Cowboys backfield up for grabs after Felix Jones

T. Choiceauto

The Cowboys thought they were deep at cornerback and running back heading into training camp. The NFL often has a way of eliminating depth before the season starts.

With Terence Newman hurt, the Cowboys could be re-thinking their decisions in the secondary. And their “deep” running back group has been depleted by injuries to rookie DeMarco Murray and Tashard Choice.

Murray hasn’t practiced at all and he won’t until next week. He’s on the non-football injury list. The third-round pick could never stay healthy in college, and we’re not sure why the Cowboys were so confident that would change in the pros.

Meanwhile, Tashard Choice is out 2-4 weeks with a strained calf muscle. Tim McMahon of ESPNDallas.com thinks Choice is at risk of not making the team. That’s the bad news.

The good news is that second year undrafted player Lonyae Miller has reportedly looked great camp, especially in pass protection. It wouldn’t be a shock if he climbed all the way to No. 2 on the depth chart.
