Plaxico Burress will undergo MRI, shut down until Wednesday

Plaxico Burress AP

Jets coach Rex Ryan downplayed Plaxico Burress’ ankle injury on Thursday, saying the receiver would play in the team’s preseason opener. Burress hasn’t practiced full speed at all, but he returned late Thursday for limited work in the afternoon session.

And apparently he aggravated the injury again.

Burress will now be shut down until Wednesday, according to Ryan.  He won’t travel with the team to Houston because the team is worried the flight could bother the ankle. He’ll also undergo an MRI to make sure everything looks good.

The Jets can put any spin on this they want, but Burress hasn’t been able to work at full speed at all.  He hasn’t been able to put together consecutive “limited” practices and he won’t until August 17 at the earliest.

They have to be somewhat concerned.

  20. benh999 says: Aug 12, 2011 1:09 PM

What a joke. Sometimes I wonder how much football personnel people really know when they offer a guy in Burress’s situation a fully guaranteed multi-million dollar contract.

The Vick comparison is idiotic. Vick was released from prison in his prime and signed for less money to a very team-friendly contract. Burress was released from prison two years after his production began declining. Why a team would pay him, but not TO or Moss that kind of money is incredible. The very fact that NYJ paid that much means that at least one other team was willing to pay almost as much.

Yes, he may turn it all around, but he probably won’t. How many receivers have taken two years off in their mid-30s after declining and came back to be impact players?

  21. nahcouldntbethat says: Aug 12, 2011 1:13 PM

So by signing Plaxico Burress the Jet forced themselves to bring in Derrick Mason in case Plaxico wasn’t ready to go and in the process lost the services of Jerrico Cotchery.

I would LOVE to hear you explain how the road to the SB goes through the Jets? I’m an Eagles fan and I still have the coherence and adequate brain cells to know the road to the SB goes through the team that won it the previous year. That’s not rhetoric, that’s fact. Like it or not, the road to the SB goes through Green Bay. The off-season is the off-season regardless of acquisitions… no one is named champ in August.

  24. hooks024 says: Aug 12, 2011 1:19 PM

He didn’t practice throughout the entire 2007 season because of ankle problems. We all saw what he did then. But he’s older, skier, and 2 years removed from the game. Him and tiki should have both ended up in philly, then they’d definitely be the keep dreaming team. Go blue.

  25. jakek2 says: Aug 12, 2011 1:20 PM

For all the flack the Giants are getting for letting FAs go (O’Hara, Seubert, Cofield, Boss, Smith, Plax), Cofield and Boss are the only ones likely to play week 1 and Boss hasn’t made it through a whole season yet. In corporate America, that’s called trimming the fat. The Giants have become leaner and meaner.

Brad smith gone. Best PR/KR on your team.

Edwards gone. Plax won’t be his replacement in production.

Cotchery was a decent #3, nobody to fill that role now.

Oh wait you signed Derrick Mason! Hold on let me get his wheelchair…..

Shaun Ellis went to the Pats because he didn’t want to play for the Jets.

Tomlinson (only one LT and he played for the Giants) is old and won’t be as good as he was last year.

And you still have a pretty boy QB who can’t win a game.

    ===============================

    LMFAO #2 in NYC???
What have the Giants done lately? The Jets are clearly the better team in NY right now. It’s a no-brainer. Even jrkoff Francesca admits it. They jets are better at every position. And the pretty-boy Qb is 4-2 in playoffs and went to 2 championship games in his first 2 yrs. Granted, they still got more work too do and get to the superbowl, but come on…Admitted, the Giants do have a better winning history, but you can’t actually believe the Giants are better than the Jets right now? Maybe so, since it’s coming from a typical jealous Giant fan who can’t comprehend the better team in NY are now the guys in green. Get real.

  34. prestigew0rldwide says: Aug 12, 2011 2:10 PM

I agree with the earlier statement about karma. They have had great talent on this team that wanted to work hard without big contracts, but they foolishly let all the up and coming go for former stars who are past their prime years. Leon washington gone, add L.T. Braylon Edwards gone, add Buress. Cotchery gone. add mason. At least two of those veterans are hard working professionals but I dont know what they are doing. They will do alright this year because their defense will win games for them, but they have definitely downgraded their offense and will not have enough production tomgo as far as they did last year. Rex was so proud of getting L.T. because people doubted his ability to produce. I think since he proved tombe valuable he went overboard this year with that school of thought

Oh wait, that’s the JETS season going down the toilet. Maybe, the JETS luck has finally run out. Maybe, they”ll get Miami’s injury luck now. Miami was only team that only had one starting Offensive lineman play the entire year. Playing the majority of the year with third string players. Just maybe now, the true JETS can be assessed. Let’s see how good Sanchez will be now.

  44. RexCanCoach says: Aug 12, 2011 3:32 PM

Yeah, yeah, yeah, heard it all before.

Last year Edwards and Cromartie are bad seeds, they will implode and the Jets will go back to 6-10 record.

Now its Plaxico sucks, Sanchez sucks, the Jets suck.

And Cotchery and Ellis are both going to Canton, right?

Jets ground and pound, will win a lot of games again with outstanding defense. And a solid running game. And yes they will make the playoffs. What happens then is anyone’s guess I am sure Patriot fans didn’t expect their 14-2 team to be upset last year.

But one thing we all do know, Sanchez is a terrific playoff QB.

  45. jakek2 says: Aug 12, 2011 3:38 PM

Gotta love how Jets’ fans conveniently forget that if the undefeated Colts did not forfeit two years ago, the Jets would not have made the playoffs that year.

As long as Brady remains Pats’ QB, the Jets are nothing but a forgotten wildcard team. Brag, guarantee SB wins, lick feet, whatever….you’re team is still the red-headed step child of NY (just like how the E-gals are the rhsc of the NFC East).

Witty post but this is where I must respectfully disagree. The SB literally goes through the team that secures home field advantage throughout the playoffs. That part is really the fact. Where we can agree, is that the SB isn’t going through the Jets under your definition or mine. LOL.

Hey Jets fans, want to make some Haynesworth comments? Ellis comments? Because obviously you focus more on hating other teams than trying to figure out your own.

Jets are doomed this year. Spent too much time on Asomugha when they didn’t even need him and signed a WE fresh out of jail when they should have focused on keeping their core stable. Perfect example of an off-season as to why the Pats always remain on top and the Jets will always pray for a playoff spot.

As a Pats fan from NY, I hear tons of crap obviously, but I still have respect for the Giants, so good luck Giants fans.

    Jets fans, grab your tissues.

  54. sirkeeb says: Aug 12, 2011 11:35 PM

he’ll be fine. he’ll have an average season, i say like 700 yards and 5 TDs because it will take him 4-5 games or so to get used to the offense and everything else that comes with coming back to the NFL. Especially with his circumstances ie; jail, injury, getting in shape, learning the offense, etc. But his raw skill will get him a few TDs based on fades to the back of the end zone and pure jump balls on mismatches.

  55. sirkeeb says: Aug 12, 2011 11:38 PM

BTW he is concerned that the flight will aggravate his ankle injury because due to the altitude, cabin pressure, etc, there is a higher risk of it swelling up more than need be. if he’s not playing, why have him travel? its just a preseason game. we don’t need to bring a cheerleader along.
