Rex Ryan makes Santonio Holmes a captain

In most cities, the players vote to determine the captains.  When it comes to picking the captains of the Jets, coach Rex Ryan is the king.

Ryan previously has identified quarterback Mark Sanchez as one of the team’s captains.  Also on the list are receiver Santonio Holmes, defensive tackle Sione Pouha, cornerback Darrelle Revis, and safety Eric Smith, who’ll serve as the special-teams captain.

“This is something that I chose and I chose these guys based on what I see on the practice field, the game field, the classroom, their leadership, what they mean to their units, the pride and everything else,” Ryan said. “How come not [linebacker] David Harris?  How come not [safety] Jim Leonhard?  This is just what I chose. I just feel this is right and this is what I’ve noticed.  You look at the offensive line, Brandon Moore, Mangold, D’Brickashaw [Ferguson] all these guys [could be captains], but I just feel good about these captains.”

On offense, Holmes likely got the call over one of the linemen as a gesture of positive reinforcement.  Remember, Ryan enlisted Commissioner Roger Goodell to rip Rex in front of Holmes in order to help the two men develop a connection in 2010.  And given that Holmes served a four-game suspension in 2010 under the substance-abuse policy, he likely remains one bad Friday night away from a one-year suspension.

Presumably, Ryan thinks that having the “C” on his jersey will help Holmes resist the urge to roll up a “J”.  Allegedly.

  1. Let’s see…. Who should be captain? Well… This little one went to market, this little one stayed home……

Other than Harris a bunch of me me me me guys

Just like their coach! What a Control Freak!

  3. mikey, you sound doofy when you use marijuana references….are you the nerd that really never tried the sacred herb? if not, try it, the players look ten feet tall when you watch a game in hd.

  4. Hmmmm…. Bart Scott? Too stupid……. Cromartie? Too many illegitimate children….. Sanchez? We’ll overlook the teenage obsession and give him the nod….. Holmes? Why not?

  5. I agree with bill bellicik when he says picking captains is the most foolish thing and has no significance whatsoever…but then again he isn’t a 2-time defending superbowl champion like Rex

  6. Santonio perfect team captain, gets a huge contract, most guaranteed money for a WR of all time, and posts pictures of himself working hard to earn that money: NOPE a picture of him chuggin a bottle of cristal. HAHA

  7. Look, the ONLY reason Rex made Santonio a captain is because Rex figures that if he loses Santonio at wideout, having lost Braylon Edwards, and Burress as a big question mark, he had to put pressure on Satonio not to screw up and get suspended for a year. So he makes him captain so that Santonio would not want to fail in that role. If he does, the whole plan goes “up in smoke”, doesn’t it?

  8. This is exactly why the Jets are a joke. Holmes, despite being the Super Bowl MVP was run out of the ‘Burgh for blazing one too many jay’s. However, in NY, he’s not only embraced and welcomed, he’s a freakin’ Captain without ever having been voted into the role. Over guys like Mangold, Ferguson, or Tomlinson? Are you serious with this, Rex??? Actually, what can you expect from a guy who cuts Jerrico Cotchery so he can sign Plaxico Burress??? What’s the matter, Rex, you have somethin’ againts law abiding, hard working, dependable players??? Jackass…

  9. Of course, the players, busting their asses daily on the practice field and in the games KNOW who
    the leaders really are…
and Rex is saying that if he lets the players choose
(as teams usually do) they won’t select the guys
HE wants. Weird. More bizarro Rexy junior psychology crap…

  10. Has Rex offered any explanation (perhaps in his book) for why he chooses the captains rather than letting his players do it? Just curious.

As for Santonio, he has his faults, but he’s a big cheerleader on the sidelines. The guy really wants to win and likes to rev up the people around him. I can see why he and Rex would be a good fit in that regard, in addition to the positive reinforcement angle you mentioned.

  11. It has always been tough to be a jets fan, now it is becoming a Joke.

But then again that’s all they are is a Joke.

The jets will be a 8 win Team this year!

  12. @deb

He uses captains psychologically. Santonio was the only team captain playing Pittsburgh, ect. Sanchez and Revis getting the C are no-brainers, Eric Smith and Santonio are justifiable, but Pouha leaves me scratching my head. Harris should have gotten that. Pouha is a good player and stepped up for Kris Jenkins nicely, but Harris is great on and off the field.

  13. another day and another jets ‘story’ here on pft. i honestly dont know what you guys would write about if not for rex and the jets. you should pay them royalties or something.

    You are correct… BB is a 3-time defender…

I guess you put your foot in your mouth there. Or was that coach Rex’s mouth?

  15. I think it stinks when players dont vote for the captains themselves. It smacks of grade school gym class.

oh so you’re really a jet fan but you’re disheartened? good one. i’ve been a jet fan for a long time but the last couple of years have been very ‘easy’ years to be a fan by comparison to years before. alot of fun actually. either way, if they have a bad year now (like the 6-10 you all predicted last year or the 8 wins ‘at best’ predicted this year), it’ll suck. but i’ll still be a fan.

it just struck me how desperate so many of you sound.

ok alot of the time the rex jokes seem kindof pathetic. but every once in a while …..

  19. @dwnhillwhaler;

funniest post all pre-season. Made me laugh for a few minutes! Thanks.

To Yets fans who get a woody from a story about Rex Ryan picking team Captains; Bill Belichick would say “Captains? Hell, I don’t care who my guys pick for Captains, I’m busy figuring out how we’re gonna win this next game”.
