Matt Moore won’t get any snaps with Dolphins starters

Matt Moore, Chad Henne AP

The Dolphins talked all offseason about wanting to bring in true competition at quarterback for Chad Henne.

They brought in Matt Moore instead. Despite what Dolphins fans may want after a rough preseason start by Henne, Moore isn’t going to be competition for Henne anytime soon.

Tony Sparano made that clear with his words on Friday night, and re-emphasized his point on Monday.  Moore is not taking any snaps with the starting unit. He won’t in the second preseason game either.

I can’t worry about it,” Moore said via the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. “The competition is always going to be there. . . . So hopefully I’ll be ready if and when my number is called.”

At this point, the Dolphins will ride or die with Henne. They may as well give him as much rope as possible because turning to Moore will be a sign their season is already getting desperate.

tony and his qb will be out of work next year, that’s the silver lining for all phins fans

Is ESPN going to lose its mind over this one?

I mean, they did with Tim Tebow.

How the Dolphins didn’t address their QB situation in the offseason is a mystery to me…

This franchise is spinning wheels at this point, and unfortunately there may be just enough talent elsewhere on the roster to keep them out of the Andrew Luck sweepstakes….

  4. drgfri says: Aug 16, 2011 10:38 AM

Up for grabs would only be true if they had a viable NFL quarterback. Without one on the roster, it really can’t be “up for grabs.” This will be a rough season in South Beach…

  5. readysethike says: Aug 16, 2011 10:38 AM

i can’t say Chad Henne is a bad QB, i just think there offensive system, is not a right fit for him.

  6. beckzhere says: Aug 16, 2011 10:39 AM

How could it not ba a competition, Henne is horrible. Not that Moore is an upgrade but at least let them battle it out and the best QB wins.

Didn’t take much time for Fins owner Steve Ross much time to challenge Dan Snyder for the title of ‘worst owner in the league’. Why d’ya spose Parcells beat feet out of there?

  8. peester15 says: Aug 16, 2011 10:40 AM

Won’t be bad enough to get Andrew Luck next year either. Bengals are sure to get him.

  9. bird2jasun says: Aug 16, 2011 10:41 AM

Matty Nice is way better then chad…. He would still be in carolina if the O line would have protected him, made him look bad!

  10. bigbeefyd says: Aug 16, 2011 10:42 AM

LOL bet the Fins fans wish that Kyle Orton hadn’t just been elected team captain here in Denver. On the bright side, if B-Marsh can put aside one or more of his personalities for a while and keep clear of his wife’s knives, he might catch another 3 TDs this year.

  11. weightshakes says: Aug 16, 2011 10:43 AM

Tony Sparano set to take first team reps.

  12. thereisalwaysnextyear says: Aug 16, 2011 10:45 AM

I wish the Skins traded for Orton. The Phins will really regret not going that. Over the past 3 years in 44 games he’s thrown for an average of 236 yards per game (10,427 yards) with 59 TD’s and 33 picks. Almost a 2-1 TD/INT ratio. Why do people not give Orton the credit he deserves? He’s 6-4 225 lbs and he gets it done. I just don’t get it.

  13. 7to10for6allday says: Aug 16, 2011 10:48 AM

Idiots had a chance to get kolb, VY or any other halfway descent starter. Not only they didn’t do that but they picked Reggie bush lol. It’s actually comical…..almost like anyone of us can be the GM for that team.

  14. tombradyswig says: Aug 16, 2011 10:50 AM

    Moore>Henne!

A blind man could see that!

  15. Single Filament says: Aug 16, 2011 10:52 AM

I guess that’s one way to stifle QB controversy: don’t give the other guys on the roster a fighting chance.

Wasn’t the point of acquiring a QB on the offseason to *compete* with Henne?

I’m convinced Sparano is blind behind those sunglasses. No way he could watch these guys play and think Moore is so far behind Henne its not worth letting them compete.

When does the next draft start?

  16. cobibones13 says: Aug 16, 2011 11:03 AM

This is pretty funny. I guess Sporano is trying to pretend he has leverage in potentially trading for a QB by acting like Henne is the unquestioned starter. It’s almost like they think the Broncos will be desperate to trade Orton before the season begins.

Why didn’t they trade for Orton already? Were they so cheap they didn’t want to part with a 2nd round pick for a starting QB? This is a franchise that gave up a 2nd rounder for AJ Feeley. It would be a small price to pay for Sporano to keep his job.

