Ahman Green officially retires

Ahman Green AP

The Green Bay Packers’ all-time leading rusher is calling it a career.

Ahman Green will formally announce his retirement at Lambeau Field tonight, the Packers have announced.

If you were under the impression that Green was already retired, you’re not alone. But Green had considered playing this year in either the UFL (with the Omaha Nighthawks) or the CFL (with the Montreal Alouettes) before finally deciding to hang up the cleats.

Green played in 1998 and 1999 with the Seahawks, from 2000 to 2006 with the Packers, in 2007 and 2008 with the Texans, and then finished his NFL career in 2009 by returning to the Packers. Overall Green had 2,056 carries for 9,205 yards and 60 touchdowns in his NFL career.

Green will be a sideline analyst with Big Ten Network this year, starting with the season opener of his alma mater, Nebraska, on September 3.

I would like to take this opportunity to announce my retirement from my High School football team, for whom I last played in 1984.

I enjoyed your career Ahman, a.k.a. “Batman”!! Thanks for the memories… I’ll never forget your final TD against the Seahawks. A fitting end to a great career!! Just wish you could have earned a SB ring with the Pack. Goodluck with your broadcasting career!!

If it weren’t for Jamal Lewis, Ahman Green’s 2003 campaign would be one of the best all time (just watch some of his highlights from that year he was unbelieveable).

Forget Mike Vick, when I bought madden 04 as my first ever videogame, Ahman Green was my favorite player.

  7. tjacks7 says: Aug 11, 2011 4:02 PM

Good career, but I honestly don’t remember him being in the league since he left the packers.

  8. jooceman says: Aug 11, 2011 4:05 PM

Ahman Green didn’t “consider playing” for the Montreal Alouettes this season but decide not to. He was CUT by the Alouettes on June 5.

Nevertheless, this guy was a beast once upon a time.

You’re not kidding. I thought that retired at least 3 years ago. Anyway, he had a solid career, and I wish him the best in his post-retirement endeavours.

It’s fitting that he announces his retirement in Green Bay, considering thats where his career ended.

It is you who is the idiot …..

” As his loyal fans are aware, Green sports a Batman tatoo on his leg and is an avid Batman fan with an extensive collection of related comic books and posters. ”

In GB, Ahman Green was always known as “Batman” …..

  20. ilpackerfan says: Aug 11, 2011 4:27 PM

This reminds me of all the Packer fans who were ticked off that Ahman Green was allowed to leave by Ted Thompson. They just couldn’t understand why such a great running back wasn’t worth keeping.

Ted apparently proved himself on that one, let a 30 year old running back be signed by another team, and he was never the same. Just think if the Packers had kept him around.

If mike sherman had just trusted you with the ball at the 4th and 1 on the eagles 40… it wouldn’t have been 4th and 26 it would have been 4th and 1 that was the pivotal down.

  26. tonymandrich says: Aug 11, 2011 5:09 PM

Ahman was a man’s man and gave it all for the Packers. I know he regrets leaving GB for Houston in 07′ but at least he got to come back and break Jim Taylor’s franchise record since he was less than 50 yards short when he left. Thanks for the memories Batman!

  27. juliusanonymous says: Aug 11, 2011 5:20 PM

It’s interesting that Mike Holmgren got so much flack in the media for trading Ahman Green to Green Bay and drafting Shaun Alexander to take his place.

    Career stats:

Shaun Alexander: 2187 carries for 9,453 yards and 100 TDs.

Ahman Green: 2056 carries for 9,205 yards and 60 TDs.

Looks like Holmgren really did know better than all those pundits and their predictions.

AAAARGGGGHHH.. They were both referred to as Batman, you idiots! Ahman Green was infatuated with Batman, and Ahmad Carrol’s nickname was literally Batman! This is nothing a simple google search can’t confirm, numnuts.

  30. 2ndaryinsanity says: Aug 11, 2011 5:31 PM

I thought he retired back in ’07-’08 while he sat on the Texans’ bench collecting a paycheck. Not his fault, really- it was our dumba## G.M. who signed Green. He was a beast for the Packers, though.

  31. juliusanonymous says: Aug 11, 2011 5:38 PM

Can you imagine if Batman dropped his bat-rope the way Ahman dropped fumbles? Oh no!!

  32. mistersmith22 says: Aug 11, 2011 5:56 PM

The media tried to reach his long-time backup, Najeh Davenport, for comment on Green’s career, but he was unavailable as he was in the middle of pooping in another pair of shoes.

  33. packfannchitown says: Aug 11, 2011 6:11 PM

Congrats for retiring as a Packer Ahman, (as compared to The Favre who retired as a Viking).

  34. juliusanonymous says: Aug 11, 2011 6:19 PM

So if Ahman Green was Batman, would that make Najeh Davenport his Robin? Holy loaf in the laundry, Batman!! Robin just dookied in your bat costume!

As long as you are around, I’ll never be the true “Assclown”. That’s your title here.

Besides, “assclown” has got to be one of the stupidest “insults” in the history of insults. It literally has no real meaning and is merely a lame cobbling of two words that are also used to insult people. Anyone who uses that silly term on a regular basis should be shot for showing their own stupidity.

Couldn’t find a reference regarding Batman on Wikipedia, but I found this interesting tidbit:

“Green was named after former NFL wide receiver and current broadcaster Ahmad Rashad.”

So, not only was he an idiot, but his parents couldn’t even get Ahmad Rashad’s name spelled correctly to pass along to their kid. LMAO

Ditto on Ahman. Thanks for the great memories of watching you play in the Green and Gold!

On tatertot, given how things played out, I’m glad he has retired as a Viking, and unless he were to eventually wake-up and apologize for his self-centered, me-first behavior (regarding his old team not to mention his wife and however many female textees there really are), I hope the Packers never retire his number.
