if you put those guys in the hall then like 5 more guys from every franchise would be in. and you act like people have an agenda against the Raiders organization. maybe not so much nowadays, but the franchise has been popular in the NFL for most of its history so quit acting like your Raiders are getting snubbed. you just sounds dumb.

um what? Haley was a top 3 pass rusher in during his career. he was intrical in 5 super bowls. 5 super bowls. 1 more time, 5 super bowls. he was dominant and clearly recognizably dominant. not in the top 20?

Haley was the best pass rusher on teams that won a total of 5 Super Bowls. While probably not the greatest DE ever, pass rushers are considerably more important than punters. I doubt that there is a head coach anywhere in the league who would take a great punter over a dominant DE given the choice. I do believe that the symptoms of Haley’s, at the time, undiagnosed medical condition have played a part in his exclusion.

I remember watching as a kid as Ray Guy boomed those high punts and the returner backpeddling further with the coverage team blasting him because there was so much hang time to get to the returner. Everytime the Raiders had to punt, you knew the other team would be stuck with lousy field position. Put Ray Guy in the Hall of Fame. Punting is a less glamorous position but still is part of FOOTball.

I went to the HOF fame when Al Davis was inducted and met Ray Guy. One of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. I agree with everyone else that Al Davis should help him out. Its a shame Ray Guy isn’t in the HOF. Voters are morons.

@3octaveFart: No… the common denominator in “all” my problems is not me. However, the common denominator in “bad” decisions are me. You missed my point entirely. I’m not absolving Ray Guy of anything. I’ve been fortunate to be around NFL players from the 60′s and 70′s when their careers’ are over and like “tatumo64″ said in his post, alot of those guys need help. Many didn’t have drinking or drug problems. But you can look all across the league and many of those guys lives just ended up tragic based on career success and not preparing for life after football.

Bench players today are making more than those guys did in their highest paying years. This is why we hear such a stink by the retired players. They are the reason these young players can get what they get. And back then, their was no guaranteed anything. No holding out, no bonuses, no free agency, nothing like that.

Mike Webster, HOF center, died homeless. Dave Dalby, one of the best centers the Raiders ever had, same thing and he was in his van when he died and he was on all 3 Superbowl teams. My brother-in-law had a medical file as thick as a phone book, foot amputated, arthritis… Earl Campbell is in a wheelchair and makes no public appearances. and when these guys are done, their is no healthcare, no outreach programs, nothing.

So I view it from a different perspective, that’s all.

This is too bad. I got the chance to get to know Ray while working at his annual punting and kicking camps. He’s a heck of a nice guy and seemed to be doing well for himself with his affiliation with the camps that bore his name and other endeavors he was working on. Good luck, Ray. You’re a class act.

It may be sad. But why is it he “ended up” in this kind of trouble?
Odds are he made decisions that brought this trouble on himself. Or as the trouble started to appear failed to make the right corrections.

The teams should teach the players how to handle personal finances? Well maybe the players should realize that maybe they should take the time to learn how to handle money.

You want to say you cant convince a 22 year old of this? Well was not 22 his entire playing career. If he is good enough to be argued about being in the HOF, he was in the league long enough to know longer be an irresponsible “kid”.

Plus I dont buy that a 22 year old cant be expected to be responsible when making large sums of money.

We are all to quick to make excuses for people who screw up instead of pointing out that they screwed up and use them as examples to teach others what not to do.

Tragic. But an indication of how the retired NFL guys really needed help according to Ditka. Some ex-players were homeless and that housing crisis was no joke. Lester Hayes had an issue with his rings , too.

The deal is we don’t know why he had to sell the ring, and having a course in personal finances is a smart move for teams to offer, however try to sell that to a kid with candy jar eyes is a hard sell. Bill

Hey Dirtdawg55, this isn’t about your redneck hater ways, it’s about a person who has come on hard times, have a little respect for others even if you have no respect for yourself and the ignorance you prance around in! Ray Guy was a great asset to the game of football and the history that he helped create. He may have made a shambles of his life after the game, but that doesn’t deminish the fact that everyone deserves to have a little compassion directed their way.
