Coughlin: A “long haul” until Steve Smith is back

New York Giants v Houston Texans Getty Images

Free agent wide receiver Steve Smith visited with the Giants early this week in an effort to update them on his status.

This much is clear: Smith is expected to return to the Giants (eventually), and he’s not expected to help their team anytime soon.

“It went well. He seemed really upbeat, the guys were excited to see him,” Coughlin said. “It’s going to be kind of a long haul for Steve, so hopefully we can cut through some of that and see where it goes. It was good, though.”

Coughlin wouldn’t say whether he thinks Smith will play at all this year following microfracture surgery. His agent told Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger that they are in no hurry to sign.

It would be a surprise to us if Smith was on the field before midseason.  While the Giants are strong at wideout with Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham, Smith’s loss will especially be felt without tight end Kevin Boss to pick up the slack between the hashmarks.

That’s really a shame. Smith is such a clutch guy for the Giants. He deserved a great contract this year. Hopefully he heals fast and comes back soon.

Steve..give it up..take what they give you and get back to work. If you had a better option you would have chosen it by now…The season is about to start…

why would he hurry back to a team in the basement of the NFC East?

  5. godofware says: Aug 10, 2011 1:53 PM

This guy was always where Manning thought he was going to be! Without him and Boss their is no security blanket for Eli. Nix and Manningham are good at what they do but possession receivers they are not. Giants will struggle to get first downs.

Sorry to hear this , hope he comes back strong and Healthy. I don’t like to hear about anybody getting injured and threatening thier livleyhood.

Can you not read? Smith had microfracture surgery and may not even be able to play this season. Right now, his options to play are nil.

No doubt this will add to Eli Manning’s interception total, which is already through the roof.

Bummer for Smith. Very promising player who has frustrated me many times. Here’s hoping he heals well and stays with the team.

Giants made a huge mistake not signing someone like Derrick Mason. He would have come cheap and filled the 3rd and 7 need perfectly.

eaglesowngiants says: why would he hurry back to a team in the basement of the NFC East?

Better question – Why would ANYONE play for the ONLY NFC East team that can’t win ONE Super Bowl, let alone win multiple ones like the other three have? Plus, imagine having to sign autographs for the barely literate trailer trash that follows the Eagles! Their only accomplishment in life is collecting enough empty beer cans to buy a ticket to watch a team that can never win the only game that really counts. And don’t forget “gourmet” food in Philly is thinly sliced cat meat covered in cheese whiz and throw between a bun. Those poor guys must take twenty showers a day trying to get the stink of Philadelphia off their bodies.

  20. jakek2 says: Aug 10, 2011 2:55 PM

Giants should sign Housh to fill the Smith role until Smith is healthy.

East 96st, Every fan base has Illiterate trailer trash fans ( see djstat ) This is all talk , we’ll see what happens when the season starts . hopefully nobody else gets hurt and we can have a good NFC EAST knockdown ,Drag out game like in the past. Good luck .

  23. pftlhp says: Aug 10, 2011 3:37 PM

    djstat…

We all know how many trophies your team and the others have. Congrats. Must be a great feeling as a fan. As for the Santa booing incident, you, and countless others don’t know the context of the situation that day. The real story is actually quite funny but media and gossip has reduced it to a generalization of Philly fans. Good luck this year…

dawkphan – Just having a little fun with one of your trolls. Got nothing against Philly. Spent a lot time there when I went to U of Delaware and my best man at my wedding was Philly born and bred. Doesn’t mean I’ll eat those damn cheesesteaks, though.

“y’all” in Philly can’t speak English correctly…. all “den” teams in the NFC east are going to make all your Philly big splash moves look totally useless. Write that down…. Oh wait….

I don’t know — let’s ask Michael Vick, Nnamdi Asomugha, Ronnie Brown and Cullen Jenkins?

They all chose the Eagles over other teams.

A Giants fan thinks the last truly historic game his team played in was the biggest Superbowl upset of all time. But, they’re wrong.

The last historic game the Giants played in ended with the first walk-off punt return in NFL history. You probably remember it (the rest of the league certainly does). It’s why you’re so bitter at and scared of the Philadelphia Eagles.
