Rumors fly that new Umenyiora deal could be coming

New York Giants v Washington Redskins Getty Images

We don’t traffic in rumors as much as we used to, even though these stories appear in a file known as a “Rumor Mill” (go figure).  Instead, we now try to chase the rumors down and corroborate or debunk them.  So that they can be presented as hard news.  And thus “confirmed” (and ignored) by some of the various other news outlets that we routinely credit, even though we could do the same thing.

And so, for old time’s sake, here’s a rumor that will get the New York media chasing this one down for the purposes of corroborating or debunking it.

There’s talk in some circles that Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora soon will be getting his much-desired new deal.  It’s possible that the scuttlebutt traces to the fact that Umenyiora is returning to practice without a new deal already in place.  Unless he has undergone a dramatic change of heart, he wouldn’t cave without getting something from the team — especially since he declined the team’s offer to enhance the last two years of his current contract.

We’re not reporting that it will or won’t happen.  But there definitely is a rumor on the NFL grapevine that something could be coming.

Great, now my beer will be $15 at the Stadium.

  3. jdandcoke says: Aug 14, 2011 11:49 PM

if he plays for the giants, we have another very good DE. if he gets traded, we have extra picks next year….one pick probably being pretty high.

    whatever

That “something” coming is Jason Pierre-Paul. Osi’s fighting for his job now.

  5. phillyphever says: Aug 14, 2011 11:58 PM

Or he’s coming back to practice knowing the new game is against Chicago and their O-Line.

  6. realdraftgm says: Aug 14, 2011 11:59 PM

the team is alot better with Uminyora because picks do not always turn out good and odds are even if they did get a second rounder or first rounder the plyers would never reach Uminyura already high ceiling.

  7. realdraftgm says: Aug 15, 2011 12:00 AM

If they do not plan to pay him or resign him then trading hiim is a better option to have a lpayer around for the long haul but paying him top doller is a better idea; if not then send him to the Falcons for a second rounder.

    Gates for Osi….

I’m kidding, relax. lol Only in my dreams.

I wonder if that “deal” is to another team?

  11. lotusfather says: Aug 15, 2011 12:33 AM

Trade his ass. Pierre-Paul looks to be the real deal and he deserves a chance to start.

  12. berniemadoffsides says: Aug 15, 2011 12:35 AM

We’re probably looking for a TE via cuts, not by trading Osi.

  13. cubano76 says: Aug 15, 2011 12:39 AM

Osi better sign. Jason Pierre-Paul is no joke.

  14. shoestorm says: Aug 15, 2011 12:44 AM

    Solid facts.

  15. tucknrolle says: Aug 15, 2011 12:44 AM

If there is a deal, I don’t think we are goIng to see big money or added years. I think it’ll just be a little extra that Osi is willing to except now that JPP is a threat.

  16. Manbearpig says: Aug 15, 2011 1:00 AM

Osi is overrated. Kinda like the much-discussed yet rarely successful NY Giants.

    Jason Pierre-Paul. Nuff said.

You’re not as important as you think you are Osi.

Once again its those classy Giants fans tossing a life long Giant who was the BEST player on their team last year under the bus because “the other candy bar has a shiny wrapper”

Once again Stay Classy New York !

Exactly right, JPP is gonna be a beast, trade O$I while we still can. I’ll be shocked if they give him a big deal. I’d much prefer they give him the boot.

  21. sinister23 says: Aug 15, 2011 3:29 AM

Has the NFL really became boring to the point we are discussing wheather a rich guy may or may not get richer? Wheres PLAX or BIG BEN when ya need ‘em, huh? “concealed weapons in a bathroom stall….just sayin.

Pierre is a scary man breathing down Osi’s neck. I hope he dominates this year.

  23. bailey76 says: Aug 15, 2011 6:17 AM

Enough already let’s get to work

  24. kom2k10 says: Aug 15, 2011 6:24 AM

Why would u pay a fragile star player more money, after you already renegotiated his current contract??

He chose to take the up front money, and now he’s mad that the back end years arent paying him enough… Tough! You cant have it both ways…

  25. eaglesfootballfan says: Aug 15, 2011 6:32 AM

Don’t do it giants. This guy is injury prone. He won’t live up to the contract if you pay him big bucks.

  26. manuich1 says: Aug 15, 2011 6:34 AM

JPP is going to make alot of headlines this year, cant wait to see him, on the field. The kid is a freak of nature. He gets to the QB alot quicker than most DE’s. Just a backflipping freak.

  27. 7to10for6allday says: Aug 15, 2011 6:36 AM

jdandcoke you’re an idiot. You’re not getting multiple picks for a 30 something guy that has a bad knee and has all those health issues. Teams were hesitating on even giving one 2nd rd pick. Now I see why you always hate on the eagles posts. You’re a delusional giants fan. Can’t wait to piss on your team again. 0-7 and keeping it rolling…go eagles!

  28. gobs56 says: Aug 15, 2011 7:43 AM

    @7to10for6allday

I won’t pretend to know what teams will give us for Osi, but dude is 29 coming off his best year and NFL Record setting 10 forced fumbles.. I wouldn’t pay him a dime extra though with JPP there.

All those health problems? 8 games missed in 7yrs, 3 of those games were in his rookie year and only 2006-07 did he miss any other games(5). Research then run that mouth. That being said win or lose I can’t wait til Sep 25th 1pm!!!

    Anyone care for real Football??

Very interesting article; however, it’s like a weatherman saying “partly sunny with a chance of rain.”

  30. thetechnocrat says: Aug 15, 2011 8:16 AM

Don’t give him jack! Give him a paycheck when he plays in a preseason game. Otherwise, tell him you’d like a refund for the 3 years out of the last 5 where he sucked or didn’t play a whole season. Let’s see how this overinflated goof handles that. By his reckoning, he’s the best DE in the league. Let Pierre-Paul play and let’s see what the young guy can dooooo.

Yes 0-7… Yet our trophy case has 3 in it, yours has a rusted POS trophy from over 50 years ago, without the word Superbowl on it. None of you on this thread were even BORN when this was won. Yet you keep bringing up regular season wins. Pure example of the standard set by your organization and fans.

The Giants are probably the one team you shouldn’t be so over-confident with, considering we posess the D-Line that could potentially END your “convict turned all star” QB’s career. Don’t tell me we can’t cut Vick in half – he is one GMeN hit away from being forced to hang it up.

If the prototype in the NFL was putting a speedy moron under center, every team would do it. You wonder why every January for the last 10 years, you hang your head in dissapointment.

Good call from the “non-delusional” Philly fan. You must be the President of The Empty Trophy Case Clan.

    CHOKE ARTISTS OF THE CENTURY!
