Crabtree expected to miss entire preseason

Michael Crabtree, Kyle Williams AP

The 49ers signed Braylon Edwards last week in large part because they have no idea what they are going to get from Michael Crabtree.

The third-year receiver has been walking around training camp with a boot on his injured foot. Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com writes that the coaching staff thinks Crabtree may be “ready” late in the exhibition season, but the staff is likely to hold him out into the regular season.

In the same article, Maiocco points out that Ted Ginn has probably been the most impressive receiver in 49ers camp.

On the downside: Ted Ginn has been the most impressive receiver in 49ers camp.

    Welcome to bust central Michael. Population – You

    Are we not men? WE ARE DIVA!

    Probably a good call to hold him out. He was a positive boon to the Seahawks in last year’s opening-day Niner defeat. Dude had a pass hit him square in the hands, he bobbled it, and it was picked. Seattle scored on the next play and the rout was on.

    What are you trying to say with that last sentence..Ginn has been the most what?

    Sounds like Crabtree needs some high quality HGH.

    I feel sorry for Harbaugh, he chose the wrong bay team to coach. The Raiders have much more talent, they just need to be coached up.

    I think what he was trying to say was that on the downside Ginn has been the only reciever in 49ers camp

  11. destructicus says: Aug 9, 2011 11:41 AM

    Take it from a Dolphins fan.

    Ted Ginn is the most impressive WR in training camp cause he’s not worried about getting hit.

    In a few weeks the headline will read “Crabtree expected to miss entire season”. I’ll bet the 49ers wish they could have a do over on that draft pick.

  15. 7to10for6allday says: Aug 9, 2011 11:55 AM

    Who didn’t see this guy being a bust?? Wow, he had best written all over him from day 1. He sucks!

  16. ryanf61 says: Aug 9, 2011 11:56 AM

    49ers season boils down to one question: is smith or kaepernick a legit starter in this league?

  17. marcsasharc says: Aug 9, 2011 12:00 PM

    its seriously a comedy show reading all these comments. hes legitimately hurt yet all the comments are about him being a diva and a bust. he had a darn good season last year considering the circus around him. he isnt the best WR but hes definitely talented would be at least the #2 WR on your favorite team.

    so many haters. carry on!

    Don’t count on it, take it from a Fins Fan, he
    always looked GREAT in practices. as soon as
    the REAL HITTING starts, he looks for the
    side lines or just drops to the ground. dude is
    a BIG WUSS!!!!

    @marcsasharc

    Completey agree. So much hate..the guy still has a chance to be a very good WR in this league. Calm down with all the negative comments and stop believing all the drama you hear from these internet “media” sources. Crabtrees personality is one of a introvert who although isnt a bad guy, seems to come across that way sometimes. Cant wait until he blows it up in the next few years.

    That whiny punk always finds a way to get out of doing the work.

    Diva.
    Cut him and move on. He doesn’t bring enough to make the headaches worth it.

  22. bambam1982 says: Aug 9, 2011 12:14 PM

    Don’t Matta. Crabtree and Braylon gona put up some big numbers under Harbaughs West Coast Offense this year.

  23. gojags says: Aug 9, 2011 12:15 PM

    As a jags Fan, I would say Gene Smith had done heckua job taking Eugene Monroe over Crabtree. I know on the draft day everyone (including Kiper’s, McShay’s) were routing to pick Crabtree and Gene Silently deferred and picked a solid (Not great yet) OT with value on that pick.

  24. nyyankeedave says: Aug 9, 2011 12:28 PM

    He’s just waiting for a quarterback. Watch.

  25. dmackdaddy says: Aug 9, 2011 12:33 PM

    At 1st I thought it said the ENTIRE SEASON. This is normal. I rather see him rested and eventually catching on as the season goes. We’ll be ahite. 10-6 NFC West Champs.

  26. phelbin says: Aug 9, 2011 12:44 PM

    @marcsasharc, it’s hard to believe the legitimacy of his injury. Year one he held out into the season because he thought he should be paid like the higher draft pick that he thought he should have been.

    Year two – injury just before preseason and suddenly better for week one. But of course it took a few weeks to get up to speed…you know, what the rest of the team was doing during the preseason.

