Former Eagles receiver Pete Pihos, whose nine-year career earned his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, has died at the age of 87.
The Eagles have announced that Pihos passed earlier today, after an extended fight with Alzheimer’s disease.
A fifth-round draft choice from Indiana University in 1945, Pihos qualified for six Pro Bowls. He was a five-time All-Pro.
Pihos caught the game-winning touchdown against the Rams in the 1949 NFL title game, and he led the league in receptions from 1953 through 1955. In ’53, he won the receiving triple crown with 63 catches for 1049 yards and 10 touchdowns, leading the NFL in all three categories.
He compiled those numbers in a 12-game season.
His 63 career touchdowns put Pihos at No. 120 on the all-time list, tied with Curt Warner and Maurice Jones-Drew.
