Robert Kraft hints deal with Mankins could be close

Logan Mankins, Robert Kraft, Matt Light AP

Patriots owner Robert Kraft spoke with reporters on Wednesday, getting emotional at one point when he talked about how the Myra Kraft Giving Back Scholarship fund has already raised more than $3 million in honor of his late wife.

Before that happened, Kraft broke a little news.

The Patriots owner said a deal that would make guard Logan Makins a “Patriot for life” could be finished “soon” according to multiple Boston writers on the scene.  We can’t imagine Kraft would say this publicly considering the history with Mankins unless the deal was essentially done.

If a deal happens, it’s a reminder that ugly contract talks can always end well if the player is good enough.

UPDATE: Here’s the quote:  “Probably you’ll see our good friend Logan Mankins will be signed up soon, hopefully to be a Patriot for life.”

Mankins deserves $10 million a year for the rest of his career if he is truly valued correctly.

Good luck in your contract negotiations, Logan. I admire your willingness to stand for what you believe in.

mankins deserves it, hes really really really good. Very versatile, he can single up and block most dt’s in passing downs and he pancakes people on running plays, and hes not a fatty like some other guards but very strong and uses great leverage. I’m an eagles fan btw.

  5. ampats says: Aug 10, 2011 2:21 PM

Great news!Just keeps getting better. I believe he said the same thing about the labor negotiations and we shall soon be reading about Mankins being a Patriot for life.

Let the season begin, Pats LOCKED & LOADED

  6. cengelman93 says: Aug 10, 2011 2:27 PM

Mankins, Solder and Vollmer should be a solid nucleus for their line for years to come if they keep them healthy.

  7. ampats says: Aug 10, 2011 2:28 PM

After this season Pats the Patriots O line in 2012 will look like:

Solder,Mankins, Koppen, Cannon and Vollmer with Tom Brady under center

Pats will be drafting heir apparent to Koppen.

  8. bradybbgoat says: Aug 10, 2011 2:29 PM

    Finally!!

The Pats Oline was 100% better when he came back last year.

    Pay the man!

Ok this is totally off topic, but am I the only person in this world that yesterday read the header “Panthers WR Steve Smith carted off field with finger injury”??? And second, am I the only one who still to this minute is wondering what I missed here??? I know my wake and bake session doesn’t help but im really confused here.

  11. tedmurph says: Aug 10, 2011 2:32 PM

Great news, but he doesn’t deserve 10mil, JEvans makes 8.5 this yr.

  12. citizenstrange says: Aug 10, 2011 2:36 PM

Interesting that Kraft said “our good friend” instead of “my good friend.”

Apparently Logan Mankins is a made man.

  14. ourbaskets says: Aug 10, 2011 2:46 PM

hey humbleminded – Smith cut his finger and he was carted off, but only for a ride to the training room where he was xrayed..all is well…should only be out for a week or so.

@bradybbgoat: Actually the O-Line performed just as good, statistically, without Mankins.

Now, Mankins brings that extra spit to the fight that can’t be measured statistically, and that’ll be welcome for a long time to come :-)

Thank you New England Patriots for your steady hand at running a football team. Thank you Bob Kraft for being a man who welcomes players back to be honored for their time here. It takes a big man to operate this way. Those who hate the team are missing a lot of good that goes down in this organization. By the way, John Tomasi stills bits the big one.

Always gonna be overshadowed by Spygate, no matter how long you Pats fans kick and scream. And Kraft was aware of what was going on, of that there is no doubt.

Thank God! Logan Mankins is worth every penny he gets no matter how much money they throw at him. The guy is a beast and brought a whole new element to our running game when he showed up midway through last season. One thing that will always stick out to me about Logan is the fact that he held out for the first 7 weeks of the season last year and then showed up 2 days before the game with the Browns and was ready to rock and roll and stepped right back into his starting position and performed lights out. Once the deal is done, Mankins is the best free agent signing of 2011 no matter what.

  24. capesquad says: Aug 10, 2011 3:52 PM

What an amazing couple weeks the Pats have had… combine that with picking up Solder, Cannon, Vereen and Mallett in the draft and the future looks bright in NE.

  25. skinsrock says: Aug 10, 2011 3:52 PM

Nah, the only people hanging on to that is the hater, it’s their security blanket. The Pats paid the price for every other team because they were the big fish in the sea. The fine was handed down and Goodell moved on, not wanting to expose all the skeltons in the NFL closet. BB is a great coach, but if you think he was the only one doing it, you are a fool. Didn’t he win “Coach of the Year” in ’07 & ’10, both post spygate? Time to move on dude.

And that’s why players across the board wanted Kraft at the negotiating table, because of his great reputation. And he got it done, heavy heart at all.

Oh no!!! Not more “Spygate” minutia… Hey Bozo vinegar & water in a squirt bag guy, I can’t imagine the F5 diaper rash you must have by reliving those three gleaming Championship Lombardi Trophies (yes plural) the Patriots own (They should have four, the ball hit the ground on Tyree’s helmet catch.).

The Patriots did nothing wrong by taping opponents, as a matter of fact, they still do, just like every other 31 teams in the league. They were just standing in an unauthorized area…that’s all. Even the Commissioner said that his initial reaction may have been too harsh once he realized the depth of the problem league wide.

  31. CKL says: Aug 10, 2011 4:23 PM

I’m pretty surprised this looks like it’s going to work out actually. It’s looked u-g-l-y for a long time. This has been an offseason of weirdness player wise for the Pats though so I guess I shouldn’t be that surprised.

More like they should have NONE. Have fun with your vinegar and water genital bath though, sorerearpelvis. The Pats got the largest fine in NFL history plus lost a first-round draft pick. The evidence was so incriminating that Goodell had to destroy it to cover for his buddy Kraft. All of the excusemaking in the world will never wash away the stink of Spygate. But keep on crying about it while the rest of us laugh at you pathetic fools.

I dont see any Patriots fan in here crying- However, I do see MANY Jets fans crying when they are crowning themselves champs in June but fail to get anything year after year. No Divisional Championship, No Conference Championship granted they have been there twice and but nothing to show for it. So while you say the Patriots are one and done- guess what? Your team is watching from home too. But I have had enough of you. I will keep reading your idiotic posts and keep laughing at your non-sense.

Oh yes, the laughter is deafening! Can, can, can barely type it sooo loud. Who exactly is laughing, haters? Who cares? Meanwhile, players continue to come to NE because it gives them the best chance to win a ring and everyone else praises them for being a model franchise.
