John Beck returns to starting group

John Beck AP

After missing the majority of work in team sessions last week, John Beck is fully back in the mix at Redskins practice.

Rex Grossman looked good as the team’s starter in the preseason opener, but he’s running with the backups. Beck is back with the starters, although he looked rusty following his groin injury.

“John Beck just missed a short sideline route by perhaps 10 yards. ‘What was that???’ one fan asked,” Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post wrote.

“This is not John Beck’s best practice,” Rick Maese wrote.

These notations were before Redskins.com’s Twitter feed gave us these three Beck plays in succession: throw away, off-target pass, and near-interception. Redskins.com also said Grossman has been the most consistent quarterback throughout camp.

This is a big week for Beck. If he’s going to be the starter, he needs to stay healthy, show progress in practice, and have a positive preseason outing.   The Redskins may not wind up declaring a starter until after the third preseason game.

Ah well.  At least the Redskins kicking competition seems decided, right?

“[Graham] Gano showing why the Redskins still aren’t settled at PK. Just missed 3 in a row,” John Keim of the Washington Examiner wrote.

Good to hear the Skins are having such success…haha. What a joke that franchise has become.

i dont understand. as much as they both suck, Grossman has at least got his team to a Super Bowl. he should be the starter.

John Beck’s original mentor, Cam Cameron, used to say “fail forward fast.”

  5. geniusesq says: Aug 15, 2011 11:16 AM

2 steps forward. 3 steps back. And, why Graham Gano is anywhere near an NFL roster is shocking.

@granthpaulsen, who is the beat reporter for 106.7 in DC, reported on Twitter: “John Beck is working with the Redskins second-team offense to start today’s 11 on 11s.”

On a different note, Paulsen said that LaRon Landry told him that Landry would be off the PUP list by Wednesday or Thursday.

well what did you expect, they used 2 coaches during one season, AT THE SAME TIME
2 qbs is Shanahans favorite game

  8. wryly1 says: Aug 15, 2011 11:35 AM

Hey Snyder & Shanny – Browns have a backup PK to Dawson who hit FG’s from 47 and 44 yards in their exhibition opener against defending champ Packers. What are you willing to give for him?

  9. parenthesis78 says: Aug 15, 2011 11:37 AM

yeah .. just make grossman the starter .. he looked good saturday .. we know that wont last .. but I’m not sold on beck .. how can 30+ other coaches be wrong about one guy .. he wasnt a starter b4 .. he shouldnt be a starter now ..
I’m more excited about hightower and our defense .. we need to grind it out .. run and defend ..

Shanahan is a has-been. He wasn’t even great with the Broncos. What did he do without Elway? Nothing. Overrated. The Redskins are doomed for failure year in and out. The players have come to expect it as much as the fans. What a sad environment.

  11. bolt4life says: Aug 15, 2011 11:48 AM

So Shanahan sees Rex had a good game, so he decides to put in Beck? Does Shanahan like QB drama? I feel for Redskins fans.

  12. picksix401 says: Aug 15, 2011 11:50 AM

why they released shane graham is beyond me… the guy kicked 12/12 field goals last season with the pats and shanahan’s gonna keep the lesser of the two grahams.. OF COURSE

  13. bturner032002 says: Aug 15, 2011 11:55 AM

grossman had 206yds in the first half.

start him please cause we we’re lucky to get 206yds passing in a whole game last year.

  14. ampats says: Aug 15, 2011 11:59 AM

Doesn’t really matter because the Skins fandom are creaming their pants about the 5th round draft pick in 2013 they got from the Haynesworth trade.

    6stairwayto7,

I love to read your comments because it always reminds me how little competition my children will have as they compete throughout their careers. I don’t want to bash PA because my father in-law is born and raise in Philly and is very well educated… But people have to admit that most of comments by PA fans of both teams sound like they are coming from H.S. dropouts. There are a few that consistently write objective commentary but that is few and far between.

Pre-season, prior to the second game. Let’s have some perspective here. He’ll also not give Royster as many carries this week as he did last because be wants to give Helu and others a full shot. It’s how he operates.