    And now he suddenly is injured again? No surprise here. And just like last year it’ll take 3-4 weeks of the regular season to get up to speed…what the rest of the guys are doing right now.

    He’s not injured. He thinks he’s above practice. It brings Alan Iverson’s “talking about practice” rant to mind.

  27. jackfnburton says: Aug 9, 2011 12:57 PM

    Has Crabtree EVER attended training camp? This kid is the master. I bet he got someone to take his SAT’s for him. People, you could learn something from this guy.

  28. labrownjames says: Aug 9, 2011 1:04 PM

    TED GINN (OHIO STATE)
    vs.
    braylon edwards (michigan)

    GO TEDDY!!

  29. souldogdave says: Aug 9, 2011 1:12 PM

    Smith will be throwing to the other guys a lot, Crab won’t have decent stats this year, even if he gets “healthy”.

  30. FinFan68 says: Aug 9, 2011 1:13 PM

    they have no idea what they are going to get from Michael Crabtree.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Sure they do. They will get a talented but lazy receiver who feels entitled and will exaggerate an injury to avoid petty things like training camp or practice. 1 more year before he holds out again. The 49ers are getting about 1/2 of the receiver that Crabtree could be if he had a good work ethic or a desire to excel
  31. sj39 says: Aug 9, 2011 1:14 PM
    Did they ever get a QB?
  32. dgforreal says: Aug 9, 2011 1:18 PM
    Just to clarify, I have nothing against Crabtree, but missing these activities every year are missing opportunities to unlock potential.
    He’s good, I want great (we all do) and you don’t get that missing the preseason activities.
    Is he hurt? Is he faking? Doesn’t matter. He needs to be participating in these activities and if he can’t stay healthy then that should be a red flag for anyone that has the team’s best interests in mind.
  33. granadafan says: Aug 9, 2011 1:44 PM
    As a Niners fan I want him to succeed. As a realist, I suspect there’s a screw loose in his head and thinks he’s better than he really is. The problem is he put up flashy numbers in a gimmick offense in college. Players from spread offenses, QBs or WRs, tend to be busts in the NFL. This was a terrible pick. They didn’t do their homework, as usual, on what a cancer he’d be in the lockerroom.
  34. briank1ne says: Aug 9, 2011 2:34 PM
    ok hes injured. thats fine. be injured. the only reason that everyone is calling him a bust is because hes a total *ssh*le. He talks trash on his qb. he held out his first year. He held out at player initiated training camps this year And this will be the third consecutive season that he missed both training camp and preseason… I mean for real? YOU’RE KILLING US!
  35. nicktheprick650 says: Aug 9, 2011 3:30 PM
    Let’s just all go out and buy him a pair of pink high heals cause this guy is a straight DIVA!
  36. ceadderman says: Aug 9, 2011 3:47 PM
    Don’t rush things Crabtree. Wouldn’t wanna you getting your cervix sprained coming back too early.
  37. 7ftgriff says: Aug 9, 2011 4:57 PM
    Dude is injured, he’s still at all the practices and meetings learning the new offense, yes he’ll have to get into game shape but this year is not him trying to get out of anything. Plus the 49ers don’t need for him to be a pro bowler just good enough to keep the Great Vernon Davis from getting doubled or covered By starting Corners. Fans are way to impatient with player developement now, I mean look it took Brandon Lloyd 6 years to finally catch on but now there’s not a team in the league who wouldn’t want him.
  38. TheDPR says: Aug 9, 2011 6:12 PM
    I can’t remember a year since Ted Ginn entered the league that he hasn’t had a solid camp and preseason. It is just that when the real games come, he goes. Dropped passes, wrong routes run, etc. Dude should have been kept on special teams – at least he’s a decent returner.
    RB – niners
    OL – iupati alone is better than any raider OL man
    TE – lets no even mention it. niners
    CB – no more asomugha .. deff niners
    S – Huff or whitmer.. let me think.. DUH!! niners
    LBs – lets see.. willis or mcclain? tough huh? LOL
    DL – i guess symore wins this one.. but justin smith is right behind on this one.
