Cutting Ochocinco wouldn’t come cheap

Jacksonville Jaguars v New England Patriots Getty Images

We’re not surprised by the rumor that the Patriots could cut receiver Chad Ochocinco or defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth before the start of the regular season.  Four years ago, a similar rumor was making the rounds at about this same time regarding receiver Randy Moss, another big-name veteran whom the Pats had acquired for a mid-round pick and a restructured contract that paid out, in relative terms, peanuts.

But Ochocinco isn’t making peanuts.  Despite multiple reports that Ochocinco’s restructured contract has a non-guaranteed base salary of $1 million for 2011, multiple sources with knowledge of the contract advise PFT that Ochocinco received a signing bonus in the amount of $4.75 million and a workout bonus worth $250,000.  (This year, due to the absence of an offseason workout program, workout bonuses were earned simply by reporting for work.)  And so if the Patriots decide to cut Ochocinco, they will have sacrificed the draft picks (fifth-rounder in 2012 and sixth-rounder in 2013) that were sent to Cincinnati for his services, along with $5 million.

Though the base salary doesn’t become guaranteed until Week One, cutting Ochocinco before the start of the season would permit him to keep the $5 million and then to sign with a new team, keeping the money he got from the Pats and the money he’d get from his next team.  And so, as we reported the day the deal was done, Ochocinco will still make $6 million for 2011, if he’s on the New England roster as of Week One.  (If he isn’t, he’ll make $5 million plus whatever his next team would pay.)

In all, Ochocinco’s new three-year deal has a base value of $12.2 million.  With incentives tied to receptions and Pro Bowl appearances, he can make another $5.3 million.

None of this means that the Pats won’t cut Ochocinco.  But if the goal is to dump him within the next four weeks in order to send a message to the locker room, it would be one hell of an expensive lesson.

As to Haynesworth, the Pats would lose only their fifth-round pick in 2013 by cutting him.  Haynesworth received no bonus money, and his base salary of $1.7 million doesn’t become guaranteed if he’s not on the Week One roster.

Of course, this doesn’t mean Haynesworth will be cut.  The purpose of the rumor could be to ensure that Haynesworth and/or Ochocinco are fully committed for 2011.  If that’s what the purpose of the rumor was four years ago regarding Moss, it definitely worked.

UPDATE:  Actually, Ochocinco earned the $250,000 workout bonus from the Bengals.  So the Patriots are paying him only (only?) $5.75 million.

To Adam Schien, Skip Bayless, Matt Williamson, and every Kool Aid drinking Analyst out there, here you are, once again, you have been proven WRONG!!

Haynesworth does not want to play football, OLD-CHO-CINCO, is getting no passes thrown to him at Pats practice by Brady who has chemistry with Welker/Gronk/Branch/Hernandez/Woodhead.

didn’t understand the moves, still don’t, but good riddance.

  5. red513 says: Aug 14, 2011 2:28 PM

How much you want to bet this “rumor” got started by someone with the Jets, trying to screw up the chemistry?

One NFL “Insider” makes a comment to Pompeii and the headlines are Cutting Ocho.

The Pats just paid him 4.5 million bonus last week to cut him.

Ochocinco and Haynesworth will be Pro Bowl players this season.

  8. vbe2 says: Aug 14, 2011 2:30 PM

Something tells me that if the rumor was to keep them in mental shape, they’d both be thinking “well if I get cut I’ll just go to the Eagles”.

  9. jf203 says: Aug 14, 2011 2:31 PM

OCHO and Haynesworth have nothing left….Belichick is throwing SH** against the wall hoping it sticks..but none of it is….these 2 , Carter, Ellis or Warren will all be non factores this year…..Joke pickups if these guys had anything left they would still be on their respective teams

  10. nflwatcher says: Aug 14, 2011 2:33 PM

Seems like you called 31 teams to find 1 unnamed NFL executive to speculate that they might get cut. I guess a rumor has to start somewhere.

  12. eaglesfootballfan says: Aug 14, 2011 2:36 PM

The Patriots took a chance on these 2 guys who have had problems the past couple of years. Chad Ochocinco loves all the attention ( social media, interviews, twitter, etc) and Haynesworth has a problem being in football shape. Why trade for the guys and then cut them.

  13. steelnucs says: Aug 14, 2011 2:36 PM

Cmon… This is a non story.

Belechek and the patriots don’t need to sign and cut these guys send a message. The organization demands respect from its players. Heck look how long moss stayed in line. Much longer than 3 weeks in Minnesota.

Both fat albert and chad will be on the roster. Everyone, including the pats, wants to see what chad and Brady can do.

  16. Patskrieg dot com says: Aug 14, 2011 2:39 PM

Cut him based on what? I was at training camp yesterday and he was there running routes with Brady until about a half hour after practice ended. He’s been getting 1st team reps, and in constant communication with Brady in between reps.

This off season is not starved enough for stories that we need to start making things up. Come on guys.

  17. tombrookshire says: Aug 14, 2011 2:40 PM

Confusing!! Has 85 been acting up? Since when does a team pay $5 mil to send a warning shot to the rest of the team? I could see if they were in disarray, but this is one of the most professional and disciplined squads in the entire league. No need for message sending here, right? So what is the substance of this post?