  17. DonRSD says: Aug 16, 2011 11:05 AM

people come to the Dolphins to waste their career.
in 12 seasons since Marino left, they havent had an even average qb.
they keep trying to go the ;cheap route’ and find a qb who will just get the job done.

besides Trent Dilfer, name one SB team the last 12 or so years who hasnt been a top 12 or so qb?
and Dilfer only won because he had the top 1-2 defense ever to back him up.

sulk away you pathetic doll-fin fans.
you may have the worst fan base in the entire NFL

  18. cubano76 says: Aug 16, 2011 11:08 AM

Kills me to say this, but I never thought the Redskins would have a better QB situation than the Dolphins. I’m sick to my stomach.

  19. AlanSaysYo says: Aug 16, 2011 11:08 AM

What I learned about Miami’s QBs in the first preseason game:

    1. Henne still locks on to his receiver and stares him down. Plain as day watching him throw that second pick. If he looked off to the left he would have completed that pass to Bess. All this tells me is that he’s not listening to coaching or he’s not capable of improving.

    2. Matt Moore appears to be Tyler Thigpen with an arm. Or maybe the offensive line is just that bad that Moore had to run around like a possessed chicken.

Maybe Daniel Thomas can play QB. It’s not like he found any holes to run through.

  20. mburger13 says: Aug 16, 2011 11:08 AM

Kyle Orton was being over-priced by the Broncos for what the PHINS appeared to view as a stopgap…better than Henne but a stopgap still

Bigger problem for Dolphins is that there weren’t adequate upgrades around Henne. .

Evaluating after just one game there were no indicates that the changes to the O-line or runningbacks will improve the run game. The failure to upgrade the TE position was spotlighted by the ball that hit Fasano in the hands and he let bounce off to a defender for an INT.

So now reactionary fans and media see 2 int for Henne and go off the deep end calling for Moore.

  21. expatpatfan says: Aug 16, 2011 11:11 AM

The team is coached by someone ownership clearly doesn’t want and is led by a QB the fanbase clearly doesn’t support. They overpaid for a 3rd-down back (a talented 3rd-down back, but still…) in a transparent ploy to sell tickets. Vegas has Miami’s over/under win total at 7.5–bet the under.

  22. deadeye says: Aug 16, 2011 11:16 AM

Trading up into round two for a RB is very questionable given that QB is still a their #1 need and Mallett was on the board. What were they thinking

I like Sparano, but this is his last season in Miami. Not sure about Ireland.

  23. djp40 says: Aug 16, 2011 11:22 AM

Makes sense to give Henne as many reps as possible, he clearly needs it. My take is that Moore will the QB by mid-season, if not sooner. What exactly is the plan in Miami now that Sparano has no Tuna to back him? He’ll be gone next year, so it really doesn’t matter who pilots this mess of a team.

  24. tommynatorii says: Aug 16, 2011 11:24 AM

Tony, you benched Henne last year. If you want to ride him down, so be it. As a Fins fan, I’ll be happy when you and your boy are kicked out of Miami next year.
Your specialty is OL coach, and you can’t even fix that! Now you decide who a QB is?

  25. terrellochouno says: Aug 16, 2011 11:25 AM

This guy is Brad Childress all over again.

  26. pacificnw7722 says: Aug 16, 2011 11:29 AM

It’s obvious Sparano won’t be back next year. They need to bring in a REAL coach like Bill Cowher or Jeff Fisher.

  27. dolfan34 says: Aug 16, 2011 11:42 AM

How did Chad Henne have a ‘rough start in the opener’? Because he was 4-8 for 77 yards with 1TD and 2INTS, in just over a quarter of work? Did you guys even watch the game? The first INT was on Fasano. Any TE worth his salt in the league catches that ball. It’s not a surprise Fasano did it last year too. This was early in the game and killed anything the ‘Phins had going. So let’s say he’s 5-8 1TD and 1 INT. Is that a bad quarter and a bit? How come nobody says ‘Aaron Rodgers struggled in his start on the weekend’?

It’s over analysis by the fans and the media. Having a QB play a third of a game isn’t a big enough sample to have a proper opinion on anything.

  28. geauxjay says: Aug 16, 2011 11:48 AM

If Bill Parcells was still running the team, he’d solve the problem by signing Vinny Testaverde.

  29. mrcogburn says: Aug 16, 2011 11:53 AM

Warming up the tar and feathers for Sparano and his idiot child QB. They have disgraced this once proud franchise. My only hope is that the owner fires him mid-season for his pig- headed insistence that Henne is a starting QB in this league.

  30. spfripp says: Aug 16, 2011 12:02 PM

I like it! We are going with the suck for Luck plan.

Kidding aside, I would give Henne a few more preseason games to show what he has but at the same time it should be open competition.

  31. FinFan68 says: Aug 16, 2011 12:02 PM

Lots of hate for Henne. He had issues last year and he still stares down his receiver. That means he either does not completely know the offense or he is just not aware while the play is evolving. Henne has skills and a couple of drives in the first pre-season game without 2 major weapons and a vanilla (moreso than usual) gameplan is not enough to make an intelligent evaluation of him so far this year.

