: Aug 8, 2011 5:51 PM

Tatum064: You’re still the Faiders since your fan base is celebrating that 8-8 season like you won the Super Bowl. If you want to lose that moniker you’ll have to break .500, I know it’s been almost a decade but just so you know teams are allowed to do it.

But lets be honest as long as you have the Crypt Keeper running the show all you can dream of is that shooting star mediocre year…I’m sure you’ll be back to 3-13 this year! Then you’ll get to choose between Luck and Barkley, I’m sure The Undead One is having his stop watch calibrated right now so he can do all of the scouting that he needs!

He put up decent stats in mop up time last year. Only a matter of time before he get’s the starting job, then all the Tebow haters will stfu and claim they liked him all the time.

  34. tedc57 says: Aug 8, 2011 6:08 PM

  35. wannabeqb says: Aug 8, 2011 6:10 PM

Every pundit said Tebow would take time to become an NFL QB, I don’t understand why people are surprised it is. He also lost one of the best QB coaches in the league when McDaniels was fired .

So enjoy Orton, Denver, I’m sure its just a matter of time till he wins you a SuperBowl.

Are you serious? The difference is scouts saw a limitless amount of potential when Elway came out of Stanford… hardly anyone sees that from Tebow (except for stubborn UF fans, Tebow fans and deluded Bronco fans who actually think this guy is “the savior”). Get real

  41. garyfromil says: Aug 8, 2011 6:28 PM

Orton was very average with the Bears. He is a serviceable back up QB to somebody. He won’t screw up, but he won’t win the big game.

Tebow is a great leader and athelete; really don’t know yet if he is NFL caliber at QB, or maybe they should give him a shot at tight end. He is a unique talent and most of the NFL likes generic QBs.

Me thinks the Tebow haters hate him because he is Christian. You don’t see anyone hating Muslim players because they are Muslim.

  42. pthompson1187 says: Aug 8, 2011 6:28 PM

That picture makes tebow look like wolverine. lol anyway, tebow is electrifying and if he doesnt get his shot in denver, im sure a team with qb problems will definitely be interested in him. I mean seriously, the cards gave up a second rounder and DRC for kolb hahaha and i have a feeling tebow can outperform kolb. he just needs to be in the right offense, and john fox’s offense doesnt seem the right fit for tebow.

My earlier post seems to be missing, but a few points of clarification for posters above -

@souldogdave – Of course Elvis got to Tim. He was lined up against a second string tackle and was the NFL sack leader 2 years ago. What do you think is going to happen to Campbell on that Monday night?

@wussbasket – Tim is left handed. Clady plays left tackle. Franklin would protect Tim’s blind side this year. Also, Clady was playing hurt last year.

@feldman9000 and others – John Fox is the head coach and does prefer a conservative offense… but the O-coord is the same that Denver had last year in the pass first-run never offense. The offense will likely be somewhere in between.

Finally – Tebow has always been a project QB, even when Josh McDaniels pulled him in. Having time to work and study will only help him. There is nothing bad about this set-up in Denver.

  49. ninjapleazee says: Aug 8, 2011 7:06 PM

Not surprising, but the real losers in this deal are Bronco fans.

In this situation Orton should be the starter.
Unfortunately, it means the Bronco organization has relegated this year to mediocrity.

    1) Hire a mediocre head coach who’s losing seasons are glaring and predominant
    2) Keep a average at best QB as the starter.

Mr. Bolen – did you REALLY need to hire John Elway to achieve that??? I mean – really???

    How utterly disappointing and uninspiring.

  52. mayfieldroadboy says: Aug 8, 2011 7:28 PM

Brady Quinn is the casualty of Eric Mangini’s and Brian Daboll’s love of defense and hatred of offense. In the several years BQ has been in the league, exactly how how has he been coached and how many games has he played? The luck of the Irish has not touched BQ.

Tebow is the Bizzaro NFL player of today. Instead of saying the stupidest things imaginable, he says all the right things.

But unlike many of the players that say really dumb things, Tebow can’t play worth a damn.

  55. Gronckle says: Aug 8, 2011 8:41 PM

Tebow may or may not succeed, but I’m still baffled by the “The Broncos want to win now, so thats why they are sticking with Orton” argument.

John Fox is a smart man. You would have to be a complete idiot to even consider starting Tebow over Orton……with Orton under center the broncos have a shot to win 3-4 games this season.

  61. paulbrownsrevenge says: Aug 8, 2011 10:37 PM

I wonder if Tebow Cries like a high schooler at night, like when Bama clobbered him in the SEC title. The day Tim Tebow becomes a viable starter in the NFL, I’ll start believing in god.

  62. acapucini02 says: Aug 8, 2011 10:59 PM

There was all this hype during the lockout because Tebow played average in the last 3 games of the season last year. He expected to be handed the starting job and he when he didn’t get it, he pouted about it. Orton is the better of the two and Brady Quinn actually out played Tebow in camp. The only reason Tebow is number 2 is so that his pride isn’t hurt and if they put him at the number 3 the media would be blowing that up. In conclusion Tebow can’t be an everydown quarterback and he better hope that Orton gets hurt, otherwise he is going to be holding the clipboards on sunday.

  63. bigcountry49 says: Aug 8, 2011 11:17 PM

    @Silvercrush
I understand your argument that starting Tebow over Orton may be a bad idea. However, the first six words on your post make you sound like the most ignorant NFL fan ever. The day the Panthers let Fox walk was one of the greatest moments in franchise history.

My thought on the QB situation in Denver is simple, whatever the best decision is, Fox will do the opposite (see Delhomme, Jake)

  64. beauregard says: Aug 8, 2011 11:22 PM

Wow, from a pre-season depth chart, before even the first pre-season game you football geniuses have determined that Tebow is a no talent bust that sucks beyond all that that has ever sucketh before.
Tebow makes for any easy target, especially on this list, for those trying to showcase their football knowledge (or total lack thereof). Yes, this means you.

  65. bemsqua says: Aug 8, 2011 11:25 PM

For all the people acting like Orton is the solution here……….he won three…….let me repeat, he won THREE games last year! It’s funny how people, analysts, etc. want to brush that under the rug. It was suppose to be the breakout year…..second year in McDaniels offense. Orton is not the answer for this team. Tebow may not be either. At least give him a chance……you know what you’re getting with Orton.

  66. mmmpieyummy says: Aug 8, 2011 11:26 PM

He’s number 2 only because Fox has no cajones and wants no part of the media storm that would surround the Messiah entrenched as number 3.

He has been clearly out-played by both Orton and Quinn…but it is what it is, right John? Wonder how Brady is feeling right now…come on PFT, I want to know how pissed Brady Quinn is!

The Media is against him, most people are against him (judging by comments sections), and the people who wanted him in Denver are gone. @ pftequalsgreatjournalism- I don’t know if he will succeed or fail. All I know is that it was said from day one that he was a project. Now he is a project under a new regime (Elway/Fox) that may not even want him. Everything is stacked just right for him to fail, so it won’t surprise me in the least if he does. But I say give it time. Like I said, he’s a project. A project that had the highest rating of any rookie QB last year, and runs like Peyton Hillis.
