Steve Smith signing adds spice to Eagles-Giants rivalry

With the Eagles pulling another out-of-the-blue signing of a big-name free agent, one of the biggest and best rivalries in the NFL has gotten a little bigger, and better.

As MDS has pointed out, receiver Steve Smith, seemingly taken for granted by the Giants, has joined forces with the self-styled (by backup quarterback Vince Young) “Dream Team.”

And then there’s this.  In June, while Eagles running back LeSean McCoy and Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora were going back and forth, Smith jumped in and pointed out that the Eagles have an empty trophy case.

Now, Smith has defected from the franchise with three Lombardi trophies, joining the team that Smith recently has taunted about winning none.

  1. Can’t wait to see these games. The game where Jackson returned that game ending punt was ridiculous (the scowl and tongue lashing Coughlin gave Dodge was priceless). NFC East games not involving the Redskins are usually pretty solid.

I see a lot of bad NFC West football, so…

  2. This guy had Microfracture surgery. He’ll never be the same. It will act up and he will miss loads of games. He may not even make it on the field this year to play against the Giants.

  3. Well cowboy88–if he plays in midseason, that’s a bonus–but he WON’T be playing for the Giants, and that takes away Eli’s safety net on 3rd down–now he;s missing Boss AND Smith–and who’s to say the Eagles won’t re-sign him after this year after they demonstrated to him how much they wanted him?

  4. Mara and Tish just don’t give a sh!t !!

    And why should they?

Fans are still buying PSL”s and tickets

    Idiocracy in Action.

  5. please stop bringing up this damn dream team thing! just when you think its going away some uncreative journalist throws it out there…1 guy said it…1 freaking backup! young said it when asked about signing with the other free agents and he was laughing when he said it.

i am a die hard eagles fan and they are not a dream team, they are a solid, young team that needed these veterans…veterans which they’ve gotten for low risk-high reward deals…don’t forget that the eagles let all but 1 of their free agents go and if you can add former pro-bowlers to be backups at a good price, why wouldn’t you? not only are they quality depth, they can provide knowledge of the game to this young core of talent. now i’m just waiting on a lb, but i think they want to see how the kids do against the physical play of the ravens.

  6. I was hoping the Cardinals would jump on the opportunity to sign Smith, but I’m just glad he signed with somebody.

He is a talented receiver and has proved he can perform.

It’s not like he was looking for a big contract.

  7. “Dream Team” …… right

Let’s “bookmark” this thread, and see how the Iggles fans make excuses when their season ends before the Super Bowl begins.

  8. I’m an Eagles Fan, its funny though when I click on Steve Smiths name in this article the only info I get is for the good receiver who happens to be in NC. That shows us how relevant this guy is…

    REDSKINS’ 2010 DIVISION GAMES:

    September 12 Dallas Cowboys W 13–7
    October 3 Philadelphia Eagles W 17–12
    November 15 Philadelphia Eagles L 28–59
    December 5 New York Giants L 7–31
    December 19 Dallas Cowboys L 30–33
    January 2 New York Giants L 14-17

4/6 were one-possession games. If there’s one thing about the East every fan should know, it’s that it’s always a battle. It’s hard to believe, but west coast fans are worse than west coast teams.

  10. Dream Team is played out. Backup QB who has a history of being an ignorant ego-maniac said it. Lurie squashed it. Yet, you continue to use it to sell rags.

  11. Lol everyone keeps hyping the Eagles, forgetting that they don’t have a real QB on the roster. Vick?? Really? Dude’s over 30, can’t stay healthy, and kind of sucked during his prime.

Oh, and he’s also a soulless a-hole who laughed as helpless dogs were torn apart, prodded, tortured and drowned. He’s reading from a good script now, but just wait — just wait. He has no soul; he’ll screw up again.

  12. Eight of Steve Smith’s 11 career touchdowns were in the red zone.

In ’09, he had 61 catches for 1st downs, seventh-most in NFL.

  13. XVII, Do you even KNOW any west coast football fans?? What makes you think your hometown or what coast you live on makes you any better of an NFL fan?? Seriously, your a dip$#**!! I think Rex Grossmans’ predictions today have you all pumped up.lol. Aww, how cute?

As I was reading your post I was thinking to myself “How could he possibly say the Eagles don’t have a QB? Vick was amazing last year and covered up allot of flaws on the team that is not there anymore for this year. And then I came to your last pharagraph about the dog fighting. Aha! You don’t really think Vick sucks or you are just swayed that way because your just a hater. Seriously kid? You let your hate sway your reasoning? Listen we all know Vick did, he was punished for it already so if your gonna keep on about it then maybe its you that needs to get hidden from our society cause its people like you that ruins the world. I hope to god your kids don’t do anything wrong because even if they “appear to of learned from it” and do the right thing ever since, you’ll always hate them… that’s the reasoning your showing… Get real kid…

  15. @str82dvd
As far as i’m concerned, Vick IS in his prime, and was a candidate for MVP last year just behind Brady. What you saw in Atlanta was not Vick in his prime, that was him with his Randy Moss attitude. In Philly, he brought his Jerry Rice attitude.

No one cares, really, especially the Niners fan. Your team BLOWS and everyone, including you, knows it.
Possession games? A loss is a loss, nothing else matters. And your team are LOSERS!

  17. A yo str82dvd, you sound like the rest of these hypocrites bashing Vick for what he done in the past. Stop acting like you never did anything wrong. Acting like people can’t change. As for “sucking in his prime”, he’s in his prime. He threw for over 3,000 yds., rushed for over 600 yds., 21td passes and 9 rushing tds in only 12 games. Only Tom Brady beat him out for MVP. And by those idiotic remarks, I’m questioning whether you have a soul since your remarks were heartless and full of hatred.

  18. For d’Gints, the Rent was too damn high!

And even if the Eagles ARE renting players for a run, they won’t be screwing any future by trading draft picks OR effin up the cap.

  19. Anyone who picks one team in he league and says they won’t win isn’t really saying much. My two year old can pick a team that probably won’t win the SB.

We all know only one team wins every year.

Pick the winner and you will impress us.

  20. I cant wait until this season comes and all you people who consistantly seem to think that the Eagles are going to choke, when in reality you wish all these players would choose your team. Of course we think were going to win. #Nnamdi

The Niners fan was the one saying NFC East games were good, except Redskins games. I was just pointing out that most people would call a one-possession game a good game. You’re right that they lost four of them, but that wasn’t the point.

It’ll be poetic justice if Vick goes on IR early on and VY will be the one running the show for another Eagle choke job

    ——————————-

    Poetic justice for what?

For you being a butthurt little baby, absolutely terrified of what a healthy Eagles team can do to your team?

Yeah, I guess if that’s what “poetic justice” means, you’re right on the money.