  32. shaunymac424 says: Aug 16, 2011 12:21 PM

I find it weird that nobody is complaining about how Sparano said he wouldn’t gameplan for the first preseason game. I mean, I understand it’s the preseason, but you’re trying to get your team into regular season familiarity.

Maybe that had a little to do with the first couple of drives in the game?

You have two quarterbacks who want to start and you don’t help them out, then you say that there is no competition. I don’t get it.

  33. deepseabreeze says: Aug 16, 2011 12:28 PM

  35. tyelee says: Aug 16, 2011 12:37 PM

It is becoming more clear as to why the Dolphins at one time were going after another HC and later after another QB……. Now it is like the old HC and QB are out to get released from their contracts rather than earn them…..Just saying!

  36. givensr2 says: Aug 16, 2011 12:39 PM

The Dolphins are committed …. committed to finishing dead last and positioning themselves to draft Andrew Luck.

How else do you explain their offseason? They don’t pursue a quarterback, let their top 2 rbs leave, have a mediocre (at best) OL. Their defense isn’t exactly striking fear either.

And who expects Reggie Bush will be a feature back??? If offensive mastermind Sean Payton can’t make the guy produce, no offensive system will allow him to do so.

They will be dead last, take advantage of getting the top pick at a reasonable salary, as opposed to the old payment structure, and start adding talent next offseason.

  37. givensr2 says: Aug 16, 2011 12:40 PM

“They have disgraced this once proud franchise”

You people make me sick. You talk all this doom and gloom.

    Im sorry, 1-15 is disgraceful

11-5, 7-9 , 7-9 is not disgraceful. Our only playoff appearance in a decade.

This started from a team that had nothing and was completely rebuilt in 3 years. Missing one piece. If you don’t have the patience or brains to support your team and notice where we are then good riddens, see ya.

Ask yourself this, would sparano be a “bad coach” if he had gotten Vick or had another qb in there? He was a genius when we went 11-5 with Pennington, now hes disgraceful? You are disgraceful

  39. trbowman says: Aug 16, 2011 12:50 PM

Henne deserves a little more time, he has had less than two seasons in which he did not play great but played ok for a young QB. If he does not step up this year then yes, maybe it is time to move on.

  44. peanutbutter&jelly says: Aug 16, 2011 2:13 PM

i’m starting to believe that all this talk about andrew luck is going to jinx him.this guy hasn’t even finnished college and everyone has him down as being the second coming of the greatest qb ever. with all this hype if he comes into the league and only ends up as say a top 15 qb he’ll be called a bust.as far as miami goes henne was playing without many starters-bmarsh,reggie bush, jake long, and they have a couple of guys on the right side of the o-line that may need to be changed around and a new rb that still needs to grasp the system. now i do believe the management messed up by not going after a qb when they traded up to the second rd.(mallett) but none the less thats what they are dealing with and henne turned in a good preformance for his time on the field and they won and atlanta is a good team whose starters were pretty much shut out aginst the dolphin-d on the first 2 series until players started getting changed out so in closing i would not say the fins looked that bad and although thay may not make the superbowl i would not be suprised if they are in the playoffs.to me the real problem with this team is depth they need some quality play from the second & third string although i do give them credit for heart they were down 17-0 at one point and won the game 28-23 thats called not quitting and thats a great quality with any team

