Disturbing details emerge of stabbing at Brandon Marshall’s house

Brandon Marshall AP

Police decided not to charge Brandon Marshall’s wife Michi-Nogami Marshall for a domestic incident back on April 22 which she was arrested for.

The story was downplayed publicly by Marshall (understandable), but a group of unreleased incident reports uncovered Thursday paint a troubling scene of the day in question. Elgin Jones of the of the South Florida Times did the legwork and found the following details in the police report:

1. Nine police officers showed up on the scene. They found a “large pool of blood” in the foyer of the house and multiple trails of blood leading throughout the house.

2. Marshall had several clean cuts to his wrist and to his abdomen.  Nogomi-Marshall had a bruise on her left check.

3.  A bloody 13-inch kitchen knife was found laying next to a bloody magazine clip from a firearm on a table outside Marshall’s office.  Blood was also found on a variety of clothing.

There are a lot more sad details here, but you get the idea. Marshall has since revealed in an emotional press conference that he has Borderline Personality Disorder.

Mental illness is nothing to joke about. We’ve seen some ridiculous and ignorant statements said about Marshall in the last two weeks, especially related to his how the illness will affect his football career.

The details in the police report indicate why Marshall and his wife have been kept apart by police, and why Marshall was so in need of treatment.

We hope Marshall can continue on his path to recovery and health. It’s rarely a straight path, and it’s never easy.

The guy’s always been a nutcase but hey, you gotta give credit where it’s due. The first step to recovery from any illness is admitting that you have a problem. Hope everything works out for this guy.

Yes, the Steelers only want players on their team with undiagnosed mental illnesses.

Well, except for Mendenhall, he’s been diagnosed with verbal diarrhea

  11. deadeye says: Aug 11, 2011 1:58 PM

Obviously Marshall didn’t fall on a vase, only a sucker would buy that explanation. The only other viable explanation for his injuries is that he repeatedly fell on a set of Ginsu knives.

  12. caine23 says: Aug 11, 2011 2:00 PM

I am not trying to mean by saying this, so please dont take offense but…

Maybe the game football, with all the head injuries is not something a person with mental illness should be playing.

I really hope Marshall’s story does not end in a made for tv movie.

Ricky Williams suffers from a similar type of disorder and I think that Brandon should reach out to Ricky or vice versa to sit down and talk. If nothing else, give him a list of individuals that helped Ricky get back on his feet and let the professionals take it from there. It is painful to watch Brandon (and I can only wonder about Chris Henry as well), but it was painful to watch Ricky Williams so scared of the cameras he had to where a helmet with a tinted face shield just to survive an interview. Remember how many in the media, including some here, bashed Ricky at the time for being arrogant but now knowing the situation, it is only sad. Sad for Ricky, sad for Brandon and sad for Chris but mostly sad for the media who seems to think that any dirt they can find, any personality flaw they can find, any illness they can find in a professional athlete makes the reporter more of a man and lauded for rolling around in someone else’s dirt and excrement. You make money, but face it, you still come up smelling like crap and most of you media people are such scum I wouldn’t let you near my wife or daughter and and if you guys were in town, I’d lock up my dog.

  36. sneschalmers says: Aug 11, 2011 2:11 PM

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy has been very successful in treating those with Borderline Personality Disorder, which is notorious among psychologists as being among the most volatile Axis II disorders.

Given the fact that he announced that he was dx’ed with BPD tells me he has been seeking psychological services, which is very encouraging. It’s often difficult to get individuals with BPD in the door to treatment. With continued treatment, I see no reason why he couldn’t keep playing football. If anything, taking football away from him (a man who has carved out a large piece of his identity as a football player) would be more detrimental than anything else.

  37. imsmarterthanyou says: Aug 11, 2011 2:12 PM

I honestly don’t understand why it’s necessary to report on the details of something that I’m sure Marshall hoped to keep private.

Don’t you think that he’s going through enough trauma just dealing with the situation alone?

Now he’s got the this cloud hanging over his head and he’s probably wondering “what people really think of him.” For someone who is dealing with the issues he’s dealing with, additional stress is not welcome. Sometimes, a story is worth passing up.

    Give the guy a break…

  38. georgeanderson2 says: Aug 11, 2011 2:16 PM

Good job ,Dolphins, keep sending him out on the field. Get the guy some help, take hm away from the field. Show for once that you actually care about your employees. His life and well being is more important than wasting his time on the field with Chad Henne this season.

  44. plundergrunge says: Aug 11, 2011 2:18 PM

That’s a crazy passionate relationship. And that’s not a joke.

My in-laws have come close to things like this before. Immaturity and intense love can do this. Clearly Marshall (and probably his wife) have issues.

Some relationships are honestly like something you’d see in a teenage emo love drama.

  45. greenbaypeckers says: Aug 11, 2011 2:18 PM

I really believe this stems from the denver teammate, Darrent Williams who died in the arms of Javon Walker a few years ago, Marshall was one of the shiite disturbers in the club, neither player has been ‘normal’ since, Javon Walker is gone and Marshall is clearly dealing with some demons. No idea what kind of person Marshall was, or even is, but I think that incident could be the elephant in the room.

  46. capslockkey says: Aug 11, 2011 2:19 PM

Makes you wonder about the real truth behind the whole slipping on a McDonald’s bag and cutting his arm in the entertainment center incident while he was in Denver.

  47. steelcitypoonslayer says: Aug 11, 2011 2:19 PM

Prescribe him some pot and get him a qb already, all of marshal’s personalities are wasted in Miami. Hopefully they Cut him and the steelers can get him

“Ugh, the people ripping him need to get a grip. He needs help not ridicule.”

    ================================

I completely agree with the above statement. People making fun of Marshal are like people who make fun of the holocaust. Laughing at other people’s misery is cruel.

  49. Chuck Wood says: Aug 11, 2011 2:21 PM

BPD is not a joke. My gf has been diagnosed w/ the illness. It is hard to be in any kind of relationship with someone with Borderline- but I can asure you… the person with the illness is in the fight of their life just to live. Many people with BPD are in extreme, constant, emotional pain. They may resort to self mutilation- also known as “cutting”, to help calm the emotional pain for a little while. It’s not necessarily an attempt at suicide, so much as a cry for help. It’s not necessarily that the person w/ BPD wants to die… rather that they just want the extreme emo pain (amplified anxiety, depression, sadness) to just go away.

That said… here’s to you Brandon Marshall. I cannot relate to what you are feeling- but I certainly understand it. I am amazed that someone with such a severe mental disorder has made it as far as you have. Kudos.

On July 31, 2011, Marshall announced at a 2 p.m. EST press conference in Miami, covered live by The NFL Channel, that he has been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and hopes to spread awareness and understanding about the disease, which he repeatedly referred to as “BPD.” Marshall said his entire professional career and adult personal life has been marred with symtoms of BPD, but only recently through treatment has he learned to consciously and effectively deal with the resulting problems of his actions that have been influenced by BPD. Marshall cited a recent study that suggests at least 35% of male prison inmates nationally, and 25% of female inmates, have been diagnosed with BPD. He said he hopes to help reduce the “stigma” of BPD, and encourage and lead others with the disease to receive the proper care
it was revealed that Marshall was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder at Boston’s McLean Hospital after his incident with Nogami-Campbell. He is currently pursuing treatment for his mental illness and filming a documentary about his struggle.
