It rained in Chicago Saturday night and the Bears played a preseason game at Soldier Field. No one complained about the field afterwards, which is a step in the right direction.

It’s a little sad that the playing surface not falling apart is a big story, but that’s the kind of preseason it’s been for Chicago. The field was passable, which is progress.

“Field wasn’t bad. It wasn’t bad at all,” Bears wide receiver Roy Williams said.

Kahlil Bell and Johnny Knox echoed that sentiment. David Haugh of the Chicago Tribune called the field “serviceable” for a night. We’d think the Bears would want to aim higher than serviceable.

“I don’t know. It is what it is,” Jay Cutler said. “I don’t think it is going to change, so we just have to play on it.”

Of course, this was only one preseason game. The real test will come later.

“I’m looking forward to November, December to see how it really is,” Williams said.