What I don’t get about Beck is that he is assumed to suck just because he’s never played. Kolb, on the other hand, was worth a King’s ransom. Why not see what he’s got? The team is going nowhere this season.

  17. natswizskincap says: Aug 15, 2011 12:21 PM

Shanahan has the Skins headed in the right direction for the first time since Danny Boy became owner. 2 to 3 years from now this team will be a playoff contender!!! With that said there are some major players within the NFC East and the Eagles looked poised to shake off rust and finally put some hardware in their trophy case!!! There are some great story-lines to be played out this season and the Vick lead Dream Team might be the most interesting. I do think something bad is bound to derail the Eagles because of Vick’s past due Karma payback. We’ll start to get answers in a few weeks!!!

  18. jdeezy19 says: Aug 15, 2011 12:22 PM

dan snyder is such a terrible owner.

  19. shoekid1113 says: Aug 15, 2011 12:22 PM

And everything is just perfect in ‘Skins camp right? Super Bowl champs …….. Hell No!!! Who cares about their quarterback issues, there both at best second stringers and they suck and Shanahan is a dumba**…. Nuff said.

  20. theduuuuuuuuuude says: Aug 15, 2011 12:22 PM

Looks like Grossman is the lesser of two evils. America will be shocked if Beck mysteriously turns into a productive starting QB. I think this guy’s career is destined for obscurity.

  21. karlpilkington says: Aug 15, 2011 12:25 PM

Keyboard courage… Why didnt you write who root for?

  22. theduuuuuuuuuude says: Aug 15, 2011 12:28 PM

    @Docredskin

The difference between Kolb and Beck is huge. Kold was trying to beat out McNabb and Vick in Philly for the starting spot. Beck couldn’t even beat out Cleo Lemon until halfway through 10 games into the season, when Dolphins were already irrelevant, and only after their 2nd string Qb (Trent Green I think was lost to injury for the season. Go back to 2008 and look at his numbers when he got a chance to start 5 games for Miami…. not very good.

  23. RussianBreadMaker says: Aug 15, 2011 12:32 PM

Gano is the worst kicker in the league. Pointing to the sky after you make a field goal is comical. Point to yourself.

Hopefully your father-in-law who was “born and raise” in Philly is more educated than you. Are you sure someone else in the family isn’t a high school dropout?

Being a Philly fan in the Washington D.C. area is awesome. All you ever hear is the argument that the Skins have won the Super Bowl in the past. While this may be true, I look at it this way:

Skins fans are like the dude who is married to a fat ugly chick, yet all he talks about is the hot chick he used to date in college.

why the eff u guys care about who our QB is? its not even ur team anyway, saying nobody care but kept posting in redskins articles. you guys having no life beside trolling us or wat? Its Preseason, the coaches have the right to do watever they want

“i dont understand. as much as they both suck, Grossman has at least got his team to a Super Bowl. he should be the starter.”

Not sure if this is sarcasm, wishful thinking my an Iggles fan, or in seriousness.

Yeah, “WRex” Grossman took the Bears to the superbowl. He was avg that year overall. The bears went to the SB bc they had the best defense in the league, one of the best defenses ever, to be exact. Grossman was basically a bus driver, making sure the wheels didnt come off. When the bus started to drift out of control, the D was there to bail him out.

He is on a completely different team (players, mentality, scheme, etc), with a different head coach and offensive cord. The D is vastly different as well.

Past performance on past teams has no bearing on 1) how well you will fit in/play in a new system
    2) whether or not you should start over someone else who has never started within the same system.

What part of Quarterback Competition didn’t sink in with you dullards?

Alternating reps… pretty basic. Move along. Nothing to see here.

THEY BOTH ARE PERFECT QB’S FOR THE SKINS. HORRIBLE!

  33. dirtydrynn27 says: Aug 15, 2011 3:34 PM

Let me tell you haters something! Grossman has been in this system longer than you you think! Kyle Shannahan had him in Denver 3 years ago!.Now I`m not saying that he will win a SB but Iam saying he will be a lot better than he was last year……Go Skinz!!!!!

  34. zeussuperman says: Aug 15, 2011 3:57 PM