  45. realdraftgm says: Aug 16, 2011 2:14 PM

Sparano and Ireland have done everything in their power to act like they are bringing in a quarterback to compete and then not do it. Do not blame then with Kyle Orton he sucks anyhow. Matt Moore I like o.k. but now he will not get first team reps that is ridiculous. Henne is the worst starter in this league in alot of years. That is a point that will not change. He sucked at Michigan and he sucks worse on this level. The problem is Sparano and Ireland have such big inflated egos and pride that they will ride Henne’s ship until the team sinks because they have so much pride and do not want to admit they made a mistake drafting the guy. Plenty of teams miss on second round quarterbacks but instead of admit it and move on they are sacrificing there season and in the end their jobs. They could of gone after Vince Young but said there was no interest. The funnisest thing was when they said after the draft they thought of trading up in the third round for Mallett. That is obviously a lie because they did trade up in the third except it was for Daniel Thomas; Mallett even pointed it that obvious point out. What they do is do nothing because they have too much pride. Tibetan Buddism says pride is the cause of suffering; guess Sparano and Ireland like to suffer. Mallett was better than Henne at Michigan when he was a freshman and Henne a senior. Of course he is a 100 times better now. That is the reason they made the third round comment about Mallett because they knew they were passing on someone better. The mistake the owner made was signing them to two year extensions after he could not get Haurbaugh. If you do not believe in someone then not getting someone else is not a reason to sign an extension for them. U.S. soccer made the same mistake hiring Bob Bradley again just because they could not get Klinsman the first time. What you do is fire someone first then go after the coach alot of people will not consider a job with someone else not fired first based on principle. Believe me just because they did not get Haurbaugh did not mean the grass was not still greener on the other side. What you do Mr. Ross for future reference is if you know your gm and coach are messing up then step in and you make the draft pick or force them too. With all respect Mr. Ross you said you wanted a down the field Marinoesque attack. Quaterbacks like that do not come around often with the arm stregnth and skill. Mallett is that kind of player sure he needs to work on a quicker release and less windup but the Patriots have already partially correct that. Your next best hope is to draft Dayne Christ from Notre Dame or get Vince Young. You could of had either one of those guys this year probably depending on if Young would of come but Mallett you should of stepped in and taken in the first round love Poincy but you had no guarantee another team would not take him. In round three when they were gonna take Thomas you should of told them you take Mallett or you are being fired before you get that card in with someone else’s name. I do love Thomas out of K State but Mallett was the perfect quarterback for the offense the owner wanted. Henne is not even an average backup he is a lower tier backup Orton is an average backup. But it does not surprise me you are not giving Matt Moore a chacne considering everything else you have done. My question to Ross is are you gonna fire Ireland because you should and start with a new gm. Sparano can stay until next year so the gm can have more choices for coach unless you do the interim thing if someone on the staff is qualified. I mean come on U.S. soccer finally had the guts and hopefully we will not have to see Dough boy Bradley starting or even on the team anymore because he may actually be worse for U.S. soccer than Henne is for Dolphin quarterback.

  46. promickey says: Aug 16, 2011 2:35 PM

This is what “the annointed one” (Chad Henne)
means; No matter how bad Chad plays he is given a greater opportunity to start over Matt Moore. It is done because Sparano, Ireland and Parcells all chose Henne in the second round. Henne is just not a number one quarterback. Management just has to accept that they made a mistake in drafting him and move on. Sparano will not accept it and will be out of work along with Henne next season.

  47. shadowdolphin says: Aug 16, 2011 2:42 PM

Sad but true. Ross is competing for the worst owner in the league honors as evidenced by his ridiculous pursuit of a coach in the media followed by his desire to build bars in the stadium rather than a team on the field (maybe that’s his plan … terrible team so everyone just leaves their seats and goes to the clubs he’s building all over the stadium).

Ireland isn’t competing, he is the worst GM in the league. Totally over his head and unable to pull the trigger on anything the team needs. Also, he’s not much of a man for not stepping up and just letting all of you trash the coach for lack of signings, trades etc. that have nothing to do with Sparano.

Sparano is a nice guy but clearly in over his head. He also should stop rambling to the media. How many times can you put your foot in your mouth without realizing it?

It’s going to be at best a mediocre season. First team against first team Atlanta would have beat them by 4 or 5 touchdowns (first pre-season game or 10 weeks from now).

  48. nflfan101 says: Aug 16, 2011 2:53 PM

Matt Moore is a good QB. Most people who don’t like him have never seen him play.

He has won more games that most backups. The biggest problem he had in Carolina the last two years was terrible coaches. Also, last year was simply a bad year (it is what it is). He got hurt and the whole team was demoralized.

The Dolphins need to give Moore a chance. They may be surprised.

The last 4 years in Miami have been nuts:

    Culpepper or Brees? Culpepper (!!!)
    Henne or Orton? Henne (!!)

The Bush vs. Ricky and Ronnie thing was the telltale….. coming off poor O line performance with two backs that still have gas and are getting over 4 yards a carry with no help…. you spend 7 figures on one RB that’s been injured for nearly 50% of the games in the last 3 years and basically ignore a FIVE ALARM FIRE at QB….

that right there is completely totally poor judgement. crazy.

With all the available abs out there this season, free agents and draftees the best competition is Matt Moore? No offense to Moore, but why not an established vet. Management if you can call it that doesn’t get it, first they low blow the coach last season now they don’t bringing anyone to challenge. Do theyreally think they’ll get a shot at Andrew Luck in the next draft, surely they are noypt trying to win this year

  54. mumfio says: Aug 16, 2011 3:54 PM

How can the head coach & GM go into the season with Henne as the starter knowing that their jobs are on the line? It’s almost like they want to be fired.

Henne makes the same “rookie” mistakes & seems to actually be regressing. Henne’s best game last year came against a depleted Raider defense. Henne wouldn’t start on any other team except maybe the Redskins.

Wannstedt picked a corner over Drew Brees. Saban choose Ronnie Brown over Aaron Rogers. The current guys chose Jake Long over Matt Ryan. The Dolphins keep passing on franchise QB’s in a quaterback driven league.