    “hobartbaker says: Aug 14, 2011 2:22 PM

Posting the second best season of his career last year wouldn’t really be a good indication that the “window is starting to close.”

In fact, his best seasons as a pro have been 3 of the last 4 (the 4th of the last 4 being the one he missed due to injury).

Got any more theories you want to share?

  19. chadinkc30 says: Aug 14, 2011 2:42 PM

Exactly, it’s amazing to me how they can sign some of these players they do every year, and get NO criticism over it. Same ol’ story. “The Patriots are a class act, winning organization that makes only smart moves, trades, and draft picks” SO ANNOYING!

    @hobartbaker

What makes you say the Tom Brady window is starting to close? I mean yeah, it can’t last forever, but he has shown NO signs whatsoever that he can’t keep playing at a high level. Obviously with each passing year it closes in a sense, but it’s not like he is getting worse. Just wondering what you mean exactly.

They will not cut Ocho, no way.

  29. chargerdillon says: Aug 14, 2011 2:50 PM

Neither will be cut unless age has caught up to them. I see Haynesworth going if anybody, as soon as Bill sees him doing anything short of being a hardworking veteran he’s gone.

Chad has always been willing to go over the middle and take some of the most punishing hits from guys like Ray Lewis as I recall one last year that most players wouldve been carted off the field, Chad held on to the ball, got up and told Ray good hit. Can’t coach toughness like that

  30. threegriffons says: Aug 14, 2011 2:51 PM

    –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
I don’t really care if the media says all the stuff about “Pats have class” etc. A lot of them are lazy and parrot each other. And regardless of the team, each one has media critics and/or knob polishers regardless of the actual moves made.

What’s important is what the players say and regardless of their pasts (and believe me I am pretty skeptical about Haynesworth) have regularly and before they were traded there expressed liking/respect for the organization. Will they back up their respect by doing what BB wants them to? Who knows? Dillon and Moss expressed undying love for the Pats and both to an extent became issues after their first great year in NE. The fact is if they live up to their respect with their actions or not is what will be the difference, not what the media says.

Oh and “btw” we are aware how many years it’s been since the Pats won a SB. Did you know that even the ones they won were tainted by OMGZ!!!!1111!! CHEATERZING!!!!! too? (insert eyeroll here…I need Deb to tell me the code for it :D)

My money’s on “multiple sources” meaning “they talked to Charlie Casserly three times”. :)

  45. jpolston90 says: Aug 14, 2011 3:55 PM

Hmmmmm I seem to remember people saying Randy Moss wouldn’t do jack in NE. Vick wouldn’t do anything for the Eagles. Texans should have taken Reggie Bush. Get the point? People need to shut up. Ocho has repeatedly offered his hand to Brady but Brady is a snob and turned away, according to reports, yes I made the snob comment because I’m biased and not a fan of the pretty boy “grown up” Justin Bieber. I’m not a huge fan of Ocho, but you have to realize, Carson was a huge factor to his lack of stats, not to mention Ocho was still pretty heavily covered even with T.O. pullin down the grabs. Palmer hasn’t been stable since he went down hard years ago. If the pretty boy starts throwing to Ocho like he should, he will blow up and do well, then you will see Weller blow up again as well. As for Albert, he wouldn’t still be on the team if he was being lazy and it’s being said he tears through the lines in practices and has been doing well in the weightroom. Everyone bashes Albert for the Washington mishap, but you can’t place all of Albert’s lashing out on him. He was made promises and painted a picture that were key incentives for him to sign, and the organization blackballed him. Should he have manned up? In my opinion as a former athlete, yes. As a business person? He had every right to be majorly pissed off. Dislike this post all ya want, I really don’t care. But I will laugh when Ocho and Albert post good stats this season, for whatever team they end up playing on.

  47. red513 says: Aug 14, 2011 4:03 PM

There’s no way Belichick would try to use the media to motivate his players. It’s not his MO. He hates the media and never tells them crap. Now, Shanny might pull a stunt like that, but BB is way to straightforward to pull some behind-the-back stuff like that as a motivational ploy. Like him or not, there’s no way this stuff came from the Pats. Most likely it came from a rival trying to stir something up.

All evidence so far is that both players are fitting and and playing well. This story is nothing.

That was with Carson throwing the ball to him. Now he has Brady. I remember in the playoff game, Chad burned Revis and Palmer completely over threw him for what would have been an easy TD.

I’m not saying Chad is going to have a huge game against Revis, but he will have a much better game against Revis this year than he ever had with Carson as his QB.

To hear the way some of you reference the Patriots, you’d think they weren’t the most dominant franchise over the last 10 years. In fact, they are. Make all the excuses you want but anyone who is a fan of the other 31 at some point has sat down and wished they had our coach, owner or quarterback. Remind how bad they are next February when Mr Kraft hoists the Lombardi trophy over his head for the 4th time

The Pats got exactly what they deserve. They overpaid for a disgruntled receiver who doesn’t want to play anymore. At least they didn’t sell the farm to get Haynesworth. But if they are surprised by the “performances” of these two then the Patriots brain trust has fallen very very far.

Tom Brady could be cut this week too.
